Hi everyone!

My husband and I recently found out on an early dating scan (like, very early, 5+ weeks) that we are expecting twins. We're being re scanned in 2 weeks time to confirm, but I'm wondering if anyone else is expecting twins. It's our first pregnancy so we're abit in awe of the thought, but wouldn't it be good to start a thread on twins so we could exchange advice, support etc. Looking forward to hearing from you! x

Oh my god! My brain is fried just from Reading that lot let alone having had to work it out! Big respect!! My sonograpger seemed fairly sure mine were non identical with two sacs and plCentas although he said two girls. Also the fact I had help and made more than 1 egg is the real factor in this though. Knackered today after a weekend of playing with ds and already being a blimp!

Swazzee · 02/08/2010 17:38

Impressed with all the stats! I'm not expecting mine to be identical - twins seem to run in my family (mum's side, dad's side, and husband's dad's side!) and they are almost all boy-girl and therefore non-identical. So if it's a hereditary thing, I'm expecting non-idents.

No probs sassy - take your time! I'm not due til December so no pram buying just yet!!

Hi Ladies, just got back from a fab weekend away, where I was a bridesmaid for my friend's wedding which was lovely x

I'm 21 weeks now, and still fitting in most of my tops, it's only trousers/jeans that don't fit in total I think I've put on a max half a stone but was really sick to begin with. My bump is fairly neat, although I'll probably balloon in the last few months!

smokeybacon · 04/08/2010 12:18

Hello all.

Been away in London with DS1 for a few days so not been on for a while. Having a bit of mummy and son bonding. It made me a bit teary at one point as I figured it could well be the last time for a long time that I get proper quality one to one time with him.

Those stats have sent my head spinning! IMpressive mathematics work ladies.

23+5 today. Two days till they are "viable". A milestone, I think.

My ILs are down today for a few days to help with the DSs whilst I'm at work. I find my FIL very hard work for a large number of reasons that I'm sure I will share with you all in time. Suffice it to say, I would usually drink my way through time with them. I can't do that now so it is going to be a tortuous couple of evenings ahead. They don't drink BTW and also DH has decided to take DS1 camping Thurs and Fri leaving me with them and DS2 on my own. To be fair, he is going with a friend and these two days were pretty much the only ones free for them both before respective holidays. But still.....I would normally stick my head up m y own arse than spend time with my FIL. We have to have a conversation with them about "help" when the twins arrive/latter stages of my pg too. MIL is fine, its FIL who I can't stand so I'm hoping that MIL will volunteer to come on her own. FIL doesn't reallly do babies or helping out with kids. So I'll probably be back later on tearing my hair out....

Hi Ladies, can I join you??

I found out at an early scan last week I am having identical twins. I am currently 7+2 by my dates but 6+1 by scan measurements (which freaked me out a little but Sonographer was not concerned and didn't ask me to go back to the epu). I am completely terrified but over the moon at the same time. I have dd1 (almost 4) but lost dd2 last year at 21 weeks, then had a mmc in Jan this year so to say I am anxious about this high risk pregnancy is an understatement! Because it's so early I am reluctant to ask for advice etc but my head is spinning and mostly I think so what! I am pregnant now with twins so enjoy it!

I am completely and utterly shattered and quite nauseous all day but luckily managing to keep everything down.

I hope you are all having a nice day and I look forward to getting to know you all!

sassy34264 · 04/08/2010 13:31

Hello magic8 Welcome.
7+2 or 6+1 seems such a long time ago for me! I remember all the anxiety! Sorry about your losses. I've never had a mc, but was told there was a bleed between the babies at early scan..... week 5/6. (that was bad enough) It was the worst time- being a nervous crying wreck- until next scan showed it had been reabsorbed. Think you have the right idea to enjoy it.

34+5

(past the time limit for steroid injections now.......woohoo)

Welcome magic8

tabbycat76 · 04/08/2010 15:55

Hi guys - haven't posted on here for a while tho have been keeping up to date with the posts. Impressive stats, but to be honest, they went way WAY over my head! I have struggled enough to concentrate on Bejewelled Blitz over recent weeks so to work out stats like you have?!??!

Anyway, 11+2 today - heading closer to our 'dating' scan tho really I'm looking at it as a nucal scan. Apprehensively excited as I can't wait to see them wriggling again and for my husband to see them, but so hoping that all results come back as low risk. It's a scary time!

My morning sickness has eased up loads now thank goodness, still not 100% but feeling better every day! Whooo! I'm going to ask for one more week by the GP (that'll total 7 weeks off!) just to make sure I am properly right before I head back onto the wards! Times like this I wish I had a sit down office job!

Glad you enjoyed your wedding Lavitabella - we went to a wedding last w.e and as yet we've not told any friends, so when we roled up in the evening.... with my boobs huge and hanging out, and my baby doll dress sitting neatly over my growing bump, it certainly got one friends eyebrow raised! Ha she was hilarious saying all the evidence is stacking up against you, 6 weeks off, huge boobs, no alcohol etc etc. Next time I see friends I'll be revealing our secret, it's too hard not to now esp when we're so close to 12 weeks!

Sorry to hear you're not having a good time with you inlaws Smokey, it's such a shame because you'd think if you marry into the family, you'be liked, respected, supported etc etc. My inlaws divorced years ago - my FIL is fab with a lovely wife who I get on well with. My MIL, well, we're on different planets half the time I think. She's ok, but after almost 3 years of knowing her, still doesnt ask me anything about me, or involve me in anything. Makes it quite hard really to feel accepted. Hey ho. People are strange! Hopefully the next few days will speedy up for you.

Btw, welcome to Magic8 - congratulations. So sorry to hear of your losses but try to enjoy your pregnancy. Twins are a double blessing, there aren't so many members to this elite club, hehe!

Hello magic8. Hope you have an uneventful pg and can stay with us. Sorry to hear about your losses. 21 weeks. I cannot imagine how devastating that must be, even though I've had a few mcs myself. Good luck.

Amberc · 04/08/2010 16:00

Magic8 I can imagine how stressed you are after what you've been through. My sister had two 9 week miscarriages and one twin mc at 20 weeks but has just had a baby boy. She was so anxious throught constantly knickers checking so I feel your pain. Fingers crossed this is all plain sailing for you!

I have a similar in law problem with my mil who we are staying with this weekend god help me. She's so rude and expects my ds to live her immediately even though she has only seen him once in a year and gets annoyed with me when he runs to me not her (she Saudi am taking over!!!). Also not xble to drink through the pain. Hey ho,...

Amberc · 04/08/2010 16:02

iPhone splling mistakes sorry!!!

tabbycat76 · 04/08/2010 16:06

Feel relieved our In laws are all within a relatively short drive away so no chance of any of them staying with us - well, only on my terms anyway when the twins are born! And then it's for a week, one inlaw at a time! Couldn't handle them stopping with us otherwise!! Good luck to you all!

sassy34264 · 04/08/2010 16:22

My DP has just phoned and he is on his way home tonight- 2 days early- to start his 3 weeks off. Had such anxiety that the babies would come while he was away. (not seen him for a month) So, so, so relieved.

Amberc · 04/08/2010 16:54

Not seen him for a month?!! What does he do - is he on a rig or something? How lovely that he's coming home. I would be relieved too!

sassy34264 · 04/08/2010 17:02

He's in the navy. Didn't see him for 6 months last year and the year before. Boo. He comes off his ship in November and has a land posting for 2 years! Yeah. Will still only be back every weekend, but better than being abroad for months.

tabbycat76 · 04/08/2010 17:27

Aw you must be thrilled and so excited sassy that's great news. And well done for holding on to the twinnies before he's home! Remind me, are you planning a vaginal birth or section?

OP posts:
sassy34264 · 04/08/2010 17:36

A section. Had 14 hour labour with DD and than had to have a emergency c-section. She was 9lb 12oz and was stuck.
Babies were measuring really big in this pregnancy a couple of months ago, so they sent me for a GTT and it was positve unfortunately. (So that probably explains the 9lb 12 oz baby!!)
What with having diabetes, already having a c-section and it being twins, decided to just cut out the fuss. If it would have been a singleton i would have tried a VB.

tabbycat76 · 04/08/2010 17:44

Wow sassy 9lbs12oz - no wonder she got stuck! My SIL had a 9lbs 10oz and was thrilled at having had no stitches with her - not sure I'd have bragged quite so much!!!!!! Well good luck for your section, I don't blame you for just going for it and cutting out all the fuss. They can be so relaxing and lovely. I plan to take a CD with me at my section - bit of distraction therapy!! So how many weeks are you having your section at? I've been told you should have it as close to 39 weeks as poss but that sounds like a lot of weight to carry and a lot of back ache to contend with at that gestation for twins.

OP posts:
sassy34264 · 04/08/2010 17:55

Well, the doctors keep telling me they will let me try to get to 38. However they have been telling me since 29 weeks that i will have them early. (Obviously underestimated someone who can carry a 9lb 12oz baby to 42 weeks!)They even wanted to give me steroid injections at 30+. I'm now passed the stage of needing them.
Only problem is, DP is back for 3 weeks holiday and then he is away for a week and then back for 2 weeks paternity. Guess where the 38/39 weeks fall?
So, i need them to come between now and 38 weeks or i need to persuade the docs to book mme in around 37/38. Got a scan and consultant appointment next thursday, so will be discussing it then. When have they told you?

34+5

tabbycat76 · 04/08/2010 18:04

Ah no, way to early to be having that chat just yet with me. I'm 11+2 but I've been told by my midwife a section isn't a problem, theyre my babies and it's my choice. However we're due to move in the next few weeks and I'll be moving my care to a different hospital so I'm hoping they'll be just as amenable. My friend is a midwife tho, and has told me you need to get to at least 39 weeks so that the babies don't have an increased risk of developing wet lung and needing to go to Special Care. I must admit, I thought 38 weeks would be fine but she's seen a few twins go to SCBU for this reason when delievered early. I guess it's because there's two, there's greater the risk, I don't know. It's buggered my plans because I was hoping to go on Mat leave at around 30-32 weeks (preceeded by annual leave) and deliver at around 36 weeks but I'll be guided by what I'm told. So long as I get my section!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
sassy34264 · 04/08/2010 18:17

There has never been any talk of letting me get to 39 weeks and trust me when i say i have never had the pleasure of seeing the same doctor twice. (rolling eyes) In all my appointments (and there have been a lot, plus 2 hospital admissions) i have managed to ascertain that no doctor thinks the same as any other. There seems to be no common consensus. It depends on which doctor you see. For example- I've had one mention booking c-section at the next appointment....it was never mentioned again. One doctor wanted me to have steroid injections there and then (consultant was consulted over the telephone and she said wait a week).....it was never mentioned again by another doctor. Even though babies were measuring big for 2 scans only one doctor made the connection between that and my previous pregnancy and ordered a gtt test. I'm convinced if i would have seen a random other doctor that day- it would never have been mentioned. (I had seen my consultant before this and she didn't mention it.......i've never seen her again.)

tabbycat76 · 04/08/2010 18:31

That's crazy! I know midwifery is a very grey area but still, Registrars should at least be singing from the same hymn sheet esp at the same hospital! Having said that, I do know different Consultants have their own opinions on what they think should be the case so if you see random Registrars who work for differing Consultants then I guess you would get differing opinions. Still mad tho!

Have you not got a date booked then or are you still waiting for that? I'd have thought given your over 34 weeks, they should be thinking about booking you in to avoid too long a section list on one day!

OP posts:
sassy34264 · 04/08/2010 18:36

No, no date set. Only one doctor said they would book one and then i never saw him again. Going to specifically ask for a date next thursday. I hope the babies decide the date though!
