I think a distorted picture may be being painted

I was once given a £1 and a cornish pasty "for me" by the Salvation Army as i sat in a shop doorway surrounded by bags (had been shopping). Aside from this-no.

I don't think we are imagining disapproving looks though. Most posters have mentioned that they haven't encountered adverse remarks from strangers, but they have had negative comments from friends and relatives.

...That makes me think that discomfort with public breastfeeding is quite widespread, and a good number of the general populace are unhappy with it (tough on them imo!), but lack the balls to challenge (thank God!)

meandmyflyingmachine · 22/06/2007 15:02

I don't think I had any overtly disapproving looks either. A teenage waiter once when absolutely puce when he realised what I was doing, and some people's eyes seemed to continually slide over - the way they do when you are trying so hard not to stare - but no real disapproval.

meandmyflyingmachine · 22/06/2007 15:03

went puce...

And perhaps I am just blissfully unobservant...

handlemecarefully · 22/06/2007 15:07

might be the latter flying machine - unless the many posters on here who report disapproving remarks from friends and family have hugely unrepresentative and atypical social networks

Miaou · 22/06/2007 15:08

Never had any disapproving looks or comments from anyone and have bf three dcs so far. In fact, when I had ds (in Scotland) I had lots of people come up to me and say "how lovely to see someone bfing in public" (usually little old ladies too!). Shame really, I've always had a witty riposte at the ready

indiasmum · 22/06/2007 15:09

not from strangers.

but i have from pita mil

skidaddle · 22/06/2007 16:11

never from strangers, just family

TheOldestCat · 22/06/2007 19:43

No negative comments for me either. I thought 'bingo, here we go' and started mentally flicking through my well-prepared retorts when a guard at London Bridge station approached me as I fed DD. But he just wanted to tell me if it was ever too cold to feed the little 'un, I was just to ask a member of staff and they'd give me the key to a room I could use. "Awww, it's a lovely thing to see!" he added.

Remember that, lactating Londoners! Could be useful in the winter if you're stuck at London Bridge....

Boco · 22/06/2007 19:44

Never from strangers, only crazy step mother.

I've had no comments, either positive or negative.

I even fed my daughter in restaurants in the city and noone batted an eyelid, although lots of people noticed because it is so unusual to see babies who lunch in restaurants where everyone else is in suits.

Eve · 22/06/2007 19:56

never had a negative comment.

In JOhn Lewis once some lovely ladies went and got me a coffee and a cake as i was in the cafe on my own with a screaming hungry baby.

JOhn lewis staff couldn't have done enough.

Jacanne · 22/06/2007 20:04

Not in real life - have read some fairly nasty ones on-line though

Only real- life comments have been positive - usually from older women. I don't think I invite comment though

I'm pretty sure that my PIL would like to comment on the fact that I'm still BF and someone at toddler group called me a big softie but that's about it.

ShowOfHands · 22/06/2007 20:05

Certainly interesting that more people receive negative comments from friends and family than strangers. I was criticised in my own home by a rather close family member for 'embarrassing him'. So I can't embarrass his ridiculous sensibilities but he can offend mine?

I have had one indirect negative comment in a GP's surgery. A sour faced old man informed the receptionist that 'that woman's brazenly feeding you know' and the receptionist breezily replied 'I know, isn't it lovely?'

The positive comments have been astounding, coupled with the odd comment about why dd is so noisy whilst feeding. To be frank, it does sound like I'm killing her with milk. Fed at a children's birthday party last week and a group of 3 and 4 year olds were more interested in me than the party food. Had lots of questions about flavours, where the milk is made, what it tastes like, what it feels like etc. It was lovely.

msappropriate · 22/06/2007 20:07

never

TheBlonde · 22/06/2007 20:07

Never had any negative comments

MadamePlatypus · 22/06/2007 20:10

Washersaurus · 22/06/2007 20:14

margoandjerry · 22/06/2007 20:15

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 22/06/2007 20:19

Never either. Only ever positive comments. DO IT girls! It makes you feel great.

lemonaid · 22/06/2007 20:19

Never.

SallyAllbright · 22/06/2007 20:22

me too

MegaLegs · 22/06/2007 20:25

Never - even when I was feeding ds1 when he was huge, one old lady looked at us misty eyed and said that it was something she still missed doing.
