Right, I've done the honours. This is our new thread.

And don't forget the stats thread

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
squistle · 24/06/2010 13:08

My mumsnet books arrived yesterday so I have been reading my way through the first 'pregnancy' one. It's so good hearing what real people have been through and not all that textbook stuff. Great advice for first timers like me too!

My morning sickness has stopped but still got the overwhelming tiredness. Other than that things seem pretty good. Iron tablets gave me a 'surprise' when I went to the bathroom the other day but that seems to have settled down too!

Has anyone started to buy any stuff yet? I was wondering if it might be good to get some of the big stuff like the cot and carseat now, spread the cost a little bit too.

SpangleMaker · 24/06/2010 13:32

I'm struggling to keep up yet again!

Persnickety hope your CVS goes well tomorrow. When do you get the results?

Lavitabella 5 stone, wow I'm sure you won't necessarily put on that amount though I'll bet you have an impressive bump towards the end. BTW DS was born at 35+3 and was absolutely fine apart from some jaundice (which is common in term babies too) - he didn't spend any time in special care.

NickiSue aww sorting through baby clothes is one of the best parts of pregnancy. Having said I wouldn't be getting any pink stuff just yet, SIL gave me a bag full of clothes from one of her friends who was having a clearout. I couldn't wait to get them home and sort through

Re hospital choice another thing to consider is where they would transfer baby/you in the event of the baby needing specialist care, if they don't have it at your hospital of choice. We have two hospitals equidistant from home, one has a slightly better reputation for natural birth (what I wanted) & better post-natal care, but no specialist neo-natal facilities, and if my baby was transferred they would go up to Manchester (40 miles away). The other hospital has its own neo-natal intensive care unit & is 10 miles from home. Makes me sound like a pessimist I know, but it was just something I wanted to feel comfortable about.

Oh, and time a drive to the hospital in rush hour. Fortunately I was already in hospital when i went into labour in the middle of morning rush hour but it took DH an hour to get there and he nearly missed the birth (he did actually know how long it would take but didn't see the need to hurry ).

Hope everyone is enjoying the lovely weather.

WhatWillSantaBring · 24/06/2010 13:39

Spanglemaker thanks for that also - keep these top tips for questions to ask coming please!

On special care units, I'm a big supporter of them and of having them in the hospital you're born in, as my life was saved at birth by three consultants and an excellent special care unit!! For me that is why I'd never choose a HB (not that I'm judging anyone else, just knowing what's right for me) - total paranoia on my part, I know, but i guess first hand experience of these things makes you more wary!

(PS first meeting finished early - whoop whoop! )

MrsSnaplegs · 24/06/2010 13:46

OK I think I am going mad - please help!!

I think I just got kicked - I am 16 weeks tomorrow and this isn't my first so I do know what it feels like but surely it's too early for a kick!!

I was sat in a low comfy chair in my boss's office - went to shift round to get more comfy and it definately felt as if there was a protest kick/arm!

Anyone else out there had anything similar yet??

Persnickety · 24/06/2010 14:21

Thank you, Spangle. I can't wait for it to be over. Initial results take three days and then more I think take a couple of weeks. Downs should be in the initial results so I'm hoping to know by mid next week. It seems like I've aged 10 years, gone grey, and then bald since my nuchal. But, really, it's been a week and a half and none of those things have happened.

And, DF, your amnio is... Monday? Or is it Tuesday?

Another hospital tip of mine is to bring ear plugs in case you sleep next to someone who prefers to let her baby cry through the night. And also bring your mobile phone charger so you don't have to use that horrifically over priced phone system they have hanging over the bed... ESPECIALLY if you have international callers.

Oh, and arrange your own snacks/meals to be smuggled in because even nice NHS hospitals have horrible food.

Will have a proper read and catch up later, must get tea on.

OnlyWantsOne · 24/06/2010 18:13

Mrssnaplegs I am feeling regular movements, Im 17+ weeks with my second.

Wow... doesnt seem real writing that, 17 weeks

started off feeling little swirly movements, now for sure some kicks / pushey feelings, when I sit quietly and relax my tummy feels alive

I really am thinking its a boy

Going for my scan on July 15th - then I will have my next MW appt at 24 weeks.

Hope you are all well..

Pers my mum had an amnio with me (she was 42 when she had me) and I have the scan photo of me as a 24 week feotus holding the amnio needle

japhrimel · 24/06/2010 18:18

aimee0211 - I posted on your thread without realising it was your thread. Doh! Sorry if bits of what I posted aren't relevant, I didn't wade through the previous posts before posting.

WhatWillSantaBring - yes I find some of the threads horrific. I'm trying not to get involved...had a bit of a fight on the goats cheese thread though. At least on Mumsnet, if you think someone is being stupid/dangerous/silly, you can say so. I used to be on another forum and got fed up of not being allowed to say anything to anyone in case they got upset - I once got told of for responding "is this a joke?" to a post asking if anyone had bought fertility tarot kits off ebay to help them conceive.

squistle - we're not buying anything big until after the 20 week scan. I nearly caved when I saw the Mothercare sale but DH pointed out that as we haven't cleared the 3rd bedroom yet, there's no where for any of it to go yet. I'm hoping Mothercare might have another sale in the autumn so I can go mad knowing I'm saving hundreds of pounds! It's got me galvanised to start clearing the room though, so hopefully by September, it'll be clear and decorated!

SpangleMaker - the time it can take to get to hospital in rush hour is one of the reasons we're considering a home birth. We know a blue light ambulance can get there in under 20 minutes, but if there's a crash in rush hour (a frequent occurence on the M4!), driving yourself can take up to 2 hours! I am not happy at the idea of being in full established labour trapped in a car for anything near that long.

A few other questions to consider asking:

Re hospital births... If you would like one, how many birthing pools does the hospital have? Many just have one, so if you get there and someone is using it, it's tough. Also, if the pool is being used, will they let you labour at least in a bath?

  • Do they have birthing rooms where you can have an active labour (e.g. stay upright and move or use a ball or whatever you want) and stay in one private place for the duration of labour. Labouring on your back tends to make labour slower and more painful.

  • Could you have the option of a mobile epidural, so you can stay reasonably upright even if you want an epidural?

  • What's the hospital policy on feeding and formula?

Re home births... What's the home birth rate in your area (an indicator of how experienced the midwives will be with home birth)? The English national average is just under 3% so my area's 5% average is actually high.

  • Are they experienced with water births?

  • How many many midwives are there on duty at night or on weekends?

  • What's the set-up for bad weather? Our midwives have 4x4s available but apparently they get a bit nervous if they're needed as the ambulances aren't 4x4! I really hope we don't have a snowy/icy December again.

  • Can you get pethidine at home and who prescribes it? If it's the GP that prescribes it, it can be harder to get than if the midwives can bring it from the hospital.

  • When will they support a home birth? If I'm under the PCT hospital (which we're now going for), my area will support a home birth from 37-42 weeks and are not against a monitor and see policy from 42-43 weeks, although they'd be pushing induction at that stage. Some areas only support from 37 or 38 weeks and up to 41 weeks.

I'll post if I think of any more if they're of help.

I saw the physio this morning about my hips & SPD and she really reassured me that I'll be able to do something to stabilise this. I've got a list of exercises, the go ahead to go back to doing my old pilates DVD (with specific advice on which bits to avoid, yay!) and have been told to start swimming asap. Also was told that if it doesn't really hurt to do something, I won't be making anything worse, so will stop panicking!

OnlyWantsOne · 24/06/2010 19:10

maxpower · 24/06/2010 19:29

Hi. I'm possibly the most tired I've ever been in my entire life today. My eyes were actually closing in the middle of a phone call at work today - there was nothing I could do to keep them open. I was desperate to have a day off but everyone else in my office has booked time off until I go on hols (only 3 weeks time but feels like months away). Grr.

likethemapples · 24/06/2010 20:37

hello everyone, hope you're all well?

I'm 16+4 today and think I'm starting to feel some movement. It can't all be wind, can it? I'm also waking up with my calves feeling like plump sausages and my feet seem to be swelling up slightly during the day.

Thanks for the suggestion of questions japhrimel - really useful. My sister has just leant me Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and even though I'm planning on a hospital birth in a home-from-home centre it's making me realise there are quite a few things I need to ask about.

Wholelottalove · 24/06/2010 20:48

Hi All.

aimee just posted on your other thread. Hope you're feeling ok.

maxpower sounds like a tough day. Hope you get a decent night's sleep and feel better tomorrow.

japhrimel hmm, I've been doing some reading on Group B Strep and there are risks with the antibiotics too, so it is difficult. Having read of the very serious complications which can occur if (tiny chance) the baby does get Group B, DH is very strongly pushing for labour in hospital with the antibiotics if I test positive at 36 weeks. It's a decision we obviously have to make together, but I am leaning towards that too as well currently. I've spoken with my doula who has given me some great info and been really encourgaing. As she says, there is no reason why I can't have a good birth in hospital too. Hopefully I will be negative by then anyway so it will be fine. It's a good reminder to me to plan but not get too hung up on one particular type of birth.

Mrssnaplegs I've been feeling my baby and I'm only 14+6. I felt DD early too though, at about 15 weeks and it definitely was her even though lots of books and people said it wasn't possible. So yep, if you think it is and especially if not your first, then it is! I'm not feeling the baby every day yet, just once in a while but it is a dinstinctive twitching feeling.

persnickety good luck for tomorrow.

I feel a bit better today, mood better and not quite so knackered. Managed a full day at work and to be reasonably productive for once!

DH has just offered me the last magnum

CherylAnnTweedy · 24/06/2010 21:08

Hi it's RaceyLacey, I have my new celebratory name .

I'm sorry, but finding it totally impossible to keep up, let alone catch up. I have no idea where the day goes.

I'm currently eating a stale roll bought from the co-op earlier. Baked fresh every day my arse! (and this one does have an onsite bakery.)

Aimee, will go and have a look at your thread.

MrsSnaplegs · 24/06/2010 22:36

all I can say is wow to those that have asked all those questions of your mw already. moved mid pg first time and obviously doing same this time so haven't currently got a mw officially! in fact last time moved so late in pg didn't see local mw or hospital until waters broke! still managed birthing pool for most of labour but not particularly enjoyable experience all round - maybe this time will be better.

Lavitabella · 24/06/2010 22:36

chezza like the new name!

Aimee, I didn't post on your thread, but have been thinking about you all afternoon. I hope everything works out for you and you make the decision that you, and only you wants to make. Big hug to you x

Maxpower I had the same sort of day too, slept on and off all day and was supposed to work from 3-cl tonight. Went in and came home again before 6pm. Thought we were supposed to be blooming

Persnickety good luck for tomorrow!

MrsSnaplegs this is my first pregnancy and am only 15+3 but am sure Ive had fluttery feelings lovely, makes it all feel real.

Anyone else got any holidays planned? I'm off to Italy in a week and can't wait. Jealous of everyone at Glasto

OnlyWantsOne · 25/06/2010 07:54

urgh.... I have such a sore throat.

My poor DD's throat infection is now mine

japhrimel · 25/06/2010 08:10

Lavitabella - we're booked to go to the South of France in September and I can't wait. Just crossing my fingers that BA don't strike then as we're booked with them using airmiles. We'd probably still go even if we had to go by train but as I'll be quite big by then we're treating ourselves to club flights (airmiles are wonderful!) and a lovely hotel the night before we fly out.

OnlyWantsOne · 25/06/2010 08:17

Japhrimel that sounds lovely.

DP and I were supposed be training it with DD (3) to S.France but they estate agents moved our moving date to three days beforer we were meant to go... so we're not!!!!
Have a fabby time though x

Persnickety · 25/06/2010 09:08

Aimee, how are you today?

Thanks, Lavita, for the good wishes. Today is also our anniversary and I think DH is a bit disappointed that my thoughts are elsewhere. Poor DH. Oh well, will be over soon. I'll check in later (probably tonight) to let you all know how it went.

Hope everyone has a lovely day.

OP posts:
CherylAnnTweedy · 25/06/2010 09:12

Best of luck for today Persnickety & happy anniversary to you & DH.

japhrimel · 25/06/2010 09:16

Best of luck Persnickety!

Is anyone else ffinding that they're getting really hot and uncomfortable at night just because their bump is getting too warm? I slept with the windows open & the covers off last night and woke up with my shoulders and feet freezing but the bump uncomfortably warm. Doesn't help that I need to cuddle a big pillow to get comfortable but it's getting ridiculous how much the bump temperature is stopping me sleep!

Angelgirl79 · 25/06/2010 09:32

Not posted for a while. Good luck today persnickety - thinking of you x
