Hi everyone!

My husband and I recently found out on an early dating scan (like, very early, 5+ weeks) that we are expecting twins. We're being re scanned in 2 weeks time to confirm, but I'm wondering if anyone else is expecting twins. It's our first pregnancy so we're abit in awe of the thought, but wouldn't it be good to start a thread on twins so we could exchange advice, support etc. Looking forward to hearing from you! x

sassy good work with J and I's weight. That is fab. You must be doing well with the feeding. I shed a wee tear when I had to put DS2s first batch of clothes away. It does go so quick.

strawberrylace · 30/09/2010 21:11

Wow Sassy - that's brilliantg weight gain for your two (lovely names by the way)

Tabby - keeping my fingers crossed that your consultant sees things your way....

holidays2010 · 01/10/2010 07:55

I'm hoping for a natural birth, not sure how I'd cope after a C-section looking after two babies..
Plus they say the babies benefit through natural birth. Something to do with their immune system and passing the vaginal wall or something...I forget... :P

tabbycat76 · 01/10/2010 10:39

Yeah they do holidays - much better for a vaginal delivery because their little lungs get squeezed on the way out so dispelling all the gunk in their system which if not removed makes them really mucousy and sicky once born. But for me, a caesarain would be my first choice (only with twins I might add). Just hate the thought of potential problems with the second twin and having an emergency section. My husband bless him hates hospitals so if this will be our only pregnancy, then I'd like it calming and relaxed with our choice of music playing in theatre etc etc. You can make it really nice. Re recovery, I have both mums helping out for a week each, and my husband will be off for 4-6 weeks so I'm not too concerned about that. But everyones different in their opinions and I think Consultants should appreciate that fact.

My husband has started sleeping on the spare bed and sleep has vastly improved for us both...he was feeling cramped whit all the pillows and constant being woken up by me shuffling pillows! I'm now sleeping for 4 hours straight as I have a whole double bed to myself so much easier to get comfy without waking!

I'm definitely after a normal birth, don't like the idea of being cut open (and its own set of complications and risks)or the idea of looking after 2 babies after major surgery! (hope babies have turned but not sure how to tell really)

holidays2010 · 02/10/2010 19:46

I think for those with alot of support can consider C-section, but if I have a C-section I'd probably end up begging the hospital to keep me in for extra days just so I can recover! :P
I can only hope I'll pass off a complication-free natural birth but I know I'll have sleepless nights as I get closer to my due date over it :(

Right now though my main concern is affording xmas and my DD's upcoming birthday!
My DH is due for an interview for a new job so if all goes well he should bring in a lot more money than his current job so keeping my fingers cross!

Hope everyone else is well.

Jenzopos · 02/10/2010 20:47

you cant stay in hospital for 6 weeks or more...which is how long it can take to recover!

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 03/10/2010 10:28

Sorry not posted for ages, having new kitchen fitted and all sorts of DIY dramas.

Had scan last week (just coming up for 16 weeks now) and all was fine in twinsville. Tabby I have an anterior placenta too, have been feeling movements for a couple of weeks but it explains why they are not increasing. At least it will cushion some of the blows!!

Will be back to catch up properly soon.

tabbycat76 · 03/10/2010 10:56

Haha, anyone who in their right mind wanting to stay in hospital for 6 weeks to recover..... ha, madness but could you imagine if that ever happened?!?!? I'm planning on staying for three days. I should imagine they'd normally kick you out at 2 days after a section or 1 day with a normal delivery but I think with twins they'd be a bit more lenient. Three days sounds good to me by which time, my milk should be in, and my family will swarm to our family nest.

Got our 20 weeks scan Friday, can't wait! My kicks are pretty full on now - and my god do they wriggle! No more bubble sensations, more full on kicks. Amazing! I'm sure I've got nocturnal creatures in here tho - hmm, will have to get them out of that pattern quick sharp! ;)

Anterior placentas should mask some movements Magic but I'm not convinced!!!

Has anyones' appetite suddenly increased??? I'm finding that over the past few days I'm needing a second breakfast and snacking! I was never like this before so can only imagine my babes are piling on the weight and asking for double portions!!!!!

OP posts:
smokeybacon · 03/10/2010 11:36

tabby yes my appetite increased around the 20 week mark but only during the day. I was needing to eat breakfast and then another breakfast around 10.30/11, and then lunch and then another snack around 5 ish. Funnily enough, by dinnertime, I didn't want anything to eat. And that state of affairs has continued. I am having to force myself to have dinner now, but can quite happily munch away particularly in the mornings.

I am officially now fed up with being pregnant.

Jenzopos · 03/10/2010 13:11

I'm always hungry..and now the babies are so big my stomach is squashed so cant eat enough to satisfy the hunger!

Getting really uncomfy and fed up now (nearly 33 weeks). Developed carpal tunnel and have bad pressure on my pelvis. Feel so big and struggling to get anything done!

I keep reminding my self I don't have long left!

holidays2010 · 03/10/2010 19:03

I heard for C-section they keep you in for 5 days (at least they did in my last hospital), but it's not 'wanting' to stay there, I was simply saying if I had a C-section I would probably be better off in hospital than home - coping with twins, surgery and a 4yo!

MamaMojito · 03/10/2010 20:56

Jenzopos and Smokey I feel your pain, 30 weeks on Tuesday and I've been feeling it a lot more this week, so I can only imagine how you guys are feeling being further on. Carpal tunnel is driving me potty!

I had a section with DS, he was born early hours of Sunday and we came home on Friday morning, but that was because he spent most of the week in SCBU because of low blood sugars, very common in term/overdue boys apparently.

Wishing us all a good week this week, lots of sleep, no pains, ability to eat as much as we like when we like, no heartburn Grin

holidays2010 · 04/10/2010 10:44

My heartburn seems to have reduced and I managed to sleep all night without getting up for the loo....because I held it in. It's annoying how small my bladder has become!
Apart from that all is well, but then at 16 weeks I guess I still have it all to come! :o

Amberc · 04/10/2010 21:09

Hi everyone - I feel like I've been away forever! Had a lovely holiday at the in laws in Spain but got caught in the Spanish strikes and had to stay an extra 4 days as all the flights were cancelled!

I haven't tried to catch up on everything but it all sounds like we're progressing well. I am 23 weeks now and on Saturday I am going for a 3d scan which I'm excited about.

I am having the same probs as the rest of you with sleeping - uncomfy, heartburn and peeing. I wake up almost every hour and it's a killer tryng to look after my 2 year old as well.

My consultant said I am as big as someone with a singleton at 32 weeks - I feel it. Back ache and SPD have struck. I am 99% certain of a section but it is horrid trying to recover. I was in for 4 days with the last one. I was private though and had nice food, a nice room with a telly etc. Can't imagine I'll get that treatment at the NHS hospital this time!

Amberc · 04/10/2010 21:11

PS - I joined TAMBA and you get some good discounts 10% at Mothercare for a start so by spending £300 at Mothercare you will pay for the membership via the discount

Jenzopos · 05/10/2010 10:50

just to add to the pile I think I've developed pep on some of my stretch marks....so itchy but cant scratch as it's sore!

Had a day out shopping yesterday thanks to the loan of a mobility scooter..did not get so worn out and could move at normal walking speed!

tabbycat76 · 05/10/2010 16:58

Glad you had a lovely holiday amberc - nice to have you back!

What's pep jenzopos?? Never heard of it. How many weeks are you now? I'm keeping all crossed that I don't suffer too much with stretch marks - slathering on the coco butter but not sure that'll prevent them!

Am considering joining TAMBA too - when I get bit bigger and further along I think I will.

What are peoples thoughts on baby monitors and if you've bought one which one have you got and why did you go for it? I've been recommended the BT150 but it's £60!!!!!! My husband doesn't think we need one as "they never had one in the old days!" but I'll be getting one for piece of mind!

Three days and counting till our 20 week scan - soooo excited but nervous too!

I meant pupp..its a itchy rash, usually starting on stretch marks that can spread

Swazzee · 06/10/2010 11:07

Hi everyone

Had my 32 week scan yesterday and everything was fine. They're each a bit under 4lb, which I'm told would be average for singletons, so they're quite happy with the growth. Twin 1 unfortunately has now turned breech, but they did look quite cute with their little heads next to each other - like they were having a nice chat.

The consultant said it was too early to decide about CS or VB, but that if Twin 1 doesn't turn it will need to be CS (but there is still time and room for him to do so). He said we would discuss it at the 36 week scan and appointment.

So til 36 weeks I have no appointments with anyone, as the GP said to come back at 36 too. Seems a long time to go without appointments at this late stage, but everything has been so normal - even when I go to appointments, no one seems to have much to say to me!

Going to pop along to an antenatal class on Saturday morning. They don't require booking thankfully, as I'd done nothing about getting sorted for them. DH won't come - hope I won't be the only one there on my own...

BTW I found an excellent solution to heartburn last night. Tesco limited edition chocolate orange milk. Mmmmmm. Tastes good and soothes heartburn! And 2 for £2....

nevercansaygoodbye · 06/10/2010 17:31

hi - can i join? just found out today after a traumatic couple of weeks that we are pg with monochrionic twins. they are measuring very small for dates so we are very worried, but having been told to expect to miscarry in the past week to see two heartbeats is amazing and astounding...
my story is here - first post and then second-last post explaining
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/miscarriage/1050102-mmc-let-it-happen-naturally-or-not-what

Jenzopos · 07/10/2010 06:24

Welcome nevercansaygoodbye

Fingers crossed your little ones are ok! Sometimes dates are not entirely accurate as they can only predict from lmp based on a 28 day cycle, with ovulation on day 14 (most women have variations on this!)

nevercansaygoodbye · 07/10/2010 07:41

thanks jenzopos - we basically were told at the last two scans that there were no heartbeat or embryo visible so to be shown two heartbeats is pretty crazy. fingers crossed is right! Does anyone know if twin embryos are smaller than singletons?

Jenzopos · 07/10/2010 10:49

twins grow at the same rate as singletons generally until about 32 weeks, then it slows down a bit (they average about 5.5 1lbs as oppose to 7lb I think.

Amberc · 07/10/2010 13:39

nevercan saygoodbye - I hope everything goes well for you!

I have booked a private gestational diabetes test as the one I have been offered is 3 weeks away! It's 89 quid but at least I can rule it out. Been feeling awful - really dizzy. Fingers crossed it's nothing and just part and parcel of not sleeping and having a giant bump!

Swazzee - I thought you had one every two weeks at that stage?
