AlwaysHopeful · 03/06/2010 11:23

Wow filly! Properly making your own bread! Is that common in your house or a nesting thing? I love our bread maker but would never be bothered enough to do it by hand.

Anyone heard from gizmo lately? Was thinking of updating the stats, but then wondered if she had decided on a name for her little one yet...

LaTrucha · 03/06/2010 14:22

Madamefreckle - Our present buying attemtp was a big failure too. Sheliked the idea, but when it came down to it, wouldn't choose for the baby. She did choose something for herself though! I decided not to make a big deal of it. I bought something for them both. A bit later on (if we have that much time!) I'll give her a choice of two or three things we've got at home to give him.

CSWS - Good luck for your appointment tomorrow. an elective c-section is a scary thing to confront. I was threatened with one too. I was told a week before the date, but as it turned out had to have an emergency one two days later. I was very glad not to have the wait as I was very upset about it and ould have become very nervous. 24 hours before my emergency one, a woman was admitted for an elective and it went incredibly smoothly. She had very little need for painkillers and it was a nice run-in for me to see. If it comes to it, an elective might not be so awful as the anticipation. How are you feeling about potential ECV? I know how it feels, DD having done a voluntary turn at 37 weeks!

I used to make bread and will occasionally make pizza bread, focaccia and that sort of thing (which is terribly easy) but usually stick to our bread amchine which we adore. Good use of time, Filly, if you enjoyed it!

DD a bit more positive about the baby yesterday and today (had started to get a bit freaked) as we went to play at a friend's house, and by fluke there were two toddler girls with two newborn baby brothers. I'm not sure if she is more reassured by the fact other people have little brothers, or by the fact both babies slept under a tree almost the whole time and didn't seem to take up much of their respective mummy's time though

DH is wanting a microwave as he thinks it will make evrything easier once baby is here. I'm not entirely convinced as we only have a very small freezer, so the amount to be cooked and stowed away and microwaved there is small. Also, we always talk about buying ready meals but very rarely do, and when we do we always dislike them.

Anyone got one and how useful do you find it?

RnB · 03/06/2010 14:46

Tilly is adorable Mampam!

Oh SAucepanman how awful. Hope everything is ok now

AlwaysHopeful · 03/06/2010 15:05

LaT we use our microwave most for defrosting and cooking food I have frozen in batches. It will also get used for the microwave striliser we have if/when I come to bottle feeding. Apart from heating a mug of milk when I want a hot chocolate, I can't think when I use it.... If your freezer is too small for batch cooking, I think you might be right.

AlwaysHopeful · 03/06/2010 15:32

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/06/2010 15:54

Oh well done AlwaysHopeful .

I am always when I hear of people without a microwave. I'd be utterly lost without mine. I don't think that a day goes by without me using it for something. Most days I cook either peas or sweetcorn or green beans in it, and I use it for defrosting/heating chilli/bolognese and for warming up leftover meals or veg. I am tempted to use it to cook rice to go with tonight's dinner too. It doesn't turn out as well as on a hob, but putting our hob on means sending heat through the whole house (have a range which does cooking and heats water and does central heating, but even just using the hob part will send some excess heat round the house).

How did you get on at your appointment today NGUE?

NotGrownUpEnough · 03/06/2010 16:15

Can i just say i use my microwave as a breadbin

Thanks for asking CSWS - i've had a bit of an eventful 24 hours. I started with back ache yesterday morning, thought nothing of it, just went out of the office at lunch for a walk to try to help it pass. By 2pm, i was convinced i was having some pretty nasty braxton hicks. However by 3pm, i was getting pretty panicky and so were my collegues so i drove my self home - NOT TO BE ADVISED!!!

Anyway, rang the hospital when i got home and was advised to go in. By tea time my contractions were about 15mins apart so was being briefed ready for a CS as still breech. Then, just as i've got used to the idea, they slowed right down again and had stopped by 3am this morning. Got discharged from hospital about an hour ago.

Feel so disappointed even though i know he/she isn;t quite fully cooked yet. Was so ready to meet them after all this time.

Sorry for the long post - just a bit gutted and want to get it all out.

When is your apt csws? The Consultant in my hospital who does the ECV is now on holiday for two weeks so won't get turned till gone 38 weeks which make the chance of it being successfull much smaller. Feel so .

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/06/2010 17:08

Oh dear - surely they should have holiday cover for that sort of thing, given how time critical it is?! My appt is tomorrow, so hopefully I'll hear better news and get an ECV appt for early next week.
From your experience yest, you'd better be prepared for an ECV if you do get one to send you into labour.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/06/2010 17:40

Oh and can I just go aarrrrghhhh for news we got today. The playdate that came over on Tuesday came out with chickenpox today, which means that she was at her most contagious when we saw her, and ds hasn't had it yet. Incubation period is around 3 weeks (dd got it exactly 3 weeks after being exposed to person on day before spots iirc), which means that he is likely to come down with it just days before my due date. Aaarrrrghhhh!

LaTrucha · 03/06/2010 17:49

How frustrating CSWS. Have you had it though?

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/06/2010 17:54

Yes I've had it thankfully, so no worries on that front. And dh had it at the same time as dd (which was the reason that ds was conceived, as otherwise dh would have been out of the country!). It's just the prospect of not being able to have ds and the new baby in the same house when the baby is newborn that worries me. Esp if baby stays breech and they try to get me to have an elective c-sec a bit early.

LaTrucha · 03/06/2010 17:56

Yes, that would be awful. I'm rooting for his immune system!

Opinion seems trenchantly divided on the subject of microwaves!

NizzyNoodles · 03/06/2010 18:13

Just a quick one between tea and bedtime.

CSWS DD1 had chicken pox when DD2 was very young (around a month or so) and it wasn't too bad because DD2 had immunity from me. I think DD2 caught it from DD1 but I remember it was very very mild and hardly noticeable at all. Obviously not the ideal situation though so I can understand the potential worry.

I'm a medium weight users of our microwave - not everyday but probably 3/4 times a week

imkeepingmum · 03/06/2010 19:52

LaTrucha we hardly ever use our microwave, thinking about it we use it for: heating milk for hot chocolate, defrosting frozen peas, erm, not much else I can think of! We do both love our cooking though and cook from scratch, never buy ready meals, even if we have frozen left overs we usually heat it up on the hob (easier as heats through more evenly). We're not really helping you with a decision are we...!

greensnail · 03/06/2010 20:23

CSWS you have my sympathies. We're also on the three week wait as both Alice and DD1 were exposed to chicken pox last friday (friend's child came out in spots that evening after we saw them in the morning). I asked my GP about it and she said not to worry about Alice getting it as she'll still have my immunity - if she does get it she's apparently likely to get it very mildly. GP also said that if they catch it as a newborn they're likely to get it again at some point as they'll probably have it too mildly to develop their own immunity.

LaT my DH has also been going on about getting a microwave this week. We used to have one but never bothered to replace it when it blew up and I rarely miss it and am quite glad of the extra space in the kitchen. Have agreed we can get one when we move though if we have a bigger kitchen.

I've had another good day today. Braved my first trip into town with the 2 girls on my own today. Had Alice in sling and DD1 in her pushchair and all went very smoothly. Only issue I encountered was having to stop every 30 seconds for people to admire Alice

Hope those of you with big bumps are managing to stay cool in this warm weather, have been thinking of you all today.

Sunworshipper · 03/06/2010 20:37

LaT I used my microwave as a plastic bag holder.

Filly so glad that everything is coming together for you in terms of your medical team actually taking your concerns on board and being able to have a lovely time with your DCs before the babe arrives.

NGUE Sorry to hear you were so near and yet so far from meeting your little one. After all you've been through over the past day are you going to have to go back to work or can you put your feet up now?

JoKettle · 03/06/2010 21:08

LaT My DH is very attached to his monster of a microwave but we really don't use it that often, much as others say for occasional mug of hot chocolate or defrosting bread. We have bought a microwave steriliser though as there just isn't enough space in our kitchen for a separate plug-in one and we probably won't use it that often anyway (planning to breastfeed with occasional expressing / bottle feed for DH). I've also just realised that I've frozen my batch meals in foil containers so couldn't put them in the microwave anyway!

Is anyone else only getting the nesting instinct in the garden?? Today I couldn't stop weeding the patio even though the bathroom could really have done with a going over. Maybe it's to do with dreamy visions of me and LO lying in the garden all summer... optimistic to say the least!

JoKettle · 03/06/2010 21:12

Oops, should have said occasional bottle feed for DH to give to LO!

MonkeyMargot · 03/06/2010 22:10

csws what an annoyance re. the chickenpox - last thing you need right now.

Am ambivalent re. the microwave. Don't use everyday, but handy for defrosting stuff.

justbeme · 03/06/2010 22:21

We use our microwave for cereal, heating soup, scrambled egg and cooking frozen veg if to add to something like omlette.

No more babies yet then. Am having loads of braxton hicks and feel pressure very low down. My official date was 30/5 (didnt bother to change it on stats) - so am now 4 days late......

Has any one set up the June post natal thread yet for all the new Mummies to chat on??

playftseforme · 03/06/2010 22:22

Hi all, congratulations on all the baby arrivals - I'm now in deep conversation w my bump, willing something to happen early

Monkeymargot hope you enjoyed your preg massage, well done on your 7lb-ers! At 36 wks mine are measuring up at 6 and 6 and a half pounds which is making the tiny baby clothes I bought in expectation of tiddlers a bit pointless. My dd was only 6lb 10 at 40 wks, must be all that choc I'm eating this time round. Are you still feeling relatively comfortable? I've turned into a complete whingey mare - I've got T1's legs and T2's head wedged under my right ribs and it's not pleasant!

Saucepanman · 03/06/2010 23:36

Just lost a massive message! grrr

Anyway will do quick update, apols for not replying to others' news [self-absorbed]

MW came today to re-weigh Gabriel, diff MW to previous bossy one. She immediately said she didn't think his weight or jaundice looked too bad- which made me wonder what bossy MW had told her! However when we weighed him he has lost 20g from 2 days ago. Admittedly this isn't much, but am gutted as have been feeding loads- as much as poss- also managing to express a couple of ounces after feeds. Today Gabriel's been hard to rouse to feed, I am so worried he will end up being readmitted. I think he is fine but I know from past experience the community MWs take no chances. Ds2 and dd both had jaundice- comm mws sent dd back in to day unit at 2 weeks to have her levels checked and they did loads of invasive traumatic tests on her. She cried so much she burst all the blood vessels around her eyes

I wish it could all go right, just once!

madamefreckle · 03/06/2010 23:38

playftseforme - Wow! Yours are doing incredibly well too! There is definitely some nutritional excellence going on on this thread! (Doubt it's the choc!) But it must be indescribably uncomfortable!

LaT - We never thought we'd use the fitted microwave when we moved into our new house just before ds was born but it was useful for the sterilising (although he was never bottle-fed, we did sterilise when we started weaning) and now it is used twice a day to warm up (moo) milk for ds. Also occasionally for defrosting frozen left-overs. We could easily live without it but it's very handy for the milk. I don't trust the thing though! Anything that can heat like that is a bit freaky imo.

CSWS - My sister's baby was only a month or so old when her ds (2.5) got chicken pox. The baby didn't get it - prob because of being b/f. But I don't envy you the worry and the last thing you want with a new baby is another poorly child. Hopefully, if it happens, it won't be that bad.

NGUE - How annoying for you. Maybe it'll all kick off again v. soon.

I was awake loads last night and feeling weird pains very low down. Also I had loads of braxton hicks which make me feel very odd. Does anyone else feel quite short of breath when they happen. They aren't painful for me but I'm sure my bp changes when they happen too. Don't remember this happening at all when preg with ds.

dinosaurinmybelly · 04/06/2010 02:17

madamefreckle I too have had weird pains low down, like the baby's head is right there trying to force dilation. Have also had braxton hicks, but without any pain. Will be 40+4 tomorrow, but my DS2 has been a bit poorly, so I think perhaps this little one is holding on for him to get better (i.e my stress levels are too high and she is staying out of it). He had hayfeverish symptoms on Sunday which turned into laboured breathing on Tuesday night. Luckily doctor saw him that eve and we have had him on a nebuliser + steroids last couple of days. He is on the mend, but I was very much thankful that new baby also didn't decide to make an appearance. I'm also walking / moving around at around half the pace that I was on Sunday, so am thinking things may be gearing up to happen - I hope so. The MW tells me they will let me go 14 days before induction, but I think that is too long.

CSWS the newborn will have immunity whether or not you breastfeed, or so I've heard.

fillybuster · 04/06/2010 11:35

Is anyone else suffering from really bunged up sinuses? I'm spending large parts of the day frantically trying to clear my head and most of the night lying there feeling uncomfortable and blocked - and I really can't sleep when I can't breathe properly!!

CSWS, aaarghh for the pox! DS caught it at nursery when DD was 10 weeks and she was mostly fine (I think she got 3 spots) although the GP reckoned she wouldn't have long term immunity. Having said that, and I don't want to scaremonger, lots of our friends kids have had CP recently....when discussing whether my dcs could safely be exposed a very close friend (who is a paediatrician) strongly recommended against it as the biggest risk is for a newborn to be exposed, regardless of immunity from womb/milk. So def keep an eye on it
