Morning girls

Just back from the nurse for my repeat blood tests and had an interesting conversation with her! Had the usual small-talk, how long have you got to go etc and I replied, well, anytime from now but within the next 24 hours would be lovely! So she asked if I'd had any signs that labour was imminent and I said, no nothing that couldn't last for weeks to come. But then she asked if I was feeling particularly grumpy...which I totally have! Feel completely pre-menstrual! She laughed and said that is exactly what happened with her daughter - 3 days of being in a foul mood followed by a swift labour. Her daughter drove herself to the birthing unit at 8pm, gave birth just before midnight and was home in her own bed by 3am. Sounds like a plan to me...

So feeling a bit more positive today.

alice that's great that about your VBAC - have you read Ina May Gaskin (can't remember if we've had this conversation, so sorry if we have!)? She has some great info on keeping labour on track.

How's everyone else doing?

kcoffin27 · 08/07/2010 10:37

Morning all, glad you all seem to be getting more sleep
I gave dh abit of scare yesterday evening,as I was getting braxton hicks/contractions every 20 mins for 2 hours. They stopped after that and have only had 1 since. As im booked in for a section I dont know how long I leave it till I go in to hospital if it was the real thing? It was enough for him to phone his mum to say she may be having our sons in the night

Im seeing the mw this afternoon so shall tell her about last night. Im sure baby has now engaged so will find out

LittleMissSnowShine · 08/07/2010 10:38

Holly - This list keeper has been Cherrypie to date. However, Cherry has just popped early and had her little boy last week so I think she might have her hands full at the min

Blueberries No, no, don't feel positive, stay grumpy and get the baby out lol Good news for you!!

Vix Great birthplan! My mum's friend has been a MW for 25 years and I'm meeting her for a coffee next week so I'm hoping to get some tips from her about how to phrase things I want to include in my birth plan. Tho if LO won't oblige and get spinning into the right position a birth plan might be a moot point!!

ElusiveMoose · 08/07/2010 10:47

Hi all,

I'm posting on the public library computer in a very grumpy mood today. Just took my car to the garage because the new exhaust they fitted two weeks ago (at a cost of £1k ) is making a funny noise. They told me the catalytic converter needs a repair, that it will take at least two hours, and that the car is undriveable. Thank goodness I'd left DS at home with my mum today.

LCR on the breech birth front, I don't want to sound negative, but it probably depends on your hospital. When I was still breech I was told by the consultant that the whole local NHS Trust had recently changed its policy, and they were now refusing to naturally birth any breech babies whatsoever . They said this was based on 'new research about outcomes', but given that loads of MWs and hospitals are quite happy to deliver breech babies naturally, this sounds like nonsense to me. I hope your hospital is a bit more flexible.

Vix your birth plan sounds very considered and positive. I just wanted to say, that what you put about labour stopping between Stage 2 and 3 is exactly what happened to me. My contractions came to a complete halt. If I'd been at home (or maybe just more 'with it') I would have tried to insist they left it longer, but the hospital had a policy of only allowing a pause of about 45 minutes before they started a drip. Given that the baby was absolutely fine (in fact, he was apparently asleep at the time ), this really annoys me in retrospect. I'm sure the fact that they forced contractions to start again before my body was ready contributed to the fact that I ended up with a ventouse delivery. So just wanted to say, I think what you've written is really important.

Blueberries poor you, doctors can be so ridiculously clumsy and insensitive sometimes. I'm sure everything is completely fine. At least you shouldn't have long to wait now to confirm that your lovely little baby is entirely healthy .

marzipan I have to say that I think baby monitors are absolutely wonderful. Even though DS is nearly 3, I will be buying a second monitor for the baby (partly because we'll be on a different floor from the children once the loft conversion's finished). I just think they give you peace of mind, because you know you can hear if anything's wrong. I was at a friend's house recently who is on the surface much more laid back than me, and doesn't have a monitor, but all the time we were there (at a reasonably noisy dinner party) she had to keep popping out into the hall to listen at the bottom of the stairs to check the children were ok. Whereas with a monitor you can sit in a noisy room (or do the gardening, or go and hang your washing out etc) without having to worry about it. If you're buying one, I can't recommend the BT Digital ones highly enough. They're quite pricey (£50 or so), but they're really, really good. The thermometer function is useful, and I love the fact that you can adjust the sensitivity as well as the volume (particularly good at night so you can turn off the 'hiss' and your baby's smallest breathing noise, but still pick up any crying etc).

Cazzy you might want to remind your GP that in France, your due date is set at 41 weeks, so you wouldn't even be overdue at all until after that. Yes, there are risks of going overdue (the placenta starts to deteriorate), but as I understand it those risks are pretty tiny until you go past 42 weeks or so. And you can always go for regular monitoring if they're concerned. I was talking to someone yesterday who had her baby at 43 weeks with no problems. DS was born at 40+13 and he was completely fine (and only average size).

virtualPA I don't know the answer to your specific question, but it's definitely possible to have several shows (I had 3 with DS, IIRC). But agree that it's worth letting your MW know you've had one, as it could be a sign that things will start happening soon (how exciting!!).

dogwalker it sounds like you're having a tiring couple of days. Welcome to the wonderful world of parenting .

Wow, long post. Can you tell I'm stranded in the library with nothing to do ? Not much news from me, except that the loft is going swimmingly. They've nearly finished the structural stuff (in just a week!), and the stairs are already going in on Monday . I'm so glad the heavy stuff will be done before the baby arrives. And I absolutely love my builders, who have been friendly, efficient and considerate throughout - it's not often you can say that!!

ElusiveMoose · 08/07/2010 10:51

Oh, and LCR, my friend had her baby at Crowborough and absolutely raved about it. Of my six NCT buddies (small sample, I admit), I'd say she was the only one who had a really positive birth experience.(She wanted the second one there as well but had to be transferred in the end .)

ElusiveMoose · 08/07/2010 10:57

Me again (I'm BOOOORED!!!). Any bright ideas of what I can get DH for our anniversary next week? We always go for the traditional presents, and this year it's sugar. Which sounds easy, but I want to think of something that isn't just a great big pile of chocolate. Any thoughts??

vix206 · 08/07/2010 10:57

Yes quite right about the birth plan being a moot point if baby doesn't turn, this is why we called it birth preferences instead of a plan. More realistic

HollyandKitty · 08/07/2010 11:06

Wow-weeeeeeee littlemisssnowshine

No wonder! Congratulations Cherrypie!!!!

bouncingblueberries · 08/07/2010 11:11

elusive I'm on the search for anniversary presents too. My dh is rubbish to buy for - he's not in to gadgets and his only real passion outside our little family is running. But he already has 3 drawers stuffed with running gear so I'm loathed to buy him anything else! Have you had a look at notonthehighstreet.com? They have some nice things. Not sure what you could do for sugar though...I doubt your dh would appreciate a cake stand! Last year dh cooked me a wonderful meal for our anniversary - he put a linen tablecloth on the table and even printed menus, it was so special. Might try and do something like that for him this year, depending on when baby arrives!

Emster30 · 08/07/2010 11:14

Grr about your car elusivemoose!

This is my birth plan. I didn't really want to make one so have kept it fairly free and easy!

My birth partner is my husband, A.
As this is my first baby I have no idea how I will feel and cope and am prepared to be open-
minded to all forms of pain relief if I need them.
I would like to use a birth pool during labour and delivery if at all possible. I would like to
use gas and air for additional pain relief.
Should a pool not be available, I would like to remain as mobile and active during labour as
possible, and would like to be encouraged to try different positions.
If I am not coping with the pain please suggest things I can do to ease it, and/or additional
forms of pain relief.
I am happy for students to attend.
I would like to have immediate skin to skin contact with the baby when he or she is born.
Andrew does not want to cut the cord. He would like to determine the sex of the baby
himself.
I am happy to have the injection to deliver the placenta if necessary, but would also be happy
to have a natural third stage if everything else has gone to plan and there is no medical reason
for this not to happen.
I plan to breastfeed and do not want my baby to be given any formula unnecessarily. If
supplemental feeding is necessary I would rather this is done by syringe/cup/spoon rather
than bottle. I would like help to establish breastfeeding.
We are happy for our baby to receive the Vitamin K injection.
I appreciate that things may not go to plan and it may be necessary to have further
interventions. I would be grateful if the doctors and midwives could explain what is
necessary and why. A is my next of kin and I am happy for him to take any decisions
on my behalf should I be unable to make them.

mrsZaC · 08/07/2010 11:16

hey ladies, just a quickie as I can't keep up now there are so many posts, my brain isn't quite working that way just now!

Just wanted to say how disgusted i am at the negative comments the midwives are giving some of you ladies, grrr why do they have to be so negative, birth is a positive, natural thing that women all over the world do without any need for intervention!!! I'm not expert but from what I've been told they can't make you do anything you don't want to do, (unless you or baby are in danger) baby will come out when it likes and there are many ways to encourage a breech baby to turn instead of resorting to c section. I also hate the thought of being time-contstrained, just because your having a slow labour doesn't mean that baby won't come out on it's own, it's just taking it's time!! sorry to rant.. i just get so angry about all this i think I've been reading too much ina may (which btw almost finished and really enjoyed!)

I don't know if this is of any use to those who are worried but my hypnobirthing practitioner has a technique for turning breech babies, I'm sure if you called up a local one they would be able to do this for you, as she has offered me if this happens. just a thought.

good luck to all those who feel they may be close, can't wait to see that next name on the list!! xxx

Chulita · 08/07/2010 11:58

mrsZaC I get really angry about it too - esp unnecessary cs, makes my blood boil!

elusive sorry you're so bored, filling time is hard work when you're not at home but yea, good thing you don't have DS with you!

I really need a nap but need to try and ring Paypal again...argh, I hate giving up sleep to talk to irritating people

holly if you re-post your age/due date/location etc I'll pop you on the list when I've done what I need to

OP posts:
vix206 · 08/07/2010 12:14

Woohoo I am so happy! I had to wait a very long time to see the midwife but it was worth the wait because the baby isn't transverse after all

He is head down and 1/5 engaged

mrsZaC · 08/07/2010 12:33

woo hoo Vix that's brilliant news

babyducky · 08/07/2010 12:37

Hi all, welcome virtual

Hey Holly, I haven't lived here long so don't know many people, I have a 3 year old boy so have a few mummy friends but would be good for this baby to have some little friends too

Just back from midwife, everything is fine, baby head down thank god, hopefully it stays there!

Hope everyone is good xx

babyducky · 08/07/2010 12:39

Great news vix! Good birth plan too

USMum27 · 08/07/2010 13:31

Excellent news vix and ducky! Yay for all the turning babies

Vix your birth plan is excellent - it looks like you and the DH have really given it a lot of thought and it is so nicely presented. I still haven't managed to do one, but am not sure what to write - I imagine it will all end up as epidural please!

Hope all the grumpy ladies are feeling better or at least it is leading to some popping! Blueberries I imagine you'll be next

Wow, we're all quiet today! Anyone doing anything interesting? I've just let DD stare gormlessly at Cbeebies so I could catch up with last night's Desperate Houswives [brazonly unashamed emoticon] Might have to let her play in the garden while I hang up the washing in order to assuage the guilt I probably should be feeling

Hope everyone's having a lovely day!

OP posts:
mrsZaC · 08/07/2010 15:38

chulita I'm still at work so nothing interesting from me, had my brazillian done today.. wasn't bad at all (sorry if TMI!)

Everyone need their me time, don't feel guilty

bouncingblueberries · 08/07/2010 15:42

mrsZac a brazilian! I would love to have the nerve, but having just been for a pedicure and barely able to tolerate my cuticles being sorted out, I doubt I have the tolerance just now. Pain threshold not at it's best at the moment, which is a bit worrying really...

chulita we need to do something to save our sanity!

USmum I hope you're right

mrsZaC · 08/07/2010 15:55

If you get a good waxer it's not as bad as it sounds, especially if you get it done as soon as it grows back in, the hair is much softer. I was expecting it to be really sore today but was totally fine! hopefully that means childbirth will be a breeze too (wishful thinking emocion)

Chulita · 08/07/2010 16:18

I've fancied having a brazilian but I'm too much of a wimp to bare my bits! I'm not even bothering to shave this time just cos I can't keep on top of it enough and I'm never going to see any of these ladies again - just a good trim should do it.

OP posts:
marzipananimal · 08/07/2010 16:24

I got dh to have a go down there with some immac (as i can no longer see over my bump). He did quite a good job (although not perfectly symmetrical ) I must say that's the weirdest thing we've ever done together!!
I'm too scared to have it waxed and shaving irritates my skin too much

mrsZaC · 08/07/2010 16:29

chulita you should give it a go, very liberating! hehe

marzipan i can't shave either, I'm the kind that if I shaved my legs in the morning it would be stubbly by the evening I can't see over my bump either, so I had no idea what state it was in!
