While we're on the subject of food, how strict where you all about the rules? Nobody has even told me what the rules are. I know ski's views on such things. Just intrigued. Were you more careful in the first 12 weeks?

I am partly asking as I am going out for dinner next weekend to a restaurant that does the best steak tartare in the world. Not sure my body actually wants to eat steak tartare at the moment, but it got me thinking about how strictly people stuck to the guidelines.

CluckyKate · 07/07/2010 16:54

Ooh now there's a question Muse. I stick to the "if your body wants it then you should have it" rule so am still on the runny yolk, rare beef & blue cheese diet....did the same last time round & DD seems to be perfectly normal so far.
Have so far avoided raw fish (although smoked salmon is still on the menu) but haven't really fancied it tbh

Muser · 07/07/2010 17:09

And now I want some Eggs Benedict! With really softly poached eggs. Ohhhhhh.

Have I said hello CluckyKate? If not, hello!

There is no way I'm switching to well done steak. I'd rather not eat steak at all.

iggypiggy · 07/07/2010 17:14

muse you can see bump on the uvverplace if you be my friend

I really did not do savory stuff at all... Just fruit, I think everyone is different, just eat what you feel like eating! And why does toothpaste make you gag?! Is v strange... But that and deodorant made me gag....

I followed the FSA guidelines on the eatwell website re: what to eat. Mainly cos of previous babyfail and being paranoid.. But I have had runny eggs...

Cosmosis · 07/07/2010 17:14

I did stick to the rules more in the 1st 12 weeks ? partly because the idea of a lot of things on the list made me want to vom. I remember going to a café for a coffee and the guy at the table next to me had a baked camembert, which normally would be my idea of heaven. Just one look at it and I had to run to the loo!

The rules I have been following are, caffeine ? this has been easy as TGO is really prone to caffeine reactions so we only ever drink decaff anyway.
Drink, I think in the first 12 weeks I had 2 white wine spritzers ? now I?m having probably one or two drinks a week - but mainly wine or some beer I?ve found which is 2%.
Eggs, I?ve never stopped the runny yolks, I cannot eat a fried or poached egg with a hard yolk, I just can?t!
I?ve had the odd spot of pate and blue cheese and cured hams and stuff, prawn sarnies etc. Just not that often.

SilverSky · 07/07/2010 19:30

MS - I just felt pukey - a lot. I ate through it. Didn't discover any miracle cure other than regular feeds.

Cheese on toast (slabs cheddar not cooked) supposes to be good. I used to go and stand in Sainsburys at lunchtime and literally perve my way round the aisles hunting for food. Sausage rolls, veg samosas, mini cheddars, LARGE bags of crisps and various sweets!

In terms of eating and not eating: gone right off coffee - love the smell just can't drink it, don't want or fancy alcohol even now. I am following the guidelines bit if I have a slip up I don't beat myself up about it. Everyone is different, do what YOU are happy and comfortable with.

ski is we calling Julian Bert now?

For private scans, we went to FMC on Harley St, best money we ever spent. They also do your bloods and give you the results. Marvellous.

Stupid knob of a question - does anyone else find that when they first wake up, bit similar to a hangover realisation, that for the first few moments you forget your preggo?

iggs indeedy do. Surely you should be in the Guiness Book of Records with that momma of a bump ! V v v impressive so it is.

BTW - all my ML has been agreed. Countdown to escaping work and all the shite that goes with it begins!

Anyone else see that photo of Mad Roadrunner Paula Radcliffe running a half marathon or summat whilst 7 mths preggo! Bet she def had to stop for a pee again!

rollerbaby · 07/07/2010 19:39

Well I drank every night the week before I found out I was preggo (at 8 days past ov) which isn't too bad I hope. I genuinely thought nah, no chance this month and hmm guess what. As soon as I found out stopped all booze and then had a first glass of fizz straight after the 12 week scan! It was the best glass of champagne I've ever tasted.

Since then I've probably had a glass or 2 each week. Food wise, I've eaten runny eggs, smoked salmon (although not often), medium/rare (but again, not bleeding) steak and potted crab/prawns. Haven't eaten cold cooked prawns or parma ham etc. Or liver/ or pate (just don't fancy it). Also went right off tea and coffee until after MS passed andd even now won't have that much.

I've avoided all shell fish (except squid) but then I had really really bad oyster or scallop poisoning which nearly finished me off...

I would never eat steak tartare anyway - looks gross!!!!

Hi Clucky welcome to the fred.

I think it's wise being relatively careful in the first 12 weeks and then decide what you think possibly constitutes a risk. Personally with eggs - I didn't think there was a massive risk, but I'm sure people are more careful than me.

rollerbaby · 07/07/2010 19:43

How long have you got Silver? I'm off from 1st October... 12 weeks and counting... CANT WAIT.

SilverSky · 07/07/2010 20:44

I have holiday days owing which I am taking at various points so will be working shorter weeks but as of the last week of September - Freedom!!!!! Come to momma!!! Official ML starts first week of October.

I have soooooooooo much to organise. We are so not prepared.

SALE ALERT : Babies r us - Tommee Tippee starter kit. Inc bottles and steriliser and bottle warmer. Original price £99 currently £49.99! Half Price! Now don't rush out and drain the stocks ! Leave one for me!!!!!

rollerbaby · 07/07/2010 20:52

Do you have a master list? If not, start now cos it will get 3 x fucking longer than your think. I am seriously thinking we will be paupers by November.

SilverSky · 07/07/2010 21:01

We were freaking paupers before we even started! So we are proper shafted ! This baybee is going to have to breast fed til it goes to uni!

Medee · 07/07/2010 21:02

Evening all, repeating myself from BESH thread, but I went ahead with Ovary scan, and really glad I did. Not only are my ovaries clear, but the doctor was able to confirm everything was looking good, and gave me a print out of the 2mm BOC.

I've got my first midwife appointment on the 19th (first they could give me), and I seem to be really hungry in the evenings, but otherwise not much symptom-wise.

SilverSky · 07/07/2010 21:04

Oh and once the little person has been born, clearly I will be living off my fat reserves. That should save on the grocery spends for a few months!

SilverSky · 07/07/2010 21:05

medee that is t'riffic news!

rollerbaby · 07/07/2010 21:13

Woo hoo Medee that is properly brilliant news!!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 08/07/2010 04:57

*silver, your theory is working for me wrt feeding & fat-reserves. I took a couple of weeks holiday in May which I really needed just to recharge my batteries.

medee I am so thrilled for you and another celtic baybee. We just need fair representation from our Welsh contingent now.

Cosmosis · 08/07/2010 08:52

medee yay! are you taking up official Deli residence now then? we need new blood.

iggypiggy · 08/07/2010 09:53

medee yay! That's fab news!

the whole what you are or aren't supposed to eat thing is wierd, which is why I just folowed the government advice FSA pregnancy guidelines. Which definitely says that smoked salmon, salami and hot cooked shellfish are all fine. But is like someone else said, just do what you are comfortable with. I have avoided shellfish like mussels thi cos have been I'll from them more than once, so I avoid, like moo... But have eated lots of prawns

Anyway all of the risks are so small... but I can be a bit paranoid...

Someone explain to me - why when I still have 2 weeks to go are people continually asking me if anything is happening yet?! If I go overdue I'll probably murder one of them!

PollyPoo · 08/07/2010 10:57

Oh yes, I remember that Iggs... phone calls every day asking if I'd had it yet. A) Did they really think I'd be answering the phone if in labour/just had child? And B) did they not think we'd tell people FFS? I was 12 days overdue and TG had it worse than me - he nearly punched someone at work, he got so narked off with it. But then again, he is an arsey sod.

Muser · 08/07/2010 11:25

That is why someone I know advised to tell everyone your due date is 2 weeks later than it really is. Although given the early arrivals here that wouldn't always work.

iggypiggy · 08/07/2010 11:30

poo this is the thing - it's not like they won't know if something happens! And I so won't be replying to their messages if am in labour

muse That would be good - but is too late for me on that one.

Am such a moody bitch - I should be pleased they care, right?!

FannyPriceless · 08/07/2010 11:30

iggs Those last few weeks are no fun for anyone.

medee How brilliant!

Food while pg - My approach a bit like iggy described: Inform myself with the proper FSA guidelines, but also use my own judgement. I ate loads of prawns (cooked by me) and enormous quantities of mussels - but would never eat mussels in a restaurant while pg. I was brought up with seafood all around and am incredibly fussy about how to clean and check live shellfish and discard any dodgy ones. I also ate pate and smelly cheese as a regular treat, but not in huge quantities.

I had a problem with the soft egg thing as all our eggs are free range unstamped, and the BESHes informed me this means no salmonella protection. But I indulged once or twice when I knew the eggs were really fresh.

Alcohol - I was fairly relaxed throughout but tried to keep my glasses small and take little sips! This article by Zoe Williams is quite revealing on both alcohol and food decisions. Prob should be on the standard PESH reading list!

And I think it is fairly common that the first month or so of any PESH diffment is doused with 100 proof alcohol as how else would us old birds get pg in the first place? My first diffment occurred some time over the most incredibly boozy Christmas / Year I've had for years. My second occurred during a wine-fuelled gastronomic extravaganza in the south of France. Nuff said!

Hurray for medee! and hugs to iggy. Just tell them where to go - noone's going to mess with you at the mo.

PerfectDromedary · 08/07/2010 12:38

Fanny That's Gin's favourite article evah! And I love Zoe Williams for being so brilliantly grumpy.

Speaking of food, I just looked at my healthy Graze box, filled with dried fruit and nuts and seeds, and it made me want to vom. How is that possible? Berwhale demanded ready salted crisps instead. I don't think my body actually knows what's good for it.

Iggs People are rubbish and v annoying. Grrr.

OkieCokie · 08/07/2010 12:58

Just been on 2 trains and 3 buses and guess how many people offered their seats? None (Actually 1 bus had seats available but still...miserable fuckers)
