Hello... Technically I'm due on 30 March, but the March list is already quite long and if DS was anything to go by, we'll be well into April by the time this shrimp makes an appearance (fingers crossed, touch wood, etc etc! - still at the early superstitious stage!!). Shall I start with some stats? I'm 34 (will be 35 just after birth), DH is 33. We've got one DS just turned 2.

Hope to have some thread partners soon, I'm v friendly, honest

OP posts:

MrsEvs, so sorry about your dad, hope he'll make a full recovery! Your mum must be ever so glad to have you and your dd there.

My ds is 30 months now and not really ready for a toddler bed. Or maybe he is and I'm not I don't think I'd ever get him to have an afternoon nap again if he could leave the bed, but tbh those naps are getting more and more infrequent. Also, I still don't trust him to go up and down the stairs on his own, just this morning he almost took a tumble down our very steep flight of stairs... Then again, he's got some developmental delays, I guess for most kids his age these things aren't a problem anymore.

As for double buggies, I really hate the things, but I don't know if I'd be able to manage without one! Really depends on how ds develops over the next few months. He's perfectly able to walk long distances, the thing is we can't always agree on which direction to take! Maybe a buggy board plus toddler reins would be a good solution, taking a baby carrier along so I could swap them round if necessary... (then again, if I end up with another caesarean the baby carrier won't be much use to me for a while!)

How is everyone preparing their toddlers for the new baby? Any good picture books you can recommend? I haven't talked about it to ds at all yet, think I'll start in a couple of months time.

Locks · 22/12/2005 13:09

MrsEves I am so sorry to hear that your Dad has been poorly, but am pleased he is on the mend. Are you staying over now for Xmas?

We have tried to keep James involved about the baby, I have a book from first time round that tells you what is happening week to week, it is a bit too much information, but we sit down on a Sunday morning and read it to him (well paraphrase it). He likes to kiss my tummy too which is sweet.

I think I have had a growth spurt this week, my bras finally gave up and I had to get my nursing bras out. I am also potty training DS and he has just weed on the only pair of trousers that fit me

We are going to look for a bed for James in the new year. I think we are just going to go for it and get him a proper bed. His cot is a cotbed so number 2 will use that when they outgrow the cot. It is really annoying as my parents gave away an almost brand new single bed last year.

I was going to get a buggyboard, but not all of them fit all buggies. I might just wait and see how I get on and perhaps make do with a carrier for the baby (DS will be at nursery some of the time).

A friend of mine has just given me a load of nappies ready for the baby. Once the Christmas decs go up the loft the baby clothes will be coming down for washing The next four months are going to whizz by.

tonton · 22/12/2005 16:19

Homsa I checked out 'new baby' books for dd on amazon but they were all too young for her (she is 5). As she'll be nearly six by April we definitely won't be needing a double buggy!
Question for you ladies: at what age is a baby old enough to sleep in a travel cot? We've booked a holiday for late JUly (check out the organisation!) and the villa only has a travel cot. Not sure if Ryanair lets you take much luggage so that may have to do. Will she be too young?

Hi all
At Christmas I am going to read back over this thread and catch up properly, I have lost track of whos who (hormone addled brain?) Have a week off which am looking forward to - have been struggling with work - no energy.
Am 26 weeks today which suddenly seems amazing - feel huge (I do have a very large bump compared to some in my yoga class for example) Last GP visit she couldnt find a tape measure so couldnt do the fundal height measurement (oh I love the efficiency) so no idea if I am really bigger than "should" be. Have put on 2 stone 2 pounds but noone seems concerned.
Had dreadful heartburn last week or so (throwing up in middle of night - yuk)and have big bottle of antacid stuff on prescription but doesnt seem to help.
Thats enough of the moaning - its all beginning to feel more real now - babe is practicing to enter strictly come dancing - and I have been given stacks of second hand baby clothes ! It'll be here before we know it, almost third trimester now (is it 27 weeks or 28 when that starts ?)
Re cots I know mumsnet is asking for reviews so presume there will be info soon but I am in nesting mode and want to buy one now ! There are so many - how do you decide ? Was thinking of having a single bed in the same room (to use as surface and breastfeed on and so I can sleep in there if want). Can a baby/toddler go straight from a cot to a normal single bed without going through a "junior bed" stage ?
Read some "birth stories" on that topic thread and scared myself, is it normal to be terrified of the idea of pain?
Happy Christmas to all and we all know its going to be a very exciting new year

Hi folks, sorry haven't posted for a while have been away visting family. Am a bit cheesed off actually - dh and me have been wondering why nobody had called us when we were going through our amnio, or indeed to congratulate us when results came back all clear and we knew baby's sex. Turns out dh's family don't agree at all with us having had an amnio, and I suspect that is why we have had no support from them. It's been pretty awkward visting them the last few days, nobody seemed particularly interested in my pregnancy and I'm really glad I'm not spending Christmas day with them to be honest.

Right, sorry for the rant, but honestly!

Mrs Evs - very sorry to learn of your dad's illness. Reading your post took me straight back to 4 years ago when my mum was admitted to intensive care with pneumonia. She was there almost 4 weeks (she also has leukeamia) and against all the odds she made a good recovery and today is in pretty good shape. I sincerely hope your dad makes a speedy recovery, best wishes to you and your family xxx.

MrsEvs · 23/12/2005 10:44

Thanks for all your messages everyone. Dad continues to improve, so we're hoping for a merry Christmas after all. I'm here until New Year's Eve, so I'll get to see all the family which is great.

Tonton, baby will be fine in a travel cot. We relocated from New England down to Washington DC when dd was 5 weeks old and were living in a hotel for a while, during which time she was in a travel cot (and since she slept through the night from 11.30pm to 9am from that time I only have good things to say about them!).

FT40 I know loads of people who put their little ones straight from cots to normal single beds (they sometimes started with just the mattress on the floor until they got a bit used to it), the only reason I am going to use a toddler bed is that I have been lent one, otherwise I wouldn't bother either.

I've been having terrible indigestion/trapped wind/heartburn/acid reflux the last couple of weeks too. It has actually woken me in the night 3 or 4 times, which I didn't have at all with dd. Horrible. Oh well, only 14 weeks to go (ish)!!

If I don't get on before have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

Tonton, I second MrsEvs about the travel cots (after all, they used to put babies to sleep in drawers in the olden days, didn't they?), but sleeping through at 5 weeks, I'm so !!! That took my ds a whole year. I'm really, really enjoying my sleep right now...

I'm going to get a bedside cot for the new baby, one of those where you can take one side down and line it up with the parent's bed. I used to love having ds sleep next to me, but was always scared I'd squash him and never managed to sleep properly with him in the bed, so this will be a good compromise.

No pg complaints here at all, except for a constant need to pee! Do you think pelvic floor exercises would help? I think not

Pacinofan, your in-laws sound like a nasty bunch of people, how dare they treat you like that. They should be so happy for you!!!

Well done Locks for tackling the potty training now. I should do that, too. Don't fancy having 2 in nappies. Mind you, someone at toddler group told me the other day, if you start potty-training them at 2 then they're trained at 3, and if you start at 3 then they're trained at 3.... so maybe I'll wait another couple of months.

amanada · 23/12/2005 20:51

Hello everyone,
Well we're just about set for Christmas here, DH and DS have hacking coughs and I've just had the sicky bug that's going around.. Perfect!
We're off to the in-laws tomorrow for a few days, then visiting SIL & her brand new baby (17th dec) so I fully expect to be terrified all over again by prospect of tiny baby - and to sit there going "I'm sure DS was never that small!".
Hope everyone has a peaceful Christmas and will catch up next week.
x

Locks · 24/12/2005 18:09

I am just getting everything set for tomorrow. In-laws are arriving just after midday and there is still so much to do. I am stocked up on the non alcoholic sparkling wine and lager to make me feel like a grown up

I hope everyone has a wonderful stress free Christmas!!

Lots of love xx

tonton · 27/12/2005 17:09

Hope your dad is OK Mrs Evs.
Currently have father-in-law staying. Can't stand him! I am such a bad person....but he never works (that's why he & dh's mum split up) has spent all his money and I know I'm going to end up funding his old age (being the man breadwinner) which really p*es me off!
Sorry. Will calm down. Am so much more irritable than normal. Back to work tomorrow, almost a relief!

amanada · 02/01/2006 13:22

Happy New Year everyone!
We're going to have babies THIS year!
We're on the home run here with visitors, we have MIL arriving from the States on Fri for a week, as we spent Xmas with FIL & SMIL (is that right for step-mother-in-law?) How unfair it is to have 2 MILs.... v bad planning on my part.
So I should be tidying the house etc, but really can't be bothered.
Hope everyone is well and survived the celebrations.
My new years resolution is to put on weight till April

allycotownofbethlehem · 03/01/2006 11:24

hi all. Sorry had been absent for so long but had a fraught time of it before Christmas: went for antenatal check on 21st December. My urine was full of ketones and my BP was 60/40 so low the student midwife couldn't even find it at first bless her. Admitted to her and other midwife that still felt awful still puking nauseous 24/7 etc and got admitted straightaway for fluids and so on.

Then all my veins were collapsing and they couldn't get a line in anywhere. Eventually needed conultant anaethetist to do it and I still bear the bruises today!! Good job I don't mind needles. Started to feel better once the fluids were going on, and they were sending them in real fast as I was quite poorly BUT then I started having contractions so ended up on the labour ward. They eventually passed off. They wanted to put me on a drip to slow everything down but the probem with that is it lowers your BP and mine was so low they couldn't risk it. Had steroids to mature his little lungs in case and told me may have to be transferred to different hospital with intensive neonatal care unit.

They passed off I went back to antenatal ward and started feeling better BUT then they started again and I was really really worried. Eventually stopped again and I was discharged, unfortunately still puking and feeling v v crap.

Went back in on New Year's Day as contracting again but again, they've stopped so am back at work as was told really best to carry on as normal. If its going to happen then it's going to happen.

Anyway, am SCARED and I think the rest of the pregnancy is ruined now as I just keep feeling panicky.

Mrs Evs sorry to hear about your dad hope he continues to improve. Need to go back and read the thread properly to get everyone else's news.

Wish it was April ..........

allycotownofbethlehem · 03/01/2006 11:25

oh, and Happy New Year!!!

spots · 03/01/2006 13:03

Oh dear Allyco, that all sounds so distressing. Can't believe you're back at work! What kind of work is it, do you feel that you can manage? Hope you are getting lots of support. Please let us look after you here as much as we can! lots of xxxx and thinking about you.

All ok here, feeling much dread actually at prospect of two littlies. Had to clear out my 'studio' (hardly able to use it as it is, but love it nonetheless) to make baby room, and wept bitterly! WhaddwewANTanotherbabyfor? I blubbed to poor DH, who would really rather like 4!!!

MrsEvs, hope your dad continues progressing. Amanada, love your NY resolution! And a happy new year to everyone, with a knowing wink because we all know what a crazy old year it's going to be!

tonton · 03/01/2006 13:41

Wow allyco, have scary for you. Hope you're taking it easy even tho you are at work. Do you have much of a commute? Hope not.
THinking of taking a mini-break during feb half term when will be 30 weeks. dh fancies Morocco. Anyone know any good hotels there?

allycotownofbethlehem · 03/01/2006 14:31

thanks ladies - it's not too far to work thankfully. I'm a solicitor BTW.

I think I am just about over the feeling of panicking should everything start up again and am getting a bit more mellow - if it does, it does. I've already been told that there's nothing I could have done/could do to stop it.

On a lighter note - when I was being monitored so much I did notice that the heartbeat was quite fast - up around 150/160 most times. I posted another thread asking if that means it's a boy and it seems that the faster the heartrate the more likely it is to be a girl. Well, blimey. I've bought loads of blue stuff now and went a bit mad in the Next sale. Still, shall not cut off any more labels just in case....

allycotownofbethlehem · 03/01/2006 14:32

oh and spots you cannot be more scared than I am at the thought of two little ones!!

there's 20 years between my eldest and this one, and only 20 months between the youngest and this one and I am PETRIFIED...

colditz · 03/01/2006 14:45

Goodness allyco, you have had more than enough on your plate!

I have an appointment to take bloods on saturday (urk!) then I have to go to my big hospital 20 miles away to have an anti D injection (urk!!)

There was none of this messing about with ds but if it has to be done, it has to be done. My midwives are very good at letting me come in for blood tests when I feel able to.

colditz · 03/01/2006 14:46

And I am also petrified at the thought of two babies! Even though ds will be 3

allycotownofbethlehem · 03/01/2006 14:58

colditz could you have that "magic cream" stuff to use before your injections or is the painful bit not what bothers you? I had a friend once who used to nearly literally faint when she even so much as saw the needle coming towards her. She had to lie down for bloods and everything. I am SO glad that that whole aspect doesn't bother me!

colditz · 04/01/2006 00:46

Ok, a confession.

I am very very VERY phobic. I would pay to be unconcious. I do have the magic cream (emla) and also G&A , but it doesn't stop my hands turning blue with fright every time I sit in the waiting room, it doesn't stop me sobbing hysterically while they do it, and it doesn't stop me throwing up everything I have eaten that day afterwards. I have tried councelling for this, but think I might try some hypnotherapy, as it is literally ruining this pregnancy for me.

tonton · 04/01/2006 09:38

Anyone else exhausted? I am 25 weeks and thought I should be feeling great. But I have started feeling so tired all the time again. Don;t sleep all that well which doesn't help (bit of insomniac made woprse by no booze!).

Poor you Colditz - so many jabs in pregnancy.

allycotownofbethlehem · 04/01/2006 10:09

yes me tired too was great over Xmas and when was in hospital as could have little sleeps through the day. Now I'm back at work though - no chance.

DD not sleeping so well either so up and down with her at nights and DH taken to snoring like a pig which is REALLY ANNOYING.

DD found packet of rice this morning while I was upstairs closing windows so when I got back down she had sprinkled a little in the kitchen, a little in the dining room, quite a lot in the hall and the rest of the contents all over the sitting room and herself. So there I was hoovering before I went to work
