"Woman's-name-having twat" is lovely

It just defies common sense that on this kind of programme they will invite random numpties to spout on endlessly, instead of, for example, inviting someone who's at the top of the tree in breastfeeding research.

Someone who could discuss actual facts instead of just airing their personal neuroses to the nation. [shudder]

BlueAeroplane · 13/02/2009 22:33

Oh, he really is very much of a cock in the not useful or pleasing sense of the word, isn't he?

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 13/02/2009 22:39

georgimama I take it Mrs Hilary Jones didn't breastfeed?

NormaJeanBaker I needed that laugh!

I told the lady (HV or MW, can't remember which is which) at the breastfeeding clinic today about GMTV and Dr Hilary Jones and she's going to have a look. She wasn't impressed she said "that's what we're working against!" she also said about some people finding it offensive and said about the Koran saying that women should breastfeed for 2 years so some Muslims find comments like that offensive.

GreenMonkies · 14/02/2009 08:02

beautifully put welliemum!

MrsGokWan · 14/02/2009 10:49

I sent DH the links to Dr Jone's advice and the first thing he did was email the GMC, OFCOM and GMTV.

This is the basic email he sent to them, with slight differences to each body.

Dr Hillary Jones appeared upon this program in his capacity as a MD. As such and introduced as "Doctor" Hillary Jones he cannot express a personal opinion on a TV show without it being interpreted as being the professional, educated opinion of a Health Care professional.

In the described programme Dr Jones said the following:

"After the age of one breast feeding is bizarre, unusual and not necessary. After a year the mother gets more out of breastfeeding than the child does. This act is more for the mother's comfort than the baby's. The bonding process is over and nutritionally the baby no longer needs the milk. Women breastfeed their children for longer for a variety of reasons. It can be to avoid renewing sexual relations with their partners, it's easier for some mothers to just give in to the child while other mothers prefer to pretend their grown up child is still a baby. If the child's friends find out they may get picked on and it can delay the youngster from developing his or her independence. And as children get a little older, they are forming sexual feelings so it's very bizarre to be then placing a child to the breast."

This advice is misleading, inaccurate, dangerous and contradicts several major healthcare guidances. Dr Hillary has taken it upon himself to not just ignore but to give the directly opposite advice to that of NICE and WHO.

Whilst Dr Jones may have been expressing a personal opinion he was on the show as an expert giving the healthcare professions advice. As such he has lied, been misleading and given dangerous advice. Further to this GMTV are guilty of the same crime and as such should be facing charges for giving misleading medical advice.

The World Health Organisation advises that women breast feed (along with solid food) up until the child is 2 years old and they would prefer if you continued to feed beyond this too.

Rather than being just for the mother's benefit the WHO state clearly that benefits for children continue beyond this point.

Dr Jones' assertions about mental problems for the baby and the sexual practices of mothers were both highly inappropriate and highly inaccurate. It is ludicrous to assert that breastfeeding prevents sexual contact with the mother's partner, for many it in fact enhances it. His comments about the child's development are highly inaccurate as studies have shown breast fed children are more confident than their bottle fed peers. And from a common sense point of view how many 2 year olds will have friends who are articulate enough to mock them for still being breast fed?

NICE guidance is clear "all health care professionals should support breastfeeding for as long as is desired."

The American Academy of Family Physicians state that: "breast feeding beyond the first year offers considerable benefits to both mother and child, and should continue as long as mutually desired. If the child is younger than 2 years of age, the child is at increased risk of illness if weaned." Dr Jones as a MD would be expected to be aware of this study if he was speaking on a TV show as a medical expert on the subject.

I expect a full reprimand of Dr Jones and GMTV to have to issue a full and frank apology at an absolute minimum.

InTheDollshouse · 14/02/2009 15:19

Ooh Welliemum, please would you share some of the refs you found about bfing and the maturation of the immune system? That stuff is fascinating...

welliemum · 15/02/2009 02:58

Happy to share - but am severely technologically challenged, so bear with me...

Now, IF this has worked, this link should take you to a list of recent papers on PubMed, all looking at different aspects of breastfeeding and immunity.

My impression (on a very superficial canter through the list) is that there's a lot of interest but not a lot of hard facts, so far. A lot of "this is terribly terribly important" but not much precise info that parents could use.

welliemum · 15/02/2009 03:00

That is a fab letter, by the way, Mrs GokWan!

InTheDollshouse · 15/02/2009 15:04

Thanks Welliemum
The stuff I was aware of is greater response to vaccines, and some stuff about the development of the thymus. Like you say though, hasn't really be extensively studied.

raindroprhyme · 15/02/2009 20:09

just going to throw a complete spanner in the works. i who breastfed DS1 for 7 months and DS2 for 14 months intend to try and mix feed any future child i hope to have.
it is an informed decision through research of the guidelines and my own personal experience.

Woman do need support to establish breastfeeding and often not enough support is available.

But becoming a mother is a huge thing and we should not make woman feel they are failing because of a choice or circumstance which means they parent differently from their nextdoor neighbour(us).

there should be no judgement and finding un biased info can be difficult.

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 15/02/2009 23:33

raindroprhyme who do you feel is judging? I'm a bit confused about your post.

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 16/02/2009 01:48

Just read on FaceBook that OFCOM have the tapes and are investigating.

Also, thought you might find it interesting, GMTV are deleting comments from their site that critise Dr Hilary Jones.

BlueAeroplane · 16/02/2009 11:28

I fully expect OFCOM not to do anything about it (not sure we're at the right place, culturally, for a regulatory body to support breastfeeding so thoroughly, more's the pity), but I do think MrsGW's DH's letter is superb.

tiktok · 16/02/2009 11:32

raindrop - I think the point is that Dr Hilary is the one doing the judging! I mean, you couldn't be more judgemental than he's been about bf past the (arbitrary) age he happens to think is appropriate.

If that's your point, sorry, I have misunderstood your post!

BouncingTurtle · 16/02/2009 13:54

TBMAF2 - where on Facebook? I can't find it on the breastfeeding isn't obscene one, or is there a specific fb group for this issue?

Jackstini · 16/02/2009 15:24

Fab letter by your DH MrsGW!
Yes Tink, let us know the facebook link please.

"bizarre, unusual and not necessary"

Stupid!

OrmIrian · 16/02/2009 15:32

"It can be to avoid renewing sexual relations with their partners"

That old chestnut

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 16/02/2009 16:55

Oh yes, Dr Hilary Jones has his own "fan club" on facebook. I'll look out the link if you can't find it.

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 16/02/2009 16:56

It's called Dr Hilary Jones...a woman scorned

From the OFCOM Broadcasting Code 2008:
"Section 2: Harm and Offence
2.2 Factual programmes or items or portrayals of factual matters must not materially mislead the audience."
Will be contacting ofcom.
Also I can't believe I had forgotten that Nestle sponsor GMTV...

Grendle · 16/02/2009 18:43

Oh that's brilliant .

BouncingTurtle · 16/02/2009 19:41

I've complained to GMTV and the GMC.

Cheers for the link, have joined the group!

nicewarmslippers · 17/02/2009 20:11

I am all set to be outraged and write to anyone who will listen but apart from the stupid comment about ff being better than ever before I can't find anythikng too bad. I want to find this bit "After the age of one breast feeding is bizarre, unusual and not necessary. After a year the mother gets more out of breastfeeding than the child does. This act is more for the mother's comfort than the baby's. The bonding process is over and nutritionally the baby no longer needs the milk." as that is clearly CRAZY and needs complaining about, but can't complain if i can't find it!
