Hi all

I'm being admitted to hospital for a few weeks and was looking for some books to take with me.

Nothing sad. I like stuff like "this is going to hurt" or a guilty pleasure something naughty and dramatic.

Any recommendations please x

Totally second The Push and Last thing to Burn.

I also loved Last One at The Party.

And The Housewarming was unexpectedly brilliant. Still think about it now.

Shelley Parker-Chan: She who became the Sun

Also thumb up for American Dirt.

I’m reading Babel at the minute and really enjoying that too.

ChrisPriss · 17/03/2024 17:41

Anything by John Marrs is gripping

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 17/03/2024 17:46

Trespasses by Louise Kennedy

Lessons in chemistry by Bonnie Garman

Norma by Sofi Oksanen

America is good, but long, and about people trying to enter America from Mexico, on The Beast, a train. It’s quite heavy in places.

i’d go for something like Jilky Cooper, J cake Collins , something lighter (and fun).

TravellingIncognito · 17/03/2024 18:06

If you haven't read it already - Apple Tree yard by Louise Doughty

ChocolateRebellion · 17/03/2024 18:26

I'm currently on page 1017 of Ken Follett's 'The Pillars of the Earth'
I was a bit put off initially by how long it is, but it's very readable and very interesting. I'm flying through it.

stayathomer · 17/03/2024 18:29

If you like Gone Girl or Gitl on a train then anything by Gillian McAllister, Kathryn Croft or Jo Spain

ArcticBells · 17/03/2024 19:09

Fingersmith has been recommended on so many threads that I've finally ordered it despite not knowing much about it! Grin

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 17/03/2024 19:49

Excellent!

Caravaggiouch · 17/03/2024 20:03

I’ve read a few Louise Candlish books in one sitting because I was hooked - The Swimming Pool, The Other Passenger, Those People.

Also Apple Tree Yard.

Apple Tree Yard

I really love the cormorant strike books by JK Rowling, honestly think they get better the further in you get!

swedex · 17/03/2024 20:11

Weyward by Emilia hart

clpsmum · 17/03/2024 20:23

I'm reading the count of monte cristo and absolutely loving it. It's amazing!

Also really enjoyed the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo and another called Elinor oliphant.

Good luck in hospital xx

Both by Will Dean,

The Last Passenger, and
The Last Thing to Burn

Omg just read the last thing to burn 😱

BarryKentPoet · 17/03/2024 20:25

Daisy Darker. Even though I saw the twist coming from near the beginning, there were still enough shocks to keep me enthralled.

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

This is brilliant

I've wanted to read this for ages but always been so intimidated by how long it is. You've made me want to give it a go!

Eye for an Eye - M J Arlidge

'Emily' is a devoted single mother. 'Jack' starts a new job in a new town. They both share the same secret: neither of them are who they say they are.

They are among only nine criminals in the UK who have been granted lifelong anonymity, for their own safety, because of their terrible crimes.

But what if someone exposed their true identities to the families of their victims, who are desperate for revenge?

I made the foolish error of starting this one night at 10pm in bed... I had to put it down at 2.30am as I had to get up in 4 hours.

Totally agree, love them

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 17/03/2024 20:42

For naughty and dramatic, I'd recommend Lucky by Jackie Collins.

I think it's her best book. It's the only book that's ever fallen out of my hands from the shock of a plot twist.

It's long, epic, and pretty easy to read as well.

Wishingiwastracytutor · 17/03/2024 20:45

I have to say wool by Hugh howey for a dystopian read

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 17/03/2024 20:55

Agree with lots of the recommendations so far....
Big little lies
American dirt
Lessons in chemistry
Yellow face
The teacher
The Thursday murder club would be light and easy reading if you are recovering.

Hope all goes well
