I wouldn't even know where to START with a boy's nappy... all those extra BITS...

Trice: I don't know whether to be impressed or shocked that you are bothering with the baby bath thing this time around. I'm just planning to dunk mine in dd's bath (if I can even be arsed).

Lexie100 · 05/08/2005 10:37

you second time mums make me laugh. I wish i know what worked and what didn't, what to bother buying and what not too. I just get so dazed in mother care etc.. that i walk out having bought nothing.

For instance - do you really need a fitted sheet for the moses basket? How many blankets/sheets? are the grow bag things any good and how many of those. what do i put in my hospital bag, when to pack it? How many nighties do i need for hospital?

I think i need to read up more.

Agghhhhh.

morningpaper · 05/08/2005 11:27

Hehehe hospital bag, basically you need your toothbrush, hairbrush and spare pants. I didn't wear a nightie or anything because there was so much blood there was no point. I basically sat in a pile of blood for the first 24 hours, and the midwives popped in periodically to shove another maternity towel under my butt. Whatever you wear you'll want to BURN afterwards so 3 or 4 XXL tee-shirts is sufficient.

Oh and nappies and sleepsuits for the baby.

And SNACKS.

nervousmum2be · 05/08/2005 11:53

Lexie, i know what you mean! I'm 31 weeks today and getting more panicky as time goes on. Re bed linen, i was recommended to get 3 fitted sheets for both the moses basket and the cot - apparantly the principle of 1 in use, 1 in wash, and 1 spare for when Bab vomits/nappy leaks etc as invariably happens! I just got some cheapy basic white ones from the Boots website (i think trhey were 20% off at the time)

Anyone else hooked on the Discovery Home and Health channel yet? All i do on my days off from work now is watch births. DP thinks i'm mad! Back on 2 night shifts from tonight. Only 7 more shifts to go....

morningpaper · 05/08/2005 12:02

I used normal cotton pillow-cases over the mattress of the moses basket, instead of buying fitted sheets. Just fitted them over the mattress and tucked them in round the edges.

Happy anniversary Moomin!!

I take back my previous boasting about being so active, just did the 20 minute walk to the library, I'm usually fine but this time OUCH bumpstitch or what!!

(Yes aren't I cultured posting from a library lol)

Newborn poo is lovely compared to toddler poo, I like the meconium best because DS's didn't smell at all! It may look like tar.. but I don't care if it doesn't smell!

Hester I saw my friend change her daughter with bilateral talipes in a public loo once, it made her mum look super agile - definately don't worry about terry nappies and saving the earth, you need to find the easiest ones you can! (Plus I read an article that said they don't save the environment as much as we'd all like anyway! )

morningpaper · 05/08/2005 12:52

Fastasleep: It's probably just what you are used to though ... I'm in awe watching mothers changing BOYS nappies ... all those strange bits to be tucked away, eek!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 05/08/2005 13:17

hey peeps!

Boys nappies are a bit alien to me too - i remember changing a friends little boy about 6 months ago and not knowing where to wipe or tuck!

Sure ill pick it up if this is a boy, if a girl, no worries - do that numerous times a day anyway!

Just waiting for midwife to come round.... appointment this afternoon so will see how it goes!

mawbroon · 05/08/2005 14:46

Fastasleep. I was a bit sad and downloaded the actual report re the reusables having the same environmental impact as disposables and although I didn't read all 700 odd pages, it was plainly obvious that the report was so limited in what was being compared that it was not worth the paper it was written on (not that I printed it out).

What makes me angry is that the media have reported that there is no significant difference in the environmental impact between the two methods without going into the limitations of the research.

Seeing it's Friday, I won't bore the pants off you about where the report fell down, but there was certainly a great MN debate thread at the time

MB

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 05/08/2005 15:37

MW appointment went well... no bloods as they were done at the AAU a few weeks ago - but will check them next time.

Bubs heartrate is 132bpm, blood pressure low - 100/50, breech position - AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.... other than that all seems well!!!

Must try and move this baby!!!

Elf1981 · 05/08/2005 16:02

What is SPD????

Moomin · 05/08/2005 19:04

Symphysis pubis dysfunction. It's when your ligaments around your pelvis soften too early in pg and your pelvis moves out of place. Sufferers can get pain in pelvis, front or back, down legs, under and around bump and in back. It's bloody painful! In severe cases you end up with crutches and even wheelchairs.

Saw my osteo today and he gave me a right good seeing to (LOL you ought to see him!). Neck had been cricked past 3 days (all related to spd he tells me) and that feels a bit better after a massage. Hurts most when i get up or sit down, or try to turn over in bed - yikes!!! Used my crutches yesterday and they did help with the night-time pain but they're a right nuisance.

Anyway getting ready to go out for hot date with dh for our anniv. Dd is away at MIL's for night! And, yes, as we discovered the other night we can indulge a little even with the spd (we were visions of loveliness trying to find a position to have sex without me having to actually open my legs!!! - but we got there in the end sorry if tmi, but you get it where you can if you're me at the moment)

morningpaper · 05/08/2005 20:28

Damn it moomin, I'm getting too fat to even have one-in-a-bed sessions, never mind anything else...

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 05/08/2005 20:34

anyone got any tips re breach baby?! Jess was head down from day 1 last time, and im kinda scared! Ive read a few of the archived threads and most seem to think its not a problem at the moment! GRRRRRRR..... why are my pregnancies never "normal"?

triceratops · 06/08/2005 08:58

I was talking to my sister in law yesterday re babies. My niece is a year younger than ds. I had a homebirth (mostly) no drugs, breastfed, coslept from 6 weeks, weaned at 6months and did babywearing (slings) for most of that time. Ds had colic and didn't sleep well, was quite slow to walk and talk (although he was amazing at babysign) and was a bit of a sickly baby in general.

My SIL had a caesarean, bottlefed from day one put dn in her own room right from the start and did cc at about three months and weaned at four months, they never even owned a sling. Dn has always been a calm happy, healthy baby, she slept through almost from the start and walked and talked really early.

The funny thing is that I am not planning to do anything differently but SIL wants to be more touchy feely next time. It just goes to show that there is no right way to bring up baby, (although lots of wrong ways - did you read that thread about putting baby to sleep on their fronts because they sleep so much better ).

BigBumpBonnie · 06/08/2005 09:28

hello everyone, really hope you enjoyed your anniversary Moomin and your 2 glasses of wine (well done you for still having sex! DH has given up even trying now, I'd rather chew an antacid tablet!)

Anyway I'm still feeling mostly ok but having difficulty sleeping it's the heartburn that's really killing me. I had it quite badly with dd and I remember the relief as it disappeared at the moment of birth. Tried to write a bit of a birth plan yesterday but still can't decide whether to have an epidural or not and now I'm contemplating a water birth after reading a thread on it on here. I asked dh what he thinks and he said the hospital might think I'm a nuisance so best not to ask for a water birth!! I might just go with the flow and see what I feel like when I'm actually in labour. Has everyone else got clear ideas about what type of birth they want?

Got dd in a bed for the first time last night. We bought her a really cute little pink toddler bed but thought we'd just let her get used to looking at it in her room for a while and carry on putting her in her cot. Well as soon as she saw it she climbed straight in (she had wellies on at the time!) and wouldn't get back out. She absolutely loves it and doesn't try to get out in the mornings she just stays there and waits for us to get her up. That's one hurdle overcome .

Just over 8 weeks to go and counting!!!!!

sorry for the long post.

mawbroon · 06/08/2005 17:57

AAARGH. Woke up with leg cramps last night. I have been very pleased with myself at having made it this far without ever having to wake up through the night. Not even for a wee (according to the woman who did my first scan, I have a large bladder)

I read that lying on your back later in pregnancy can cause leg cramps as it restricts the circulation because of the weight of the uterus pressing down. All very well, but although I start off sleeping on my side, I always end up on my back. Tonight I am going to try the back to front bra with tennis balls in the cups to prevent me lying on my back. Do you think it will work? I have read it recommended before for snorers. I'm sure DH will find it very alluring

mawbroon · 06/08/2005 18:37

Forgot to say. Is 28 weeks too early for baby to have the hiccups? I have felt rhymic kicks recently and wondered if that's what it was.

Anyone else?

fastasleep · 06/08/2005 18:42

I always end up on my back too and always wake up with cramps..GRR!

JM you've got a couple of weeks before the breech thing becomes a worry yet! But scrubbing the floor is apparently a great thing to do for turning babies (rolls eyes!)... then again there are other things you can do on all fours

LOL @ you all with your fear of boys bits!! Tuck? Tuck what? You just whizz wipe over it and it flobs about funnily for a minute and then you stuff it in the nappy...unless they get a raging hard on.. which can be hilarious, and sort of difficult to squish back in again!!

The heartburn sucks doesn't it... but it'll go the very second we give birth I promise!!

fastasleep · 06/08/2005 18:43

DS had constant hiccups from about 26 weeks until about 4 months old! I knew they were hiccups because the bump would go up...up...and then he carried on after the birth, so cute!

I love newborn hiccups!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 06/08/2005 19:02

not had hiccups this time yet.... jess was a nightmare for them and still is! Have at least 3 episodes of hiccups with her daily!

Fingers crossed this one stays hiccup free!

Boys bits scare me a little..... raging hardons in a baby must be wrong surely!!! The whole pointing at you and weeing scares me too! At least with a girl, all you get is a puddle!

nervousmum2be · 06/08/2005 22:02

Looks like i'm in for a shock - i didn't realise baby boys could get hard-ons! Maybe i'll just leave all the nappy changing to his Daddy

Talking of nappies, finally sorted on that front! We've decided to go with the general consensus on MN (soo informative - thanks guys) and get several to mix and match. My favourites are the Bambino Mio's that we got from Mothercare today (half price, no less!) - so cute. Scary to think i'll have a baby to put in them in just a few more weeks

morningpaper · 06/08/2005 22:10

Mawbroon: LOL at your tennis balls!!! I can't physically lie on my back anymore - the baby squishes my lungs and I feel like I'm fighting for breath!

JM: My daughter always managed to wee through the air when naked - she had a massive arc of wee every time, I had to cover the whole floor with towels.

Had eyebrows waxed today and had to get helped off the couch by the Beautician.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 07/08/2005 19:34

So whats happening this weekend that i dont know about then girlies!!!

Very quiet.... bump is annoying the hell out of me now and feel TOTALLY ready to pop! Kicks in my lower regions REALLY starting to hurt and on top of that bump has learnt how to head butt my ribs!

Not sleeping at all well still, was still awake at 3am last night but a lot of that was emotional stuff (mum died a year ago today) so things arent all that rosy emotionally!

Here's to a peaceful 3 weeks though, DH home on leave - 2 weeks at home and the last week Jess is off on holiday with my dad and me and DH are off to Butlins!

Elf1981 · 07/08/2005 19:53

Hi all, just checking in!

JM - breech position. Were you planning a home or hospital birth? As this is your second, if you were going for hospital, they should let you deliver normally. As for me, as it's first child, plus is breech and holding their own feet, if Boo doesnt move in the next few weeks, I'm looking at a C-section. Hmmm, there isn't an emoticon for "frightened out of my wits!". midwife doesn't seem too bothered at the mo, so i'm trying not to be either.

Hiccups - Boo regularly has them. Sure its the only time I feel regular movement!!

Starting painting nursery tomorrow...

Hope you're all well,

ELF xxxx
