I haven't been nesting either alice, I wish I had but just too lazy! Fortunately my mum's coming up on Sunday for a few days to help clean the house (I have a lovely mum Makes me quite emotional to think I'll be a mummy soon!)

dogwalker and nichy do you know why they don't have gas and air in Germany and Belgium ?

NichyNoo · 29/07/2010 16:33

Apparently it isn't the norm in Europe and is only an Anglo thing (Ireland, UK).

When we did the hospital tour in Belgium the midwife said it isn't a clinically proven pain relief, more of a placebo/way of distracting women from pain

Alicetheinvisible · 29/07/2010 16:35

Marzi my grandma, aunt and great aunt came up the other week for ladies day at the races and my great aunt said to my grandma afterwards that they should come up again before the baby is born to blitz the house for me bless her. Once all the structural stuff is done to the house i feel as though i want to make it look pretty, but until then there is hardly any point. Shabby chic is sooo in atm

Alicetheinvisible · 29/07/2010 17:25

Oh bugger! I need this baby to stay in as long as possible now! Looks like there is a fault with our shower (the new one) so will have to wait to hear from Victoria Plumb wrt replacing it took ages to arrive the first time.

ElusiveMoose · 29/07/2010 18:04

Got a good birth story for you, ladies, that happened to a friend of a friend last week. Perfectly normal pregnancy, 37 weeks, no signs that anything was imminent. Woke up in the middle of the night 'feeling a bit funny', went into the bathroom. Had the mother of all contractions and let out a bloodcurdling scream. Husband ran into the bathroom to find baby lying on the floor having fallen out . Paramedics were called, and when they arrived their only concern was that the baby might have hurt its head when it landed on the floor (it was fine). Not sure if I'm jealous of this birth story or not .

LizzieA · 29/07/2010 20:03

elusive please tell me it was baby number eleven for your friend and she also holds the Guiness World Records for pain threshold and worlds largest ladies bits!!!!! That's one scary story!

summerymummy · 29/07/2010 20:12

wow elusive, that is an amazing birth story, i thought things like that only happened in soaps!! i'm hoping something is happening over here, having contractions every 7-8 mins lasting about 40 secs but not convinced it's actual labour coz they don't actually hurt, and last time i remember they did definitely hurt. midwife says it's a good sign so fingers crossed they keep coming... and fingers crossed for a quick labour... although not as quick as falling out on the bathroom floor

Alicetheinvisible · 29/07/2010 20:15

Eeeeek!!! Elusive

Think i have pulled something in my back as have terrible backache this evening.

Good luck summery

ElusiveMoose · 29/07/2010 21:12

Can't believe I forgot to mention, Lizzie - it was her first baby .

Good luck summery!!

Come on girls, we've had a whole couple of days without a baby now - I want some more announcements!! (Waits impatiently for kcoffin to come on and post - surely she's got nothing better to do .)

Bubbabear · 29/07/2010 22:21

elusive that story actually made me giggle, would be very scary if that happened but sounds so ridiculous after everything that's drummed into us abt staying at home as long as possible & timing contractions etc. I'm prob just a bit hysterical what with all this waiting about!

alice in one of our antenatal classes we had to make a list of things we thought would help us in the early stages of labour so we wrote 'wine!' The lady leading the class said 'yes absolutely, if it'll help u to relax can be a very good thing'

CoronaAndLime · 30/07/2010 05:29

Good morning ladies

Am up soooo early cos I just cant seem to get comfy.
Think things may be starting as I've had a 'show' and am feeling 'crampy'.

I'm due on Monday so could be starting!
I think this baby has been waiting for my MIL (who is lovley) to come to stay before making an apperance.
At least I have child care for Dd (2yrs) sorted now MILs here.

Off to bounce on my ball.
TTFN

LittleMissSnowShine · 30/07/2010 07:05

Corona - Good luck! I'm up early too, which is strange for me since while everyone else seems to be having broken sleep I've been sleeping like a log! Feeling a bit crampy and breathless this morning too tho, but no show and still 4 weeks til due date so don't think much will be happening for me just yet!

Elusive - My cousin had her third child on the bathroom floor. She went to the hospital and they insisted she went back home again since she was only a few cm dilated and hospital was busy. She tried pointing out she;d had two other kids and she knew what she was talking about when she said she was pretty sure it wouldn't be much longer but they sent her home anyway and less than an hour later her husband was cutting the cord on the bathroom floor and she'd only had a couple of paracetamol for the pain!! Again, not sure if that terrifies me or makes me jealous lol

Alice, bubba - At my active birth workshop on Wednesday the new age midwife type who was leading things recommended wine as well, half a glass in the evenings after 36 weeks to help you relax and take the edge off any crampy pains etc. Said it's prob better than paracetamol and if it helps you rest/relax then it's a good thing!! Sounds like good advice to me

Still no sign of the cat Put some posters through letter boxes yesterday and a neighbour I've only spoken to a couple of times before phoned yesterday and said he was pretty sure he'd seen our cat on Wednesday (we haven't seen him since Tues morning) so feeling a bit more optimistic. Left out some fish for him last night but no sign as yet. Hope he comes home soon, it's making me feel really on edge which is not the greatest sensation for a soon to be first time mum

Alicetheinvisible · 30/07/2010 08:01

LittleMiss hope your cat is just having an adventure.

I actually had a weak G&T last night because of the backache and a soak in the bath. Slept ok, but was a struggle to get comfy to start with. Woke up this morning, stretched my legs out and got horrendous cramp in my calf. DH woke up and rubbed it for me

Still got crampy backache but i wonder if it is to do with being a bit constipated for a few days. Getting a bit stressed and hormonal atm, which is unlike me, but going to a friend's for lunch so that will help distract me a bit.

Sorry, just waffling on, feel a bit out of touch with other threads atm, as all i can concentrate on is this bump!

Dibbydab · 30/07/2010 09:15

Cornona and Summery have you been told that your babies are fully engaged (or even partially?) I'm due on Monday as well and midwife told me yesterday that baby is just on pelvic brim, not yet engaged.

Did any of you 2nd/3rd timers have contractions start without your first baby being engaged? Am getting a bit ansty that if baby isn't even starting to head south, there's no way it's going to arrive anywhere near it's due date.

Got on my ball last night and was hip wiggling for all I was worth, any other suggestions?

LittleMiss, fingers crossed your cat comes home soon.

Alice hope your shower gets sorted soon, why can't things just work properly!?

Neenz throw some of those biccies in this direction with a nice cup of tea when they're done, they sound delish.

marzipananimal · 30/07/2010 12:58

Hope things are going well corona

Ugh I feel so lethargic today, I'm soooo fed up with feeling like this!!
Feeling sorry for DH too cos I'm being an irrational grump. I don't want to be pregnant any more

Jaysfourth · 30/07/2010 13:32

Hi all

need to ask a question, who has had any experience of ECV? My naughty one is extended breach. This might not be the best place to post, but thought i could first try here. i am 36 +4 and have been booked in for 38 weeks for this procedure. There was no pressure to do it, but i would like to avoid a section ( if i can help it) but i am feeling a bit uneasy about it... just wanted views really

cazzybabs · 30/07/2010 14:17

Jay - no direct experience of ECV but friend had it done and said it was really uncomfortable but it worked!

I took dd3 to the park today whilst the other 2 had a tennis lesson and some mother was really shocked I was out and about as it was due date...yes because clearly i am going to hang about in my house for the next x days waiting

god i am so tired...have thrown the girls out in the garden as am not up for much more

sodding skip and scaffolding are still here and th roofers buggered off on holiday so can't phone him to ask why they are still here - grhhhh

ElusiveMoose · 30/07/2010 14:27

cazzy I know, it's weird, isn't it? My parents seem reasonably appalled that I'm even still driving, let alone continuing to take DS out and about exactly as I normally would. And my mother was actually shocked when she found out I was still taking DS swimming - she starting muttering about the risk of infections . I think the only thing I've drawn the line at now is soft play, as I'm really not capable of clambering around the equipment with DS any more .

cazzybabs · 30/07/2010 15:18

I think people imagine suddenly there you are in full blown labour - contractions every minute and waters breaking...although with your friend maybe we should not venture too far. mind you quite fancy a baby at the park...certainly no medical intervention there

weehector · 30/07/2010 15:27

High 'crampy' word count today..sounds like things going in the right direction for another wave of babies to take us into August.

jaysforth have you thought about hypnotherapy before trying the ECV? My Hypnobirthing midwives were talking about it on Wednesday night as the best thing ever pre ECV as well as the polar bear position & visualisation.

Can I join the conversation re just how much we should be doing/venturing at this stage? Physical status is this - I'm 39+1 today & if I'm honest with myself, I do think things are going to happen relatively soon (but how soon I have no idea) - lots of shuffling down today (was 2/5th on Monday) which hasn't been painful as such but does feel contracty in a non BH way (rippling from top of bump), horrible nausea (which I just googled and one site suggested could be pre labour) & the ongoing lower back pain.

I'm trying to make 2 executive decisions re plans I have, can anyone advise if I'm being criminally stupid..

  • jumping in the car this avo on my own to head to Glasgow (about an 1hr away) for dinner with friends & a quick shop - think I will go for this anyway, just freaked by website saying nausea can indicate a hormone surge 24hrs before labour & these quick birth stories this am!
  • my family home is 2hrs away but there's a memorial service being held there on Monday for a very close family friend who was based in the States. I'd love to see & pay my respects to his American wife as it would be a long time before I would see her again but DH is working so I'd have to do it on my own as daytrip with 4 hrs of driving or go down on Sunday & come back after the service on Monday.

Am being stupid when my instincts say things aren't far away or am I being overcautious and will most likely be still here in 2 weeks time going slowly crazy because all I've done is sit on the sofa eating biscuits & watching back to back Mad Men episodes? Any previous experiences with the nausea prelabour?

weehector · 30/07/2010 15:46

Fuck it, I'm off to Glasgow. I've given up drinking, Brie & snowboarding for 9 months. I deserve some sushi with my pals. The worst that can happen is my membranes go in public & someone has to drive me home.

cazzybabs · 30/07/2010 16:08

Weehector - i'd go...if you haven't had your show chances are you'll be fine

(mind you now you are damned - but Glasgow hasd matenerity hospitals and maybe MrsZC can pop round and take some cool photos of your little onw! - enjoy your sushi)

neenz · 30/07/2010 17:45

Weehector, I would go to both - have fun! It is your first baby isn't it? So unlikely to happen mega quick. You can't drive if in labour tho - can someone else drive you on Monday? I think you will be fine tonight.

Have some of these biccies I made, ladies, they are delish!

I have been feeling a bit 'off' today. I'm only 38wks tho so not expecting anything but can live in hope. Might blow up my birth ball and get bouncing - is that good for getting baby to head south? I was 3/5 on Tues .

Dibby I wouldn't worry, it can head south very quickly so could be engaged now. It's a frustrating waiting game tho isn't it.

Jaysfourth, I have heard hypnotherapy can be good for turning baby. ECV is good obv and worth a try - there are some small risks I think but if it is experienced mw who does it and I think they do it under ultrasound don't they? So should be fine. Better than a section!

LittleMissSnowShine · 30/07/2010 18:50

neenz - I've been baking loads too, mmmm...yummy calories without a lot of guilt attached. woo hoo!! thanks for the biccie - i'll swap you a red velvet cupcake

weehector - hope you enjoy the sushi and seeing your friends in glasgow! i prob wouldn't want to be doing 4 hours of driving on my own in one day esp if you're feeling crampy and sick and your due date is getting very close. maybe you could go on sunday and come back on monday - pregnancy isn't an illness or anything but when things are getting so close i wouldn't push yourself too hard just in case.

dibbydab - signs of engagement are twinges down below and light contractions. midwives at hospital suggested we spend a lot of time on gym balls, either bouncing on them or leaning over them and my GP suggested jumping up and down lol

still no cat and the heart burn has returned with a vengeance! have tried chocolate milk, gaviscon, chewing mint gum and a ranitadine tablet but no luck - had a bagel with pastrami, cheese and pickles for lunch so prob my own fault

vix206 · 30/07/2010 19:22

Hello everyone

I am feeling great because DH talked me into taking maternity leave from this coming Tuesday - I have to go in on Monday because the surveyor is coming to our house on behalf of the vendor and I would find it stressful staying here while he pokes around! So DH is staying home and I'm off to work for 1 last day. Then, if all goes to plan, I'll stay off until mid-late September and then me and the little one will gradually show our faces at work on a very part time basis.

I'll still be doing some work from home every day (because I can't help myself) but I can't tell you how relieved I am to be taking some time off. The longest I've ever taken is 5 days so this is big for me

So, I'm going to be baking, cooking ahead and cleaning the house like lots of you are doing - and I can't wait!

I'm off to a breastfeeding workshop tomorrow which I'm looking forward to. I am almost 38 weeks and getting so many uncomfortable twinges and tightenings now, I often feel like I am going to 'pop' down there if that makes sense? Its like a feeling of 'OMG I'm going to wet myself' but painful, makes you want to grab your crotch like a small child does when they need a wee!

Also, when baby moves now it is really powerful and often painful, and hard as a newbie to know sometimes whether it is a big upward nudge from baby or a contraction. Its happening as I type actually, I wonder if it is BH - my tummy certainly goes very hard when it happens....

Is anyone up to anything exciting this weekend?
