Hi everyone!

My husband and I recently found out on an early dating scan (like, very early, 5+ weeks) that we are expecting twins. We're being re scanned in 2 weeks time to confirm, but I'm wondering if anyone else is expecting twins. It's our first pregnancy so we're abit in awe of the thought, but wouldn't it be good to start a thread on twins so we could exchange advice, support etc. Looking forward to hearing from you! x

Welcome thingamajig!! I stopped puking at 4.5 months but you get used to it Smile

Swazzee I'm Cornish too Grin Grin although have lived in London now for nearly 7 years! Going home next weekend though, and really miss it Smile

Swazzee · 20/08/2010 16:22

Wow Lavita. So many Cornish maids on this thread!! I've lived in London for 6 years and dying to move back down south.

BTW, if any of you wants to check out my blog about being pregnant with twins, feel free. Its called Eating for 3. Be great to get some comments on there from people having the same sort of experiences.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 20/08/2010 16:45

Hi thingamajig, full sympathy with the sickness. Mine is worse late afternoon/evening and is just about kicking in now Confused

Swazzee ooo love a blog will have a look :)

Booked in today :) They told me elective c-section 37 weeks for Monochorionic. Is anyone hoping for a delivery via the usual exit?

AxisofEvil · 20/08/2010 16:58

Hi all, I'm 21 weeks with ID twins. The bad news is that they have developed twin to twin transfusion syndrome although currently it is reasonably mild and is being monitored weekly. I've also been told that if they can hold it off from getting worse that they will deliver them at 34 weeks which doesn't thrill me with joy.

It took us a long time to concieve so to be honest it feels very unfair and I'm finding it hard to be optimistic about their prospects at the moment as the stats are pretty crappy.

thingamajig · 20/08/2010 20:39

Hi again, thanks for the lovely welcome. I'm nearly 10 weeks, so with a bit of luck the sickness might ease soon, but I'm not holding my breath.
Its good to see some other Cornish people here; I'm from "up country", but have lived here 3 years now, dh was born here. We are near Looe on the South Coast.

AoE, sorry to hear yours have twin to twin transfusion, I must admit this terrifies me. What do they do about it? Lots of monitoring? I hope it stays mild for you.

Lavitabellissima · 21/08/2010 08:53

Welcome Axis

I have friends my age (30) who are identical twins and back in the day, they didn't do any extra monitoring. They had TTS and it was only diagnosed once born and they are both healthy and beautiful.

Put your faith and confidence in the doctors, as scary as this is, they know what they are doing and there's a lot they can do to help. I'm sure your little ones will be fine. Big hug being sent your way Smile

Magic8 I've been told elective at 36 weeks but I am happy about that, much safer, consultant there throughout and only 1 sore exit. Such a high percentage of natural twin birth end in c section anyway, as one twin turns after you get the 1st one out. Sun roof it is for me!

You don't have to have a c section though, I'm sure if you really want a vaginal birth they'll let you have one.

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 21/08/2010 13:14

Hi Axis welcome, just echoing what Lavita says really about the drs. Chin up and keep positive for your LOs x

Had normal delivery with DD1 but I am happy with whatever they say as I know it will be safest option! As much as I would have liked to try Hmm I am really not that bothered and it's easier when you don't have to choose!

Hi all! I'm expecting non id girls in November.
I had terrible sickness till about 11 weeks but otherwise feeling good...if not a little large already! Its my first and I still don't think its entirely hit me yet!

tabbycat76 · 22/08/2010 09:54

Hi everyone. Needing a little reassurance today please. Every week since 11 weeks I've taken photos on my mobile from a side view of my belly so I can see a natural progress of my babies growth. I'll be 14 weeks tomorrow and I just couldn't wait until tomorrow so i took my photos today (the amount of change from 12-13 weeks was amazing). The photos today show relatively no change at all. Couple with the fact that I have an infection down below, I've got a bit worried. I've been prone to BV before I fell pregnant and I've wondered if I've got it again (tho have been irresponsible by not getting it checked out). I've just looked on the net and it says it can affect pregnancy by way of prem birth, prem rupture of membranes, low birth weight and miscarriage!!! You see why I'm worried? I'm back to work tomorrow so will book a GP appt for afterwards in the afternoon, but do you think the midwife can take swabs or should the GP and has anybody else suffered with this? Just worried my lil babes aren't growing because of it, possibly because I've lost them?!?! Probably being neurotic. :(

jackinthebump · 22/08/2010 12:12

Hi Tabby

Don't know much about the rest of it but don't worry too much over the growth thing, I'm 15-5 now and although I have changed to maternity trousers for the expanding waistline still not showing yet! Getting very impatient as I'm sure people just think I'm getting a bit fat! Difficult as everyone on here is saying they are showing and have little bumps already - even those with one! If you are really worried about this infection call NHS direct and ask them for their advice?

You should be due a scan at 16 weeks with twins? Only thing keeping me from going insane until mine next week is thinking well I still feel rough so must be a good sign!

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 22/08/2010 13:43

jjkm try not to worry although I know it is hard. Have you got a scan coming up? If not why don't you go back to your GP and demand one!

Welcome Jenzopos feel free to add your details to our list which is down below!

Tabby I doubt this has anything to do with your bump growth as this can change depending on where the babes are laying or if you have wind so try not to panic (but as I said to jjkm I know it is hard!)! I know a little about BV because my consultant specialises in infection (BV in particular) and I know they are going to test me for this. Do you have an out of hours surgery?

tabbycat76 · 22/08/2010 15:09

Thanks guys, I'm trying not to worry but I guess I'm just a born worrier! We don't have an out of hours service but I'll be making a GP appt in the morning for tomorrow afternoon. BV is funny in that it can self clear, I'm wondering if mine might have done as not getting as many symptoms now but will still get checked out. Peace of mind and all.

JINTB a scan at 16weeks?!??! I wish! I was just saying to my husband earlier, it's a long time to go without a scan between 12 and 20 weeks, and I've another 6 weeks to go! I wish i did have another scan inbetween that time as it'd certainly reassure me.

For those of you that have had private scans, how had you gone about arranging them and how much roughly do they cost? I'm considering getting one to tide me over until 20 weeks.

Welcome to the newbies to the thread. This thread is getting longer with new members constantly, loving it! More advice and support to share! :)

JJKM - agree with magic8, demand a scan. Any bleeding in pregnancy isn't normal. It's enough to make you worry so get it checked. When I had bleeding at 10 weeks, they said to come in at any time in the future if I bled, that's what they're there for to reassure so don't worry about putting people out, that's their job!

OP posts:
jackinthebump · 22/08/2010 15:21

Tabby - have you been moved from midwife led care to consultant led? When we found out we were having twins they transferred me straight away and booked me in for a 16 week growth scan. I am told that I should have a scan every 4 weeks until 28 weeks due to possible complications with twins and then every 2 weeks after 28. Obviously this may change depending on the consultant but I have another scan next Friday to check on everything!

Worth double checking?!

Lavitabellissima · 22/08/2010 20:37

Tabby Hope you are feeling better, I would second what Jackinthe bump is saying, I have a scan every 2 weeks as my twins are identical but was told if they were non identical I would of had a scan every 3/4 weeks. You shouldn't be waiting until 20 weeks!

jjkm hope you are feeling better too, and I aslo second asking for a reassurrance scan, I'm sure everything is ok though, some people bleed throughout their pregnancy's without any other problems Smile

Welcome Jenzopos Smile

I am feeling exhausted, have this week at work and then a week in Cornwall. I can't wait, when is everyone expecting to finish work?

Swazzee · 23/08/2010 15:31

Can't keep track now of newbies and oldies, so hi again or welcome - whichever suits!

As for all this scanning talk, I found out I was having twins at my 13 weeks scan and didn't have another one until 22 weeks. (Yes, I was going out of my mind waiting!) And at that first scan they booked me in for scans every 4 weeks from 28 onwards. So I don't think it's that unusual not to get one at 16 weeks. In fact, the only appointment I had between 13 and 22 weeks was a 16 week check up with my midwife where nothing much was said or done. I suspect the frequency of scans has a lot to do with whether they are MC or DC and MA or DA....

Just to add a new question to the mix, is anyone else's stomach cold to the touch? DH keeps telling me off for not keeping it warm enough (specially at night when I throw off the duvet cos I'm sweating loads!), but I'm pretty sure it won't have any effect on the babies inside! Anyone else get this?

Swazzee · 23/08/2010 15:34

Oh and Lavita I'm intending my last day at work to be at 34+1 weeks. Can't wait - less than 9 weeks to go!!

Amberc · 23/08/2010 16:59

HI everyone - a quick one as I have a stinking cold and feel awful. Tabby get a private scan - local ones are about £100 but London ones can be anything (I got one for £240 in Harley St!!). I don't have an automatic 16 week scan. Mine were 12, 20 then 28, 32 and 36. You only really have more when they are ID twins as more chance of complications I think.

Swazzee - yes my tummy is cold too!!

My bump at 17.3 is fecking enormous so if you have a small bump try and be pleased as I am already in a physio belt and an elastic bump belt thingy just to get through the day Sad

tabbycat76 · 23/08/2010 17:34

Talking of the size of bumps - I freaked myself out looking on google images pregnany women bumps with twin pregnancies! OMG! They are pendulous, thin skinned, veiny, stretch marky! Why do we do it to ourselves girls?!??! Oh and another thing, a colleague at work today asked me if we'd insured against twins!!! I told her I didn't have a clue what she was talking about (ex midwife as well!!!) and she said if twins run in your family, you can insure against having twins and then if you DO end up pregnant with twins they pay up!!! I have never heard anything like this before, but blow me if I've missed something and a big pay out at that!!!!!! HAs anyone heard of this???

Cold belly's?? Nope, not here. Very warm to the touch and loving the growth of my bump - god it makes me so proud! :)

As for scans, yeah I can't decide now whether to enquire about another scan. I should imagine it's just their policy. I have a consultant appt at 17 weeks so I guess I'll learn then what the plan will be for me and my scans. It's a long old wait tho till 20 weeks so I may well look into private scans. £100 seems a bit pricey amberc tho being private, maybe its a longer scan than an NHS one?!

jackinthebump - they've known I was twins from 7+ weeks and I was told then I'd be under consultant led care but no mention at all about scans other than the nucal at 12 weeks. Hmm... to phone or not to phone EPAU!

jackinthebump · 23/08/2010 19:10

I have indeed heard of twin insurance! My Dad suggested he and my mum got it when she fell pregnant with me (and my sis) but mum said don't be silly, we won't have twins! Ha! Problem is, when you are a twin the premium is extortionate! And if you have twins in the family I believe it is also high! To be honest I don't think the cost of the insurance premiums is that good in comparison to the pay out - too late now anyway!

Amberc · 23/08/2010 20:58

Tabby - £100 was the lowest amount I found a scan for! I'm not sure you will find one cheaper and no they are no different to NHS ones but you'll get a bigger TV to watch it on and softer bog roll in the toilets.

JJKM Glad everything went ok with your scan Smile

I have such bad insomnia, and have been going to sleep in the spare room as I just toss and turn all night but we have relatives staying with us for 2 weeks from tonight. So I'm back in my own bed.

Scan on Friday then a week off work, I can't wait!

Hope you are all ok ladies, I wonder how Sassy is getting on with her beautiful twins?

Amberc · 24/08/2010 09:32

jjkm - good news on the scan - still scary though when you get bleeding.

Lavita - sympathies - I am suffering too - also got such a bad cough when I'm not awake with insonia or my hips hurting I'm coughing my head offf!

Swazzee · 24/08/2010 12:19

Haha, twin insurance! I always thought it was one of those jokes people made when you told them you were expecting twins, but then I googled it after reading all your comments and it really does exist!! I was astounded! Wish I'd done it, specially since my DH correctly predicted twins from the moment I told him I was pregnant!

JJKM, glad all is good.

Tabby I agree £100 is a lot to pay for a scan unless you really needed the piece of mind. Like I said before I managed to wait from 13 to 22 weeks for my second one and I was fine. Scans early one (like before 20/28 weeks) are really only necessary if you think there's a problem, and if that was the case you would probably get an emergency NHS one anyway.

I have insomnia too, but luckily DH is fasting for Ramadan at the moment, so he's up most of the night and sleeping during the day anyway, so at least I've got someone to talk to!
