Carikube · 20/05/2010 12:09

James, I didn't request the sweep but the MW suggested it at my last appt. I did ask whether she thought it would be of any use as I remember how awful I found all the VEs during my last labour so don't really want to subject myself to it voluntarily. She said she thought it would be a good idea and at least if this does work I can still go to the MLU that I want to go to - if I end up being induced (which would be next week) I would have to go to the labour ward and I don't know how easy it is to get out of being stuck on my back due to the constant monitoring etc so I'm not keen on that idea. Also at least this way she can let me know if there are any signs of me being ready for this one or whether I'm still a way off....

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 20/05/2010 12:20

Yeah I know what you mean about trying to avoid being flat on your back with continuous monitoring. I had that last time and being on your back makes it so much more painful imo. (Main reason I want the epidural as I think they'll insist on constant monitoring again)

I'll be giving birth in the consultant led unit due to my high bmi, but I'm hopeful that we can still make it a positive experience. I think having a satisfactory birth is more about feeling supported and in control than it is about what actually happens. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Let me know how your sweep goes, if it's not too bad I might ask for one!

KatnKankles · 20/05/2010 13:03

Just a quickie to say Ava Rose was born 6 days late on 18th May weighing 8lb 14oz

We are all totally smitten and in love with our 4th baby (3rd girlie) and everyone is fighting over her haha!

Good luck to all waiting to pop and congrats to thsoe who's BAs I have missed.

Kat

booboomonster · 20/05/2010 13:06

ali I think you are right about motherly patience & love - though we have only been trying for about 4 weeks so you are definately doing better at that than me! I am fully expecting a relapse when the baby?s born - but in a way I picked a terrible time to do it, so that?s my fault. Sadly I don?t think DD is old enough to understand the grossness yet - but I do show her the poo in her pants and say ooh its a bit smelly and make a big hoo haa about cleaning her up - in the hope that the message filters through?. [must learn patience emoticon]

thanks for luck hollyoaks sounds like things might be happening?! hope you are ok despite the ropeyness?

james your potty training experience sounds similar - it?s good to know it?s a common problem.

Good luck with the sweep Carikube I am a bit squeamish about it too so do let us know how you get on.

Off to get legs waxed shortly - don?t normally do it so hopefully the pain will give me some preparation for those early contractions....

congratulations Kat ! lovely news. well done!

first1 · 20/05/2010 14:04

Congrats kat lovely name!

Good luck carikube with the sweep. I had my second attempt at one today, but cervix is still too posterior. Grr. Hope yours is more successful!

Just a quick me bulletin before lunch. Saw consultant today. Been booked in for induction at 40+11 next Friday 28th. Really hope I wont need it but feels great to know that there really is an end to this and its in the diary! Positive stories of induction greatly received

pigleychez · 20/05/2010 14:37

Quick catch up whilst its quiet here... DD is napping and DH is asleep on the sofa with Lucy asleep on his lap

MW came this morning and did the heel prick test.. Poor Lucy had to have both feet stabbed as she wasnt getting enough blood out which she obvoiusly didnt like.
Lucy has dropped 8ozs from her birth weight. I know its normal but feel abit like its my fault. DD1 didnt drop a thing and had actually put on weight.

Just been writting out some announcement cards. DD1 recieved a fab BIG SISTER card today with a badge which shes been proudly sporting all day

Still not having much luck with latching DD on but in expressing loads so that she still gets the goodness. Feeling abit like a cow though with all the pumping!

Kat- Congratulations Lovely names... DD1's middle name is Rose too

Squirtsmum- Congratulations Glad your home and doing well

Potty training- Im reading with interest now as the past few days DD has started telling me when she has done a poo ("Done poo Mummy- YUK!") and clearly dislikes the feeling so guessing thats a good sign. Not ready to start just yet but looks like we are heading in that direction.

Cupcake- I remember my sis having her baby 8 weeks before me and it was lovely but frustrating as i just wanted mine.

Found out a friends bro and girlfriend were in the labour ward the same time as me! Their baby was 11 weeks early though!! and weighed 3lbs 4ozs and is currently in SCBU, doing reasonably well.

Thinking of heading out to get Lucy a little outfit as we are going to a wedding reception/party on Sat. Its the second part of our friends wedding we went to a few weeks ago. Last time everyone saw me I had a huge bump, so will be fab to show her off

Lots of lovely speedy labour vibes heading your way to all the overdue and ladies in waiting

mollybob · 20/05/2010 14:40

Hi all - sorry no personals but struggling a bit here with diarrhoea and cramps. Think it's a bug of some sort but agony. Was at antenatal clinic today and reg I saw was very dismissive as not an obstetric problem. Baby is fine and he tried a sweep but head too high and cervix too posterior. I'm booked for term+14 induction on 5th June - hope I won't need it as means hanging around hospital but managed normal delivery after induction before so anyone else needing to be induced shouldn't worry from my experience. Could have had term+10 but DD arrived spontaneously at term+10 so would rather wait and see. DS was induced at term+12 so I just cook them a bit longer. My mum is very disappointed but I told her this was the likely result and to expect a June baby but she didn't listen. Me and DH happy enough and it feels better knowing for sure we still have a way to go than being on tenterhooks. Hope I get over the bug before labour anyway as exhausted running to toilet (well waddling really).

AnAngelWithin · 20/05/2010 16:08

sorry for lack of personals. Just having 10 minutes. Just about fainted when i got back in from school run, the kids are all fussing over me bless them. Also just realised I've not felt the baby move all day Hoping the rest will make baby do something.

MoggMum · 20/05/2010 16:27

Congrats Kat, lovely name too

molly hope you feel better soon.

Angel hope you're ok and feeling some movement to put your mind at rest.

Good luck for all those having sweeps - I'm booked in for one on Sunday so hoping things start moving before then

Any news from Sassles following yesterday's induction?

Getting really irritated now when I see friends/family and they look at me and say "nothing happening then?" .... well obviously not as I'm still here with a HUGE bump

sweetkitty · 20/05/2010 17:25

Quick pop in to see if theres anymore babies

katnkankles - congratulations lovely names

pigley - that's nothing that weight loss a few big poos J was weighed at birth and again at 10 days and was the exact same weight so he must have lost in the interim. His nappies are horrendous we go through about 12 a day had to buy size 2s to contain it all.

I am a zombie today up at 1 and at 4am including full change he didn't go down again until 5.30am argh!

TomlinTowers · 20/05/2010 21:25

Hi All

Congrats katnkankles - lovely name!

Pigley - don't worry about the weight loss, as long as it is within 10% it is absolutely normal. Good luck with the latching - have you tried giving the NCT or La Leche League a ring to see if they have any advice? A friend of mine had an inverted nipple and used a nipple shield to give the baby something to latch on to. Not sure if that would help?

Angel, Molly and Hollyoaks - hope you feel better soon.

Potty training - we have had similar experiences with DS1 (2.11). We started in February and at first he wouldn't even sit on the potty. We did the reward chart thing, where he got a star for every time he sat on the potty (first with trousers on, then with trousers and nappy off) and then he got the same number of smarties after tea as number of stickers on chart. We would sit and read books etc on the potty and didn't link it to wees/poos. Eventually he did a wee in the potty by coincidence, and we made a huge song and dance and he got a kinder egg as a treat. He then progressed fairly easily to doing wees on the toilet.

However, he hates doing poos on the toilet. He did a couple of poos on the potty but was really distressed by doing them. Our compromise is that when he feels he needs a poo, he comes and asks us for a nappy. He then goes away into a corner, does his business and then tells us when he has finished. We then just clean him down and tell him that it would be much easier/quicker if he did poos on the toilet etc. We figure that he will learn eventually to do poos in the right place, especially as he goes to playgroup more and mixes with older children. Fingers crossed anyway!

Thanks for all the replies on newborn poo (a very poo-centred post, this one!). As it happens, Sophie did a huuuuge poo at 12.45am which took me ages to clean up, and then another one this afternoon, so I think things are working now!

Off to bed now - managed to fall asleep in the chair at 4.15am whilst feeding Sophie - fortunately she carried on feeding, came off and slept in my arms until I woke up again at 5.30 but still makes me feel a bit funny when I think what could have happened, so must get more sleep in the day!

kateyjane · 20/05/2010 21:45

Hi everyone

Congratulations katnkankles - beautiful name.
Congratulations to any other new arrivals that I have missed.

Angel - Hope you get lots of movement tonight.

Good luck to everyone else still waiting.

Welcome ande

Sorry for the lack of posts, am feeling a bit stressed this week. Ended up on children's ward yesterday as Thomas now weighs 6lb 11oz (was 7lb 12oz at birth) I was feeling really positive as BF has been going really well (it was a disaster with my last 3 DCs)
On a more positive note the midwife wasn't really concerned because he is happy, not dehydrated and latches on well. I've now had my technique checked by so many people I feel like a glamour model . She thinks that they got his birth weight wrong, I think they might be right, as he doesn't feel as though he's lost over a pound. Also the midwife who delivered me weighed him, then said to my DH "It was 3535g, wasn't it?" He said he thought was what she'd said - wish we'd asked her to check now, but there was so much going on at the time!

I went to the BF cafe today and Thomas seemed so small, all my others have been 8lb +, so slow weight gain is new to me. The midwife is coming to weight him again tomorrow and if he hasn't put on then we have to go back to children's ward. So am keeping my fingers crossed.

Sorry for the 'me, me, me' post, just feeling a bit low as I thought things were going well!

Wishing speedy labour vibes to all of you still waiting.

Hope all the new mums are managing a little bit of sleep

trixymalixy · 20/05/2010 23:14

Hi sassles' sis here, I hope she won't mind me updating you all. Baby boy was born late tonight 9lbs 4 oz. Think it was a bit tough, baby wasn't liking the contractions so had a c-section in the end. I'm sure she'll be on to give you the full story.

brightredballoon · 20/05/2010 23:16

Kateyjane sorry to hear you had to go back to the hospital, how many dirty nappies is Thomas having? I think its a bit unfair the HV coming to weigh him tomorrow. Surely her scales could have a slightly different reading as they are a different pair, I hope they give you the support to carry on feeding if that's what you want.

I have come on to ask about dummies! DD had one from 10days until 6months, DS had one from 3wks until 12months. DD2 doesn't appear to be as suckly as my other two were so I was going to hold off giving her one but she is getting increasingly fussy at bedtime and I think she is starting to want to suck more but she doesnt want the milk that follows when she is comfort suckling from me. I am aware of the 3wk growth spurt and I have noticed she is feeding more in the day but she is so windy and its a battle to get the wind out.

Tomlin I also nearly fall asleep during the night feeds, well infact I have started taking DD2 into my bed to feed her lying down as I was nodding off and also she doesnt settle well in her moses basket after night wakings so its easier but it means she doesnt bring up her wind and I think it might be leading to more night wakings.

SK when you say J was up at 4 and didn't go down until 5.30am, was he feeding the whole time or had a feeding then change/wind/pat/shhhing etc? I think I might not give my babies enough walking/shhing but am letting her use me as her dummy instead to get some sleep.

pigley have you tried taking your baby into bed with her in just a nappy and you in your undies? I think they call it mooning in but can help with the breastfeeding, you help the baby try and latch on at every hunger cue (a cry or mouth open or tring to eat their hand etc)

congratulations Kat

off to bed myself now, DH has DD2 asleep on him at the moment, its the first time he has done that with DD2 aww

rachelfruitloop · 21/05/2010 01:12

Hi Ladies,

My waters have just gone, a big flood in bed!!! On my way to hospital now! Guess the sweep worked! Will keep you updated if I can!

Sassles · 21/05/2010 02:47

Mr Sassles here. Mummy and baby boy are doing fine. Induction didn't go exactly as planned - baby was stressed under contractions (later found that cord was tangled). Every contraction was accompanied by a big drop in heart rate of baby boy. Emergency C-Section produced a healthy 9lb 4 ounce boy at half 9 pm. Sassles will fill in all the gory details but she wanted me to let everyone know and thank you all for the support. He's finally here!

Sassles Jr is going to be Samuel we think.

Hollyoaks · 21/05/2010 08:25

Morning all

Kat - congratulations on your little girl.

Sassles, Mr Sassles and Aunty Trixy - congratulations on your little boy. Glad you had a good outcome despite the hairy labour.

KateyJane - sorry Thomas has been taken into hospital. How annoying if they did get his birthweight wrong and it was all for nothing. I'm sure if he's feeding well theres nothing to worry about, but it doesn't stop you feeling anxious.

Rachel - hope things are going well/have gone well. I guess that's a positive vote for having a sweep. Look forward to your announcement.

BRB - sorry no advice on dummies, dd had one from early on and still has it in for bed . I have a lovely photo of dh with dd asleep on his chest, its so sweet.

Tomlin - good luck with sleeping during the day and a toddler.

Moggmum - I'm now getting sick of the comments 'have you had it yet?' 'any news?' etc... or my personal pet hates are all the methods of getting baby out. First of all, I've heard of most of them and second, I am sick of men suggesting sex!!!!!! It's never women who suggest it

Angel - hope you are feeling better today, take it easy. Hope lo has started to move. I felt very little movement yesterday but assumed it was because lo was tired after all the contractions yesterday morning. The last definite movement was one stretch at teatime yesterday so this morning I woke in a panic as it's usually very active first thing. After lots of prodding its done a couple of little wriggles but not as much as it usually does. Had a few tears this morning and considering ringing the pau at lunchtime if I don't get my 10 movements by then.

Molly - hope your feeling better too, at least the end is in sight.

Pigley - glad Lucy is doing well. Dreading the heel prick test, had to go upstairs when dd had hers done, but hopefully toughened up since then after vaccinations and bust lips etc... Also of your shopping trip, you must be feeling well. It took me a week to pluck up the courage to go to Asda with dd and even then dh got wrong of an old woman for bringing me out as I looked so ill.

BooBoo - hope the leg waxing wasn't too painful.

James - I totally agree about lying down making the contractions much more painful. I found the last hour of my labour with dd the worst when they started continuous monitoring. Is there no other alternative position to b in with continuous monitoring?

SK - hope your getting some more sleep.

First1 - one week to go for you at the very most! Hopefully less

Carikube - hope you had a better night with dd and the sweep took effect. I've got to say dd is a good sleeper so thats not an issue, don't envy you on that one, but during the day she is so whingey and has a tantrum at the drop of a hat. Who has replaced my happy easy going toddler with this little monster .

Cupcake - one of my fb friends had her little girl late Wednesday night. She was due before me and actually went over, but was still hoping to beat her , but also found out yesterday she's used one of the names on our girls shortlist. Not that it matters as we're only friends via fb really and rarely see each other, just don't want people to think we copied her.

Well, feeling better this morning, despite lack of movements from lo. Cold seems to be lifting though was replaced by heartburn last night (first time this pg where its really bothered me ) However, managed to sleep from 10:30 - 6:00 . Sorry to all those with restless newborns and toilet trips but it feels great to get a full night. I'm sure it will be the last in a while. Hopefully this is the calm before the storm though and lo will arrive soon, mil tells me that you usually get a night or twos sleep before labour to allow your body to recharge its batteries before the big event.

Hope everyone has a good day.

MoggMum · 21/05/2010 08:44

Massive congrats to Sassles & family - sounds like you had a tough time but glad all is well now.

Rachel good luck & hope to hear some news from you later today - how exciting!! Pleased to hear that sweeps do work too

Hollyoaks hope your MIL is right about the sleep theory as I slept for 7 hours last night without waking once . Had to keep rushing to the loo this morning though (sorry TMI) so fingers crossed this baby is preparing to make an appearance this weekend

pamelat · 21/05/2010 09:04

Hello all.

Congrats to Kat and Sassles. Glad all is well.

KateyJane - that must be quite stressful for you but it sounds like feeding is going well otherwise, not dehydrated etc. Hope it is all sorted out for you.

Rachel - good luck!!

BRB - I came on to ask a similar question but feel a bit like the worst mum in the world. DS is only 4 days old, he is a good feeder, if a little too frequent. 2 hourly ish in the day and then cluster feeds for few hours about 10pm and then hour and halfly ish in the night, but during the night he does not settle between the feeds.

HV said that he does need need to feed quite that much and I am getting sore.

DD was also a very sucky baby but I perserved as I could catch up on my sleep in the day, but now I have DD to look after during the day (even with DH on paternity leave its fairly tough).

So, am wondering about giving him a dummy? Only to settle after feeds during the night but somehow it feels like he would be too young. Am not worried about it breaking breastfeeding as I really dont think he could forget how to suck. My options really are dummy or to make one of the night feeds a formula one, any tips?

newmomma · 21/05/2010 09:27

Looking forward to hearing some news from you today Rachel!!

If a little

AnAngelWithin · 21/05/2010 09:39

morning all

Rachel, good luck!

pamelat, we gave all of ours the option of a dummy after we exhausted the option of the last feed of the evening being formula. It did help and none of them got 'stuck' on dummies (dd2 wouldn't even take a dummy and used her thumb!)

Hollyoaks hopefully the calm before the storm?? My LO has moved this morning. Not loads but its moved. More squirms than anything though.

Thank you for the update mr sassles. Hope you are all recovering well.

Kateyjane hope Thomas is ok x

Well I have been up since 4am. Hips were so painful and it took me forever to do the school run. My mobile phones broken too typical. Baby is doing some little (but sore and painful!) squirms. 3 days til due date. Think this ones going to hang on in there and be the latest one I've ever had!!! I've had 1 day early, 9 days early, 22 days early, and 4 days late.

OP posts:
pigleychez · 21/05/2010 09:42

Oh Rachel--- how exciting

Sassles- Thanks for updating us Mr Sassles.... congratulations

Kateyjane- Hope thomas is home again soon.

Pamlet- no advise re dummys. We didnt need one with DD and i dont think Lucy will either by the looks of things.

Feelin pretty refreshed this morning after getting almost 6 hours block sleep!! Woke up in complete shock and of course dripping wet So far (whispering of course as not to curse myself!) Lucy has been a much better sleeper than DD ever was and settles very well
