It's worth noting that babies do die in the first world because of formula: I've seen stats for deaths in the US because of formula. This isn't to say that there are specific deaths they can blame on formula, but that there are "extra" deaths in formula-fed babies (often gastro stuff).

moondog · 10/11/2005 10:42

Lol wordsmith.
I am soooo amused by the hardcore who claim to find this subject so tedious yet can't keep away.

I will keep an eye out for future posts from you of great Social and Political Import.

Enid · 10/11/2005 10:43

moondog and wordsmith

I demand you both parp yourselves immediatement

moondog · 10/11/2005 10:44

Ican't help myself Enid.

Indulge me.

Enid · 10/11/2005 10:46

oh alright then

Enid · 10/11/2005 10:46

can't I do that incredibly irritating line thing:

moondog · 10/11/2005 10:48

Be my guest.
I'll try something too.

Wheeeeeee!!!

popsycal · 10/11/2005 10:59

It's still going then...

still no reply

Wordsmith - you mention about getting worked up about something that matters. this does matter
as do many other things
Shall I get worked up about everything at once?
What would you like me to get worked up about?

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 10/11/2005 11:05

Here's a thread for all those who think this isn't worth getting worked up over when there are Important Things going on in the world(!) to tell me what I ought to be getting worked up about.

Don't think you'll get away with that sort of behaviour, OO

vickiyumyum · 10/11/2005 11:36

nqc - are not the deaths related to formula feeding and gastric problems to do with poor standards of hygeiene and sterilisation though?

(not that it really matters just wondering if there was something else that i had missed, as most of the research that i read to do with formula in developed countries was to do with not making up correctly e.g baby screaming so put extra scoops in to make it less hungry and baby getting dehydrated and poor hygeiene. so just was curious as to finding out other reasons.thanks)

hunkermunker · 10/11/2005 11:39

Can be that, but can also be formula that's contaminated during manufacture. Periodically they recall it because it has a particular bug in it (can't remember the name of it - does anyone know what I'm talking about?!).

NotQuiteCockney · 10/11/2005 13:02

They really don't know what causes the deaths. Wait, here's a cite . They estimate the US deaths at 9,335 babies per year. The deaths are from: "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS); heart, circulatory and respiratory failure; diarrhea; respiratory illnesses; cancer; and low birth-weight and preterm babies". So maybe they do know. The diarrhea stuff could be about sterilisation, but the rest isn't.

suzi2 · 10/11/2005 13:33

OMG - can't believe I've not read this thread until now! Looks like I missed a good debate

Wasn't aware of the law - must tell my local Tesco off who have a tin of SMA in the bargain bin as the tin is all bashed...

Racers · 10/11/2005 13:35

Make sure it's stage one, SMA progress would be 'ok' - afaik!

EmMUK74 · 10/11/2005 15:23

this is such an interesting discussion, can't help myself, have to join in.

Some background:
I worked as an engineer building sanitation arrangements in africa and support the opposition to the promotion of formula in the developing world - I saw mums who couldn't feed their babies themselves because they had moved to formula but now couldn't make formula safely!!
I wrote all over the place ensuring that my opposition to formula companies was known.
I refused to have bottles in the house when I was pregnant, I was going to breastfeed no matter what.
I tried and tried to BF my DD but she developed severe jaundice, was taken into special care and she was given formula.
I expressed BM for 3 weeks for her but only produced 5ml for 45mins expressing. Only at that time did we find out that I couldn't produce any milk - my hormone balance is totally out of wack!

All that said....I fully agree with the sentiments that the WHO rules and the law exist for a good reason and that laws should be enforced BUT...formula feeding is very expensive, over £7 a week for newborns and increasing by the time your baby is at the peak of milk consumption before weaning. Add to that the cost of water (yes, we pay by the litre!) and the bottles etc etc etc and its an expensive business.

I don't know what the answer is formula should not be promoted as the best answer but for those of us in a situation where our children would die without it (and no, I am not being over dramatic!) we should be cut some slack on both the cost of formula and the guilt for having to use it. DD is a healthy little 11 week old girl now and I did what I had to do for her but I still beat myself up, I could just do without the constant guilt trips about how breast is best. did you know that the formula companies even send you that message if you write to them for advice?

just wanted to join in, not criticising anyone, just providing another view.

moondog · 10/11/2005 15:28

mMUK,people like you are completely and utterly exampt from any of these views.
Sorry you had such a dreadful time.

There isn't one of us on MN who would object to the use of formula in a life or death situation.
(Actually,I don't care who uses formula, just don't want a 'choice' forced on anyone.)

popsycal · 10/11/2005 16:54

em - i stopped bf ds1 for severe jaundice reasons.......
ds2 happily ddnt suffer in the same way

i agree with moondog in terms of the choice thing

no word from mothercare....

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 10/11/2005 17:27

Formula does save lives. I don't think anyone disagrees with that.

I'm just nervous about it being advertised, at all, including price deals.

Wordsmith · 10/11/2005 19:48

Glad to see this is still going!! .

Just one point: how can a choice be forced on anyone?

Surely the force is in not offering a choice?

But perhaps I'm being stupid....

moondog · 10/11/2005 19:55

Yes you are.
'Choice' was used in an ironic sense, hence inverted commas.

HTH

Wordsmith · 10/11/2005 20:11

Thanks for that.
As I'm so stupid, please explain why you were being ironic, and what point you were trying to make.
I really am interested, honestly.

moondog · 10/11/2005 20:25

Well wm,artificial feed manufacturers love to protest that they are merely offering a choice, but a brief foray into their methods will soon demonstrate beyond doubt that nothing is further from the truth.
Their only goal is to sabotage something that is perfect and free.

Have a look at the Babymilk Action website if you are interested and/or read 'The Politics of Breastfeeding by Gabrielle Palmer.
