Hi everyone,

Sorry for being so rubbish at posting but I am sooooo knackered all the time. Why can't we all get a good nights sleep, our bodies should be stock piling sleep ready for the sleepness nights when the babies arrive!

girlsyearapart your poor DD, no cakes. I totally sympathise as I am allergic to all dairy products and have been all my life so no chocolate for me!

blueberries some of these medical professionals can be so tackless, but as someone else pointed out if there was any problems they would have been picked up on a scan by now so try not to worry (if thats possible!)

I'm so uncomfortable at the moment, DS climbing all over me all the time doesn't help, it's so much harder second time around when you have other little ones to look after. Heart burn is also driving me mad at the moment.

DH is travelling back to Somerset (where we used to live) tomorrow to our storage unit to collect all of our baby stuff as the nursery is finally (almost) finished, yay! Just need a staircase now, should be arriving within the next three weeks. The sooner the better as this ladder climbing is getting harder and harder!

Right of to wake DS up!

loobyt · 07/07/2010 16:13

Oh and I have a scan next week to check that my low lying palcenta has moved up, fingers crossed that it has. No bleeds so MW said it should be okay. Also going to find out if we are team pink or blue!

VirtualPA · 07/07/2010 16:18

really glad I joined, I have a question....

I had my bloody show Sunday. Just wiped myself and I have another one but it is sort of stuck. Can I just pull it out? (sorry TMI)

neenz · 07/07/2010 16:41

Thanks for kind words re glucose - I know I am totally overreacting to start thinking of GD just cos of one raised glucose result. I'm sure it will be back to normal next week.

But I can totally sympathise Blueberries re getting freaked out at appts. Don't worry - there will be nothing wrong with your baby. I agree you should ring the doc and ask again what the B12 deficiency actually means. It probably isn't anything to do with development of the baby in the first trimester.

bouncingblueberries · 07/07/2010 16:44

thanks girls. Just had a bath and feel much calmer about the whole thing. Also did a quick search online and discovered that pregnancy itself can cause this! So I'm going to put it out of my head and concentrate on more important things, like, what's for dinner?

Put a good dose of clary sage in the bath too...

neenz · 07/07/2010 16:45

Sorry just seen you may be folate deficient too blueberries - but that doesn't mean you WERE folate deficient in the 1st trimester. And even if you were, the likelihood that that would lead to defects is very low. And yes I am sure it would have been picked up on the scans.

neenz · 07/07/2010 16:46

x-posted blueberries

fruitshootsandheaves · 07/07/2010 16:55

Just gatecrashing as I'm not pregnant

Good luck to all you expecting August babies. I have 3 born in August (yes I know, bad planning, very expensive month!)
August babies are great

marzipananimal · 07/07/2010 17:35

Hi virtualPA I'm afraid i don't know much about shows (first timer here) but it's probably worth phoning your midwife to tell her you've had a show and then you can ask her about the stuck one too.

I saw the midwife yesterday and she said she thought baby was head down and bottom up but the way she said it didn't fill me with confidence. Do they often get it wrong? I'm only 34 weeks though so prob shouldn't be worrying

USMum27 · 07/07/2010 17:37

Congratulations Cherry! It sounds like you and the DCs are doing very well and you had a blissful birth .... I hope we're all so lucky!

I feel like a complete idiot today. Woke up feeling great (for the first time in a couple of weeks) and got on the tube for my mammoth journey into work and started feeling very ill - nauseous and faint. When I finally made it into work I had loads of the very helpful 'you look dreadful' comments and they sent me to occupational health to lie down. As I wasn't getting any better, I called the midwife and they told me to come in straight away as it might be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Long story short both baby and I are fine and they think I have a viral infection or just a reaction to the heat/humidity - needless to say I feel ridiculous for having bothered them though they kept saying it was better to have called and come in as it could have been something serious.

On the plus side my stubborn transverse little girl has finally flipped to be head down! Good luck to all of you with stubborn LOs - don't worry there is still plenty of room for them to move

Chulita · 07/07/2010 18:03

LCRLCR you can birth a breech baby! No need for a cs, for some reason in this country we're told that it has to be a cs and it so doesn't. Ask the midwife about people with experience and if need be see if a doula around has any experience - it's not impossible by any stretch, two of my friends birthed breech babies. Before this LO turned he was either transverse or breech and I was more than happy to try a breech birth. (He turned at 36+ )

marzipan they can get it wrong, they never picked up DD was back to back. They're normally pretty good on which way up they are though.

Don't panic on stubborn babies though, we've all got time for them to move around a bit more!

blueberries glad you're feeling better about things!

Emster30 · 07/07/2010 18:18

Chulita I know what you mean about it not being fair when people who are due after us have had their babies first! Though I don't feel ready just yet...

fruitshootsandheaves thanks! Mine is technically due in July but am being pessimistic and thinking August... I was born at the end of August and I am obviously lovely so that means all these August babies will be lovely too.

bouncingblueberries · 07/07/2010 18:42

Thanks neenz

cazzybabs · 07/07/2010 19:10

grggghhhhh saw different doctor today... she is pleased my blood pressure is lower but gave me a new prescription which rather than conveniently taking to the hospital pharmacy I have to take it to my GP who has to re-write it...who why is that better ???? My urine came back positive for everything and she measured me and I was only 33 weeks even though last week the consultant measured me at 35 weeks....is the baby shrinking no I don't think so....anyway I now have to go for a growth scan....grghhhh
plus she spent the whole time going on about how they will offer me a ecs at 40 weeks which I really don't want (all 3 girls have been at least 11 days overdue) and then kept saying when I was saying I don't want one..she said "Yes but there is no advantage going over 40 weeks)...erghh yes I don't want a cs!

RANT RANT RANT

girlsyearapart · 07/07/2010 19:23

evening all

welcome virtual sorry no idea about the show as never had one with either of mine.

fruitshoot that is really kind of you to post. I had been efficently having september babies but now having an august one- at least they'll be in 3 consecutive school years so will be two older ones to look after the little august baby!

To everyone who has sent best wishes following dd2s test- she is allergic to so many things we already had the whole epipen thing going on looby she is also cows milk protein allergic but fingers crossed she's growing out of that one.

Have had hectic day looking after my 2 plus another 1 all day plus my niece for part of it. Need a bath and book moment

chulita can you let me know what reflexology was like and what the refrlexologist said wrt spurring the baby on to make an appearance? planning it next week once I'm 37 wks.

blueberries don't you just love 'professionals' and their comments?! I remember with dd1 the sonographer being really scary about the head measurement and saying it was too small then asking me to return 2 weeks later! so spent 2 loooong wks stressing out totally unneccesarily..

thedogwalker · 07/07/2010 19:36

Hello all

cazzybabs I am shocked at how the GP spoke to you. I have 3 questions which me and my DH will be asking throughout my labour, but they may also help you out now. I would ask the GP or whoever you next see the following

  1. What are the benefits of having an ecs?
  2. What are the benefits of not going over 40 weeks?
  3. What are the risks of not of having an ecs?
  4. What the are risks of having the ecs?
  5. What are the risks for going over 40 weeks?
  6. What are the alternatives?

when I went to a hynpnotherapy class, I was told these questions, i.e BRA.. Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, so that either I or my DH can ask the hospital if they wish to carry out procedures which we were not sure of. I hope they will help you and I hope this has not come across as patronising, I am just so incensed that these major decisions are being made for you without explanation.

Virtual welcome to the clan. Sorry I've no idea about the show question, this is my first LO and so not had one yet.

I am knackered today. Looked after my friend's 2 kids all day. Wow that was an eye opener. another 2 days to go, I will be on my knees by friday teatime!!!!

Well I hope everyone is okay and coping with the heat. Take care xxx

bouncingblueberries · 07/07/2010 19:57

cazzy that is rubbish! An ecs carries risks and can mean you take longer to recover. It is major abdominal surgery after all!

Blimmin health professionals! Women gave birth to perfectly healthy babies for a looooong time before sonograms and blood tests were introduced ffs!

And chulita, like girls I'd love to hear all about your reflexolgy, especially if it gets things moving!

Chulita · 07/07/2010 20:23

cazzy that's a pile of crap. Don't let them bully you into major surgery I agree with thedogwalker, ask what the risks are if you do go overdue. It's easy for the mw to say - she's not the one who has to recover from it!

virtual I had a show with DD and it didn't always just fall out. I pulled it out but then I would anyway, if it's there it obviously doesn't want to be in anymore imo (that is just imo though!)

gya and blueberries reflexology was very relaxing, an hour of foot massage and my backache is a lot less painful tonight. It was worth it just for the relaxing bit. She did say there were things they could do to see if the cervix was ripe/speed things up a bit but she refused to do anything til 40 weeks. A friend recommended another lady who was happy to do things a bit earlier so I'm going to try and see her next week. I'm 38 weeks tomorrow so I don't think I'm jumping the gun!

OP posts:
neenz · 07/07/2010 21:40

Cazzy how annoying - 'there is no benefit to going over 40wks'... ffs! Only that there are RISKS involved with a section and it's not pleasant to recover from with a new baby to look after. Insist on monitoring instead. They shouldn't be forcing you into a section without good reason. The 'benefits, risks, alternatives' mantra is excellent

I was also going to say about a breech baby - find someone at the hospital who can deliver breech! It is possible if you don;t want a section. A friend of mine delivered breech at home (they didn't realise she was breech)

I'd been getting up three times a night to go to the loo recently so the last 2 days I have not had anything to drink after 6pm (had loads to drink beforehand) and I have not had to get up at all! It has been bliss getting a proper night's sleep.

Alicetheinvisible · 08/07/2010 08:29

Hello Ladies, really shouldn't be on here, but multitasking as eating breakfast at the same time

Cazzy they cannot make you have a cs. It is called an elective as in you elect to have it. Not forced to. I would try to get a second opinion.

Saw MW yesterday and actually quite pleased how it all went (you may remember that i do not have much confidence in my mw) Baby has now turned into correct position (thought it had as it felt different yesterday morning) and although not engaged yet, it is resting on the brim. I am measuring 36wks (i am 35+3) so happy with that. BP, urine all fine, although she wants me to keep an eye on my ankles. We spoke about labour and she cleared up a couple of things.
1)Once in established labour i must get to 1cm per hour, if it goes much slower than that i will be in for a cs
2)I will be given no hormones whatsoever (pleased about this)
3)I can go for a sweep at 39wks if i want, to try to avoid going over (cs at +10days over)
4)If there is a MW available, i can get a visit at home in early labour to check on me/baby if i wish.

Feeling a lot more confident about the VBAC now.

Now, i really must get on with my million and one things to be done before 11am have a good day ladies

marzipananimal · 08/07/2010 09:17

morning ladies, I'm bored!
Was going to go out but I have a painful foot . Bit random but there's a sore, slightly swollen patch between the ball of my left foot and my heel and it hurts to walk. Could that be pregnancy related?
Might have to spend my morning making lists instead (things still to buy, hospital bag, jobs to do before baby comes...)

On stuff to buy, are baby monitors essential and are they all really expensive?

marzipananimal · 08/07/2010 09:26

oh and i decided i ought to take my rings off yesterday as my fingers are getting fatter and I only just managed to get them off with lots of icy water, washing up liquid and pain! Glad I didn't leave it any longer!

LittleMissSnowShine · 08/07/2010 10:05

LCR - Same position as you, 33 weeks, baby alternating between transverse and breech even with all my birth ball bouncing/all fours exercises etc. But, as you say, babies can turn right up to 37/38 weeks so keep hoping!!

marzipan I took my rings off about 4 weeks ago since my fingers and feet have been very puffy in heat and was really worried they'd stick! Feel a bit naked without them and obviously random strangers think I'm an unmarried, young mum, not helped by my usual hippie-ish clothing and long hair

I haven't bothered with a baby monitor - our house is tiny, even if we were downstairs and LO was upstairs there'd be no problem hearing them. So I've been thinking we don't really need them...

neenz - Been doing the same so don't need to use the loo at 3am. So great not waking up til 7am!! We need to enjoy the sleep while we can

vix206 · 08/07/2010 10:11

Hi girls, hope you are all well this morning I am just about to go off to see the midwife. baby is still transverse but I had a great night's sleep - best for months! 5 whole hours unbroken - I couldn't believe it! But then I laughed because I realised that was quite pathetic - I used to be able to sleep for 10 hours unbroken and now I am celebrating at 5

Anyway, DH & I have more or less finished our birth preferences now and I thought I'd share for those of you who are looking at this stuff. It is obviously heavily influenced by our hypnobirthing course

Birth Preferences

In General
I plan to give birth at home. I hope that the midwife who attends me in labour will
support, reassure and encourage me, using her experience to guide me through labour
and offer suggestions.

We will be using hypnobirthing and relaxation techniques. We would like a natural birth
and would really appreciate a quiet and calm environment. Please be assured that you
will have our full co-operation in the event of a medical circumstance, subject to having
discussed things.

The Labour
We would like to allow labour and delivery to progress at its own pace, and would
appreciate having no time pressures as far as possible, or procedures based solely on
the passing of time. If all else is well with the baby and me, we are happy to wait while
nature takes its course.

I would like the lighting to remain dim and the room to be as calm and quiet as possible.
There is no need to ask my permission before listening to baby's heartbeat.
I hope to manage without drugs for pain relief, and I plan to use hypnobirthing with the
help of James. I find being sick very traumatic and scary so I would like to avoid gas and
air if possible, but would like it available to me in case I feel I need to give it a try.

I understand that labour can slow down or even stop for around an hour between stage
two and three, please allow a passive hour to enable me to stay relaxed and listen to my
body's cues as to when baby is ready to be helped into the world!

The Birth
I would obviously like to avoid perineal damage if possible and would appreciate your
guidance in giving birth gently to accomplish this. However, I would rather tear naturally
than have an episiotomy.

I would like the lights dimmed when my baby is born, and for the minimum amount of
noise to be made. We hope that it will be a gentle and calm entry into the world using
the gentle birth breathing rather than pushing the baby out. Unless James chooses to I
would feel more comfortable if he stays by my upper body than watching the baby
actually being born! Although I understand birth is a messy event it is very important to
me to maintain as much dignity and modesty as possible. If I feel too exposed or that I
have lost dignity I will find that very traumatic.

When the baby is born, please pass him straight to me to lay on my chest. I would like
James to come into the bed with us once the baby has been born so we can bond
together as a family. At time of writing James has no strong desire to cut the cord but if
he feels he would like to when the time comes he will say so.

I would like a physiological third stage with the cord clamped and cut when it stops
pulsating. I wish no drugs to be used unless specifically needed. It is important to me
that you do not clamp the cord until it has stopped pulsating, unless you need to take
emergency steps which preclude this. We do not wish to keep (or even see!) the
placenta! I would like the lights kept down low for the third stage and also to maintain
skin to skin contact with the baby.

Care of the Baby
If possible I would rather have baby with me for an hour after birth, before any weighing
etc. I would like to breastfeed my baby as soon as possible after the birth.

If, for some reason, I am medically unwell and unable to have skin-to-skin contact with
my baby I would like James to have skin-to-skin contact with him.

We are happy for the baby to receive the Vitamin K injection.

Preferences in the case of transfer to hospital
If transfer by ambulance becomes necessary, please do not strap me in on my back - I
would prefer to be on my side, to make contractions easier to deal with. Please do not
offer Pethidine/Demerol as I am concerned about its possible effect on my state of mind
in labour, and on my baby's health. If an epidural is unavoidable I would prefer to have a
mobile epidural if at all possible.

We would appreciate the same peaceful environment in hospital as we have planned at
home, and to still pursue a natural birth using hypnobirthing techniques.
I am very keen to avoid a caesarean section if it is at all possible. I particularly would
like to avoid a caesarean just for slow progress. If labour is simply taking a long time but
my baby is not in immediate danger, please would you encourage me to keep going and
perhaps to try changes of position or movements which might help. Please do not offer a
caesarean unless my baby is in danger.

If a caesarean section becomes necessary, I would prefer to remain awake with epidural
or spinal block anaesthesia. I would like James to stay with me at all times, and would
like to breastfeed the baby as soon after birth as possible.

Please do not give my baby supplements of glucose water or formula milk without my
permission. I would expressly like to avoid having any formula supplements unless it is
unavoidable, and certainly not in the first two days in any event.

If supplements are necessary, please give them by spoon or other method, not by
bottle. Wherever possible I would prefer that the baby is spoon fed my colostrum rather
than other supplements.

If I have trouble breastfeeding, I would greatly appreciate the help of a midwife who is
fully supportive of breastfeeding.

Thank you so much for reading this and helping us to have the birth we are hoping for.

HollyandKitty · 08/07/2010 10:15

Hey All,

Does anyone know how to get your name on the list? Mine doesn't seem to have appeared yet.

Hi Chulita lovely to meet you! So glad you like the name.

Hello Littlemisssnowshine Yes, i have been very organised although now i get a creeping envy about people that have decided to keep their LOs sex or name a surprise!!!

Hey LCRLCR Lovely to meet another brightonian. I've heard good things about crowborough! I don't drive or have a partner that drives so I'm going to stick with brighton although i keep getting more and more tempted by a home birth. Did I see you mention your LO has been breech/ transverse? I'm in the same boat!

Hello thedogwalker how fabulous to hear about your well endowed bean!!!!!! That must have been a bit of a shocker. Thank you re the name.... do you have any ideas for your little boy?

Hi babyducky Yay! More brighton people. Do you ever get together? I'm on my own and am really keen to make some mummy friends and my current friends seem to be a bit pre-occupied with vodka based cocktails!

Thanks bouncingblueberries

Thank you MrsZac We're all on quite a journey eh?

MY GOD, I have just realised how hungry I am. I must leave my computer this second and go in search of carbohydrate based goods. Ahhhhh, the sweet joys of pregnancy!!!
