haha fanny Sorry - I completely mis-read that and thought you were hiding twinz from us!

Hi all! Have finally got through messages. Am not going away again - takes too long to catch up!

fanny oh how terrifying I'm glad she sounds better though.

iggy which part of France did you go to?

Soooo yes I had a wonderful time away. Journey was loooong. 6 hour nightmare trip to Gatwick (thank goodness they've finished the Sheffield roadworks), but was a nightmare with 5 of us in the car and no aircon and 29 degrees. Dad said, "oh yes, I noticed it wasn't working properly a while ago". SLAAP.

Anyway, thanks to the fact that we weren't stupid enough to fly BA, and we chose instead Ukraine International Airlines, we departed on time to Kiev (North Ukraine) on what was most surprisingly a brand new, lurvely airoplane. Flight was about 3 hours to Kiev, then next flight was about an hour later from Kiev to Simferopol, which is the town in Crimea where my brother has been living for the past few months, organising the wedding. So we arrived, and met my bro and soon to be SIL and they took us to the apartment they'd rented for us. So after an entire day's travel I was utterly knackered.

The next day we met up with bro and mooched around Simferopol a bit, seeing some of the old Soviet relics and monuments which I find really interesting. Wednesday we went by taxi (2 hours) to Sevastopol which is famous for hosting the Russian Black Sea Fleet so you may see FB photos of navy ships and a submarine, and all of us on a little wooden boat on a boat trip going round the harbour. We saw Russian ships with shipbuilders working waaaay up high with no safety ropes etc, and a German warship which had been captured many years ago and left there to rot. Every town and city has its own Lenin statue but also huge, well maintained war memorials and enormous Soviet statues.

So on Thursday we had lunch with SIL's mum and Grandma. SIL's mum has lived in Canada for about 15 years so speaks fluent English but her Grandma lives in Russia and speaks only Russian, yet, bless her, is convinced that the rest of the world speaks Russian and despite being told over and over again that we don't understand she insisted on nattering to us in Russian Later we took a taxi to Novy Svet which is by the sea, and the town where they were getting married on Friday. All the travelling was taking it out of me a bit! YOB managed to get LC on the beach for a couple of hours while I had a sleep. Thursday also was the arrival of my aunt and cousin, who pitched up later that day, but I was too tired to go for dinner with them, so I stayed in the apartment and got LC an early night, while YOB and my family went out for dinner.

The next day was The Wedding!!! There was a 20 minute walk along a made up path through a mountain walk which was just stunning. The ceremony was performed in English by bro's best friend and best man who had travelled in from Canada, and in Russian by SIL's maid of honour (they already legally married in Gibraltar a few months ago, but this was the marriage they wanted). Afterwards there was champagne and sarnies, and while most people partook in the refreshments, a few of us decided to leave the path and climb further off the beaten track up the mountain, which was stunning, if a little tricky for the preggo lady!

Must do some work, more later.

Cosmosis · 01/06/2010 14:31

I have just seen sign in local post office (which doubles as job centre or benefits advice or something) which was most pleasing

?Breastfeeding facilities available here.

Please note the toilets are not suitable for breastfeeding.

An alternative room is available if you require it, please speak to a member of staff?

Darn right toilets are not suitable for bfing!

Writing lists for hospital bags. Anyone want to share their lists?

Bag for me, bag for baby, bag for SFF. My list seems too long already. I think I'll shove the ball & pump and extra pillows in the car too. SFF can go and get them according to my demands.

But then there is the question of which car? There's no way I'll be driving myself to hospital, but if he's too far away and I end up in an ambulance or whatever (if it all goes Pete Tong), my stuff won't be much use to me in his car. Guess I'll keep the bags in the hall, and manage without if the pillows/ball happen to be stuck in a car that isn't carrying me.

Should really sort a stand-by dog-sitter too. Having time on your hands really makes you think! Any other pre-birth prep tips most welcome.

carrots glad you had a good time. the location looks magnificent!

CurlyCasper · 01/06/2010 14:39

fanny sorry, forgot to say that I hope your little one is ok and home soon. A scare like that is the last thing you need.

iggypiggy · 01/06/2010 15:04

cas our NCT class gave us a list for hospital (and a differnt one for home births - that comedically has 'hospital bag' at top of it).

There is alot of detail... I could type some stuff out if useful tho?

FannyPriceless · 01/06/2010 15:33

SilverSky · 01/06/2010 15:38

DKNY MULES!!!!!!!

CurlyCasper · 01/06/2010 15:43

Thanks PESHs! iggy please don't go doing any unnecessary typing - I just hoped someone had something to cut and paste from. Et voila - fanny to the rescue! Thanks FP I'm off to cross check now...

(mine not so glamorous. It will feature the vileness that is Crocs, seeing as I cannot wear normal sandals thanks to my mutant toes )

CurlyCasper · 01/06/2010 15:50

BTW we are not allowed to plug anything in at our hospitals. If I am in for any time I'll have to send phone home to be charged between visiting hours. Also, we are allowed to text, but not call from the unit (go outside to call). And my phone is crap for internet (unless connected to home wireless network). Guess I might be a bit cut-off. Here's hoping I'm not in for long!

FannyPriceless · 01/06/2010 15:51

Definitely not glam.

I have a thousand pairs of mules (lazy bitch can't be arsed to bend down when putting shoes on) so had to be specific. These ones are a million years old and kind of 'beach wear' made of neoprene. i.e. a bit ugly but perfect for hospital showers.

OkieCokie · 01/06/2010 15:57

Rots sounds lush. Loving the very remote pics too.

Cas my hospital had balls to use. Maybe you don't need to take yours unless you are vv attached to it.

I would add flip flop to any list for wearing in showers and dettol anti bac wipes for wiping down shower and bog seat - grim but real!

Fanny platypus? I is also by make up??!! I did wonder before if taking a hair dryer in to hospital was reasonable. Now I just laugh at myself for thinking this. Clearly you are far more of a yummy mummy than I who is clearly a scummy mummy.

FannyPriceless · 01/06/2010 15:58

Yes, we're not allowed to plug anything in either, but last time I was allowed to use my phone. MrP is booked into a nearby hotel so the plan is he will charge my phone at the hotel if needed, while leaving me with his Blackberry (mwah ha ha, thereby fulfilling my secret evil plans to access Mumsnet from hospital ).

CurlyCasper · 01/06/2010 16:03

okie platypus here

Anti-bac wipes duly added to growing shopping list. And here I thought I only had a few things to pick up

FannyPriceless · 01/06/2010 16:09

okes Platypus is my drink bladder. You may prefer a water bottle.

Me without make up = blotchy skin drunken albino woman. Would like to have the option of an alternative look for the photos. A bit of mascara and lip gloss can work wonders.

Cosmosis · 01/06/2010 16:11

we were also told not to bother with taking a ball, they'll have them in each room.

Also told that while you are not allowed to plug stuff in, generally there is a sneaky 5 mins when you can charge phone etc if you need to.

CurlyCasper · 01/06/2010 16:17

Thanks for the PESHpiration all (nothing to do with BO!) I am going to get up and go out tomorrow to buy things for my bags.

rollerbaby · 01/06/2010 16:25

Am loving the platypus!! I could do with one of those attached to me at all times. How do you keep the buggers cold though? I read somewhere that someone put cartons of juice in freeezer and then took then out before leaving for hossie. I had also wondered about hair dryer/make up. I mean I want to look au naturel but not half dead in the post birth piccies!!! Let's just say I am not someone that can go outside the house minus slap.

I couldn't link to your bottles Okie but I suspect we have time...

Just got back from St George's booking in and basically won't be back there other than scans as all my other MW apps near to my house. V good. Fingers crossed I have this home birth as from what I could see St Georges (compared to C&W) is a bit of a dump. That said, the Carmen Suite is supposed to be v good, so I will keep my mouth shut for now cos I might end up there!

Fanny sorry to hear about your little one. That sounds really nasty and scary for her, and exhausting for you. I hope she's feeling better now. I'm sure a couple of nights sleep and your OH will be back to full strength.
