Infant feeding

The LEAST discreet place you've breastfed!

Following on from the Lorraine Kelly thread and her GMTV discussion (where she seems to think breastfeeding is only ok if it is 'discreet'), I wondered if people might be up for a discussion of the least discreet place they've fed their children.

I'll kick off: In an O2 store whilst DH signed up for an i-phone.

In fairness to the sales assistant, he did not bat an eyelid.

On a rush-hour commuter train. It was the choice between screaming baby or breast-feed, so opted for the latter, obviously. I wasn't thrilled at having to do it, and was discreet as possible - I was hardly sitting there with my breasts bared to all - but those surrounding me clearly were very uncomfortable, there was tutting and head shaking from men and women alike. I just smiled....

By the checkouts in Tesco almost every week when mine were little.
The "breastfeeding/baby changing room" had a timed air freshener that went off about 3 minutes after the door opened, good for a nappy changed, not so good when you realised you've still got another 15 minutes in a room with no breathable air!

At my own wedding and reception, with assistance getting back in the dress(ds had a chest infection too, so threw up all over the middle of the wedding bed - aren't they just precious!)

In the cinema whilst watching Harry Potter

In the rear facing "showcase" seat on the bus, with the entire lower deck facing me and ds.

Front of House at a student theatre production - I kept selling ice creams/programmes etc throughout, not even a funny look though.

At a wine evening two hours after getting ds home from hospital - well, I wasn't going to miss a wine evening!

In lectures (the course was "inclusive education" so they couldn't really complain)

Hmmmmmm...well, in Debenhams whist exp queued to pay. Dd was a few days old and I stood there feeding and no one even realised.
Have done it in church. In assembly, in the corridor of Ds's assembly after being asked to leave with crying 2 week old by bitch teacher , in the middle of shopping centre on bench...loads of places!

Oh yes! at a HUGE family reunion when Ds was 6 weeks old and the centre of attention being the youngest family member ~ at the breast and otherwise! I was a first time mum and not exactly flustered by it, just aware of lots of eyes on me!

Changing trains at Earl's Court. Had to run, with DD attached to my boob. And would you believe it I wasn't offered a seat until I asked!

I must say I have huge respect for mums who can bf standing up or walking around - that sprint in Earl's Court was the only time I've done it really. I saw a lady walking around the PYO strawberry field with baby attached, was pretty impressed! She wasn't picking the berries though.

On the grass outside at a wedding, whilst doing the paperwork to buy a car, on the beach, standing up at parties, in Church, loads of restaurants/pubs/shops etc.
Was expressing on a plane this morning - that was fun....?!

At the park, under a tree while people passing all stared as if they never saw a boob and a baby before.

The least public place I've fed in has been a swimming pool. It's one which has a beach area - nobody noticed even though my boob was out because I didn't draw attention to myself - we were sitting in the water at the time.I was with my mates who were all sat around me - don't think I would have done it if I'd been alone, would have slunk off to the changing rooms.

On the MTR (underground trains) during rush hour in Hong Kong!
In fact, I breast-fed all over Hong Kong.
Why not!

I never did discreet.

In a conservatory in a conservatory showroom on a busy Saturday morning.

At the registrar's office when registering DD.

In John Lewis's shoe department.

Middle of the village park.

Whilst signing for a parcel in front of the postman.

Too many cafes to remember.

In a church at BIL's wedding, the oldest Catholic church in the country and very formal!

On grass in middle of village festival.

At the 'Mairie' (French town hall) whilst waiting for our wedding ceremony to begin, on the Métro, at the hospital whilst my child's arm was being plastered (only way he would sit still)...the list is endless!

Sat right opposite an old couple on the bench seats in Rick Steins Fish and Chip shop Padstow.

Also in Gatwick airport, sitting on the floor by a check-in queue (I was supposed to be in but DH and DS was in) - lovely comment from uppity old bloke saying "it's like a refugee camp in here"! Nice!

I never faced any problems or adverse comments when feeding in public. Have fed DDs on a train opposite strangers, on planes, at my grandad's funeral, in restaurants and cafes, parked by the side of a busy road in the dark (most scary), in work's canteen, pretty much anywhere really. Found it suprisingly easy, after initial worries, and very discreet with judicious placing of muslin/child. More posiitive stories from media, less of the negative to encourage more uptake. I have friends scared of feeding in public because of all the stories.

Whilst having legs waxed. Beautician said 'oh, he's settled down then' as ds had been screamy. I said he always was quiet when feeding and she went bright red as didn't even realise. Surely seeing undercarriages all day is worse.

Never did discreet either.

Many cafes, restaurants at home, Lake District, Brittany etc.

Most picturesque was on a wooden bench on the side of Grasmere Water - beautiful if slightly awkward as was on a slope so couldn't put my feet to the ground!

Definitely so standing / walking around stories. DS1 was born in April last year so outdoors at swimming pool, parks, pub gardens, town centre, etc.

I always started feeding in front of in-laws and they would both disappear!

Some great stories.

I think the least discreet was on a train when ds was about 18 months old. He was tired and grumpy and kept popping on and off, so I hadn't bothered to do my bra up after the last feed. It was only when I noticed a very glam young woman staring at me with a horrified look that I realised my top was still pulled up too - ie nipple hanging out for the whole carriage to see
