I think a distorted picture may be being painted

I was once given a £1 and a cornish pasty "for me" by the Salvation Army as i sat in a shop doorway surrounded by bags (had been shopping). Aside from this-no.

never - I think with DD1 i went around in a complete mummy bubble and it never occurred to me anyone might disapprove till I heard about women being thrown out of art galleries and stuff, and heard the odd warped throwback ranting about it on radio phone-ins - was totally shocked!!

ClarenceC · 21/06/2007 16:11

I was quite surprised by the number of people who came over to tell me how wonderful it was to see (i'd usually got ready with some barbed response in case they'd come over to tell me off). In France they thought i was weird to be feeding at 4m - they kept asking us how old DS was - a French friend told me that women get v little maternity leave and so tend to stop quite early. My mother was exceedingly uncomfortable with me bf in public (despite the fact that she bf all 4 of us for at least a year!). MIL was great. Did chicken out of feeding on a commuter train when I was surrounded by 7 suited and booted men as I couldn't bear the potential of screaming and sweating with milk spraying around! Fed DS until 14m but kept it to myself at work and didn't do it in public for the last 4-5 mths, partly becase DS was so easily distracted. About 20 years ago, I do remember seeing 2 oldish women telling a bf lady in the restaurant in JL in Norwich that she was being disgusting!

Jackstini · 21/06/2007 16:17

Nope never yet and still bfing dd 15 mo - always ready with a comment in case but not had need to!
Had occassional staring which doesn't bother me but mostly lots of smiles and people asking if I need a drink fetching etc.

flibbertyjibbet · 21/06/2007 16:20

No, never strangers, they always seemed to smile knowingly and nicely at me - but the comments I got from my inlaws were something else!

Gizmo · 21/06/2007 16:21

My boobs have never attracted any attention...

Is that a good thing???

ChristyC · 21/06/2007 16:22

Never. Breast fed my son until 7 months old and my daughter until she was 20 months. Sometimes family would say that maybe I ought to think about stopping but never anything derogatory. What I always used to love was other childrens facination with a child being breastfed - if only all adults could share their amazement at something so natural!

SpawnChorus · 21/06/2007 16:25

No negative comments

determination · 21/06/2007 16:35

I have only ever been complimented and that was once over my 2years 3.5months of bfing!

terramum · 21/06/2007 16:36

Never had any bad comments or looks at all in 3 years I have been bfing DS. In fact I have only had one comment about bfing at all - a lovely elderly lady came up to me when I was feeding 2-ish month old DS in Little Chef & said how nice it was to see a bfing baby - I think thats given me the confidence to keep feeding in public ever since, even when I was using shields from 1-4 months.

imnot27 · 21/06/2007 16:36

Never at all. In my experience of 3 children, people in general have been totally fab re bfeeding, carrying buggies up steps, carting bags off trains etc etc

Gingerbear · 21/06/2007 16:39

Never from strangers, but it freaks out my brother, who runs out of the room saying 'aaarrrgggh. no, no, no, not again!' I take great delight in freaking him out

Curmudgeonlett · 21/06/2007 16:40

No never from strangers

from my mother yes .. but not strangers

Niecie · 21/06/2007 17:04

I have never had any comments either, despite feeding for ds1 for 13 months and ds2 for 16 months.

Interesting somebody says their mother has never seen anybody breastfeeding in public - I think it is pretty difficult to detect if you are wearing a T-shirt and just hitch it up. There is no need to 'flash' if you aren't comfortable revealing all to the world, which I wasn't. I must admit though, I didn't go looking for trouble in that I didn't look round the room to see if anybody was watching me. Just kept my head down and got on with the job.

Also heartened to see how many people breastfed their babies for more than 6 months - I have always felt in a bit of an oddity for doing it so long because I didn't know anybody else who did it, but there never seemed a good reason to stop before the ds's had got bored of it.

Tommy · 21/06/2007 17:06

no - not even feeding DS2 at a year old in church....

auntymandy · 21/06/2007 17:08

It is sad though that families feel free to give negative comments.

podglet · 21/06/2007 17:38

nothing but praise and positive comments, even on packed commuter trains and in church during his own christening service!

eemie · 21/06/2007 17:42

Never had a nasty comment. Fed in public all over the place - gardens, parks, bus shelters, church, restaurants, in the car in various lay-bys and car parks.

Very discreet apart from dd's slurping. Hardly anyone seemed to notice. A few smiles and one or two encouraging comments over 12 months.

prettybird · 21/06/2007 17:55

Never has a comment - fed ds til he was 13 months. Live in Glasgow, but fed him in Wales, France, Greece, South Africa......

CorrieDale · 21/06/2007 18:16

Never had anything other than approving comments. Even when BFing toddler DS after a fall in the library, a granny just said 'he's a very lucky little boy to still be fed by his mummy'.

amidaiwish · 21/06/2007 18:25

none!
just smiles

Ceolas · 21/06/2007 18:28
