littlepiggie: I don't recall her upsetting the child at all, I recall the child being a bit confused and not interested, that's all

LittleSarah · 13/11/2006 20:55

I saw the program and honestly didn't think the toddler was upset, confused maybe. That is how I read it anyway.

I do think it was probably a lost cause but the mother had read something/believed you could sometimes start late. I am sure she realised she was wrong, gave up and they are getting on fine.

DumbledoresGirl · 13/11/2006 20:55

I used obscene to describe breatfeeding a 10 year old girl and I am happy to argue the point as long as you like. I used obscene in a loose general way, as you would know if you read my second post.

hamstermunker · 13/11/2006 20:55

Yes, I saw the programme - I will have to watch it again, but I only recall what MP does - confused, not interested - not the reaction of a child being abused...

hamstermunker · 13/11/2006 20:56

Jeez, what do people think abuse is if they use it in the context of bfeeding?!

morningpaper · 13/11/2006 20:56

Dumbledore: It is more obscene or less obscene than a human adult drinking cow milk?

ComeOVeneer · 13/11/2006 20:57

Groundhog day.

emkana · 13/11/2006 20:58

How long before somebody comes on the thread and suggests that after a certain age, if you have to give human milk, at least express and do it in a cup?

belgianmama · 13/11/2006 20:59

I didn't see the programme, but did want to, so I might stay up for it. I bf ds til 19m and dd until few days short of 2y. So although I did do 'extended' bf'ing, I also think that past 4y is a bit long. Possibly not obscene, but not quite right either.
Found the link very interesting either, proving to me that bf'ing my 2 for as long as I did was a natural thing to do AND was actually not extended as all when you think about it

FrannyandZooey · 13/11/2006 20:59

Hey, I'm over half way there now

bramblina · 13/11/2006 21:01

I'm sure Kirsty admitted to being a mner after the first airing.

The way boobs are portrayed in lad's mags these days, no wonder the next generation are confused in to what they are there for. I have a few "peers" shall I say, sisters, both think their boobs are "sexual objects", and wait for it, one of them has 2 children. Good Mum otherwise, but these opinions really sadden me.

terramum · 13/11/2006 21:03

Sorry DumbleDG didnt see your 2nd post - creepy is soooo much better

dreamcatcher · 13/11/2006 21:03

Look, I didn't want to offend anyone.I asked where the line is drawn, I didn't say it was abusive. Though if the adopted toddler did not want to be breast fed and the woman was trying to force it, then I think that's getting too close for comfort.
As for being against bf in public, I could not be more for it. I always did it when my kids were hungry, even at the tesco checkout once rather than have a screaming baby.
Our kids have to live in society, and sadly that means wearing clothes in public, using a toilet, using cutlery etc. None of these things are natural either.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/11/2006 21:04

PARP FUCKING PARP. I can see the angry villagers grouping already with their pitchforks.

You bunch of freaks!!!!!

And I am not referring to extended breastfeeders when I say that.
Oh, and I concur with anything and everything hunker says. (ON THIS THREAD).

littlepiggie · 13/11/2006 21:05

thinking back to the days when boob where only on show to my dh, for nothing more tyan his pleasure..............

anyway back on track.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/11/2006 21:06

YUK - how disgusting LP

FrannyandZooey · 13/11/2006 21:07

You can't force a child to breastfeed. You really can't. Try it if you don't believe me.

littlepiggie · 13/11/2006 21:07
Grin
DumbledoresGirl · 13/11/2006 21:08

Can I just share someting interesting with you all? I'm not getting into a breastfeeding row here so this is my way of answering all of you who are offended by my "obscene" comment.

I have just looked up the word in the dictionary. Obscene means "filthy" and "indecent, especially in a sexual sense", and I would agree with you all that breastfeeding a 10 year old girl is not obscene in that sense. however, obscene also means "offensive to the senses or the sensibility" and so I find my choice of word unexpectedly accurate because the idea of a 10 year old brestfeeding does offend my snesibility.

Don't all jump down my throats. I have breastfed 4 children, all for longer than the health authorities recommended at the time they were babies, and I have always breastfed openly in public with no shame or embarrassment at all so I don't need anyone of the breastfeeding supporters club to think I am letting the side down. Nevertheless, I find the idea of a 10 year old breastfeeding, as defined by the dictionary, obscene.

FrannyandZooey · 13/11/2006 21:10

I think the primary meaning of filthy and indecent is what we are all thinking of when you use that word DG. I think you need to be very careful indeed in choosing your words, around this emotive issue, as you would for any other sensitive subject.

DumbledoresGirl · 13/11/2006 21:11

Well, I have explained myself now F&Z. but let's see how many other people read my first post and no other and then think they can jump on me.

terramum · 13/11/2006 21:12

Fair enough DG - but I am interested in what precisely offends you about a 10 year old simply gaining nutrition & comfort from their mother. Not trying to be nasty or anything - just genuinely curious (especially as I really dont find it offensive at all) and trying to understand where you are coming from.

littlepiggie · 13/11/2006 21:14

as far as the 10 year old, the program also said that the 7 year old was struggling as she was loosing the ability to bf effectivly. (sorry if this is coming out wrong), this would make me think that around 7 is the natural age that bf is meant to finish.

DumbledoresGirl · 13/11/2006 21:17

Hmm difficult. I guess it is the same as seeing a - what is the pc term? NT? - child in nappies. I am all for retaining childhood for a decent length of time - I hate seeing 7 year old dressed as little slappers (oops! has DG just thrown in another offensive comment for some other Mners to get enraged by?) but I don't think we shoud baby our children beyond their baby years. We can all debate when is the age for weaning or for toilet training or for anything else, and we all know that there is no definitive age for any of these things, but I do think most of us, in our hearts believe that by 10 a child should not be breastfeeding.
