anyone else expecting twins?!?!?

Hi everyone!

My husband and I recently found out on an early dating scan (like, very early, 5+ weeks) that we are expecting twins. We're being re scanned in 2 weeks time to confirm, but I'm wondering if anyone else is expecting twins. It's our first pregnancy so we're abit in awe of the thought, but wouldn't it be good to start a thread on twins so we could exchange advice, support etc. Looking forward to hearing from you! x

Hello everyone. May I join in? I am 12+1 with non-identical twins, which were conceived as a result of ICSI in August. We're so delighted to be having them as we've struggled for almost 3 years to conceive, and I have secretly always rather dreamed of having twins! So although I guess it's a big shock to a lot of people, I was just thrilled to get the news a few weeks ago and so far not too daunted by the logistics.

Now we have had the 12-week scan and gone public I can stop being so superstitious and start thinking about everything we need to do - have so many questions about the practicalities and what to expect that I think this will be a good place to be! Hopefully Amber and Penguin will vouch for my good character as we know each other from the Assisted Conception thread!

Here are my details for the rollcall:

So can I join, can I?!

Blimey Lottie - they are £££ but gorgeous! What about in a pushchair - can you get the harness on?

jjkm i am a few days ahead of you and I also have bought nothing. Think I'm going to wait until 30 weeks like last time. I got a list from my maternity nanny that we've hired ( specialised in multiples) which I can forward you if you want. You'll need to give me your email address though.

Jenzopos · 16/10/2010 00:21

I would really recommend your local freecycle as well as ebay and charity shops...major bargins to be found! I got 2 cots for 26 pounds plus 3 boxes of clothes for 30 pounds via ebay, as well as 2 rocking seats for a fraction of the new price in mint condition.

Nearly new NCT sales are well worth a visit too!

I'd say minimum you probably need:
1 cot plus bedding
2 car seats
pram/buggy
nappies in advance (I've bought size 1)and wipes
changing mat
enough vests and babygros to last you a day or two
some cardigans
something warm if you want to take them out
room thermometer
some muslin squares
some bibs
some socks and scratch mitts
bottles and steriliser if you don't want to breastfeed

any other essentials i have missed?

I'm 34 weeks and got almost everything (in-laws are buying the pram so not got that yet but plan to get a red nipper 360.
I'd advise not waiting till 30 weeks you would be surprised how tough it gets physically .. you will probably be bigger than singleton full term size by then!

Swazzee · 18/10/2010 10:33

Hi all

Baby shower at the weekend was great. It is quite an American thing I know, and I probably never would have bothered with it myself, but my friend is Canadian and she organised it. I would definitely recommend it though as it was great to get presents and catch up with friends I don't see often enough. We didn't play any games though - just sat and chatted and ate cake (the heartburn I had that night nearly put me off eating for good, mind!)

As a result, I now have quite a lot of the stuff I need for the early days, and haven't actually bought anything myself yet! Going to send DH to Sainsburys for nappies later, as I feel the time is approaching to have them ready. There are so many types and sizes - Jenz do I need to tell him to get Size 1 then? I have no idea of the options! Perhaps I should go with him.... He has form for not reading packets and just picking stuff up based on the pictures, bless Smile

I'm also going to plump for the Nipper 360 I think, although in navy rather than red. This is the cheapest place I've seen it - Practical Pushchairs although I know nothing about the company, I think I'll take a punt.

Amberc · 18/10/2010 11:07

I am so almost decided on the nipper but still loving the mountain buggy's double pram attachment!!

Get size 1 swazzee or even the micro ones for preemies.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 18/10/2010 11:07

Ooo those Cocoons look nice!

I like your list Jenzopo. What about a baby monitor?

Swazze a friend of mine who had baby recently has recommended the Huggies Newborn Size 1 from 4lbs. Her almost 5 year old is also using them for her dolls as they are really teeny (and MUCH cheaper than doll disposables!).

Have bought a few bits when I am out, stocking up as I go as I remember how tough it got towards the end when I was duffed up with DD1. Am going to the baby show on Sat as DH got free tickets so will have a nose at the buggies.

Threw a baby shower for Magic8sis yesterday and had a lovely time. Some of her mates popped over and we just had tea and cake and gossiped. Only played one silly game which everyone enjoyed and had a good giggle at :)

Welcome Cerubina! Congratulations!

Jenzopos · 18/10/2010 15:14

thanks magic8ballhastheanswers I have got a monitor but forgot to put it on the list :)

swazee I've gone for size 1 as they are for 4-11lb (as twins tend to be smaller averaging at 5.5lb) whereas size 2 is 7lb+

my in-laws are getting it form this shop.. www.oxfordpramcentre.co.uk/product_Nipper-360-Double_783_0_index.php

it's mazing how much the price varies from shop to shop!

getting fed up now, got a throat infection and severe reflux! I'm too big! (35 weeks tomorrow and counting)

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 18/10/2010 17:10

I love the Nipper but it will be so impractical for me : ( It's got to be a tandem.

I ordered a dreamgeni pillow which came today so I hope that will help with a good nights sleep tonight, I tend to have one good night, one bad night....

Get well soon Jenzopos not long now! I am 18 weeks tomorrow and have AGES left!!!!!! 19 weeks to go!

jenzopos and swazze I wonder which of us will be first to produce???? My braxton hicks are increasing and am getting light period type pain a lot, but this happened for about 4 to 5 weeks before DS2 so I don't think it means anything is imminent, and my plug is still in place too!!

magic I have a dreamgenii and I love it. It has made sleeping a lot easier. But I wish something would help with the pressure on my bladder at night.

So DH went out on Friday at lunchtime. Came back at 7pm (lightweight) absoultely bladdered. If anything had happened, he certainly wouldn't have been in any fit state to come with me. Thankfully nothing happened and I'll put it down to his last blow out and rack up some brownie points for later on Wink.

Amberc · 18/10/2010 21:17

jjkm you wont need the booster seats for ages! And a tip from me from my last baby was that bath supports are better than baby baths as you can go hands free. Lastly I think bouncy chairs are supposed to be a lifesaver if you would ever consider them. It's just somewhere to put the babies down where they can see you and are a bit upright. I recommend swaddling blankets too. Made a massive difference to my DS and his sleeping when he was a newborn. You can get ones with velcro now to help fasten them otherwise they tend to fall open therefore defeating the object!

Amberc · 18/10/2010 21:18

PS I bought a load of stuff from Jojo Maman Bebe today and used my Tamba discount. I saved just under £40 which has completely paid for the membership!

Jenzopos · 18/10/2010 23:49

I did get a baby bath...five quid form ikea... bargain!

I feel the pain of the indigestion...doc has said i can double my omeprazole dose, so fingers crossed it helps!

holidays2010 · 19/10/2010 07:41

I've been feeling "bruised" in the groin area of late, like you had Smokey..
But I'm only 18weeks, didnt think I'd get this till later.

My leg pinches are back...like a nerve keeps getting caught in my thigh or something, really annoying. Plus I think the night time leg cramps are starting, managed to avoid two last night Hmm
Anyone got any tips for helping reduce leg aches and pains?

Cant wait for my 20 week scan, just to be reassured everything is ok and get a picture. Do you know if I'll have to pay the fee twice because it's two?
I'm thinking of dragging DH along, I know he secretly would like to see! :o

And for those of you ready to drop I've read you shouldnt stand for more than 1hr... :)

Hope you're all well!

Amberc · 19/10/2010 09:09

Are you not getting an NHS scan then holiday in which case it's free no matter how many babies you have!

My only tip for leg aches etc is memory foam beds. Quite an expense though!! I had terrible hip pains last pregnancy and now I have a new mattress they are nowhere near as bad

Swazzee · 19/10/2010 09:52

Standing for 1 hour Holidays!! Not sure I would have been capable of standing for 1 hr for most of the pregnancy!!

I too had a bruised feeling in my groin - turned out to be SPD, which thankfully has been quite mild and doesn't really last for more than a day at a time. But my GP did check for other things when I went to see her about it - one of the things she mentioned it might be was a water infection. Worth going to see a doc if it's bad. I had the pain in my thighs too - got DH to massage them which helped a bit (once I'd managed to persuade him he wasn't actually kneading dough and to calm it down a bit!). Oh, and also he put a folded up blanket under the sheet to make the bed softer (or a memory foam mattress or topper would be better if you have the ££!)

In work now for my final week, but cannot wait until Friday.

Smokey - the race is on!!

Jenzopos · 19/10/2010 11:05

holidays it depends on the hospital I think...I only had to pay once for pictures (and that is NHS)

Cerubina · 19/10/2010 12:24

Hope everyone's well. Got a few questions for you all if that's OK.

I am at the very end of my first trimester now and still dog tired most of the time. Have you all found that the surge of energy in the second trimester actually did materialise, or not? I am hoping so or it will be a real struggle to get anything done! But equally can imagine that perhaps twin pregnancies are going to be less energetic all round.

Also, my nipples are really sore. I'm still able to fit my normal bras despite breasts getting noticeably bigger and fuller, but the bras all seem to rub my poor nips like crazy and I am wondering whether going for a new size will cure that. Any tips?

Those lists of stuff to buy for the babies will definitely come in handy I think. It's just completely baffling to someone with no experience trying to work out what we might need!

Final question - I've enquired about NCT classes for multiples and was wondering whether any of you did those and thought they were a better idea than the standard classes.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 19/10/2010 13:31

Hey Cerubina I started to get my energy back at about 16 weeks :) (Subject to fairly good nights sleep where I am not awake too much with heartburn, peeing or just generally unbloodycomfortable!)

As for your nips, might be time to change the over the shoulder boulder holders! I just got some plain cottony lycra jobbies from JoJoMam (with tamba discount applied!) and am so much more comfortable as I literally cannot bare lace etc on my skin - I am just so itchy and sensitive! Is it just me??

Can't really help about the NCT classes. Tamba offer some and I know some of the ladies on here have been so hopefully they will be able to answer your question.

Have a great last week at work Swazzee!
