Is there a breastfeeding while pregnant thread already?

If not would anyone like to join me?

Experienced and first time feeding while pregnant mums welcome. I'm almost 11 weeks with DC2 and am still feeding DS (15 months). We are currently working at night weaning him (although he is incredibly persistent) and he still feeds 3/4/5 time per day, although he is starting to eat more solids.

I don't know anyone in RL who has fed whilst pregnant or tandemed and it would be great to be able to share frustrations etc with others.

So please come and join me, or point me in the direction of the right thread

Hi all.
Just thought I'd bump this for the poster who started the other thread Grin

Hope you are all well

crochetcircle · 19/01/2012 20:57

Ahem, hello all

I'm going to join this thread and hope that it comes back to life again as it would be good to have some advice and company. I'm currently 9 weeks pregnant with no. 2. DD is 7 months old and still breastfeeding, although my partner now puts her to sleep at night and does any night wakings (the joys of having a 'pregnant card' to play again!) so she isn't ebf anymore.

Its still early days for me, and I'm aware that pregnancies often fail at this stage, but still am hopeful that this one will continue.

I had nipple soreness for maybe 2-3 weeks at the beginning but thankfully this has subsided. Did anyone else experience this? Will the soreness return later?

Look forward to meeting others who are in, or have been in, a similar situation.

thefurryone · 20/01/2012 15:03

Hi crochetcircle, thanks for bringing this thread up I was looking for it the other day. Although I have to say it's one I never ever imagined I'd be contributing on!

Currently 5 weeks, DS is 8 months old. I've been mix feeding, with one bottle a day since 7 weeks, and as he's now at nursery he has quite a few more bottles, so currently only feeding in mornings and evenings.

To be honest I'm in two minds about whether or not I can keep this up, particularly as the tiredness is starting to kick in. Also, I had such a hard time establishing BF with DS, and the thought of tandem feeding scares me considerably.

Anyway for now I'm pregnant and breastfeeding, will just have to see how it goes!

crochetcircle · 20/01/2012 21:16

hi furryone

so there are more of us! congratulations! it was a bit of a surprise for us too, although I knew it was possible as I've been having periods for a while. Still, didn't think it would happen and it really took some getting used to as a reality!

I felt very low about continuing breastfeeding in the beginning too and like I could never manage it, but now I am getting into the swing of being pregnant again (remembering to eat, getting lots of rest etc) I'm finding it easier. Also she has really cut down her milk since starting solids, and feeds very quickly, and I was already starting to find bfing less tiring and physically demanding. So I'm hoping to carry on a bit longer.

I don't fancy tandem feeding either, mainly because I had set 1 year as a target for bf DD so was planning to have stopped by then anyway. Now I'm pregnant I will see how I get on and wouldn't beat myself up for stopping a bit sooner if it does get a bit much.

how are your nips?

BatCave · 22/01/2012 13:36

Hey guys i've been looking for this thread! I'll have a go at reading back at some point.

I've just found out I'm pregnant, I'm 5 weeks too thefurryone . I'm breastfeeding my 19month old DD, a sudden drop in supply was a little hint that I may be pg Wink .

She only feeds twice a day morning and bedtime and this has been the same for a few months now. My nipples are just starting to become a little tender. I'm not looking forward to soreness really Confused she's a feeding gymnast as it is...

I'm hoping that the pregnancy will help her wean herself fairly easily. The problem I have is that she HATES cows milk on its own. She likes it mixed with expressed milk (even just a tiny bit will do) or she just turns her nose up! I'm not against tandem feeding really but I don't think I'd have much support.

Would be nice to be able to chat about this, I don't know any other pregnant mums who are still bf.

Tracingpaper · 31/01/2012 20:45

Hi ladies

I've just had an early scan (today) and I'm 8 weeks pregnant, my ds is 8 1/2 months and I'm still breastfeeding him. I've only had one cycle, back in November so it was thought I was 12 weeks pg, but it looks like i have to put up with the sickness for a while yet!
Recently, I've been trying with no luck whatsoever to get ds to take formula, he pushes it away from his mouth. He drink water great from his cup but as soon as I out formula in he's having none of it. He was ebf for 5months, solids introduced and never taken a bottle.

I'm pleased to find some others out there who are experiencing the same. I'm so tired, ds feeds morning, 2pm and bedtime. I love bf him, yet hoping that he self weans when my milk "changes", my concerns are will he..? Will he ever drink the formula, when is too early to give cows milk as a drink..? I'm sure all will become clear soon.

My only other issue is... I go back to work next week, 5 days a week, 8-2pm, I'm sure I'm going to be knackered (I already am!)... I'd like to feed ds until May when he'll be 12months if that's possible, what's everyone else planning?
Tx

thefurryone · 02/02/2012 11:33

Hi everyone,

I'm now 7 weeks and starting to experience tender nipples, which is nice.

How are you all feeling? Compared to when I was at this stage with DS I'm positively chipper, no sickness and just a touch of nausea (although I am farting A LOT Blush). I have a theory that only having 8 months between pregnancies and still BFing may mean less of a hormonal surge than last time. I was wondering if any of you could support my theory with further ancedotal evidence.

tracingpaper DS's birthday is end of April so I'm also giving it until May, although despite having increased his formula uptake dramatically in the last month he still seems as keen as ever to BF, so not sure how I'll make the break.

Kveta · 03/02/2012 21:42

hi, think i posted here a while back! 22+3 now, DS 2.4 and still feeding once a day. nipples are excruciating, but 1 feed a day is ok! have been back at work since he was 7 months and no issues with feeding, just knackered all the time. Keep saying it will pass, but no sign of him ever bloody sleeping yet!

hope all of you in 1st trimester are ok, it does get better remember! I'm only feeling sick once a day now! :o

also, the Adventures in Tandem Nursing book is worth a read if you haven't seen it already!

TruthSweet · 03/02/2012 23:24

Hi all,

I am back in the bfing while pg boat. Only 6wk but I'm tandem nursing DD2 & DD3!! This will be the 2nd pg I have tandem nursed through, I bf DD1 & DD2 during DD3's pg until DD1 self weaned at 8m pg - she was 3.6y.

No drop in supply yet (normally 14w for me) but the DDs are a lot older with this pg than with previous ones (usually youngest is 12-13m but youngest is 2.3y)

crochetcircle · 04/02/2012 01:18

Hi all
Welcome back/welcome to the thread.
I'm on my phone and can't keep everyone's details in my head, but wanted to mention that I'd been to a bf clinic today to discuss my worries - specifically having a drop in supply whilst DD is still nutritionally dependent on milk (DD 7 months, me 11 weeks pregnant). I haven't noticed any difference yet. The counsellor advised that as long as I continue to feed she didn't think there would be an issue. She thought supply might dip if you had an older child, but not such a young baby. She did mention changes in the taste of the milk however so I suppose that might affect how she feeds.

Does that scan against advice you've been given, or your experience if you are bf'ing whilst pregnant?

She gave me a book to read. Something that stuck out is the 'antsy' feeling I hit whilst she was feeding in the first few weeks. Like you just want the feed to be over, inexplicably. It's stopped now, but wondered if anyone else had had it?

Nipple update is that they are a little tender again, but it's still very manageable, as long as she doesn't nip!

When I'm on the computer I'll say hi to you all properly, just wanted to check-in.

TruthSweet · 04/02/2012 12:03

Unfortunately it doesn't matter how old baby is, as the switching off of bm production is hormone driven and how those hormones affect each woman varies.

Personally I stop making milk at 14w pg and in my 2nd pg my colostrum came in at 24w and with my 3rd 26w (DD1 & DD2 had a 2w nursing strike that ended the day my colostrum came in). Mine were happy to dry-nurse during pg (the strike happened after we came home from a holiday). When my supply tanked with my 2nd pg DD1 was about 15m and nursing about 10-12 times a day so she was still bfing a lot (eating a lot too!).

I have heard of women with no dip in supply at all, women who had slightly lowered supply, women who only got colostrum in very late in pg (~36w IIRC) so it is a bit pot luck what happens.

The only thing is if you have a baby under 12m and your supply drops drastically you would need to add in an alternative milk source be it formula or donor milk. A slight dip in supply would possibly be manageable with adding extra calcium rich foods and upping healthy fat intake.

crochetcircle · 07/02/2012 18:47

Hi truthsweet

Thanks for the information. It's helpful although not what I wanted to hear! All I can do is keep an eye on her I guess and look for signs that things are changing. She is weaning onto solids so it's possible [optimistic emoticon] that will coincide with any drop in supply. I feel quite emotional about it some days.

My scan is on Friday. Fingers crossed, I'm really hoping everything's ok in there.

How's everyone else doing?

RedKites · 07/02/2012 22:51

Hi all,

Can I join you? I think I'm 5 or so weeks pregnant with DC2 and I'm breastfeeding DS who is 18mo. I think my supply is dropping already, which I'm finding more emotional than I expected. DS will drink cow's milk happily enough, but am not sure how much I should be offering it to him, or if that will accelerate the reduction in supply.

EauRouge · 08/02/2012 10:17

Hi RedKites (I've had a couple of those circling over my house this morning), congrats on your pregnancy! Supply varies between mothers, some have no issues and some find that their supply drops during pregnancy. What is it that makes you t...

ThePicKvickPapers · 08/02/2012 10:20

ooh, congratulations TruthSweet you're brave to have DC4! good luck with scans ladies - I ended up having loads with this DC as she has been mighty awkward in her positioning! But all is good so far (23+1 today, eep!).

hope none of you are having bad morning sickness, I was pretty awful with it in the early weeks, and some days just lay on the sofa breathing as shallowly as possible whilst DS watched Pingu.

DS is still v. keen on his morning feed, but it is painful for me, so not sure I can hack another 4 months of it. We shall see.

RedKites we got DS onto a cup of cows milk every morning a few months ago - he wasn't keen initially, but now will sometimes ask for it. I am quite glad he willingly drinks it though, as there are some days I just cannot bfeed him, so having an alternative available is great. Hope your supply is ok, and just regulating itself - mine didn't drop until 12-14 weeks or so (think I met TruthSweet at 13 weeks and we discussed it actually, so maybe it was after that?)

(oh, 'tis Kveta here btw, have namechanged for the dickens thing.)

EauRouge · 08/02/2012 10:26

Bloody hell, I missed Truthsweet's post! Congrats, Truth Grin

TruthSweet · 08/02/2012 10:50

Thanks Eau - I'm 7wks now!!!!

My MS is only bad if I eat - so I don't eat. I have lost 3/4 of a stone so far (in the last 1 1/2 wks) but that's okay as I have a LOT of 'cushioning' before I'm underweight! Oh and I can only drink Fanta orange I just can't bring myself to drink anything else, and even with the Fanta I am only drinking 1l a day. I get weird during PG. Luckily Tesco have a 2 for £2 on 2l bottles (normally £2.06 each Confused) so we aren't being driven to the poorhouse yet Grin

DC4 was a surprise baby - no idea until the Dr suggested insisted on me coming to see her in 20 mins as she was worried I hadn't stopped bleeding from a LLETZ procedure in the beg. Oct. I did a test at home 'just to be absolutely sure when I saw her' but I got 2 lines immediately!! I just gibbered at the GP for about 10mins in shock.

Still all happy now just need to get a massive car for all the children which is an expense we can't afford really but I am not strapping the baby to the roof rack!

thefurryone · 08/02/2012 11:08

Hi congratulations truthsweet & redkite and good luck with the scan crochetcircle

truthsweet I also go mad for the fizzy orange stuff in pregnancy, last time round with my PFB I made myself have proper orange juice mixed with soda most of the time, this time I'm straight onto the hardcore sugary stuff Grin.

I can't work out if my supply is dropping or not, but DS still seems as keen to BF as ever and appears to be trying to drop off his formula intake, but his food intake has increased quite dramatically in the last month, so probably only to be expected. In some ways this is very frustrating as I'm finding BFing quite exhausting, particularly at 3am. Half of me is just so tempted to just give up Sad.

RedKites · 08/02/2012 16:30

Hi all,

Thanks and congratulations to everyone else too. Am slightly Blush to admit I have already ordered that book... though haven't even got round to making an appointment with the GP yet.

Having read a bit more, and had a better night's sleep last night, it may be a letdown issue rather than a supply one. I'm not sure. DS is having very many sides at his bedtime feed (6 last night and 8 the one before, when normally 2, occasionally 4, but always an even number as we must end on a particular side). He's also not the world's best sleeper, but will generally feed back to sleep, but that wasn't working the night before last (although did last night). But then he might just be coming down with yet another cold. I guess I just have to wait and see....

crochetcircle · 12/02/2012 11:55

Hi all

Scan went well, just one healthy baba in there (thankfully! Was dreaming of triplets the night before!). Now to get on with enjoying the pregnancy and feeling well again.

DD is feeding really well again. She's had a bad cold the past week or so and I realise now that it was that which was making her fussy and shortening her feeds, not my supply wobbling. Now her nose is clear and her appetite has returned she is feeding normally again.

TheRealMBJ · 12/02/2012 15:35

Wow!!! This is still going? Grin

Congratulations every one. I will go and catch up on everyone's news, but a special congrats to TruthSweet Wink. You guys are lucky to have an expert on the thread.

TruthSweet · 12/02/2012 15:48

Not an expert more of a battle scarred veteran! I still can't believe this is my 3rd pg I have nursed through Shock In a few weeks I'll have clocked up 6 YEARS of bfing

TheRealMBJ · 12/02/2012 16:35

BF through 3 pregnancies and tandeming through 2 of them is most certain an expert in my book Wink

AngelDog · 14/02/2012 21:24

Just jumping in to say a big Congratulations to TruthSweet. Grin

I'm not eligible to join the thread yet - but I'm hopeful I might join you eventually. :)

TruthSweet · 15/02/2012 08:25

Tell you what AD - don't have sex because you have had a gynae op, take precautions when on the very rare chance you do (like 3 times in 4 months) and not take the folic acid you HAVE to take to prevent malformations of the fetus (because you aren't TTC so why would you) easiest conception I have ever had! Frightening really DH and I are going to have to never be in the same room after baby arrives or we will have baby no.5 on the way!

I really hope you get lucky soon Angel so fingers crossed (but not legs Wink)
