Hello... Technically I'm due on 30 March, but the March list is already quite long and if DS was anything to go by, we'll be well into April by the time this shrimp makes an appearance (fingers crossed, touch wood, etc etc! - still at the early superstitious stage!!). Shall I start with some stats? I'm 34 (will be 35 just after birth), DH is 33. We've got one DS just turned 2.

Hope to have some thread partners soon, I'm v friendly, honest

I think, tumblemum, that they always recommend not using anything during pg purely becuse n pregnant woman in her right mind would sign up to test beauty products out for the sake of the general public! so they are tested on animals, non pregnant people, bath enamel, knicker elastic.... everything except pregnant women. And therefore the absolute safety of the product can't technically be guaranteed. Obviously some kinds of product are safer than others but unless you were actually drinking the stuff I would say it's probably ok as a one off!

MrsEvs · 02/11/2005 14:47

I agree tumblemum - I wouldn't worry to much about a one time application of a topical thing like that. I can't see that much of it would penetrate further than the skin on the scalp, so I'm sure it's absolutely fine. I think it's a good idea to call your doc/NHS Direct if you think that would help put your mind at rest though.

I think we get too paranoid about all these things now - and as you can imagine, here in the US it's at fever pitch! These babies are much tougher than we give them credit - some of them survive their mothers taking heroin daily for goodness sake!! (Obviously not recommending this however !)

CluelessCarrie · 02/11/2005 17:49

Hi I'm new here and a bit unfamiliar with how these threads work - v different to other baby sites I've seen! I'm 32 and am expecting my first baby on 17th April. That makes me about 16 1/2 weeks pregnant - funnily enough the same amount of time I've been married - a honeymoon baby!
Hope to have some good chats on here over the coming months,
Carrie

MrsQ · 02/11/2005 19:38

Hi Carrie, Welcome! How romantic, a honeymoon baby. I have to say, April 17th is an absolutely fabulous day to be born, terrific people are born then (anyone guessed when my birthday is yet )

Saw the midwife today, all fine, HB of 148 so... a girl maybe? Must wait til scan tho! I found out with DS cos I didn't want to run the risk of any shadow of disappointment when they handed me a boy (I've always imagined myself with daughters, being one of 3 girls with a v strong mother figure y'see). After DS I've always said I would now like another boy as a little gang, but the old 'mmm.. pretty sparkly dresses, make up, weddings etc etc' feeling attached to having a daughter are creeping back in so need to find out the sex again to be sure!!

Midwife asked me straight off whether I would be going for a home-birth... which I was surprised at but actually really encouraged by since it's something I've started thinking more and more about. I've always been very much of the 'how could you, imagine the mess!' school, but in the last few weeks I've started to doubt whether I want to have this one in hospital. Anyone else planning homebirth?

spots · 02/11/2005 19:53

Not me, just have this notion that home is not the place I want to be in for birthing. But we have a midwife led unit here; if it was more medical I think I'd consider it more.

I might be tempted at the scan to sneak a preview of the sex of the baby but thinkI 'd regret it if I did. We tried to find out with DD and they couldn't tell. And I got so sure that we were having a boy that I was a bit put out when she turned out not to be one! If I thought that might happen again I would find out. But I think I genuinely don't mind this time.. On the one hand yes, nice to have a 'gang'; on the other, nice to have one of each!

Felt a definite twitch today. ooh lovely.

spots · 02/11/2005 19:54

oh and welcome Carrie! My b'day is April 10th; would recommend that too to any interested parties.

CluelessCarrie · 03/11/2005 11:47

Hi thanks for the welcome - my birthday is 9th April - were we all April babies?!!
I've decided I would like to know if we're having a boy or girl at the scan - like you Mrs Q I want to avoid any disappointment - I've always wanted a boy first. I know saying that is very politically incorrect but I'm just being honest. I'm sure I'll be overjoyed with either but I'd like to know so I can get used to the idea of having a girl. I'm hoping getting excited about finding out at the scan might dilute the anxiety that I felt before the 12 week scan!

Welcome Carrie. I'm a March baby so quite near to April, really. It's sweet you are having a 'honeymoon baby'. That's romantic. Where was your honeymoon?

There's no way we'd want to or be allowed to go for a home birth, Mrs. Q. After our problems last time, there's no way I can be anything other than strapped to a bed with monitors on me, according to our consultant. I'm not keen on that. I feel like I'll want to move around.

I don't mind whether I have a boy or a girl this time but I really want to know. I can't wait. I wanted a girl quite badly last time but now I have DS, I love having little boys, plus I would be able to re - use all those clothes! On the other hand, a chance to shop in claire's accessories etc. for girly things sounds very appealing. If I have a boy or a tomboy, I'll just have to buy things for myself, instead!

Tumblemum, I reckon the lice shampoo will be fine. They say to avoid so much nowadays but if you think back a generation or two, babies were fine and people were eating pretty much everything and putting all sorts of products on without batting an eyelid.

pacinofan · 04/11/2005 11:57

Hi all, sorry haven't been around for a few days but we've had some news to digest and some decisions to take. I had the results yesterday of my screening tests - it was screen negative at 1 in 1200. To some, this will seem like good news, but to us, we are still extremely worried, particularly when 3 years ago dd1 was 1 in 50,000. We have been up most of the night talking things over, and to cut a long story short, have decided to have an amniocentesis, this is being done on Monday morning at my local hospital. This has not been an easy decision to make for us as there is a risk of miscarrying a perfectly healthy baby, but on balance it is the right one for us as we just cannot contemplate the 'what if' scenario. I know lots of mums on here would fully welcome a downs syndrome baby, but this just isn't the case for us and we feel we need to know.

Please keep your fingers crossed for us, deep down I am worried sick and feeling very low. Sorry for the ramble, but thanks for listening,

Ponka · 04/11/2005 13:17

Pacinofan,

I am sorry to hear your worrying news. It's sounds like it has been such a difficult decision to make. It's good that the amniocentesis can be done straight away for you. I don't know much about them. Do you then have to wait for a result, or can they tell you instantly?

I have my fingers crossed for you. I hope everything goes well.

Thinking of you.

Ponka.

MrsEvs · 05/11/2005 20:51

Pacinofan, we will all have our fingers crossed for you and will send positive vibes out for Monday. Don't even think or worry about what "other" Mums would do, as we all know this parenting business is tricky and everybody does it their own way - only you and your partner know in yourselves what is right for you and you just have to go with that. Doesn't stop it being any less worrying for you I know, but at least they were able to schedule it quickly for you so you haven't got weeks of waiting and stressing. Hope all goes well

Welcome to Carrie, how lovely to be having a honeymoon baby

Mrs Q, you're a braver woman than me to be thinking about a home birth - I need total sensory deprivation and back up drugs (to quote Ab Fab!) , especially as number 2 is likely to be bigger than no.1 who was 9lbs 10!! I have a friend who has had her 2 babies happily at home and all has gone perfectly. However in my playgroup of 7 I am the only one who had a straightforward delivery, all the others had complications that there were no indications of before they went into labour, so that would put me off even more. I think as long as you have got a hospital nearby though should anything arise and can manage without the pain relief (legs crossing and eyes watering at the mere thought of it ), then from what I've heard it can be a really lovely experience. Especially falling asleep afterwards in your own bed with family at you side.

Tumblemum · 07/11/2005 17:30

good luck Pacinofan been thinking of you

I am feeing a lot better than I was a lot more energy.

How is everyone else tonight?

pacinofan · 08/11/2005 16:27

Just popped in to thank you for your kind messages. I had the amnio yesterday and am now back home resting with dh looking after me. Am just very relieved it is over, initial results should arrive tomorrow.

Hope all well with everyone,

spots · 08/11/2005 21:56

Glad it's over pacinofan, rest up girl. How long till they give you results?

Had 20week scan today. Not a lot to see actually, bit disappointing compared to DD's whihc showed her wee face in profile. Also legs crossed, so even if I was curious I couldn't find out boy or girl. DD was funny, trying to get up on the table with me and saying 'tummy. painting!' when the mw put the gel on.

spots · 08/11/2005 21:56

sorry PC, you said tomorrow... will be checking in.

pacinofan · 09/11/2005 14:03

Have just received my amnio results - it's good news, and excludes downs/edwards/pataus syndrome. Feel great, and looking forward to relaxing a bit more now that hurdle has been faced. Thank you once again for your kind messages offering reassurance, it has really helped me. xx

spots · 09/11/2005 15:28

Oh how fantastic. So glad for you! Now you can look forward to EVERYTHING!

Homsa · 09/11/2005 19:40

CONGRATULATIONS Pacinofan!!!
You must be so relieved. I haven't had time to post anything, but I did read your messages and was thinking of you today.

Glad to hear that everybody is still going strong! We've now finally moved to Sheffield, and I have to say that my first impression of Yorkshire is that it's extremely wet up here! We have wet patches on the ceilings where the gutters are leaking, and the rain has even found a way into my car, which is starting to smell absolutely vile... yuck.

DS loves it here, though, there's a lot more space in the house for him, and the parks and playgrounds are fab. All he needs now is some little friends!

I've got my 20-week-scan in 3 weeks' time, and we've got a first SALT appointment for DS a day later. Things are finally happening!!!

Ponka · 09/11/2005 19:56

Just a speedy stop to check how things went.

That's so fantastic. I can't imagine the relief you must be feeling. I'll uncross my fingers now then.

Homsa, we're pretty close now then (Nottingham) and yes, it is wet here, too! I hope moving wasn't too stressful. At least you had a good excuse not to pitch in with the heavy stuff! I have a non Mumsnet friend with a DS 12 months moving to Sheffield (they're aiming for South side) shortly. She's also worried about meeting people. I'll probably be up there a fair bit to see them, too.

MrsEvs · 09/11/2005 21:34

Excellent news pacinofan. Hope everyone else is feeling good. I finally seem to have hit the more energy and feeling good phase - hurrah! It would help if dd wasn't up from 12.30am til 3am though!

Feeling so much movement now beanie is really wriggling - oh it's so lovely!

colditz · 09/11/2005 22:39

congratulations Pacinofan, that must be such a welcome relief for you.

i have my 20 week scan booked for November 17th, and hope I can get an idea of the sex. have already decided if it's a girl I am going to reuse all ds's clothes anyway, and buy some flower patches and pink hats and bootees. She'll be fine

pacinofan · 11/11/2005 10:46

Hi all, just wondering how many of us are going to find out baby's sex? Dh and me have had a total turnaround in our decision to find out. The amnio has changed a lot of things for us and now we definintely want to know whether we are to be blessed with a boy or a girl. Will know in about 12 days when final amnio results come through. What's everybody else doing?

Homsa · 11/11/2005 15:52

Definitely want to know the sex! I'd really like a girl this time, but if it's a boy, then I'll need some time to get used to the idea, so that by the time he's born there won't even be a hint of disappointment!

Ponka, we live in the south west of Sheffield, you can CAT me and put me in touch with your friend, if she wants to (I'm quite normal, honest). There seems to be quite a lot to do here with a toddler, playgroups and music classes and baby signing and what have you. Have been dragging DS to loads of these, just to get out of the house and speak to some adults, I don't care if he'd rather go to the park

spots · 12/11/2005 18:24

Today has been my first day in maternity jeans. With the waistband rolled down twice and a big warm vest tucked in to pad them out. But I walked past a door that had a big bolt sticking out of it (toddler friendly house, anyone?) and RIPPED then clear down the side. Think it's maybe not my time quite yet.

How is everyone? FirstTimer40, how's married life going? I just did some scrolling down old messages and there seem to have been rather a lot of us at one point or other; where is everyone?

colditz · 13/11/2005 11:26

Oh spots, GUTTED!

I spent £50 on ONE pair of maternity trousers, but they are smart, black, and fit perfectly in the leg. Which is good when you are 5'2 and don't wear heels.

They are nice Italian make as well, feel like good quality.

my dp says that as I have had £50 to spend on the one pair of trousers that fits, he can have a new playstation game. As if it's the same!!!!!!!!
