Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
lizzie9442 · 25/05/2010 13:42

hi everyone and congrats on all the new arrivals!

Just after some advice really. With all 3 of my previous pregnancies I have not bled for longer than a week after giving birth and the heavy bit only lasted a few days. This time however 17 days after having my baby I'm still bleeding quite heavily. Today I find I am in quite a bit of pain with it and feels really heavy down there. I wondered if this is normal or if i should ring the doctor? thanks for any advice xx

homebirthmummy4 · 25/05/2010 13:48

rachel thanks for the birth story. i am sorry the midwives were a little less than positive after the event. it sounds to me you were amazing (my second baby was an 11lb homebirth and i got some negative comments too) its not as though you knew eric was going to be that size! i know you said you probably wont have another in your story but it doesnt necessarily follow that your next will be large, my no 3 was smallest so far and this one (now 5 days over grr) well, we are all guessing, dd2 is adamant it is not allowed to be big as it is her claim to fame lol. anyway, enjoy your precious little one, just as a little tip, my 11lber got chafed 'kneepits' if you know what i mean from being so big and in heat, if this happens lie him over your knees on his tummy to allow as much air as possible to get at the area. best wishes x

pigleychez · 25/05/2010 13:55

Squirtsmum- Glad you are both ok after all that. Your DP sounds lovely.

Pamlet- Enjoy it! Lucy is currently the same and we too are wondering if its too good to last! She settles herself perfectly and nigthtime feeds are a breeze... lay her back down and shes back in the land of nod! I remember being downstairs, rocking DD in her bouncer or swing trying to get her back off.
Long may it continue and we just have very relaxed babies

Lucky- Congratulations No matter how he came hes here now

Ali- at DS... it must seem forever for them.- Let alone us!

Firstbump- fingers crossed its kicking off for you

Booboo- Sorry to hear you had a bad appointment. See what the scan says later before worrying too much.. she may be wrong.
My friend was told her baby was breech but the scan revealed otherwise!

Rachel- Fab story, sound like you did really well Cant belive the size though! Super speedy!

Lizzie- Certainly do call the MW if your worried. Cant help personally as mine is dying off now at 10 days.

Ventured to Toddlers today. DH came too which DD loved. Lucy had lots of cuddles with the other mummies.
Shes been a little piggy today and scoffing non stop! Christened Daddys leg too by projectile pooing and weeing over him during a change last night

Bit cooler today so hope you ladies in waiting are feeling a tad more comfortable.

FB update from Hollyoaks- Had a little girl Grace Annabel

Gils · 25/05/2010 15:25

Hi all

Congrats to all the new arrivals. Amazed at some of the birth stories on here.

All of you who are overdue, you have my sympathies. Thats both my DD's born in early hours of my 11th day overdue.

Melissa is settling in well. My right boob has taken a battering and is absolute agony. Had 2 very trying nights with her. She feeds well during day and settles brilliantly but night time is different story.

Sunday night she was feeding from 11 to 4 and last night I feed her at 8, hour on boob, then went for half hour sleep then back up again and that was her until 5 this morning. I m obviously shattered and boobs are agony. She nodded of a couple of times on the boob but as soon as nipple came out mouth or put her in her crib she would be awake screaming again. Surely there is no way a baby can need that much milk! Sent DH out to tesco this morning to get a dummy. DD never had one but needed to do something. Boobs couldn't take anymore. Hoping not to have many more nights like this. Right boob has went from toe curling pain to "I want to scream" and left now becoming very painful with all the feeding.

I'd welcome any advice from our bf gurus! Only manged couple days with DD and really want to be able to do it this time but if I am still having nights like this once DH is back working away I am worried it won't last

pamelat · 25/05/2010 15:44

Gils I am a bit confused by contradictory advise.

Alex will feed and feed in the day (and the first couple of nights but fortunately ok now) and MW said to get a dummy. However on the feeding forum on mumsnet, advice is to with it and that the dummy will reduce milk supply etc.

Instinct tells me the dummy is ok for Alex thought

pamelat · 25/05/2010 15:45

oops "advice"

Nimk · 25/05/2010 15:57

Hi this is NimKs DH. We just had a Baby Girl 6.89lbs. Both are doing Great. They whole experience was wonderful.

Born on 25 May 2010 in Melbourne Australia..

When she's upto it, she will post her story.

cupcakefairy · 25/05/2010 16:16

Hello ladies

booboo so sorry to hear about the possible breech baby I know another lovely lady on MN who had the exact same situation a couple of weeks ago after 2 natural births; I'll see if she has a minute to pop on here with some advice for you try not to be too disheartened.. your baby getting here safely (for both of you) is the most important thing.

rachel amazing birth story!! So interesting. And I think you are very justified in being miffed at the MWs; it wasn't your fault at all that it ended up being risky! Massive congrats on getting through that you should totally be proud of yourself and not being made to feel bad!

Thanks for the update on hollyoaks, pigley, though I am muchly that she has had hers early!

Gils does your local hospital have an infant feeding counsellor? Ours has an amazing one (who also happens to be a personal friend of ours ) who would spend time working on latch etc...might be worth asking if there's anyone who can come out to your house. Really hope you can stick out the feeding and get through the pain barrier.

james and myfirst- yaaay, really hope this is the day for you both!

My midwife appointment went ok. Baby now 1/5th engaged, no wonder my pelvis feels so pressured! She's booked me for a sweep on Saturday morning, eek. Really hope I don't get to then!

OP posts:
booboomonster · 25/05/2010 16:45

Rachel wow great story - how annoying that the midwives were so negative after the event - I would say you were a total hero! It definately sounds as though the midwife who attended the birth was trying to cover her back. Irritating though - but apart from having your chat/ debrief at some point which sounds a good idea, best just to chalk it up to experience. You did it and you have a lovely baby! Well done!!

As for me - pigley your advice was very sound - after this mornings appointment I had myself down as having a c section, but the scan revealed baby was NOT breech! Hurrah. It is back to back though - but the scanner lady thought that could change at any point, if not whilst I went into labour. She thinks it is going to be big - estimating 9lbs 3oz at the moment, and I?m due tomorrow. This meant she had to go and have a word with the doctor to see if I am still ok for the midwife led unit. Luckily she/he didn?t seem overly concerned, so thank goodness we are back to where we were before I went to see midwife this morning! Now I just need to do some exercises to encourage the baby to turn from back to back. And start doing some epic walking to get things going. But it?s a great relief!

lizzie - I?m afraid I can?t remember how long the bleeding carried on for? can you ask a midwife or health visitor - or maybe someone else on here would know. 17 days doesn?t sound excessive to me, but I just can?t recall?.

Nimk congratulations!
And Hollyoaks wow you have beaten me to it!!

Gils/Pamelat I did breastfeed DD but again - just can?t remember the details - I do remember it was quite painful for the first few days but found lanisoh helpful, and after a few days it subsided and then, apart from the general swelling and leaking problems, the nipple was fine (still used lots of lanisoh though) We didn?t use a dummy - I don?t think I realised that they could be used to calm sucky babies - I suppose I just kept feeding? though DD was a snacker so she?d have ten minutes on then ten off etc etc etc?. and she sucked her thumb. good luck!

booboomonster · 25/05/2010 16:49

cupcake crossed posts - thanks for the sympathy - and Thank God that it's not the case. I did look on here to see if anyone had posted about late breech, but couldn't find much. It's obviously not that common - but possible!

booboomonster · 25/05/2010 16:50

and good luck for going pre sweep! I have now got a sweep booked for next wednesday (week tomorrow) but don't fancy it, definately will be trying to get things going before then! labour vibes coming your way!

cupcakefairy · 25/05/2010 19:28

That's great news booboo you must be so relieved
I know, I'm really hoping not to get to the sweep on Saturday but by then I'd be climbing the walls & happy to try anything I think!

Dh and I have had a crisis of faith about our chosen names today & I'm suddenly panicking we'll have an unnamed baby for ages I hope when we see it we'll just know what to call it!

OP posts:
AliMouse · 25/05/2010 19:31

booboomonster did yoga with my last two pregnancies and there were several ladies there in your position whose babies turned after doing these positions at home:

Got this from yoga.about.com/od/prenatalyoga/a/thirdtrimester_2.htm

"Third Trimester Adaptations: At around 36 weeks, you are advised to decrease the number of inversions. The baby is moving into the birth position at this time, so you don?t want to do any poses that may alter his or her position in a negative way. You should stop doing Legs Up the Wall and Bridge Pose, unless your baby is breech, in which case these poses can help her to turn. Poses done on all fours are also good for turning a breech baby."

I guess anything is worth a try. Babies can turn at the last moment too.

I am due tomorrow to so I will think of you. Best of luck (and a CS isn't the end of the world - I've had both and you still get a wonderful baby at the end of it, just hold onto that)!

memorylapse · 25/05/2010 19:56

Gils...have you checked that LO is latched on properly?? that can cause painful, sore nipples..if thats all ok, definitely try lanisoh..most newborns love to comfort suck so its probably not all for feeding..mind you a newborns tummy is tiny..and can only hold a couple of ounces of milk..so I guess thats why they feed so frequently..

Rachel..lovely birth story..dont understand the after birth negativity from the midwives as considering you gave birth to an 11 pound baby..Id say you did brilliantly...they do however get a little freaked out by shoulder dystocia..I had it with DS2 and ended up with a 3rd degree tear and pelvic damage as they literally wrenched him from me...

however,,not only do I have serious respect for you popping out an 11 pounder..but DTD with THAT bump! I now worship at the shrine of Rachel!!!

pigleychez · 25/05/2010 20:01

Gils- No BF advice here... I seem to have failed miserably twice

NimK- Congratulations Look forward to your story when you get the time

Cupcake- Hope you dont get to sat.

Booboo- Glad your scan went well. That hard lump at the top can be hard to distinguish between bum and head. Good news you can still use the MLU too. Bet thats a weight off your shoulders tonight.
Re back to back- Both mine have been Back to back labours... My body must be more comfy in that postion.

Been abit of a momentous afternoon here today!
We had our first dinner out tonight as a family of four. Felt odd asking for a table for four! Was lovely even though Lucy did sleep the whole way through it!

Then this evening during DD's bath, DH noticed she was looking like she needed a poo, so suggested she do it on the potty rather than in the bath which she did!
Freaked out when she saw what she had done but with praise and reassurance thats what was meant to happen she was fine. Have promised to buy her some Peppa pig Big girl pants tomorrow now and will put them over her nappy for now as im not ready to push the potty training right now , just take it slowly.

Hope everyone is well and overdue mummies not too pissed off

AliMouse · 25/05/2010 20:02

booboomonster just read your post - ignore the one I put up earlier. I bet you are relieved!

Rachel well done to you!

Let's hope these overdue ladies are finally in the throes of labour or are holding their babies.

My due date tomorrow, so it's highly unlikely I'll go into labour!!

first1 · 25/05/2010 20:29

Apologies for the me post, but need to keep an eye on dinner cooking...

Went to DAU today because of reduced movement. Was put on the CTG for 1.5hrs and after some wriggling on my part and cold water baby woke up. Good trace, no decels. BUT..two midwives both told me I was contracting and I swear I couldnt feel a thing. They said they were mild, peaks around the 30-40% mark on the CTG and rather irregular so got sent home. But why am I not feeling them? What if they get more intense and I still havent got a clue?!

pigleychez · 25/05/2010 21:03

first- I had that with my first... When i was monitored before being induced DH and i could see the prinout from the machine and see these peaks but didnt have a clue what they were. Any MW pointed them out and asked if i could feel them. Which i didnt at all.

When labour really kick off the same peaks ( about number 70 on the machine I remember correctly) where bloody painful! When its the real thing you will know

booboomonster · 25/05/2010 21:28

Thanks Ali for tips - and I'll be thinking of you tomorrow too! My DD was actually born on due date so I was hoping for a double hit rate, but looks unlikely!

pigley yes I saw on another thread about back to back babies that you'd had 2. Interesting - I am trying to encourage her to turn but not overly worried... I think...

First - I've no experience of that, but I am sure, as pigley says, you will know when labour proper starts. Hopefully it will be soon for you!

Hope everyone has a good night and any labour starts are trouble free!

Sassles · 25/05/2010 21:48

Mr Sassles again here. Long story, but Sassles is still in hospital tonight, an accident with the epidural has given her migraine-like headache every time she sits or stands up so she is confined to bed. They tried a blood patch which normally resolves the issue but this hasn't worked and today she had an mri to have a closer look at what has happened. A second blod patch may happen tomorrow and has a 95% success rate so we'll see. She passes on her thanks to everyone and her congratulations for any births she's missed and she can't wait to fill you all in on the details once she's home!

Baby Samuel is doing great, he is passed fit and ready for action but has to wait on mummy to get better before he can come home.

booboomonster · 25/05/2010 22:20

oh poor Sassles - hope they sort out the problem soon and with no complications. Thanks for update Mr Sassles, and hope you aren't too stressed out with your family in hospital! Get well soon Sassles!

AnAngelWithin · 25/05/2010 22:48

aww poor sassles. Hope she is better soon.

just looked on the multiples thread, sophie2008 posted the births of her twins on there

By Sophie2008 Wed 28-Apr-10 13:17:38
Just thought i would let you all know that I finally gave birth on Friday 23rd April.

Corey Drew was born at 11.22am weighing 7lb 2.5 oz and his sister Miriam Elizabeth at 11.23am weighing 7lb 4oz.

We got home late last night and had no sleep as Corey was screaming all night where as his sister didn't make a noise.

I am just in tears today. DH took me out for the day (ok so homebase and tescos probably doesn't really count i suppose but it got me out) But I can barely walk due to the pressure down there and I have had a few breathtaking contractions today. Took forever to get anywhere. Period pains and achey hips and babys grating right at the bottom of my bone. I'm not sure I can stand much more of this.... wish the pains would just come to something and I can have my baby....

kateyjane · 25/05/2010 23:29

Sassles - Really hope the second blood patch works and that you are better soon. Glad that Samuel is doing really well and hope that you are all home together soon.

Squirtsmum - You had a really hard time of it, but your DH sounds lovely and so supportive - hope you are all happily settling in with Rebecca.

Pamelat - I had a similar situation with DD2, DD1 had awful colic and we went through what seemed like endless sleepless nights and tried literally everything to help her - none of my other children have had colic at all, so try not to panic.

Luckymiller - Congratulations, I love the name you have chosen

Alimouse, Moggmum, booboo and Cupcake - Hope the waiting isn't getting unbearable. I can empathise as all my other 3 Dcs have been overdue. I'm sure I would have had a June baby if I hadn't had to be induced.

myfirstbump and James - Hope things are happening for you both. Wishing you lots of luck.

Rachel - Thanks for sharing your birthstory, I am completely in awe of how you managed.

Lizzie - With each of my DCs I have bled for between 4 and 6 weeks. After DD1 I took medication to stop it. I am still going strong at day 13 here. If it is really really heavy or very different to what you've experienced before I would see your GP.

Pigley - Sounds like your meal out was lovely, I'm really glad everything is going well for you. Well done to your DD1

Gils - I hope you have a better night. Hope that BF works out for you.

Pamelat - I would go with your own instincts about the dummy

Congratulations Nimk

first1 - Like Pigley said, you will know

Angel - Sorry you are feeling so rough. Hopefully it won't be long now. Hope you are getting some chance to rest.

SK - Hope you're okay

Well I gave Thomas his first day of formula and he is very happy. Still managed to give him one breast feed as they finally filled up a bit after 24 hours. Still feeling quite emotional about it all, but can clearly see the benefits for Thomas, he must have been exhausted. I am finally looking forward to the midwife coming to weigh him tomorrow
My DH went back to work today, but only for 4 days. I was dreading it but it was better than I had hoped, probably because I didn't spend all day trying to feed. I actually managed to give my other DCs some attention. Ben (DS1) asked me when Thomas was going to go back into my tummy because he really would prefer another sister instead!

brightredballoon · 25/05/2010 23:51

Hi everyone

Sorry to not congratulate individuals, but I am so happy to read of more safe arrivals of beautiful babies. Well done everyone.

Gils totally agree with what ML said about checking latch to ensure baby is getting a good feed, its harder to see at nighttime if their latch is good. Was also going to say I find my DD has a different feeding technique if she isn't really wanting food but is windy, if she is windy she fusses a lot and comes off then latches back on again. Someone on here said feeding cues or windy cues are the same for breastfed babies and its true.
Don't worry about a dummy, from personal experience I have used one with my other two children and have them at the ready this time as well, I breastfed for 18months, 13 months and so far so good with this baby too.

Sassles hope you make a speedy recovery soon, sounds like a sore and frustrating complication.

Anangel hang in there, surely wont be too much longer for you

SUEY I think you will have had your DD2 by now, I hope everything went well, do update us when you get chance

Come on the rest of the May babies, only 6 days left of the month so best make your appearance soon

I'm in total agreement here with MDM, it really doesn't matter if it doesn't go to plan schipo, as long as baby is happy and healthy. Although I hope it wasn't too traumatic for sassles, things go off course but sounds like junior is doing great!

I'm afraid I cannot possibly keep up with a week's worth of posts, but have enjoyed the dummy discussion and what to wear. Albie really struggled in the heat yesterday thinking about it now. He was in a vest and short sleeve and leg romper, but too hot in his pram. Had to feed constantly, which is tough on my nipples! Thankfully he slept like an angel last night, waking for an hour at a time at 1.30, and then again at 5am before waking again at 8. As you can guess by the time, tonight is not going so well . Had the old waterworks the past couple of nights, probably exhaustion and pain catching up with me- my bits are taking forever to heal and I'm still taking co-codymol five days after the birth and something called diclofenac- an anti-inflammatory.

ANYWAYS. Here's the birth story! Went into labour at about 7.30am last Wednesday morning and finally called labour ward and got to the hospital for 6pm (it was nice contracting in rush hour traffic). I had called a fair few times and they were very dismissive over the phone so wasn't expecting a lot when I got there- as predicted I was only 2cm dilated so sent home with paracetemol and warm bath prescribed. As if I hadn't tried it! Anyways, by the time I got home I was losing it big time, so went back to the hospital about 7.30, by which time I was 5cm! Had the gas and air and went for pethidine pretty early on. Totally worth it, was examined for second dose a while later and was 8cm and my waters broke! Full of meconium and tonnes of it so I was moved to the high risk area, given more pethidine and monitored. Luckily I progressed really quickly but LO's heart rate was dropping with each contractions and after about an hour and a half of pushing I just couldn't get him out. They couldn't get a catheter in and my cervix was still slightly in the way, so he was delivered with forceps. Episiotomy was painless at that stage, but needed gas and air for the many, many stitches. He fed soon after labour and has been feeding exceptionally well since! After 12 hours observation we were allowed home the following lunchtime.

His forceps marks on his face disappeared so quickly and he is doing very well indeed. Had the heel prick test today and he was very brave but has been feeding non-stop today. Dropped 3oz, but MW said the non-stop feeding was fuelling a growth spurt.

Had THE poo last night, it bled lots and I cried. Hope these baby blues fade tomorrow! I hate crying for no reason!!! DP is fast asleep of course and seems really put out when I snap at him. He has had eight hours sleep and I am getting none! Going to try out the breast pump in a mo and get a couple of bottles ready for DP to do the late shift (3-7am).

Need to poo again but so scared!!! I had to have a soothing lavender and tea tree bath after today's effort and I swear I popped a stitch. Not that I mind, the stitches are tight and sore and I could do without them!

Anyways, enough about me. Hope to catch up a bit more regularly now I know I can type and milk tanker at the same time .
