Oo, and I forgot to ask anyone expecting No3 (Foxy, Stick) what are you doing about cars? We have a reasonable sized car but I've tried putting the baby seat in the middle between the two other seats and we can shut the door but it would be a nightmare to try and fasten seatbelts etc.

Anyone got any recommendations for a bigger car? We can't afford one, but best start thinking about it now I suppose. Maybe DH will just have to walk!

Jaysfourth · 23/03/2010 14:08

i am itchy too!! not big time, but a real urge to have a scratch all round my tummy.....!

My thirst comes and goes, i was tested for GD last time round, but that was just because my DS1 was over 11lb....so i cant really help with the whys and wherefores, def spk to MW about it. i think i had the testing done around 23 weeks?

I am still getting headaches, not nice at all, they come on as a dull ach but get worse and worse and last for a few hours sometimes...water and paracetamol does nothing so i am just accepting it as one of my pregnancy things!

Toddlers was ok this morning, told a few of the mums there about baby #4, shocked reactions from most...oh my goodness you are brave/mad, you are going to have your hands full etc etc..but kinda what i expected so i was prepared! Oe kind lady reminded me i will have 4 under four....bring it on!!

comixminx · 23/03/2010 14:35

Hard to keep pace with everyone! Congrats on finding you have a little girl jaysfourth, congrats on the impending housemove bellabelly, and welcome new joiners!

Some people further upthread were interested in doulas. Last night I rang the doula I'd found via the Doula website, and spoke to her for a good twenty minutes or so. She seemed very nice, experienced, and very committed. The service is pretty full-on in that she'd be on call 24/7 for weeks 38 - 42 of my pregnancy, and once labour starts and she comes over then she'd be there for the duration. There is also some ante-natal visits and a post-natal visit in there but I didn't write it all down so some of the details are fading slightly. It's not free with a packet of cornflakes - £650 for this service - but for that amount of time & availability that you get you can see that if anything it's cheap at the price.

She also had lots of good information on things like the healthcare situation in my area - apparently Oxfordshire is great for things like home births if that's what you want (we're as yet undecided). So that's a big part of what I want out of this sort of set-up - expert information and advice.

We still have to meet her to see how we get on in person (as I say she was very nice but possibly slightly too chatty, and perhaps a touch sentimental at times - all perfectly fine but I guess you need to feel like you're going to get on in the challenging circumstances of labour!). I think this is definitely something I'm interested in going ahead with and so will almost certainly be meeting her (with my partner) to see how it goes.

mellymooks · 23/03/2010 14:35

All those thinking of finding out the sex - just remember it's not 100% a sure thing. The women next to me in the ward when I had my daughter was told she was having a girl but it was a boy, she had pink everything, pink balloons, flowers, outfits, pram, carseat..........

We're still not sure if we're gonna find out this time but even if we do because of having witnessed this I will always have a doubt!!

LB1981 · 23/03/2010 15:44

Thanks for the advice mellymooks - me and DH are still weighing up whether to find out.

I am bed ridden at the moment I seem to catch every cold about - this one is accompanied by a throbbing head ache... how I long for Night Nurse!

Is anyone else watching One born every minute??

I am surprised by how much I enjoy it... in a harrowing OMG that might be me-in-6-months way.

Also - has anyone seen Bonds Baby (aussie cotton brand) in the shops??

Cheers, LB

Stickhasgrownup · 23/03/2010 16:17

Swordfish - I have a citroen Zara Picasso. We mainly brought it because it has 3 full seats in the back. So plenty of room for 3 car seats. And citroens seem to be a bit cheaper than other cars of their size!
However we are currently concidering getting the citroen 7 seater (forgotton its name) as I am a childminder and often have a couple of extra children with me.
Although I think 3 children will be quite enough and am secretly hoping I can give up minding

DreamingAboutSleep · 23/03/2010 16:49

Hello everyone, this thread is so busy am struggling to keep up with it and to occasionally post!

Jaysforth - Good news on finding out the sex, another girl sounds fab! My husband is also worried about whether he would be able to love a second daughter in the same way so is hoping for a son and really wants to find out what we're having at the 20wk scan. I really feel like I don't care whether we find out or not this time but am curious all the same.

Good luck with the move Bellababy Voila I too was starting to worry about GD as I am craving sugary snacks and am really thirsty this time round. It's reassuring to hear other people are feeling this too as it probably has more to do with my addiciton to chocolate and muffins than anything serious.

I've just been informed my platlet levels have plummeted again. It happened with DD1 but rectified itself by about 7mths I still had to go under hospital care though. I'm hoping I don't have to again as I really like my midwife and may even keep the same one throughout my pregnancy this time. Any one else experienced this with their pregnancies?

Anyway other than that I'm still feeling completely exhausted and as though I'm about to be ill at any moment, surely this feeling should be lifting by now?????

Hello; newbie on the list here..!
Am due #4 on Sept 9th. Be interesting to see if I can make that 3 on the due date!
LB; Yes, watching One Born Every Minute, breathing along with them and thinking 'shit, can I really push another one out??!'
Bonds was taken over a while back in Oz (MIL lives there and used to ship me over stuff, which luckily I still have)..I believe they have stopped making the amazing all in one button/zip free wear now. I don't believe you can get Bonds in the UK, unless it's online..
Swordfish; we currently have a Citroen Berlingo Multispace, which has a massive boot and sliding doors and big seats; perfick for 3 kids seats. I am going to be gutted to have to part with it once #4 is on the scene!

Hi everyone and welcome to the newbies!

Just out of interest Inzidoodle, can I ask how old your dc is that you're potty training? I had a madcap idea/dream that I could get my ds trained by September (he's 19mths now) but my dmother said that this is land of the fairies talk. Especially since I still have to strap him to the changing mat to keep him still for a minute and the living room dry . Would be nice to be doing only one set of nappies, but potty training is something I've managed to stay pretty ill-informed on. Opinions on whether this is possible from anyone who's done/doing it would be welcome!

Jaysfourth congratulations on finding out the sex. I found out with ds, and found it really helpful for bonding with him because I couldn't really believe I was growing a baby! Then second time I was more relaxed and confident about this 'making babies' business, and said I wouldn't just to ring the changes, then had mc(s) and this time definitely would find out again, because I could do with every help in bonding with this baby like I did with first. I was so surprised when he arrived at the end of labour that it couldn't have been any better

Still have only told my mum and dad, and it keeps getting stuck in my throat when I see my brother and anyone else I should tell, probably because I don't really dare believe it's happening still. The only people who know are those who've asked me about my new, big, flobby tummy, and my brother doesn't notice those sorts of things!

Hope everyone who's feeling sick starts feeling better and everyone who's not is enjoying their bountiful energy!

MammyG · 23/03/2010 20:30

Hi all
Jaysfourth - didnt want to be up. Have to do paperwork/planning most evenings. AT the mo DS2 not settling well so didnt even settle down to work until 9.30. The joys! Have yet to start this evening. Must say it is really starting to take its toll tho. About 4 people today told me I look shocking - lovely!
Bellabelly - roll on the move! how exciting! hope it all goes smoothly.
Swordfish - we have a Ford galaxy. At the moment there are 5 of us and it will take the baby easily. Will have to get a rood rack for longer journeys. I love it - nice and spacious.
Re gestational diabetes: Was warned by a friend of mine that i need to cop on (she put it more politely!) Im having a lot of trouble with food but no prob with choc and as a result am eating mountains of it. I would be a chocoholic at the best of times but have even shocked myself at this stage. Im not thirsty tho but know Im not drinking enough water - just cant seem to pull that one off. I will have to cut back on the sweets but HOW? Plus last two DCs were big enough babies - shouldnt really try to add to that. Might just have to go cold turkey. Is there life after chocolate???

Morning All,

Welcome new posters. Jaysfourth, congratulations on the news. Hope you're not too worried about your stats on the bloods. They sound low.

Oosabeauta, boys are a fair bit later than girls with potty training. They just don't seem to get it as quickly as girls. The best tip I had was to wait until mine was clearly ready - just before he turned 3 (sorry, probably not what you want to hear). All the people I know with boys started about 2.5 to 3.

There's a really good slim book (I got it out the library) called "Potty Training for Boys". If you try too soon it will be very hard work, frustrating and messy, and your DS will pick up on any tensions you feel as a result. This could be counter-productive as he could get confused and anxious. I do sympathise. Those dirty nappies just seem to keep getting bigger don't they? If he's showing signs of being ready you could give it a try when the weather gets warmer.

OP posts:
ooosabeauta · 24/03/2010 07:59

Morning all.

Thank you Inzidoodle and Love2Dance, both very helpful insights. I will have a look for that book when we go to the library tomorrow, thanks. Do need to do a bit of reading on it. Saw I think it was Gina Ford's 'Potty Training In 5 Days' which made me feel a bit over-optimistic! What you're both saying makes sense, and is in line with my mother's advice too

Hope you all have lovely days. Feels like summer here this morning!

P.S. went to bed last night wondering which one of us SamCam is (sorry, do you mind me calling you that?). Think it must be one of the newbies, as she prob wouldn't have risked revealing too early. My dh thinks she might be a bit too busy to be on here. Too busy for Mumsnet? Pah!

foxyjbro99 · 24/03/2010 09:57

Swordfish - I have a toyota verso. It will fit 3 car seats along the back, but I am worried about the arkwardness of doing them all up! We do have another 2 seats in the boot, but if we use those there will be no room for a pushchair!

I'm think i'll just put the oldest in the front and when DH is with us we'll just have to put up with climbing over to do seatbelts up etc.

What does everyone else think?

Stickhasgrownup · 24/03/2010 12:38

Swordfish - Saw you on another thread and realised how nearby you live to me!
Is your dd1 starting school this sept (can't remember how old she is)? My dd is due to start on my due date! Talk about bad timing!
To be honest with you car wise I would look at 7 seaters, if you can. If you ever want a friend back to play with your children or if you share runs to rainbows, swimming etc it may be helpful to have the extra seat... although I guess you do always have the front. I was speaking to my RL friend about cars today and she has 3 children. They got a large 5 seater when no 3 was born and have just lost a fortune part ex-ing it for a 7 seater 18 months later.
foxy - I have the problem of climbing over to do up all the car seats and to be honest it never really bothered me until now! Its only now I feel sick that its a big deal and drives me mad... but in normal health it doesn't worry me. Mind you I am 6ft tall so I guess the reaching isn't a problem.
The downside is that my children can't do up their own belts as they keep undoing each others when they try to slot theirs in iyswim. However when I only have 2 seats in the car, they both just do it themselves. (I'm a childminder by the way and currently often have me and 4 children in my picasso)j
I'm undecided about weather or not to get a bigger car... BUT if I had to get a new car anyway I'd def go 7 seater.

Congrats on having a girl jaysforth - I feel very jelous of you as I would love to know, for a million practical reasons, what I'm having... but dh and I have decided not to find out this time. I already have a ds and a dd and we have found out both times previously, so thought it would be a new experience not knowing!

foxyjbro99 · 24/03/2010 12:44

BTW has anyone looked into pushchairs yet?
DD1 had a Mamas & Papas Pliko - I loved this, but I would like parent facing.
DD2 had a Loola, this was OK, but a little wide and heavy.
This time I'm looking at Britax B Smart or one of the icandy (although they do seem quite expensive).
I've seen the Britax in Mothercare and it looks really good, although it's only just been released so not sure about what people think of it yet.
Any thoughts?

Swordfishtrombones · 24/03/2010 14:42

Thanks for all the car advice ladies!

MammyG there are a couple of Ford Galaxys on our road and I keep walking past them and peering in to check out all the space! I'd better start checking out prices.

Foxy and Stick - I think a 7 seater is probably the way forward. At the moment we rarely give lifts (when I do it is when DH isn't in the car anyway) but I can see that being a lot more useful as DD1 gets a bit older. We also go camping a lot so I was about to start looking at roof boxes, but if we had a nice spacious 7 seater then maybe we could manage with the large boot space? (who am I kidding? I can see us in a year with a 7 seater, roof box AND trailer )

Stick -are you around Forest Hill then? DD1 started school in January as she is 5 this school year. Bad luck with the due date timing! But you'll be the centre of attention in the playground with a new baby!

Oosa - I think you might be a bit optimistic, but if DS is ready then you never know. For what it's worth DD1 was 2.4 and DD2 decided to train herself at 2.4 as well. We had a potty in the bathroom and as DD1 always had a wee before bathtime, DD2 decided to start sitting on the potty. I think her nursery also encouraged her to sit on one around the same time which helped a lot. In my experience boys tend to be a little later than girls (as Love2Dance says) but I think from 2.5 is usual. Still, with it being summer you can always let DS spend days outside with no nappy and see how he goes.

Also, I had DD2 when DD1 was 19 months old and it was actually quite useful in some ways to have two in nappies. Nappies are a pain, but so easy compared to having to find a toilet because your DC 'needs a wee wee NOW!' when you are out and about!

Sorry for this essay, but the only other thing was pushchairs. We have a Phil & Ted's which I'd highly recommend for anyone having a 2nd (or 3rd etc) close in age. I'm just going to use it for this baby as I quite like it when it's just the single pushchair. Plus if I add the second seat it's great for carrying shopping. DD2 is just 3 but walks everywhere these days. And I like a sling (Baby Bjorn-type) for when they are teeny.

Stickhasgrownup · 24/03/2010 16:22

I was going to ask if anyone had any experiences with slings?
I had a baby carrier with my other 2, but like the idea of a sling for when this one is tiny. But there seem to be so many out there! So help would be much appreciated!

Swordfish - I read you were lewisham on other thread. I'm in Eltham.
On the plus side dd sees ds go to school every day and is desperate to go! Even dresses up in an old hand me down uniform! She also knows that the baby is coming when she goes to school... so I guess she's prepared for that shock! So fingers crossed things will go smoothly (and I can take her on her first day)

Oosa - My DS was 2.3 when he potty trained. I had one in the bathroom and he just sat on it one day and did a poo! I think he took about a week or so to master it, but was pretty good from the start. HOWEVER he regressed totally when dd was born when he was 2.6... as did many of my friends children... and after what felt like an eternity of scraping poos out of pants I put him back in pull ups for a months or so. So, may not be worth doing before the little one as you may end up back to square one when little one arrives!
DD trained herself at just 2. Although we had some problems when she was in nursery at 2.9... but fine at home.

Pushchair wise - there is a huge choice when they are little and lots are great.
DO NOT get a 3 wheeler with a fixed front wheel. Unless you only want to go in a straight line!
Also be aware of handle height for you and your dh - some pushchairs have adjustable handles, which is good.
And think of those lovely walks round the shops and make sure you have a decent sized basket underneath!
Lastly, I have found that from about 6m+ I have mainly just used my maclaran techno xt. I love it as its small, but fully reclines and is easy to push (even one handed while holding an umbrella).

Wow that is some list!
Swordfish - I have never cared much for cars and always left it to DH. 4 of our extended family have the Galaxy and love it. Must say I love the freedom in it. The younger boys were pulling at each other etc so now we have taken out the middle seat and they can pass things to each other but not bother one another. I think it is a great car.

Oosa - I left potty training til just before DS turned 3. Heard loads of stories from friends re boys on it taking too long or slightest things causing them to regress. DS was fab the first day, thought it was sooo easy, then next 4 days were a nightmare. I got him those inserts for the toilet and he far preferred them to the potty. Once he got it that was it! thankfully we have not had any accidents worth talking about. He still has pull ups at night tho and not sure when I will take those off. Going to potty train DS2 this summer he will be 2.8 and I think easier as he likes to do whatever big bro does.

Pushchairs - have the phil&teds double. Love it!! will use it this time round too. its expensive but such a huge part of making my life easier!

Had a great day today - wee bump! Yipee! skirt I wore last friday was not good on this morn - had to change. funny how any other time that would upset me and today I beamed. Also no morning sickness today - a corner turned? Got 6 hours straight sleep last night so was just buzzing like a new woman all day today and it was sunny! and I had a coffee out with my pal and no kids for a whole hour! love days like that!

Oh MammyG, your post just made me smile - funny how the sunshine, sleep and an hour off-duty can be so wonderful! Having said that, it's grey and drizzly here today but am really hoping sun will come out later.

Stick, we used slings (babybjorn) with the twins occasionally - I really loved it, DH hated using them. I'd recommend trying one out (borrow from a friend?) before you buy. I bought mine v cheap off ebay so didn't really care that one hardly got used - and in fact I've given that one away now or I could have posted it to you.
