Boarding school with separate 6th form House/accommodation….does one exist??

Our year 11 DD wants to move school for 6th form, but doesn’t want to move to a different school that has typical boarding houses where there would be younger students and only a dozen kids from her year. Are there ANY schools where 6th formers live together in 6th form specific houses for both lower and upper sixth (years 12 and 13)? Can be anywhere in UK. We live in a part of Scotland where no where is commutable so she’s used to travelling! She’s fairly bright, not sporty, wants to be treated as an adult, and is fairly sick of petty rules.
TIA

Canford do for U6th but not L6.

Ohplesandbanonos · 16/10/2025 20:38

Stonyhurst have separate boarding for sixth form - and commutable from Scotland down the m6.

TeenToTwenties · 16/10/2025 20:40

Wycombe Abbey has separate for upper 6th (Clarence), but lower 6th are in the main houses.

Yes - Uppingham. Sixth Form, The Lodge. For year 12 and year 13. I don't think it is the boon your daughter thinks. I understand her logic but it can also make integrating quite tricky. But there are so many new pupils in sixth form at Uppingham (think numbering 50 before VAT) that it will be fine. Quite a few scots go.

St Peter’s York

Next door to Uppingham, Oakham also has 6th form boarding houses.

In Scotland Gordonstoun has a separate house for 6th form but I’m not sure if that is just for boys.

This is miles from you (Somerset) but it's an excellent state 6th form college with boarding. There are no petty rules and the students are treated very much like adults. Huish Boarding - Richard Huish College https://share.google/QSw6RjoSw31YsqtMP

Oakham I dont think it is lower and upper sixth is it - think only upper sixth? Don't really know Oakham to this level of detail however... I went to a school down the road and went once for a match aha.

Uppingham is def lower and upper sixth. I think it will suit your profile of DD too.

You could look at Atlantic college in Wales which is 6th form only. bac.

Roedean, Benenden (girls) and Sevenoaks (mixed) do - long way from you but she could fly to Gatwick/Heathrow. Heathfield does too (Heathrow is closest) but it's not especially academic.

or you could also look at tutorial colleges (aka crammers) likes DLD in London - lots of people use them just as boarding sixth forms rather than for retakes, DLD is somewhat eye watering for fees though, given the limited facilities

easternenergizer · 16/10/2025 21:00

Roedean and Benenden are good schools and cuts above the others mentioned if you don't mind the travel. Ditto Sevenoaks which is cosmopolitan but fewer boarders.

CrabbyCat · 16/10/2025 21:03

The Leys Cambridge has a couple of 6th form only houses. It's a few years ago now, but I had a friend who moved their for 6th form and who was very happy there.

Bromsgrove has a sixth form only house (Housman) situated just off the main campus as well as houses which cater for 13-18 year olds. It’s popular with sixth formers new to the school.

shuggiebain · 16/10/2025 21:09

Here in Surrey (convenient for Heathrow and Gatwick), St Catherine’s, Bramley has a sixth form only boarding house. There’s also the uber-expensive Hurtwood House which is 6th form only.

Wallywobbles · 16/10/2025 21:09

Wycombe Abbey. But only for U6.

easternenergizer · 16/10/2025 21:12

Hurtwood house is a vibe too have a few friends from it.

Wycombe Abbey is good but very by the book. Won't throw up any suprises (good and bad). Will need to be comfortable in intellectual environments and naturally smart.

I know of one if you pm me x

What grades for GCSE is she predicted?

bitterexwife · 16/10/2025 21:21

Peter symonds college, Winchester

Elpheba · 16/10/2025 21:22

Another one for The Leys in Cambridge. Two of the girls houses are all through and one is sixth form only (Granta House). City location means more steps towards independence/uni style of living in my opinion compared to when very rural.

Mommybunny · 16/10/2025 21:24

St Catherine’s Bramley (Guildford) has a fairly new sixth form only boarding house, and there are plenty of girls who just go for 6th form.

dormsy · 16/10/2025 21:26

Cheltenham Ladies’ has sixth form houses ( or at least in did in 1987- think it still does..)

Rainbow1901 · 16/10/2025 21:33

Bedales School might work for her.
