Morning all, have'nt posted for a bit, been so tired. DH has been away so i have been a bit busy...

Just wanted to say am still here

Stickhasgrownup · 25/03/2010 10:02

So I say I want a sling... 12 hours later there is a major sling recall as babies have suffocated in some styles!
I'm even more at a loss now!

bellabelly · 25/03/2010 12:50

Jaysfourth - nice to see you!

Still weeing with rain here, ugh! And I have a pile of domestic chores that can't be ignored (letting agents coming round later for stupid "inspection visit") and I will die of shame if I don't do at least a leetle hoovering and clearing up.

Stick - I think the recall was just for one particular type of sling, the sort where the bbay is basically lying down rather than the upright styles?

Stickhasgrownup · 25/03/2010 13:34

I found this info on the unsafe slings on another thread, if anyone is interested. I'm after a pouch one... so it looks like although they hold the baby in a similar position to those recalled they are ok as the material and style are different to the bag sling.
Can anyone recommend a pouch sling?

I've seen the midwife today for my 16 week check and will see her again in a month so she can issue my MatB1 (otherwise I would not see her again until 28 weeks!) I can't believe that would be it for 3 months!!! I like my appointments... especially hearing the heartbeat etc!

foxyjbro99 · 25/03/2010 13:52

Has anyone got any experience of the Close baby carriers?

comixminx · 25/03/2010 14:01

Ooh, that's quite interesting Stick. I saw a colleague recently who had her little baby in a sling that didn't look at all like those triangular ones - more a sort of long stretchy cloth that wrapped round the whole baby (leaving most of the head free I think) to bring it close to the mum's body. More like this I think, from what I can remember. That's what I'm going to look out for, probably - maybe I can borrow one off my colleague first!

I too like the MW appts for hearing the heartbeat and getting some reassurance

Swordfishtrombones · 25/03/2010 14:35

Some of the slings you can get look terrifying to put on! There are some that you have to wind around about 20 times and I don't think I'd have the patience (or skill). BabyBjorn all the way for me. Dead easy to put on and you can take it off whilst the baby is asleep and lie them down without waking (assuming they don't have the little trigger that seems to go off when they go from vertical to horizontal and immediately wakes them up! ).

However, one of my personal bugbears is seeing people wearing slings really low down so the baby really IS swinging wildly around the parent's waist rather than against the chest. I really want to go and tighten the straps for them.

I had a ring sling which I never got on with either, although I think my sister liked it.

I love being able to kiss the top of their head when you have them in a sling.

DreamingAboutSleep · 25/03/2010 14:55

Hello everyone,

Stick & comixminx I had one of those wraparound slings with DD1, I couldn't put it on without serious assistance from DH, making sure it was fitted properly because I could never remember how to wrap it properly So am looking for a bit more of a baby carrier type thing this time round. Saying that DH loved the wraparound and has already said how much he is looking forward to using it again so my advice would be (as others have said) get one in advance and practice lots!

MamaG I'm very of your lovely straight through sleep and sunny day with an hour or two off to enjoy a coffee. It's miserable and grey here too and I'm still feeling tired and in real need of proper night's sleep! I can't wait for more sunshine and the longer evenings to get here.

mellymooks · 25/03/2010 16:34

Hello everyone, really rainy here too.

I had a hug a bub cloth sling last time and loved it, it took a few goes to get the hang of it, helps to do it in front of the mirror at first but then really easy and suited me as it has no straps to cut in anywhere and you can widen out the material til it sits really snug on you. It suited both of us too as I'm really small and my partner really tall and because it's basically one big length of cloth it can be adjusted to suit anyone, all the grandparents had a go too!

I think it's overpriced for what it is but I used it everyday and round the house and am hoping to again this time so think I will have got my money's worth!

They come on nice colours too!

Everyone keeps telling me how massive my bump is and keeps saying "are you sure there's not too in there?" I could happily swing for them

mellymooks · 25/03/2010 16:34

obviously I mean two

mellymooks · 25/03/2010 16:35

Oh yeah 15 wks today

Jaysfourth · 25/03/2010 17:11

Have to agree with swordfish the slings can lok terrifying, i have never use one, mainly because i have terrible trouble with my back ( since age of 12, back ops, the lot...) but i am reading about slings that are meant to be 'ok' for bad backs, not sure how ok or how 'bad' the back they are referring to, i would love to have a go, but just not at all confident, plus, i am not a small person, so not sure i would feel a bit like a whale restricted when wearing one...if you know what i mean. Maybe i will look into it a bit more....

Melly... i got asked the other day 'have you got much longer to go' wasn't quick enough to think up a cutting witty remark, so muttered yes, and walked off!!

Jaysfourth · 25/03/2010 17:11

Hey girls. Was losing the will to live yesterday after an unfulfilling tramp around shopping centre to find a maternity bra in my size. Finally got a couple at John Lewis but they are on the frumpy side. All the pretty ones only start at 34 and I'm a 32.

Think I'm catching DS' chest infection. Feel all coldy and shite today. But I did manage to get some proper work done.

MW appointment today. After I handed over my urine sample bottle (tmi sorry) she said: "can you just open it?" then, "can you tilt it?" so she could put the stick in, then "can you throw it away?". "Haven't you got any gloves?" I asked. "Yes, but I just let the mothers do it." Lazy mare. Told me not to come back until 28 weeks but THANKS for reminder Stickhasgrownup. I completely forgot about the MatB1. It was really nice to hear a heartbeat though.

I was thinking about slings too! I like the look of the Moby Comixminx. We had a sack/bag thingy before. DH wanted it. I never used it - couldn't get on with it.

I have a formal dinner to go to in a few weeks we get to choose from menu: starters are: rare tuna Nicoise; mozarella, roast beetroot & candied lemon or fois gras terrine & sweet onions. Am feeling very guilty for REALLY wanting option 3 (for obvious reasons). Love moz but I can have that any time. Tuna...rare...mercury...what to do?

Hey! Saturday Night Fever is on tonight. Might have to record it again (I love that old disco music...was listening to Sylvester in the car today. Sadly DS appears to like Dizzie Rascal...Must improve his musical education). Night All.

OP posts:
bellabelly · 26/03/2010 00:47

Love2Dance - Bonkers is a fine tune - your DS has good taste! About the dinner options - is mozarella any better than the rare tuna/foie gras options? Is soft cheese ok? Tbh I have stopped taking too much notice of all the food restrictions - nearly everything I love is off limits and I just can't keep that up for the next 6 months... Anyway, more importantly, what are you going to wear?

comixminx · 26/03/2010 07:55

Seconded on at least some Dizzie Rascal tunes - and I like what I've seen of him on the telly too, he's a cheeky chappie!

Am starting to show a bit more of a bump that people can start commenting on but I still have to console myself that my sister never got particularly huge. Is it bad that I want to get bigger quicker? Heh!

Some of the slings mentioned - those woven stretchy ones - look absolutely gorgeous but are indeed quite pricey for what they are. Must try one out first!

17 + 6 or so

StrictlyKatty · 26/03/2010 09:43

I hated the BB sling I had with DS, after 42 weeks having him attached to me the last thing I wanted was to have him strapped to me for a moment longer! Harsh but true At least when they are in the pram you have a bit of personal space.

Plus he was massive so it was awful lugging him around. Mean mummy!

Got John Lewis coming in a min to collect the beautiful wooden sandpit which has managed to completely rot in 10 months despite the 5 year wood rot guarantee... So spent this morning with a spade getting all the sand out, not fun!

Just ate 6 creme eggs and now have massive heartburn. Do you think the two could possibly be connected?

Still looking annoyingly unpregnant but could do with a bigger bra.

Love2Dance · 26/03/2010 11:50

I must admit I do think Dizzie Rascal is quite catchy (I like "Bonkers" too, but the rest of the album is a bit "me in the club with champagne & birds with boobs" IFYKWIM ). DH says to stop fussing, we listen to a variety of stuff.

Bellabelly no idea what I'll wear to the dinner. I have seen a really nice maxi dress on ASOS ("in the style of Heidi Klum" who am I kidding!) but not sure I can justify it (have to save up some money for childcare etc. when we will only be on 1 income come Sept).

I keep forgetting: 15+2.

PS anyone had experience with slings after a C-section? Not that I want one, but with past history it's a real possibility. Oh, and you know what else? Ever heard of binding the abdomen after birth? Some women in parts of Asia and Africa do it. It's supposed to help your tummy muscles go back to normal after birth and hold it all in. Needless to say, I failed to do it last time (bit hard with a healing wound). anyway, getting ahead of myself. Haven't even had the anomaly scan yet.

Isn't it lunch time yet?

I had one of those Hug-a-bub slings, the fabric wraparound type like the Moby pictured. Loved it, although it was expensive. Feels like you're huggling your baby properly while you've got your hands free. Used to walk him into town with it, and in the early days he could actually feed discreetly while I walked him around the shops. Sounds mad, but I don't think anyone knew! I'd get one second-hand if I could in hindsight, because they're only like a fairly stretchy long length of t-shirt fabric, not £55 worth! One of my friends who had a c-section successfully used a BabyBjorn type in the first weeks after birth.

Thanks MammyG and all for sharing your ideas about potty training. I certainly don't think he's wildly ahead of schedule on these sorts of issues (still waking 3 times every night), so my optimism was misplaced. I will take the advice about it being a bit handy to have them both in nappies rather than looking for loos in a hurry out and about. Only time pressure is that the nursery I hope for him to go to at 3 requires that they are 'dry' in their terms. Aargh! We'll see.

14+1 I think

LucyLG · 27/03/2010 07:39

StrictlyKatty I love that last one.. who wouldn't want a morning spent digging around in a sandpit? I think I would have made the JL peeps get involved whilst I built sndcastles instead, heehee.

I love how chirpy everyone's sounding, spring must definitely be in the air (either that or everyone's over the 12 week hell early pregnancy strife)

I have to say I'm LOVING being pregnant, at the moment. We've just started buying some small things for baby, and looking at nappies, cots etc. We've got so many kind friends who have offered us 'everything' as they're not having any more tots, and it's time to find out exactly what they've got! I feel really cheeky asking them! And how on earth do you go about the 'well thanks for the offer of a cot, but another friend's given us one that's in WAY better condition, so thanks but no thanks!'? Diplomatically, one would imagine!

We're definitely in the sustainable camp and are staunch non-consumerists (we sound like crustys, we're not!) so it's definitely recycled goods (except things like cot mattress) all the way and we're going to have a good go at reuseable nappies - has anyone tried them before? I fancy the bamboo Bambinex ones I reckon.

Morning all! Haven't posted for a while! Just been lurking! I'm starting to get pretty annoyed with the "I've got more of a bump than you & I'm not pregnant" Comments from people who then go on to moan about how fat they are! So basically they're calling me fat! Cheers!!!

I went out with work last night and was severely reprimanded for daring to have some wine. I'm talking about 2 inches in the bottom of the glass to make a spritze! You'd have thought I'd injected 100% proof directly into the umbilical cord! I felt so small! I pointed out that you can have 1-2 units 1-2 times a week and the huge amounts of chocolate I eat and the tea and coffee are probably more risky for the caffine content than a piddly bit of wine!! They then went on to tell me that I was awful for wanting to find out the sex & "Don't you dare tell me what it is" "what a waste of 9 months to not get the wonderful suprise at the end!" I loved knowing what ds was! My baby, my choice! AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH

And breath!

Anyway, My mums coming soon to take me shopping for new house things! I feel the need for a spree after last night!!!!

patito · 28/03/2010 11:13

Morning

I´´m liking the whole spring in the air/sunshine theme. Feels like summers on its way (almost).

Slings, I got a ring-sling at first and couldn´´t quite get on with it and then was given the Manduca sling here as a present. What a present , a sling and freedom all in one!!!!! I don´´t care how wide the buses or shopping aisles are they will never be pram friendly. Its quite expensive but have got loads of use out of it, I only stopped using it when found out I was pregnant again, nearly two years on. It can be used front facing for newborns then on the hip and on the back when toddlers. Love it. I also bought this to keep little one warm in winter months, well worth the 30 quid.

I cant remeber who said they´´re getting a Doula at 650 pounds. I feel the ouch with you. I want a home birth but its not on the NHS here and have to pay 1,500€ for private MW attendance . Mind you worth every penny when you consider my clinic MW descrided local maternity ward as a sausage factory .

Can´´t wait to get back to UK next week and get hold of some decent maternity clothes, (and some creme eggs!) Im down to one pair of oversized tracky bottoms . The clothes here are not very exciting and really expensive.

Hope your all having a good weekend.

ArcticFox · 28/03/2010 13:25

Bananastew- don't you just love it? I've had "is the baby small for dates? You should get it checked" (pitying, knowing glance) as I'm not showing yet. Think my pre-natal yoga teacher thinks I'm just a fantasist like Mrs Schu on Glee. Grrr. Am also finding out gender but fortunately most of my friends also can't wait to find out so they're encouraging me.

Patito- me too! Back in the Uk for 2 weeks and cannot wait to go to

  1. Rigby and Peller for some bras that fit (i know they're expensive but they've changed my life and where I live bras stop at 34b)
  2. Top Shop for maternity stuff (despite pathetic bump, jeans are getting a little snug)
  3. M&S food hall

We do get creme eggs here. Eating about 3 a day at the moment (see earler post). I normally do this for about a fortnight, then get so sick of them can happily do wothout till next year.
