Boarding school with separate 6th form House/accommodation….does one exist??

Our year 11 DD wants to move school for 6th form, but doesn’t want to move to a different school that has typical boarding houses where there would be younger students and only a dozen kids from her year. Are there ANY schools where 6th formers live together in 6th form specific houses for both lower and upper sixth (years 12 and 13)? Can be anywhere in UK. We live in a part of Scotland where no where is commutable so she’s used to travelling! She’s fairly bright, not sporty, wants to be treated as an adult, and is fairly sick of petty rules.
TIA

I went to uppingham as parents were abroad so couldn’t get out at weekendsand it was one of the strictest with leave. Honestly, for the money it wasn’t super great. Really great extracurriculars, sport, theatre and music. Terrible internal politics, headmaster was terrible, academic results in general were poor. I was going for oxbridge so was treated way better as well - they had things like wine tasting lessons just for oxbridge and prefects, special two week trip just for oxbridge etc etc. results in my year were generally poor though and most people ended up somewhere like Oxford Brookes.

also start at l6 and put in for a sixth form house as preference but got put into a mixed one so it’s not guaranteed.

Lorne house is no longer a boarding house for boys 13-18 but now 11-13 day house.

Someone said on here that they opening up a lower section so I checked and saw it. They have a day house too now.

I heard this too but also theres like 50 newcomers at 6th form thats enough of a new influx to dilute no/

Eekkk - when did you leave roughly? Personally this is a sentiment I have heard before of it...

There’s a lot of local bad feeling about the demise of Maidwell Hall and Uppingham’s part in it.

OP: DD joined Bootham School in York at sixth form. There is only one girls boarding house but the sixth form have their own flats within the boarding house and there is a sixth form common room for boarding/day girls & boys. DD did not mix with the younger kids at all TBH.

Bootham is more relaxed about the “petty” rules so no uniform, everyone treated equally with respect, DD could sign out and go to the pub once she had suitable ID - she thrived and achieved great A level results.

Hartpury don't have any younger students than 6th form.

tachetastic · 17/10/2025 09:28

Blundell’s and West Buckland in Devon both have sixth form only houses

bubbleandbubble · 17/10/2025 09:33

King’s Ely has separate houses for sixth form, for both boys and girls, as well as a separate sixth form centre for study, meals, common rooms etc for day and boarding pupils. It’s right in the middle of town so they can go for coffee etc in their free periods, or jump on the train to Cambridge or London at the weekend

northernerinsomerset · 17/10/2025 10:01

Millfield in Somerset do it.

greglet · 17/10/2025 10:07

King’s Canterbury have an all-girls’ sixth form boarding house called Bailey. It tends to attract a lot of international pupils, particularly from China, which might have an impact on the house culture/vibe, though.

Lancaster Girls Grammar is non boarding. Only an option at the boys school.

Lancaster Royal grammar as I referred to is a boys school 11-16, but does have a co-ed sixth form with a separate boarding house for sixth form girls.

Blundells, Devon. Great school. Went there many moons ago :)

Rugby School has Stanley House for lower and upper sixth form girls only. They take approx. 25 girls into this house each year. Rugby train takes 1hr30mins into London Euston station. Whilst the sport is great at Rugby less sporty teens are welcome too (our DD) and can find more individual sports or just go to the gym which our DD enjoyed. It’s an excellent school academically and pastorally. They dine in their boarding houses and each have beautiful gardens where they dine in if the weather is good.

Sounds like Rugby is a good bet honestly and it's a good school too for your requirements! Not sure where you are in scotland but it's on the glasgow line direct. Just don't expect a beautiful quaint town, it's a pretty standard midlands town but I don't think any Rugbeians care.

Londonnight · 18/10/2025 11:13

Abbotsholme in Staffordshire have totally separate houses for 6th form

Nuala4 · 18/10/2025 12:03

Agree Rugby town is a bit of a grimy midlands post industrial town however the students love having it all on their doorstep. They have an area they are allowed to go to which includes decent burger, Italian, pizza, Japanese and English restaurants. They have some great coffee shops too and the teens love all the charity shops. There is a large ASDA where they buy food (the houses have kitchens for the students to cook in) and also bedding, etc to personalise their rooms. It also means they can get out of school grounds for afternoons on the weekends and when they have an out (free period in upper school). XX (as 6th form is called) can go in groups to designated pubs on Saturday night once they turn 18. It’s a good mix of campus life with town you can walk into in 2 mins. Yes, train line goes up to Scotland too plenty of Scottish students there and a good cohort go to Edinburgh and St. Andrew’s universities.

I dropped a friend off at the train station. It's kind of a mini-London. It works. Good prep for life. Uppingham is less easy to get to. Train to Peterborough and 30 mins in the car. But you should visit both they aren't far from each other. Could do it in 2 days, one day each.

Boggyjo · 18/10/2025 19:03

DoYRMS has a sixth form house. It would be a long treck from Scotland, but the fees are a tiny proportion of most of the schools mentioned here.
Very much worth a look. Do not think inexpensive means it is not wonderful.

Bigfatsquirrel · 29/10/2025 16:11

Cheltenham Ladies College has separate 6th form houses

I went to Ellesmere College and sixth form girls all boarded in St. Oswald's House, it was separate from younger years.

MiddleAgedDread · 29/10/2025 16:40

That's the name of the place @HairyToity !! I stayed there for a summer camp donkey's years ago and was sure we'd stayed in the 6th form boarding house but couldn't for the life of me remember what the school was called.

Fasterthan40 · 29/10/2025 16:44

Shiplake near Henley has a sixth form block

mamagogo1 · 29/10/2025 17:13

There are 6th form only schools with boarding. The one my dd attended closed a couple of years ago but there are others. They are expected to look after themselves mostly

RatherBeOnVacation · 31/10/2025 12:40

Stowe has a sixth form house just for new joiner girls. It’s mixed upper and lower and is very nice (modern and welcoming with en-suites). Set up a lot like university.

Other schools with houses for new sixth form joiners are Rugby and Uppingham.
