Hi all

I'm being admitted to hospital for a few weeks and was looking for some books to take with me.

Nothing sad. I like stuff like "this is going to hurt" or a guilty pleasure something naughty and dramatic.

Any recommendations please x

Would agree that Fingersmith has a gasp out loud twist. If it's nothing to do with pregnancy, I'd recommend The Push highly - but not to be read when vulnerable ante or post partum.

I'm reading Big Little Lies by Lianne Moriarty. I have no idea what's going to happen to who but in a good way.
Not in a confused way whereby I think I've not read properly!

It's got me gripped anyway. I like her books.

Good luck btw x

Most of the Lianne Moriaty books are great!

Lessons in chemistry

Oh god - I hated this. It’s so subjective what others might like isn’t it?
The last thing that was a real page turner for me was The Puppet Show by MW Craven.

JuneFromBethesda · 17/03/2024 15:18

I hated Lessons in Chemistry too @Gladespade 😄 The whimsical talking dog finished me off.

The last proper page-turner I read was I Am Pilgrim (which I picked up from a recommendation on another Mumsnet thread!). I’m very hard to please with books these days but this one kept me hooked.

Not a book recommendation but a recommendation of audio books (I use audible). If you're in hospital you may not feel up to actually reading and an audio book might pass the time but without the same level of concentration required or effort. Anyway, hope your recovery is quick and smooth!

Into the Darkest Corner. A real page turner, very tense.

I second this. Excellent book.

Good idea @urrrgh46

There’s a brilliant audio adaptation of Jaws available on BBC Sounds - it’s compelling listening.

m00rfarm · 17/03/2024 15:41

I loved the Shardlake series by C J Sanson. I have just finished the last one, and am gutted that there are no more! The last one was just brilliant.

PossumintheHouse · 17/03/2024 15:42

If you like darker stuff (not not sad) - Animal by Lisa Taddeo, The Vegetarian by Han Kang and How to Kill your Family by Bella Mackie.

The trouble with audio books when you are sleeping a lot is that you drop off, miss a bit, wake up again, then drop off and it is impossible to work out where you got to.

urrrgh46 · 17/03/2024 15:48

@m00rfarm audible has a timer function. I set it to 5 mins if I'm tired.

I'm thoroughly enjoying The Trial by Rob Rinder atm.

EasternStandard · 17/03/2024 16:29

Loved ‘Alive’

Read it in about a week

useitorlose · 17/03/2024 16:31

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

ImpishOrAdmirable · 17/03/2024 16:34

The Bean Trees and Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver.

I loved American Dirt but did find it a bit sad myself.

When you've finished reading it, watch the tv series of it. I love it!!!

suburburban · 17/03/2024 16:58

I'm reading Home Coming by Kate Moreton , nearly finished.

It is her latest novel but all her books have been very good

Behind Closed Doors by B A Paris is very gripping! Also quite scary. I read it in 2 sittings, felt like it was impossible to put it down!

I came to recommend the fantastic Behind Closed Doors, in fact I have been listening to it this afternoon for the umpteenth time!

Iamblossom · 17/03/2024 17:19

The Girl with a dragon tattoo was an awesome trilogy. I remember reading one of them on the train, a fight scene, and gasping audibly I was so gripped.

Twiglets1 · 17/03/2024 17:19

I loved the book Affinity by the same author as Fingersmith - both cracking stories!
