Hi everyone!

My husband and I recently found out on an early dating scan (like, very early, 5+ weeks) that we are expecting twins. We're being re scanned in 2 weeks time to confirm, but I'm wondering if anyone else is expecting twins. It's our first pregnancy so we're abit in awe of the thought, but wouldn't it be good to start a thread on twins so we could exchange advice, support etc. Looking forward to hearing from you! x

Hi LL, of course I remember you! So glad things have settled down a bit for you - last I remember you were having, em, problems with your not at that time DH because he was being somewhat clueless . V glad things are going well!

Hi everyone and welcome to the newbies!

Had a scare this morning - started bleeding this morning which I definitely wasn't expecting as I fast approach 12 weeks - anyway, went for a scan at 2pm and am very relieved to report both heart beats seen and doing well. They're measuring 4cm at the moment, and appeared very active on scan! They couldn't see a cause of the bleeding but I'm much reassured! Phew! Seems these little blighters worry you from day 1 - not from when they're born!!

Re the buggy chats - I found what I thought was a good buggy (sorry can't seem to work out how to give you a link, but it's called the Zoom Twin Buggy System - it's the best i've seen as a slim line buggy which i really like to be able to get through shop doors on my own, but since then, I've checked out the one mentioned previously (Tako pram) and love it! But can it get through single doors?!?! And also, does it cater for toddlers or would you need to get a push chair later on? Lovin' it tho and may well go for it! Hmm, now to convince my hubby!

Hope everyones well x

swazzee I would say they would be ok instead of moses baskets. Just tried to bend the bottoms and couldn't. I would say they are probably not as soft as a moses basket but you could put a blanket on the bottom. Only problem I can forsee is that they do look quite slim. Whether that's just me thinking babies are chunkier than they are cos i had a 9lb 12oz baby last time........ i don't know.
I've bought 2 cots but i'm planning on putting them both in together- next to each other- for first few months (if possible). So I think they will be snug enough without buying moses baskets. But if they won't settle i would consider using the carry cots.

tabby The seats lift up from the pram postion to a sitting position for an older baby. Don't know how long they would fit in though. I'd guess at about 2, maybe 3. Tried to look on website but can't see an age range anywhere.

I emailed the company that despatch the pram before i bought it and asked them if i could send it back if it wasn't to my taste, because i had been unable to see it first and they said no problem. They didn't say it was free, but they didn't say it would cost me either. The email address is on the link.

Oh Tabby how frightening. I was also on the AC thread (but nobody remembers me!) and actually I had a bleed I thought was my period which wasn't at all (clearly). I then had another one at about 8 weeks (dark brown, turning to red) but it went away thankfully. Been OK since. Glad to hear everything is OK.

Sassy - I saw a website which said it was £65 to send back a pushchair so beware everyone who is buying from t'internet just in case (make sure you ask first!!).

jjkm - I am at you not needing mat clothes yet. I hope the sickness abates soon and you can have a slap up feed to chub up a bit!

London lottie, was it really hard work to BF the twins?

Tabby and Sassy I love the look of the Tako pram. Showed it to hubby last night and he was very impressed. The price is also amazing for what you get and how sturdy it looks - aren't those iCandy ones over £600 or more?

Even if the carrycots only last a couple of months, that's still ok - at least it gives us time to find a cot or two (and a big enough flat to put them in...!)

Sassy how is it fitting through doors? Can you measure the widest part for us? (From a comment on the website, it looked like the wheels were the widest bit). We have a small corridor from our front door to the living room and I'm worried I literally won't be able to get it in and out of the flat!

smokeybacon · 30/07/2010 16:30

tabby hope you are ok after your scare. I've had a number of mcs so know how frightening bleeding can be, but its quite common for it to mean nothing. Glad you managed to get a scan quickly for reassurance. Take it easy though.

I can't decide if to BF or not. I tried with DS1 and 2 and it was a bit of a non starter. With both despite best efforts, both of them lost an alarmning amount of weight in the first few days. DS2 and I had to be readmitted as he was dehydrated. I tried so hard to get it going, feeding constantly and expressing too, but it never really got my supply going. So with 2 of em, and with 2 others to contend with too, I just don't know how it will work. I've got the doula booked so I think she will be a support for BF but I think we will see how it goes.

Hi everyone! A lot of posts to catch up on!! Keep looking at the Turbo buggy that sassy recommended - absolutely love it! Showed it to my mum a while ago and in true Yorkshire mother style said, ah, you need to go to the shops first to test drive them, then I have to make sure the wheels aren't likely to get punctures, and then if I'm happy, look online to get a cheaper bargain!!! What a phaff! Anyway, as it turns out she did find me one online for almost half the price with all the bumpf that goes with it! Sorry sassy! I think it was Ebay that she found it and different colours too, but also I think they were older models but pretty much the same style. Think I'm hooked on it!

As for breast feeding - I'm undecided. One minute I think yes give it a go, next I think, well if I bottle feed then I'll be able to have help. What i thought about doing was trying to breastfeed in hospital, and express too to help the milk come in, and then at home, perservere with expressing if breast feeding doesn't work out. At least they'll have had some of my milk then but who knows what I'll do come the time.

Before I forget has anyone been to Asda to shop in the baby products sale?!? £5 for 6 packs of baby wipes and less than a tenner for 100 nappies?!??! I think I'm going to go and start spreading the cost of baby products so we're not spending a fortune nearer the time. Bargain prices too!

Bleeding seems to have stopped today, only been a little on wiping today so feel much happier about that. The scan tho was amazing, both were wriggling so much - amazing to think I have two 4cm length babies wriggling inside and a. I can't feel them and b. I don't really have that much of a gut to show for them! They should be 5cm come 11weeks (Monday). 12 week scan on 11th so can not wait for that!!!

By the way, what are peoples thoughts about splitting up their twins when needing babysitters?? I've had offers from family to babysit and i've been so surprised that anyone would offer to take them both (since double the work) but my mum says to split them up so they get quality time away from each other. I'm not sure I like the idea of splitting them up - almost as bad as my MIL suggesting we split them up at birth to sleep in different rooms!!!!!!!!!!! My jaw just dropped to the floor in shock. So what are peoples thoughts on this?

Ah very good advice londonlottie - may well have to adopt that advice! Thanks

Amberc · 30/07/2010 21:23

I don't really know what to think about splitting up the babies. I think I would rather they were together but then I suppose what harm would it do? Still, we have no babysitters to help out so it's a bit of a moot point. We also will have three not just two so more likely be to split the older one from the twins.

I am going to try and BF. I couldn't do it with DS -a combination of him not cooperating at all and me having badly designed feeding equipment! I will have help in the hospital and I have hired a maternity nanny for a few weeks who is a lactation advisor so can't ask for more. If it doesn't work out I won't beat myself up about it.

Oh poor you jjkm - 14 weeks and still ill!? I'm keeping everything crossed that I'll be feeling better come 12 weeks. How long have you been off workk for?? What with my bleed the other day and still not feeling 100% I've been advised to take off at least up until 12 weeks! Feel incredibly guilty towards work but as other NHS staff have said, it'll tick over without you, and once you're there, they'll expect you to work as hard as everyone else for the duration of the shift. I guess I'm destined to have 7 weeks or so off during this pregnancy Thank goodness it doesn't affect my sick pay! Hope you start feeling slightly better soon. Get lots of rest and keep to the plain carbs - that seemed to help me loads in the first few weeks.

jjkm Trust me to be!
Maybe i'm wrong, but i thought the statistics for fraternal twins would be 50% boy/girl 25% boy/boy and 25% girl/girl?

I worked on the basis of:
1st twin
50% chance of boy
50% chance of girl

2nd twin
50% chance of boy
50% chance of girl

So you could have:
1st twin=boy 2nd twin =boy
1st twin =boy 2nd twin=girl
1st twin=girl 2nd twin=boy
1st twin=girl 2nd twin=girl

As you can see there is a 2 in 4 chance of boy/girl =50%

Does this make sense?

sassy34264 · 01/08/2010 21:32

swazzee Not ignoring your request to measure pram! Just lodging at my mums at the minute because my house which we bought in March is still being gutted. Everything in bags and mum is away, so can't ask where hers is! Will post as soon as i find one.

Sorry jjkm just realised that you have done the statistics for fraternal AND identical.

If the starting point for fraternal is 2/3 as you say, the boy/girl being 1/3 is 50% and boy/boy and girl/girl each being 1/6 does work out as 25% as well.

Hey look at that, my brain is still in there somewhere!!!
