It is a bit quiet. I don't really have much to say at the moment. Last night I went to bed at 9.30pm. Today I nearly threw up in the shower.

Was meant to have my first midwife appointment on Thursday but I cancelled it as I have too much work to do and am off tomorrow for my birfday. So it'll be next week instead, after my 8 week scan (which I am Not Thinking About).

I have also decided one of the women I work with is also newly diffed. Based on her looking a bit rough coming out of the loos this morning and the packet of Ritz crackers that have suddenly appeared on her desk. I look forward to seeing if my detective skills are any good.

rollerbaby · 13/07/2010 11:28

Ha ha cheesy biscuits = a giveaway!!

At least no clearing up with vomming in the shower... I made my husbo bring me toast in bed at least 10 minutes before I got up. really does help. You don't want an empty tummy at any point of the day - rapid detoriation follows.

Babymoo not so active daytime this week. Compared to the karate kicks last week. I wish he would - do these things go in spurts I wonder?

Muser · 13/07/2010 11:33

The one day I actually threw up I ate straight away, it bodes ill for me. Today I threw up but there was nothing there inside me. So it was all a bit painful. At least I made it out of the shower.

Anyway. Tomorrow is my day off and the lovely spa I'm going to have very kindly swapped my free mud steam room treatment for a pregnancy friendly pedicure. Hooray!

rollerbaby · 13/07/2010 12:24

ooh nice. Enjoy o' sickly bird. My feet look like hooves.

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 13/07/2010 13:04

Contributing to quietness. Was off sick yesterday - cumulative lack of sleep then the final straw of very little sleep Sun eve. Felt like a wimp calling in for that but really do feel much better today...good thing too since now have a task to complete in 3 days which usually takes at least a week.

Vits: am still taking Boots own "preggo" ones, seem to have got on well with them (didn't like pregnacare, made me queasier). Had letter from MW saying I need iron as am slightly anaemic so will be off to get some in a mo. Not much else to say for self at present. Went to shops to "make a start" on getting stuff for Clint, came back tired, depressed, overwhelmed and clutching a small bag of really basic items (plain white babygrows, plain white towels, muslins, a blanket) - usually I find shopping quite exciting but not that day! I'm trying to tread a fine line between getting enough clothes for Clint first-off and not getting too many if will receive some as gifts (though believe people often buy 3-6mo). Don't want to spend a fortune but don't want to be underprepared.

And look! - having said I had nothing to say I have clearly waffled on!

Cosmosis · 13/07/2010 13:16

on the suject of baby stuff, will be packing hospital bag this week, how many clothes do you think I should take for Artie? would 3 vests and 3 suits be ok? and how many nappies?

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 13/07/2010 13:21

(I guess it will depend on how long you are in which you can't know beforehand....so I'm thinking it might come down to how easily you can get hold of more should you need them).

laurielou · 13/07/2010 13:32

vag, muse hope you're both feeling a bit better today. In fact I hope you're all feeling better now the weather seems to have cooled down a bit.

muse have a fab time at the spa & Happy Birthday for tomorrow. All the best people are born in July

Pliz to be enjoying some of my carrot cake birthday cake. I also have a packet of Ginger Nut biscuits in case.....

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 13/07/2010 13:58

Hello dear Peshes! . I've been silent too, but then I've been gone aaagges (and missed ya lots), so it's not really down to me. I have done some marathon thread reading to catch up with you all! I've been away for work and then visiting family for the past fortnight and finally got to rest a bit and do some things I hadn't had time for before, like, um, buying some clothes that fit. I'm the bees knees now, don't you know, in my floaty summer tops.

I can't believe all that's happened in the meantime! I am delighted for the new differs and completely bowled over by the beauteous peshlets that have arrived in quick succession. I have been drooling over the divine photos. Massive congratulations obviously - but these have been conveyed elsewhere.

Yikes to tales of puking behind trees, in showers and being too sick for work etc... I escaped all of this for some unknown reason. My heart goes out to you, as it must be vile, but Definitely A Good Sign!
As regards vitamins, I took a multi-vit up to around 12/13 weeks and then my doc told me to stop it, as no longer necessary, so I did. I just try to get a good balance in my diet.

Vag was that brave foray the literal start of buying baby gear (or do you have daunting things like "travel systems" already stashed away?) If so, then hurrah, as I shall conclude that I still have loads of time, clearly! Have nothing at all yet, except a pile of lovely impractical outfits that people gave me while at home...It is time to start planning a bit better - I have been combing ebay and trying to make decisions. There's a scary amount of choice out there... BTW Vag - how many weeks are you now?

Had my 20 wk scan today (actually 22, but who's counting, eh?) and the great news is that everything is looking great! No problems at all and definitely a little girl, who currently weighs around 1 lb and 3 oz. Awww. Scan was lovely. Pictures are crap again. Would have been nice to get a cute one of, say, the baby's upper body, but hey, a nice clear close-up of the baby's spine also has charm, n'est-ce pas? Even if it is unlikely to have strangers oohing and aahhing.

Anyway, delighted to be back and I shall toast you all with a delicious alcohol-free Jupiler, my new beverage. .

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 13/07/2010 14:18

Laurie! Happy Birthday matey - thanks for the carrot cake! (No walnuts, right? I'm allergic) Happy Birthday for tomorrow, Muse!

Switty is back! And is also correct in establishing that the items listed are pretty much all we have got so far - I also already had a changing bag (gift from parents) and pretty cushion with applique'd boats... Oh and some reuseable nappies that I bought in the Bumgenius V3 Discount Frenzy. No furniture or travel items as yet. I'm 30 weeks. Pleeeeenty of time! (Hmm, as I typed that, Clint jabbed me in the ribs - is that a hint?)

Congrats on the little girl Switts! We're a bit boy heavy so far so more girls required! My 20 week scan pics were fairly hopeless too but then we couldn't even see much in the scan. NHS technology for you....!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 13/07/2010 15:51

Vits - I was on Boots own (had a couple of free pregnacare packs from the midwife but have you seen the price of them when you have to pay yourself?

iggypiggy · 13/07/2010 15:54

muse it will be nice if two of you are diffed at same stage at work innit? Hope you are right!

cossie I has packed 3 bodysuit things a couple of vests and 2 sleep suit type things - on the basis that it will be easy to get more if I need to as shop (ie. John Lewis) round corner from hosp... I haz also packed a hand knitted blanket, some booties, a hat and a few muslin squares... Maybe the FESH's will drop in with some actual advice tho

vag I have gone ultra minimalist with the buying of stuff... don't even haz a pram... reckon I can get one easily because we have been offered one by a friend so can have that straight away and the shops only have 1 week ordering time cos I checked with them... Plus the grandmothers are buying many clothes already... I only have a moses basket, a changing mat, a sling, a car seat, some bedding and a few clothes - oh and nappies.... and that is all....

switty congrats on the girl!!!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 13/07/2010 16:03

Cossie I'd also pack booties/socks and scratch mits & hat. If Artie's a little early then you may find his extremities cool down very quickly. Even though it was ridiculously hot here Bear still needed them the first couple of nights.

iggypiggy · 13/07/2010 16:07

ski I know you asked boxy and not me, but I'll answer anyway I thought it was ok as soon as they can hold their head up themselves?

Backinthebox · 13/07/2010 16:09

I think Iggy is right. That's what I would say too, anyway.

VoilaAnotherGimlet · 13/07/2010 16:21

Ooh know what I meant to ask those with experience - changing stations: worth it or is the floor as good? if my Mum tells me one more time "baby cannot fall off the floor" I think I may cry, since other friends have advised floor is stupid idea esp in case of CS, due to number of changes required in tired early days. Advice pls.

CurlyCasperBaggedABairn · 13/07/2010 16:33

ski we are doing tummy time of a fashion already. she lies slightly to the side of on her front, and wriggles around. also likes same position on the baby gym, because it has flashing lights to stare at. All ok as long as supervised.

cos on the hospital clothes front, if you end up staying more than a day, or end up doing any top-up feeding (cup or bottle) you'll need loads! I had to send for stuff a few times because the cup feeds were so messy. I eventually started stripping her naked bar a nappy to feed. But could not do this at the start because, as ski said, you have to keep early babies super warm (hat, fleece, blankets and more). Hospital provided a few nappies, but just to start you off really. Again, I went through LOADS! Had to send out for more - thank goodness for the nappy cake.

Right, feeding rest over, I must return to read-only status for a bit.

CurlyCasperBaggedABairn · 13/07/2010 16:36

back again quicker than expected. changing station, bed, floor: all good! but our changing table with shelves is invaluable storage. it's where all the necessities live, so even if not using it for the actual changes, it's a frequent port of call.

Cosmosis · 13/07/2010 17:15

mits, hat etc already on list ski but ta for pointing out

FannyPriceless · 13/07/2010 17:19

ski Someone once posted a link on Mumsnet to some advice provided by a prem baby team as far as home sterilising. I can't find the link now, but the gist was:
Until 6 months wash carefully in a very specific way (below) or use a dishwasher (ie. giant steriliser).
After 6 months it's free for all with tap water considered fine to drink.

How to wash:
Take apart and rinse bottles asap to get rid of all milk residue
Wash using a dedicated bottle brush in hot water and detergent
Rinse thoroughly with v hot water and shake off excess water
Air dry on a clean paper towel
Do not ever use a tea towel

That is apparently considered the best method according to microbiologists. However, this was one specific PCT and I have since seen advice from others with instructions to use a steriliser. (I would also add - cover to ensure flies can't get to it!)

Obviously don't quote me on any of this - make up your own mind.

As for the head thing. Apparently the cot death rate has dropped dramatically since they started advising for babies to sleep on their back. However, they also gave lots of other advice at the same time so it's not proved as a causal relationship. My niece has a misshapen head. My approach is he sleeps flat on his back, but I try to make sure he alternates which side he turns his head (which my sister says is the mistake she made). I try for tummy time as the default play position. And for short naps in the day when I'm awake I'm relaxed about side sleeping.

We do tummy time already, of sorts. He lies on my lap on a firm pillow facing forward, with his arms and head at the edge. So he can move his head from side to side or lift it up a little bit, but when it comes back down he's still supported without suffocating. I've a photo somewhere of DD doing early tummy time so I'll check how old she was.

vag My changing table = this + this. I find even a little bit of bending / twisting is killing my back. This is the perfect height and the little drawers are really useful. Plus it's multi purpose as it will be his bedroom drawers as he grows up.
PS. Tell your mum you have no intention of leaving him unattended and assume neither does she.

evening all.

honeymolasses would have taken you up on that free book, but my copy has been despatched by Amazon already!

Muser · 13/07/2010 19:03

Oooh, free book. May I have it honeymoo? I still haven't decided what book to buy and this would remove the decision!

Brother-in-law just outed me on Facebook. I was on my mobile panicking "how do I delete? how do I delete?" Am hoping it was on briefly enough and was cryptic enough for nobody to notice. I am not ready for the world to know yet!

Medee · 13/07/2010 19:14

eek!

I was just thnking about the number of friends I have with pictures of babies in their profile, but other than a couple of you lot, most are RL friends or ex-colleagues, so not too supsicious (or at least, easily explainable)
