Hi everyone!

My husband and I recently found out on an early dating scan (like, very early, 5+ weeks) that we are expecting twins. We're being re scanned in 2 weeks time to confirm, but I'm wondering if anyone else is expecting twins. It's our first pregnancy so we're abit in awe of the thought, but wouldn't it be good to start a thread on twins so we could exchange advice, support etc. Looking forward to hearing from you! x

jjkm You doctor will give you a prescription for industrial strength Gaviscon, I was going through a bottle a week at one time.

smokeybacon · 22/09/2010 09:16

Morning all,

DS1 has gone to school, DS2 nursery so its all quiet here. More sleep for me in a bit!

So CC going ok. First night not too bad at all. Last night he cried for an hour with DH and I going in and patting (or cuddling in my case) amd then leaving. At 5am, just as I was thinking, 5 more minutes, he fell asleep and slept till 7.30am. A record! So I think we are making progress.

You are all scaring me with talk of formula, nappies and moses baskets!! Here I am at 30+4 and still nothing except the buggy bought. Hospital bag not ready either. I just don't know what to put in it. If the babies came now they would be in special care so wouldn't need anything. So that leaves me, and all my pjs and stuff, I still kind of need. I suppose I could get some maternity pads and cheapy knickers from Asda ( soooooooo much better than disposable pants).

Anyway, formula wise we used cow and gate with DS1 and 2 with no problems. The choice was based on what our Boots stocked and Aptimil is more expensive. I understand that there is no difference between the brands really anyway.

Bottles, its avent. Again cos its what our local Boots had so I could get the teats easily.

Nappies we have used Nature Boy and Girl that are mostly biodegradable. I couldn't do the whole cloth nappy thing and did have a tinge of guilt about the disposables effect on the environment. Will prob use them again with the twins.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 22/09/2010 09:16

Amberc I like the travel cot idea.

Nappies - whatever is on special! You go through so many when they are little.

Have always used avent bottles and never had any problems, glad of the "on special" bottle tip Holidays

DD had aptamil after I stopped BF. SMA made her really sick :(

jjkm Rennie Ice is good and a few people have suggested the fruit flavoured rennie too.....not sure if you can get these on prescription.

Must make a dental appointment now I have my exemption card :)

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 22/09/2010 09:18

Well done with the CC Smokey and enjoy the peace this morning : )

holidays2010 · 22/09/2010 09:47

Thanks for all the input girls, guess nappy-wise I'll just buy the lot! :o

I'm waiting until I can claim for the maternity grant before I buy a cot and pram because those are just too expensive. I really need to get a car too and my DH keeps looking at me (and mentally saying) "You didnt think this through properly" :o
But how did I know I was going to have twins!!
Anyway I'm still excited by it all as well as scared!

Swazzee · 22/09/2010 10:28

I haven't got an exemption card for the dentist. I keep meaning to make an appointment (and not getting round to it) but I figured I would just tell them I was pregnant and to give it to me free.... Do I need proof other than my gigantic tum?

Baby Nest is a good suggestion Magic. Not been there yet as it's on Purley Way and I don't have a car so tend not to go to the out of town places, but I've checked and there's a bus that goes close by so may pop over at the weekend.

Nothing to add about nappies or bottles I'm afraid - totally clueless as these will be my first. I was just going to buy whatever nappies I have coupons for! (And yes Magic you spotted why my first clothes purchase was from Sainsburys - my coupon runs out the end of September!)

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 22/09/2010 10:39

Its just your NHS exemption card, but you have to go to an NHS dentist. They will probably ask for your card as I think they will need your exemption number :)

Good luck with Baby Nest - there is another shop in Orpington too I think.

Swazzee · 22/09/2010 10:39

And I definitely back up Holidays suggestion of milk for indigestion/heartburn. I've been getting it really bad, but a glass of milk cures it completely and I've never needed Gaviscon or any of the other remedies. Just sip it slowly.

Swazzee · 22/09/2010 10:41

I've not been given an NHS exemption card - I don't even know what that is. Has everyone else got one?

Lavitabellissima · 22/09/2010 11:09

Swazzee mine arrived 5 days after my first doctors appointment, when I was 5/6 weeks pregnant. You need to call your doctor as they must of forgotten you, you won't be able to claim dentists or prescriptions without it.

smokeybacon · 22/09/2010 16:07

swazzee your MW or GP should either have given you a form to send off or sent it off for you, but you then get back a magic white card that exempts you from NHS charges for the year after your due date.

Swazzee · 22/09/2010 17:00

Ah, she definitely sent off the form - I remember it. But I didn't get anything in the post afterwards. Will call them tomorrow and see if they can send it again or something. Either it's lost in the post or DH chucked it in the bin not realising it was important.....

Another vote for Gaviscon here - I swear by it - HB goe about 30 seconds after having it.

I had my consultant app yesterday and I tested positive again for glucose (for the second time). They told me to come in again today for another test which I did and again it's positive. Not looking good. Now I do have to have the proper test and the MW siad it was likley I had Gestational Diabetes. Crap. Anyway I'm off on my hols now so I will see you all in a week x

Re the travel cot idea - that's the way we've decided to go. A friend of mine who's just had a baby used a travel cot when we met up one evening. It's fab. It doubles up as a play pen for when they're older. And the cot part is raised within it so you don't have to bend down so far to reach in. Easily fits two and hers was 10 weeks at the time. It's currently on sale at £40 when normally £100!

www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productdisplayA_42_10751_-1_14562_86266_10001_14053

Bargain. We're going to keep that downstairs and have the cot upstairs which they'll share until we NEED to get another or at least decide what to do about cots. But still, for £40 it buys you time and really are great for w.e's away!

Re formula milks, as an ex midwife, we always said one milk is as good as any other, it just comes down to personal preference.

No leaking boobs yet. Is anyone elses husband not going near them now 'just incase' they leak??!??! We're 18+ at the mo so think it's a little early to worry about on his part!!!!

We're sticking to reusable nappies I'm afraid so can't help you there!

Thanks girls, sorry to hear that Amberc, my midwife said she wanted to test me for diabetes because my last baby was so big.. ?!
I havent heard or spoken to my midwife since I first met her...I need her to sign my form for free veg/milk vouchers and I guess I better ask about the exemption card too because I havent heard anything about that either...

I already have a play pen from my first but maybe the travel cot is a better idea...I'll look into that one.

I bought the Tommee Tippee bottles (6) for £9.99 in Argos today, I was a little worried they'd sell out before the offer ends at the end of this month. It's my first baby purchase but if DH takes me to Asda today I might buy some nappies too just so it's another thing I can tick off the list. :o

holidays2010 · 24/09/2010 09:04

Morning girls, my little one is ill again, just 4 days since her last one and now she's back with coughs and everything. :(

Also, tabbycat76, there was a space in that link so here, I redid it for you :)

53

It should work now.

Lavitabellissima · 24/09/2010 12:21

Thanks Tabby & Holidays - lots of good stuff on that website like bumper packs of muslins. I also wanted to buy a baby monitor and they are good prices.

I ordered the nursery last night, feel like I am finally getting organised!

I only have roughly 7 and a half weeks!!!!

Is everyone planning on breast feeding? I told the midwife I wanted to and she just said "good luck"

I have been a bit miserable this past week as I have an ear infection, but I've finally been given antibiotics and starting to feel slightly better. Hope you are all ok Smile

smokeybacon · 25/09/2010 08:01

Morning all.

Up earlish with DS2 this morning. But the CC seems to be working. As he is staying (or rather we are able to leave him) in his cot all night. This morning though he woke at 5.50am chatting and singing so that was it. Managed to keep him quiet with a bottle for 30 mins, but I've been up with him now since 6.30ish. DH was out last night so am giving him a bit of a lie in.

lavita I have about 7 weeks to go too. It all seems a bit close now but still its not spurring me into action, ie hospital bag and sorting nursery. Are you having trouble sleeping too? I have had 2 rotten nights and I think its because I seem to have grown quite a lot in the last week and am now even more uncomfortable than I was before. Thank god for my dreamgenie pillow. Hope your ear infection clears up quickly.

tabby I met with my doula yesterday and she suggested the travel cot thing that you mentionned!

SHe also suggested some sort of changing station downstairs otherwise we'd be running up and down stairs to change nappies all the time.

DH went out last night without his phone. His mate then texted me to say if I went into labour to call him ( he has twins himself this friend) and it suddenly hit me that, yes, I suppose it could happen anytime now. I'm 31 weeks now. Scary.

holidays2010 · 25/09/2010 09:26

I plan to bf but will buy some formula just in case. I want to buy an electric breast pump but they are expensive - are they worth it?
I bought a manual with my first which ended up being a waste of time because I could only express a little myself.
They say the electric pumps mimic babys sucking motion so it should work alot better right?

tabbycat76 · 25/09/2010 10:56

Morning all!

The husband has gone out for the morning and has left me to my own devices - ahhhh, bliss!!

Anyway, yeah were going to order that travel cot very soon, but there delivery appears to be the next day so I have to time it with when I'm off work so I can be in for the delivery. Haven't looked much else on that website but if they do bumper packs of muslins I may well order more!

Having just moved, we're trying to get all sorted and unpacked at the mo... thankfully the previous owners had a nursery in neutral colours much to our pleasure so it's just a case of furniture now. We've put up the wardrobe and I'll be picking the cot up from my sis-in-law soon so it'll be taking shape. Getting excited and I still have 5 months ish to go!!

As for feeding, I plan to breast feed mine tho Lavita, your midwife sounds supportive with her 'good luck' comment on your wanting to breast feed!!!!! Maybe don't go to her for help!!!

However, I'm not going to become neurotic about it if it doesn't seem to be working. In my experience of midwifery, manual breast pumps are rubbish, electric ones are better, but better still is to do it manually. They'll show you how easy it is in hospital if you ask and you get sooooooo much more milk off. It must feel so rewarding for women to see their milk being expressed! All you need is a sterile receptor dish to catch the milk in, and of course your hands!!!! And it'll take less time too because you physically stimulate the whole of your breast inc the nipple whereas the pumps only stimulate the nipple and your milk ducts are in your breast tissue so hand expressing works better for those reasons.

Had a scare yesterday at work. Had shooting abdo pains during the beginning of my shift. They were really sharp and took my breathe away a bit. I had them the day before and wondered if I'd done too much at home but when I was at work I hadn't even done anything yet. Anyway, took myself off to the antenatal clinic and got checked over, two heart beats heard thankfully, but they couldn't give me a cause. Maybe with twins your muscles grow and stretch that much more you feel more twinges etc but being my first pregnancy, it's all a bit scary. Midwifes appt next weds tho and 20 week scan wekk after so I'm well seen in the next couple of weeks!!

Hope everyone else is ok. Have a fab w.e!!

Holidays I'm planning on hiring an electric pump to express, I need to have a search and see where to get one.

Smokey I'd be lost without my dream genii too, but I'm sleeping very lightly and going to the loo quite a bit!

Tabby Hope you are feeling better, I was always getting weird twinges, lots of growing to do. Try not to worry.

I have my Tamba antenatal class tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes Smile

sassy34264 · 26/09/2010 11:50

Hi everyone. I'm bfing exclusively. I had the 'good luck' and 'you might not be able to' etc. But I deliberately didn't buy any bottles or formula, so i had no choice in the matter.

I told the MW in hospital that i was determined and the only thing to make me give up, was if my nipple fell off. She said she had ever belief that if that happened i would go to her and say 'sew it back on'! (had a hard time in hospital cos they were premature and had a very weak suck and they reckoned nearly everyone would have given up by day 2)

I would say the downsides are, you are marooned with the babies. As i feed on demand and they don't always feed at the same time, the most you can go out for without the babies with you is about an hour. (i've made a few trips to Tesco just to get a break!) Also, when they are hungry at the same time, one can be screaming while the other is feeding (i can tandem feed but it is hard to do with positioning and Isobel doesn't latch on has good in that position and it really hurts my nipple afterwards) But the worst is when they are completely out of sink and one wants feeding at 12am, 3am, 6am and the other is in the 11am, 2am, 5am routine. But that doesn't happen often.

I plan on buying a electric pump and think i'm going to get the Medela one. It has two pumps so you can do them at the same time.
