\link{http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/health_medical/article360047.ece\or maybe not}

I particularly like the paragraph about the German nutritionist Wink. Now that bit has totally convinced me that the benefits of b/feeding are being exaggerated. [snort]

Honestly, what a piece of cr*p.

oh what a load of complete and utter pants.

Basically she is saying "breastfeeding was a bit too much like hard work for me, so therefore nobody should do it"

what total crap Angry

exactly carolina.it's like saying 'well i had a baby but nobody told me it was going to take effort and that my life would change'
and how f pretentious that she had to sit reading a german grammar book????!!! why? why not read a novel? or something entertaining?
because that wouldn't make it look like she was WAY too intelligent to be doing this mothering lark!

hunkermunkfish · 25/04/2006 13:10

Ha ha ha - got as far as "wanted my body back" and wondering what the feck state a three weeks post-birth body is in to want back?! I want my body back, too right - but I want back the one I had at 18 years of age please.

Since I have no fecking chance of that, I'll keep bfeeding Grin

hunkermunkfish · 25/04/2006 13:15

Not a very balanced article.

As for the German vocab book - arse!

And the German nutritionist? Mental!

Highlander · 25/04/2006 13:15

the most miserable thing about BF is when the little buggers mistake a roll of post-partum flab for your boob Wink

NotQuiteCockney · 25/04/2006 13:16

I found some of it fair, if entirely subjective. But her discussion of the benefits of breastfeeding was insane.

First of all, medical studies always say "may". Risks aren't guaranteed harm. Smoking may cause lung cancer. That means, we know that smoking increases your risk of lung cancer, but not every smoker gets lung cancer.

Second of all, a German nutritionist? With anecdotal evidence? Come on.

I know, I know, preaching to the choir, but honestly, this sort of thing is just ludicrous.

alexsmum · 25/04/2006 13:16

my ds's have latched onto inappropriate places! one did my cheek! and one my elbow and one did dh which was funnyGrin

NotQuiteCockney · 25/04/2006 13:17

Oh, my DSes always went for my chin. I don't think I have a very norkish chin, but apparently I'm wrong.

Blu · 25/04/2006 13:18

flutterbee - yes, fair enough, just as you've said it - but ludicrous comments from a nutritionist about breast-fed babies being half starved???
Silly, pointless, and irresponsible!

MrsBigD · 25/04/2006 13:18

Grin Hausfrau

I do sypmathise with the 'body back' remark on both points...

I felt like I had a limpet attached to me when ds had arrived Grin... I have to admit to occasionally having referred to ds as a parasite BlushGrin

hunkermunkerfish... no way do I want my body back when I was 19... I was huge LOL... I'd rather have have lets say Zeta Jones body (don't like her but her curves ar o.k. LOL)

Caligula · 25/04/2006 13:19

It just irritates me that she feels guilty so she has to justify her choice by spreading misinformation about breast feeding. It's such a badly researched, ignorant article and for any pregnant woman reading it who had had the normal amount of information about breastfeeding (ie sweet bugger-all) it would put them off completely.

alexsmum · 25/04/2006 13:19

i don't think my elbow is norkish either!!! especially not my norks!
god i remember b/fing ds2 when a friend was there and her commenting that my breast was bigger than his headBlush
Grin

hunkermunkfish · 25/04/2006 13:20

Agree with Caligula (again!).

MrsBigD · 25/04/2006 13:21

alexmum... lucky you :) I thought I would have no probs bf as my gran was a regular milk cow (no disrespect!) but for me it was hell!

Highlander · 25/04/2006 13:25

alex - I remember thinking my norks were huuuuuuuuuge comapred to the size of DS. I used to worry that his stomach would explode with all that milk, especially as you have it drummed into you that their tummies are the size of a walnut.

Nightynight · 25/04/2006 13:27

yes, agree with Caligula
I couldnt empathise with the author of the article at all, though Ive experienced everything she described. She just came across as a really selfish person, though I appreciate that one article isnt really enough to judge her.

alexsmum · 25/04/2006 13:29

i found b/fing immensely hard for the first couple of months.i was engorged and sore - i had to wear a bra in bed because literally otherwise i couldn't turn over.i had mastitis, bleeding nipples etc.
but i'm very stubborn, and i'd decided i was going to b/f so i did.i had a fab m/w who helped and my dh is very supportive.once i got the knack i carried on until 10months with ds1 and 12 months with ds2. i think women need to know that very often it is hard at first but it does get better.

alexsmum · 25/04/2006 13:30

mrsbigd-apparently one of my great great grandmothers was a wet nurse!!!!Shock

CorrieDale · 25/04/2006 13:34

I can't believe anybody could seriously say "If society is going to promote breastfeeding so much..." What???? When did this happen? How did I miss it? Must have been too busy feeding my "half-starved" child.

CorrieDale · 25/04/2006 13:34

Whoops

MrsBigD · 25/04/2006 13:45

alexmum... I admire anybody who sticks with bf despite of pain, bleeding nipples etc.

I just couldn't 'hack' it, was crying heaps and miserable and yes... feeling sorry for myself... in the end dediced happy mama = happy baby and gave up without feeling guilty... I tried, I 'failed', kids still thriving End of Grin.

moondog · 25/04/2006 13:51

One very confused and foolish woman.

'God no I don't fell guilty about it at all!
I'm perfectly happy with my choice! Happy mum =Happy baby! That's why I have to go on and on and on about how happy I am with the fact that I use formula. Me???? Guilty?? No no no no no!!''

Remind you of anyone???????

moondog · 25/04/2006 13:52

am,do you know anything about your wetnursing ancestor??
Wonder when this died out??
