Pregnant and Nursing Support Thread

I thought I'd start up a support group, for those of us pregnant, with an older nursling. If you are pregnant at the moment or tandeming or have done in the past and want to add your support, please post!

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have a 2 and a week year old. One of the first things I noticed about being pregnant was my nipples felt bruised like she'd bitten me. 8 weeks later not much has changed and I'm still spending every feed saying "gentle please".

Someone please tell me it gets easier!

I'm also starting to feel quite full and hard.

I keep getting told by my family I'll have problems tandem feeding "and how many mothers do you know who have done it?" My dad was grilling me the other day about tandeming and when I'll stop Tink nursing. He's a radiographer. I made him agree with me "Well, you know yourself that when the adult teeth come through because they're in a totally different order to the milk teeth the jaw changes shape" "Yes and around the same time the soft spot in the jaw fuses" "That change makes it impossible for them to continue nursing, that's why they got called milk teeth" lol how could he argue when he'd just backed my argument up!

chairmumeow, I am 7 months pregnant now and at the beginning of this pregnancy I had really sore nips (they looked bruised) but they are fine now. Is it that your ds is feeding too frequently do you think or could it just be that they are quite sensitive at the moment - if the latter then hang on in there and it will get better I'm sure. The only thing I can suggest is restricting the time your ds stays on the breast ie if he feeds for 20mins normally then restrict to 5/10 mins so that they don't get too sore. Good luck with the pregnancy

jumblies · 18/10/2009 21:48

sorry just realised I spelt your name wrong

ChairmumMiaow · 03/11/2009 15:58

How's everyone going?

DS's initial latch is a bit toe curling still, but he has taken well to the idea that I don't feed him for very long at a time and he's settling well at night without prolonged feeding.

Had a bit of a scare with some bleeding last week but that's finally stopped now and I had a scan, found a heartbeat, foetus correct size for dates so everything's good

mawbroon · 03/11/2009 16:48

Haven't been on this thread for a while!

Things going ok here, except between us, ds and I are now into our 5th week of one of us being stay at home sick. I have forgotten what it looks like outside!!!

DS currently has a really nasty bug. He was swabbed for swine flu, but we haven't had the results yet. I thought last week that it might be, but now I'm thinking it's one of those horrendous stomach bugs.

I have almost no milk and I feel sorry for the wee soul when he asks for it. He wants to nurse even though he's only getting a few drips though, so I am not going to deny him his comfort. My colostrum should be in soon, so perhaps he will be happy with that!

I had two courses of antibiotics for a vile ear infection, which has left me with thrush. I have treated down below with a pessary, but will need to get another one because it's not quite shifted yet. I also thought I had it in my nipples and boobs, but thankfully the deep breast pain on feeding has stopped and canesten on my nipples helped.

Pregnancy wise, I've hardly even had time to remember that I'm pg, so I guess that's sort of a good sign.

HappyAccident · 05/11/2009 15:45

Gosh, I don't think that I've posted on here since I was last pregnant and nursing, but here I am again on a whole new pregnancy, and nursing 2 dc already! (and masquerading under a new name for the time being)

Thankfully am not yet sore (am around 6 or 7 weeks I think), which I was right from the get go last time. Long may that continue! Am going to start mentioning occasionally to dd that she should stop nursing when she turns 4, as I really don't want to be feeding all 3 of them at once! She only feeds once a day at the moment, so hopefully it won't be too traumatic for her . Of course the ideal situation would be if she chose to give up by herself before then, but I can't see that happening.
No one else has found themselves in this position have they?

Sorry to hear that you and ds are both poorly mawbroon. Hope you are both back to full health very soon.

maygirl · 05/11/2009 22:30

Congratulations HappyAccident, and for good scan news ChairmumMiaow.

Hope you and DS on the mend Mawbroon,
I'm about a month ahead of you I think and colostrum is increasing weekly! DS has cut down a bit over the last few days though, not asked for his morning feed or after nursery. He's had 2 days with no milk as I've been out in the evening. Nice bedtime feed tonight though . When he does ask for milk now he also announces he'll stop after baby comes, haven't told him he needs too!

Babieseverywhere · 06/11/2009 08:21

Congratulations HappyAccident

There was one poster who was nursing three (or maybe planning too)
Poster name was cheesy something...maybe worth search for.

All the best with weaning DD, I have also been talking to my 3 year old DD about how when she gets older she won't want milk. She laughs and says 'silly mummy' so I don't think she is ready to even think about weaning yet but I hope it is sinking in at some level.

mawbroon · 06/11/2009 23:05

DS was feeding at bedtime tonight, and he just sighed and said "I wish there was lots of milk". I told him that there will be lots when the baby comes, and he said "I know, but I want it NOW".

I asked him about the "special milk" (colostrum) and he said that there wasn't enough of it, and he didn't really like it. He then said he was going to stop until the baby and the real milk arrive

I asked what I should do if he asks for milk before then, and he said "just say yes!!"

Sounds like the wee soul doesn't actually know what he wants!!

mawbroon · 07/11/2009 22:28

Well, he lasted long! First thing this morning he asked for milk. I reminded him of our conversation last night, and he said he wanted it anyway.

He has about as much willpower as me!!

HappyAccident · 12/11/2009 13:04

Your ds sounds so sweet Mawbroon!

You're right BE - it was cheesemonster. She posted about being pregnant whilst tandem feeding. She hasn't posted for a few months though, so not sure if she's still around.

Babieseverywhere · 12/11/2009 13:41

Mawbroon, That lasted as long as expected !!!

HA, I have put a call out for Cheesemonster here I am wondering how things went for her third baby and how many she is nursing now (somewhere between 0 and 3, I am guessing...LOL)

mawbroon · 14/11/2009 20:17

DS has a really yukky cold/cough and is having trouble nursing. He only had a couple of sooks tonight then announced that he wasn't going to try to do milk until he was better.

It is making me think that he is nearly there.

But I've been saying that for about 2yrs!!

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/11/2009 20:21

lol Mawbroon. It does all sound encouraging. Dd has never missed a day except if we've been parted (almost never, except when I was being induced with ds).

Have given up with name changing btw, so am out as HappyAccident.

Thanks for putting a call out for cheesemonster BE.

Babieseverywhere · 14/11/2009 20:56

My DD has missed one day of nursing in 3.2 years and that was when I was in labout in hospital with her younger brother !!!

Babieseverywhere · 14/11/2009 20:58

CantSleepWontSleep, OMG, missed you outing yourself !!!

Congratulations You really don't like sleep do you.

CantSleepWontSleep · 14/11/2009 21:00

It's much overrated BE .

mawbroon · 14/11/2009 21:31

Hey CSWS, I think you are the first namechanger I have ever managed to guess on my 4+ years on MN!

ChairmumMiaow · 10/12/2009 07:33

Hello all,

Things are not the most fun here. Pretty sure my milk has gone (although I think DS swallows ocassionally at least in the morning, I can't express a single drop ) or as near as dammit. Its wierd. On one hand DS has dropped feeds a fair bit and rarely asks in the day, and only has about 2 minutes at bedtime which is nice. On the other hand its a bit uncomfortable (not sore or anything, I just don't like him feeding for more than a few minutes).

I really wanted to tandem to keep my (never very good I think) supply up to hopefully make things easier with the next one so I am gritting my teeth at the moment, and hoping he keeps going till my colostrum comes in (and it did quite early with DS, so lets hope) and that it gets a bit better then.

We've had another scan and all is well - due date is now one day after my 30th which is both brilliant and crap

Still very very tired and sick although I'll be 14 weeks tomorrow - was hoping the second trimester normality I felt last time would kick in by now, especially as I'm off on holiday next week!

Anyway, I'm off for my first night away from DS properly (he stayed with his auntie once before but I was just 5 mins walk away). Off to London with DH for a show!! Perhaps I will get to sleep late (fingers crossed)

How is everyone else doing. Anyone nearly due?

Babieseverywhere · 01/01/2010 22:08

CantSleepWontSleep, Looks like I am joining you. Tandem nursing and another one on the way !!!

maygirl · 01/01/2010 23:11

Congratulations BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

36 weeks here, just the one nursling!

DS announced 'I don't have milk anymore' at bedtime Christmas day. I thought how poignant, self weaning on xmas day, 1mth before new sibling due. Next morning he changed his mind!

Gangle · 01/01/2010 23:28

Does anyone know if you can restart breasfeeding? I am 28 weeks pregnant and breastfed DS until about 4 months when, under pressure from DH, I stopped. Wish I hadn't as he loved breastfeeding so much. I plan to let him feed when my milk comes in for DS2, if he wants to, but wondered if my milk would come back if I started again now??

maygirl · 01/01/2010 23:56

Hi Gangle

I think for most of us our milk supply dwindled during pregnancy, even whilst feeding. Mine had gone by around 4 months I think. You could see if he would still feed now, you will probably have colostrum by now.

greensnail · 03/01/2010 19:57

Hi, can I join you all? I'm 17 weeks pregnant and feeding my 12 month old DD. She's really reducing her feeds at the moment though and I feel like i don't have much milk anymore. She only fed morning and bedtime today. When the colostrum comes in does it change gradually from milk to colostrum? Yesterday my milk was looking a bit yellow but today its white again which seems a bit strange. I was definitely leaking colostrum by 20 weeks when i was pregnant with DD so am expecting I'll get colostrum soon, will be interesting to see how DD reacts.

maygirl · 03/01/2010 21:18

Hi greensnail, my milk went from one side first, the other side fluctuated a bit between milk and colostrum for a while before both went fully to colostrum.

greensnail · 04/01/2010 09:57

Thanks maygirl that's helpful. It all feels a bit unknown at the moment. Midwife told me I probably wouldn't get colostrum at all if i carry on feeding
