Yes. Can't wait!

Wordless · 02/06/2024 11:24

Ha! Two words - and one of them is Abbott. I don’t see the Labour Party being specifically helpful to my particular ‘identity’.

As a human and a British citizen - nothing could have been worse than what the Tories have done to this country, so I’d welcome any change that brings even a smidgen more empathy to the government.

I'm brown and no.

The Labour party, in the way they have treated Diane Abbott and Faiza Shaheen and others, makes me think they won't be any better. They are just better at pretending to give a damn.
Have you seen how one of their faves said Jewish people are politically black and nothing has happened to him? In fact he has been chosen to run for a safe seat in Durham. Imagine if he had said something similar the other way round?
Rather have a wolf than a wolf in sheep's clothing.

MissUnicorn · 02/06/2024 20:15

Not at all. I feel politically homeless right now. If we didn't have a 2 party system, I wouldn't be voting Labour, but I will.

Reugny · 02/06/2024 20:21

What do you think will be better?

Labour always run the NHS better.

In regards to other things as they have purged most of their left MPs, unlike Tony Blair's government who had people like Gordon Brown in it, I don't see them having any policies that attempt tackle social inequality particularly far sighted ones e.g. Sure Start.

Reugny · 02/06/2024 20:22

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 02/06/2024 14:55

Will there be more empathy?

No as the Tories will still have some of their lunatic fringe MPs around in opposition.

changefromhr · 03/06/2024 07:45

From Nesrine Malik in the Guardian today:

"In a system without proportional representation, politics is indeed often the choice of the lesser of two evils. But as the space between the two shrinks, people might begin to feel that – as Ralph Nader once said – “if you always vote for the lesser of two evils, you will always have evil, and you will always have less”.

Starterlocs · 03/06/2024 12:12

The conservatives have overseen an incredible decrease in living standards. I can only hope that another party will resolve this, as more of the same isn't doing it for us.

V v little to do with race.

Poverty disproportionally affects ethnic people though. I am looking but I just don't see any party saying anything that gives me confidence that they will resolve things. The only thing has made me smile is my youngest asking me if I going to vote Reform.

No not at all! I won’t be voting for labour. Gone are the days where you vote labour because you’re black. I think there’s genuinely a problem nationwide and that won’t be fixed with a change of government.

This! This is why I don't want to vote Labour. Lesser of two evils means I'm still voting for evil. However, the very real fact of today's voting system is that not voting for Labour is essentially voting for Tories.
It will be interesting to see if they make changes to the voting system because they were trying to do so.
@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting I actually googled what Socrates said based on your username.... He surely was right. Bless your youngest; that is the only thing that has made me smile about this election, too.

DeeCeeCherry · 03/06/2024 22:44

I want rid of the Tories, but no not especially excited. I can't bring myself to vote for Labour aka Tory-lite, after the Diane Abbott debacle. Decades of racism and extreme threats and they did nothing - it shows they see anti-Black racism as being fine. As clumsily worded as her letter was I knew what she was trying to say, but many people twisted it to suit their own narrative. She isnt allowed to make a single mistake, as a Black Woman. Dawn Butler was threatened with being shot in the back of the head and they didn't support her either. Faiza Shaheen is being hung out to dry. Labour do not like Black and Brown Women so why would I vote for them? I cant understand why any Black Woman would, to be honest. You hate me, but here's my vote...

Voting should be about one's own integrity, I think. Anyway I'll have to think hard on who to vote for

Starseeking · 04/06/2024 00:34

For the second time in my voting life, I may not vote at all. The first time was the recent mayoral election.

All parties seem as bad as each other, however I abhor the way Labour has treated Diane Abbott. As a Black woman myself, I can't co-sign that.

I understood the sentiment what Diane Abbot was trying to say. The being Black vs Jewish discussion is one of those that I only have with close friends who are either Jewish, Black, Brown or Allies.

Both women not being able to stand whilst a white male can make such a disgusting comments are one of the reasons Labour are no better than the conservatives.

@changefromhr That pretty much sums it up. I think we go from lesser evil to lesser evil. At one point I thought the Lib Dems might offer a solution, but no. We are never going to get the government the country deserves whilst things remain as they are. Although I feel that proportional representation is still the same lesser evil voting system in a system where long term planning is non existent.

@Reugny Genuine question not a challenge. Do you think that Labour ran it better or did they have less pressure to contend with due to the age profile of the population then or being pre coved.

@DM29 I agree. I feel I am in a difficult position, I don't believe in not voting as a protest. @Starseeking Non voters have effectively voted for whoever gets into power.

It's the nationwide problem that concerns me most. There is less empathy and more entitlement.

@MissUnicorn Socrates makes a lot of sense on democracy. The flaw in his argument is the character of the available political leaders.

And what happened after the Forde report? Has there been any investigation into the racism directed against her by members of her own party?

Reugny · 04/06/2024 10:13

They put more money into public services by design e.g. state school spending per child and sometimes by accident e.g. GPs contract.

Absolutely, I don’t plan on not voting. I just won’t be voting labour. I am voting by policies and the one they have regarding schools is not beneficial to me. So, I’ll be going to the other way.
