Boarding school with separate 6th form House/accommodation….does one exist??

Our year 11 DD wants to move school for 6th form, but doesn’t want to move to a different school that has typical boarding houses where there would be younger students and only a dozen kids from her year. Are there ANY schools where 6th formers live together in 6th form specific houses for both lower and upper sixth (years 12 and 13)? Can be anywhere in UK. We live in a part of Scotland where no where is commutable so she’s used to travelling! She’s fairly bright, not sporty, wants to be treated as an adult, and is fairly sick of petty rules.
TIA

Stonyhurst have separate boarding for sixth form - and commutable from Scotland down the m6.

Think it might be a bit too religious for DD

What kind of school are you looking for? Where are they currently?

I believe Lancaster royal grammar has a co ed sixth form & a girls only boarding house.

Also Moreton Hall has a sixth form boarding house. It’s a lovely girls boarding school in Shropshire. As it’s relatively small, they are a little more relaxed. As with several other schools, sixth formers run their own societies and enterprise etc…

couple of 8s, couple of 5s, rest 6s or 7s

Ok so scratch Benenden, Roedean, Cheltenham Ladies and Wycombe. I don't think she'd get in.

For this profile of student I would aim for:

  • Uppingham (full Boarding and day)
  • Rugby too. (Full boarding and day)
  • The Leys (Mixture of weekly full and day).

The first two are better options for boarding as many more full boarders. Uppingham just returned a very poor ISC report however. Rugby seems to be doing v well at the moment. Maybe some Mothers from these right now can give some more insight.

Good luck.

Looking for coed where 6th formers are treated as young adults and given some trust. Inspiring teachers and good careers advice, without petty rules.

Think you should look at Rugby then. The town situation also just makes it feel like real life and less institutionalised.

St Swithuns, Winchester

Lovely school in a stunning area and has had a separate sixth form boarding house since I was old enough to go there! Windermere School (St Anne's that was).

https://www.windermereschool.co.uk/sixth-form/sixth-form-boarding/

Edited because despite going to school there I misspelt Windermere..

BathTangle · 16/10/2025 22:06

D'Overbroeck's, Oxford. 6th form students have separate houses as far as I can tell. International intake, co-ed. Supportive environment but pupils treated as individuals. You have a Direcor of Studies rather than a form. Massive range of subjects offered and wide academic abilities accepted.

LargeChestofDrawers · 16/10/2025 22:17

St Swithun's, but only U6.

mismomary · 16/10/2025 22:59

Windermere have separate block for sixth form accommodation.

similarminimer · 16/10/2025 23:12

Ardingley I think

Lancaster Girls Grammar is non boarding. Only an option at the boys school.

Atlantic College in South Wales is just 16-19 and is a highly regarded international college. Lots of opportunities there and great sports too.

Surely most if not all boarding schools have accomodation for 6th formers that is seperate from the main school?

I don't know if I have missed the point here, but every school we have looked around has study areas for 6th formers, boarding for 6th formers, special privileges for 6th formers. Do some schools make them stay in the houses with the year 7-11's?

Bigbus · 17/10/2025 08:43

My daughter went to Hurtwood House - the whole school is sixth form only and I think this makes a big difference. It definitely feels like they treat the kids more like young adults and it has a much less schooly feeling but still keeps an eye on them. I would recommend it.

Oakham only has the separate house for U6 (Form 7/yr13) but the middle school houses are for ages 13-17/18 so there won’t to be too many little ones running around. The girls who arrive in sixth form settle in well, though, and the U6 house means that the girls are working and living with the day girls as well so there are even more opportunities to make friends.

No, I don’t work at the school but DS has just been through there and made lots of friends with both girls and boys who joined the school at sixth form.

Peterborough station is only 40 minutes away so very handy for LNER east coast trains.

She wants a genuine separate house which is quite rare. Not a separate area. Most have boarding houses which are only 13-18.

Yes but surely Uppingham is better suited as it has exactly what the poster is looking for (sixth form boarding house) and has a lot more full-boarders so is better suited to someone who needs full-boarding (from Scotland). Having said that Uppingham has just had a lot of changes and wonder what is going on there. Closing boarding houses, poor ISI report, increasing day pupils... Perhaps maybe Rugby better...

Hurtwood is a vibe but in Surrey if that isn't an issue.

I've read some more of the thread and actually we've looked at a fair few of these mentioned, so I think I just have missed any that don't have a separate house. I had no idea it was rare! Seems like an odd thing to miss out on to attracts kids for A' Levels.

Spill the tea on Uppingham! Which houses are closing? That is sad to hear, though. We looked at Uppingham and I was very impressed, but that was 9 years ago.

From what I’ve heard (and a friend went there for sixth form) the newbies stick together for sixth form and don’t seem to mix as much with the kids from the other houses.
