Infant feeding

The LEAST discreet place you've breastfed!

Following on from the Lorraine Kelly thread and her GMTV discussion (where she seems to think breastfeeding is only ok if it is 'discreet'), I wondered if people might be up for a discussion of the least discreet place they've fed their children.

I'll kick off: In an O2 store whilst DH signed up for an i-phone.

In fairness to the sales assistant, he did not bat an eyelid.

I feed everywhere - for some reason I felt very exposed feeding sitting on the grass next to the car while DH was setting up our tent. Lots of pub feeding, fed during DSs Baptism (not the water bit though!), whilst helping out at DSs pre-school (lots of curious kids!)

whilst having my hair cut also whilst writing our wills at the solicitors, interestingly he stopped asking me any questions once I was feeding ds and would only address Dh!

I've done lots of feeding on benches in town and stuff like that, but least discreet was probably at a funeral. Not the service, the bit with the food - I sat down by the buffet without thinking, next thing I knew there was a queue of old people right in front of me! They were all really lovely though, got a couple of nice comments about it

In court, I was ordered out!

I couldn't believe it either

Church, loads of times, in a taxi in Alexandria, on a open top tour bus in Naples, on the TV (BF awareness week launch), airport check in queue, pushing the trolley round Tesco, leaning over into carseat in traffic jam, my nanas funeral plus many, many more (been bf for 3 years).

I've just (this week!) weaned my toddler - and have thankfully never had to tandem feed often in public - which I could never be discreet about

I've never had a single negative comment, and had a fair few positive ones.

Maybeeee Policywonk. Artichoke would have to tell me how old her DC was at the time...

Were you wearing a ridiculously unsuitable outfit (e.g. dress that has to be hitched up from the waist, which a friend of mine cleverly wore to a wedding recently!). I'd give points for that, definitely!

In middle of large city centre on wall that was really high. Was only place to sit with daughter 2 weeks old. Was fine but scared of heights so clinging on for dear life.

In tent in camping shop.
Numerous times in doctors surgery, once managed to clear the waiting room.

Lots of other places, thankfully all quite recepitve to feeding, especially when 3year old says whats happening to every passer by.

Rhubarb - depends. Was it a feature on breastfeeding. Would def consider you as a potential winner if you just started feeding in the middle of an interview about fiscal policy or something.

Am loving that I seem to be treated as having some sort of status to judge here. Makes me feel v. important

Gertie - I fed DD in court and the judge thanked me for managing to keep the kids quiet! She was a woman I hasten to add.

Oh yes, leaning over the carseat going around the M25 was definatly not very discreet! (not driving)

Last week at DD's 8th b'day party in the school hall. I had to feed DS in the art room as I realised I had put on this high necked dress and had to pull it all the way up exposing jelly belly et all. luckily no one walked in! I am useless at remembering to wear bf appropriate clothes.

I don't think I am particularly discreet but I don't care, I am just so happy I am managing to bf DS still at 3 months, it all went tits up with DD

on a glacier

in a cicus top, just got myself settled when they made me stand up whilst they put more seating in, I just carried on

Don't I get a teeny prize for the racecourse? All the punters, jockeys, owners, trainers and the horses?

A small rosette even?

Report
Rhubarb · 08/07/2009 14:43

Deb, were you bf your ds as he was being cut out of the trolley? Because if you were, then you deserve the prize!

I bfd ds2 in a nursing chair on display at John Lewis - several shoppers came over to have a look, I felt maybe I should charge JLP demonstrator rates!

In the pub garden - loads of kids asking me what I was doing..

By the pool in Centre Parks - we had a whole section to ourselves as no-one would come any where near us!

I'm planning on BFing tonight in a governors meeting.

Last year - actually ON GMTV. Nowhere near Lorraine though. News item on reduced risk of cot death. They filmed me feeding at home. I was a longer report at 7.45am and on the hour and half hour for a shorter bit in the news. With a lovely blob of baby sick on my shoulder.

Other than that - on the bullet train between Kyoto and Tokyo, airports, benches, museums, cafes. I have never had a negative comment or even a rude stare in 5 years.

yep Rhubarb - ds1 and ds2 were in the trolley, ds2 was crying so took him out of the plastic bucket type baby seat, ds1 still in toddler seat. After ds1 repeatedly whining Mummy, Mummy, Mummy I realised he had put his finger through the drainage holes in the baby seat, and was stuck - very stuck, so fire engine and ambulance came (must have been a quiet day)and ds2 decided that he needed his feed there and then!

At the airport departure gate, in front of the entire planeload of passengers -- plane was late (of course), boarding about to start, I was sitting at the front waiting for seating to be called. Baby started screaming, no choice but to feed him, by then I was the centre of attention.

In the lounge of Heathrow airport. Though out of consideration for more modest people from other countries, I covered up with a muslin.

sitting on the boundary at the Oval as England were playing South Africa.
The nice steward man moved us from our OK seats on to the pitchitself because DS1 was overgeating. The stands were packed, play was on-going -no one minded or said anything at all
and
It was the best day..
Very nearly wanted to call DS1 Jonty or Devon after that. He gets really tired of me tellingthat story - especially to his friends in the cricket team

oooh fantastic thread, has made me chuckle all the way through!

I used to bf in a vest that flopped down, therefore basically just sitting there with one breast hanging out for the world to see. LK would be more than disappointed, she'd be horrified...

Also managed to accidentally spray milk all over a couple of other tables in a cafe once (early days, very full breasts) but I don't think anyone noticed.

hmmm, what else can I think of...
