i can see why you are all outraged, but i do think that he's words have been taken out of context, as they are just quotes and not an article that he has written himself.
i must add that i am pro bf and still bf 13month old dd. there is a real lack of suport for us that do carry on after 1yr don't know why!

georgimama · 18/02/2009 10:56

Hoe can you take "bizarre, unusual and not necessary" out of context? Unless he was actually not talking about breastfeeding, but talking about dogging or something.

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 18/02/2009 16:24

You are right it is a quote, of what he said live on GMTV to Greenmonkies! He also said live on air that it's to avoid sex. Would you like to say how it can be taken out of context?

chipmonkey · 18/02/2009 16:37

Mrs GokWan, very impressed with your dh's letter ( and surprised Gok Wan knows so much about bf, whoever would have guessed?)

jemart · 21/02/2009 22:42

At the risk of being flamed, I actually agree that "After the age of one breast feeding is bizarre, unusual and not necessary."

WHO may recommend breast feeding until age of two but this is probably more relevant in thirdworld nations with less than ideal sanitation, lack of clean water supply etc.

paolosgirl · 21/02/2009 22:57

I always thought that GMTV was the television equivalent of the Daily Mail?

hunkermunker · 21/02/2009 23:01

Jemart, if you post things that are inflammatory, you DO risk being flamed.

I'm interested to know why you think the way you do though - and why the WORLD Health Organisation would give out messages that were only for the developing world? You're wrong, you know

jemart · 21/02/2009 23:08

I'm entitled to my opinion hunkermunker, can I help it if it happens to conflict with yours?

hunkermunker · 21/02/2009 23:10

Probably not, Jemart - unless you change your mind?

hercules1 · 21/02/2009 23:10

jemart - it's not a question of opinion that the WHO recommend to 2 and beyond for everyone, it's a fact.

hunkermunker · 21/02/2009 23:12

And yes, I think you're confusing the two things - firstly the "opinion" on the WHO advice - there's no opinion to have there, since it's just the advice that's given to the world. Secondly finding feeding an older baby bizarre and whatever else it was - that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. You realised it would be inflammatory, especially on this thread, but you posted it anyway - either you'd like to talk about it or you'd like to get shirty when questioned. I'd hope for the former there!

jemart · 21/02/2009 23:13

I don't agree with the rest of the stuff this silly man said but do not see any need to continue breast feeding beyond 12 months old.

hercules1 · 21/02/2009 23:15

There are loads of reasons why to breastfeed past 12 months but you are entitled to your opinion on this. I wouldnt call it strange or icky someone practising curtailed breasfeeding.

moondog · 21/02/2009 23:15

Do you think it is ok to give a 12 month old cows' milk then Jemart?

hunkermunker · 21/02/2009 23:16

There's all sorts of reasons to keep going - health, comfort, convenience.

hercules1 · 21/02/2009 23:17

course it is moondog - that's more natural innit

vlc · 21/02/2009 23:18

Is that because you think bf is only for small babies, Jemart?

jemart · 21/02/2009 23:18

hercules1 - I never said it was a matter of opinion that the WHO recommend to 2 and beyond for everyone, am aware that this is the case.

moondog · 21/02/2009 23:20

Jemart, so please answer my question.

hercules1 · 21/02/2009 23:21

You said it was up to 2 and more relevant for the 3rd world. WHy so?

jemart · 21/02/2009 23:24

Moondog - I see no problem with giving cows milk to a 12 month old, or follow-on formula or fruit juice. Both my children had all of the above.

vlc - I think that bf is for babies who are not entirely weaned yet. I stopped bf for my second dd at 10 months because she was entirely eating proper food by this point.

hercules1 · 21/02/2009 23:25

You seem to have a weird hangup about breastfeeding. It is a proper food you know. WHy is it okay to give milk from another species but not our own?

vlc · 21/02/2009 23:25

I posted on the WHO advice to feed to 2 years and beyond last year jemart. They are actually very clear that their advice is for our country. It looks like they are aware of the misperception that it's only developing countries where this is sound advice

see here.

vlc · 21/02/2009 23:27

Jemart (I won't bold your name again - it looks really shouty, sorry)

Hypothetically, if you had a cup of coe's milk, and a cup of mother's milk side by side on your kitchen table, which one do you think would be most benefical to a small child?

moondog · 21/02/2009 23:28

So Jem, why is it ok to give a baby milk from a big slobbery farm animal that is designed to fit the needs of a calf, but not ok to give a human infant milk from its mother designed specifically to fit the nutritional needs of a small humaN?

I'm not picking a fight, I'm just really interested in how your logic works.
