you tube clip here

sma site

way to get round the new advertising rules, which forbid them from saying "close to breastmilk" &c
anyone like to complain? I would like them, very much, to have to change their logo and slogan again. especially as they have clearly spent quite a bit of wonga on it.

That was to 3andnomore btw lol. Not getting into talk about titties and beavers.

kiskidee · 14/04/2007 23:26

PRObiotics are living cells which actively go to work inside a baby's gut and into his body to fend off diseases.

Prebiotics are not living. they MAY assist already existing defenses a baby has to fight disease. May in caps because there is no proof available to say that they are actually in forms that babies, with immature guts can use. in fact there is little proof taht they are beneficial to grown ups too. just another marketing gimmick to get people to think how 'close' to bm formula is.

Twinklemegan · 14/04/2007 23:27

Sorry to drag you ladies back to the serious stuff, but please what is the difference between probiotics and prebiotics?

Twinklemegan · 14/04/2007 23:27

xpost lol!

Twinklemegan · 14/04/2007 23:28

Kiskidee - well I was taken in by that one then!

harpsichordcarrier · 14/04/2007 23:31

also, isn't there a big question mark as to how effective either would be when subjected to drying/preservation?

Sometimes harpsi...

And its not ladygarden twinkle, its 'vulva'

kiskidee · 14/04/2007 23:33

PRObiotics and what it can do:

Prebiotics

(description taken from here: www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/pre_0326.shtml)

DESCRIPTION
Prebiotics are defined as nondigestible food ingredients that may beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or the activity of a limited number of bacteria in the colon. Thus, to be effective, prebiotics must escape digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and be used by a limited number of the microorganisms comprising the colonic microflora. Prebiotics are principally oligosaccharides. They mainly stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria, for which reason they are referred to as bifidogenic factors.

Twinklemegan · 14/04/2007 23:34

I think it was 3andnomore who mentioned ladygarden VVV. I'm staying out of it!

hunkermunker · 14/04/2007 23:35

I'm puzzled then, Kiskidee - do you think they should be saying it contains probiotics?

Because if they're living cells, isn't it impossible for formula to contain them?

3andnomore · 14/04/2007 23:37

lol///vu;va it is...well...ds2 who is 4 is rather interested in this whole Baby thing and people are rather shocked whean he starts to talk about when he was a Baby and came out of his mummys vagina,,,,lololol....so funny to watch people squirm

kiskidee · 14/04/2007 23:37

they should be saying taht BM contains PRObiotics.
and that their products contain PREbiotics.

they are saying that both products contain PREbiotics.

who else can we complain to Food and Safety standards?

Advertising Watchdogs? who are they?

hunkermunker · 14/04/2007 23:38

Oh, dur - of course!

I'm even more unspeakably angry than I was!

melpomene · 14/04/2007 23:38

Just been looking at the chat forums on the Cow & Gate site.

this poster is giving rusks to a 7 week old baby. All the replies support her decision. .

hunkermunker · 14/04/2007 23:39

You can email Baby Milk Action

3andnomore · 14/04/2007 23:40

what is wrong with that then....apparently we all should support mothers in their decisions and not judge so much

hunkermunker · 14/04/2007 23:41

Melpomene...words fail me.

Twinklemegan · 14/04/2007 23:47

What the...

3andnomore · 14/04/2007 23:47

btw...just incase you haen't noticed...|I was being sarcastic

Twinklemegan · 14/04/2007 23:48

Yes I realised that lol. But I can't believe - giving a 7 week old baby rusks. And "Not even the health visitors and midwives know as much as you do". FGS!

AitchTwoOh · 14/04/2007 23:52

pmsl at the cow and gate thread. and people thought you were making that kinda stuff up to be a preachy PITA, hunks...

3andnomore · 14/04/2007 23:53

Bad isn't it...and completely shows just how much society has been lured into "wrong" knowledge...i.e making people think they act ob gut instict...when really it is all about social conditioning and the stories we hear of our elders about babys being weaned rather young, and teir conditioning of how breastmilk is not sufficient and crap like that...sigh

Twinklemegan · 14/04/2007 23:53

OK, here are DH's words of wisdom.

A heart...

.. or an arse.... yes an arse when someone's just farted.

hunkermunker · 14/04/2007 23:54

Yes, I know they did, Aitch. Sanctimonious, moi?

I'm avoiding the other weaning thread as I am wrung out from the last one, btw

harpsichordcarrier · 14/04/2007 23:57

yes cultural conditioning is incredibly important.
how many times have you heard - oh my mother didn't have enough milk, I didn't have enough milk.
it is insidious imo.
