Aw congrats SkaterGrrrrl, what great news!!!
Welcome back.

ooosabeauta · 13/05/2010 18:52

How wonderful Skatergrrrl! Glad you're back!

MammyG · 13/05/2010 19:12

Welcome back Skater! Wonderful wonderful news!
Had my GTT this morn. Went back to work in between. Was fine for first hour then the sugar high/low hit. Bloomin Nora - I felt rotten. Was shaking like a leaf. Boss was v kind and gave me time out when I came back to eat and put my head between my knees until I came round. Luckily all the kids were at a short show so no one missed me.
Cant believe Im finished tomorrow - will be great to have a little rest (if the boys will let me!) Its going to be a long pregnancy but Im so glad I dont have to keep pushing myself now. Have been so ill every evening and not sleeping at all these nights. Wide awake from 5.30 on.
Doctor next tue - still debating as to whether I will find out the sex or not. Those of you who have found out before - did it add to the experience or take away from birth surprise moment?

ooosabeauta · 13/05/2010 19:24

Oh forgot to say congratulations MammyG on making your decision. I hope you feel relieved, and in the great course of things I'm sure it will feel better to be healthy and happy than working and depleted in your condition.

Re. the gender finding out vs. surprise, I know people who've felt really strongly for each choice. One of my friends said that it was the best thing for her not to know so that at the end of a traumatic birth there was an uplifting surprise. For me at the end of a traumatic birth it was still a surprise for me in having a healthy baby, had no energy for any other thoughts, but really did enjoy knowing a bit about who to expect for the second half of the pg. Certainly this time I feel uplifted to know again because I have been a bit detached up until the 20wk scan and it makes it feel more real than before I knew. I'm not one for surprises in any circumstance though!

Jaysfourth · 14/05/2010 08:49

Oh Skatergurrl, fab news, I bet you couldn't believe it when you found put. Poor you though at the time, what a rollarcoaster of emotions!

MammyG, I loved knowing what we are having ( girl/boy) it definately gives you something to 'relate' and bond to! My third we DIDNT find out and I hated it. Personally I believe we have the technology so why not? and while there have been instances of misaken sexing, I think figures are low!
One thing I find strange, is those who find out but don't tell anyone else, what's that all about!!???

What ever you decide, make it right for you

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2010 09:31

oosabeauta I think getting the baby at the end is enough of an uplifting! The pregnancy can be a difficult time and I think having that 20 week point to get something exciting helps a lot. Plus I felt it helped me bond both times, being able to say he instead of it is lovely but I do admire the self control of those who wait

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2010 09:33

Whoops meant MammyG was replying to the reply!!

Swordfishtrombones · 14/05/2010 09:50

Morning ladies
Well I didn't find out the sex with my first two babies as I love the surprise! Since I really don't mind if it is a boy or a girl it seems pointless to know in advance - we only find out because we can, iyswim. It's like a by-product of the scan really - we wouldn't have scans if it was simply to find out the gender because it doesn't matter. (disclaimer - except obviously in very rare genetic cases etc!)

Having said that I found it really difficult not to ask this time round as I have two DDs and I thought it might be good for them to know, but then I thought that if I'd waited for 20 weeks a few more won't make a difference and I LOVE that DH can announce the sex and it be the first part of the pregnancy/birth that he experiences first. I guess it's becoming like a tradition for us (actually the first time he was so overwhelmed he forgot to tell me and needed a bit of prompting from the midwives ).

I'm quite an organised person in general but (at the risk of sounding like a right old voodoo hippie) I find pregnancy and birth to be such an overwhelming experience that I love giving in to it and letting it cause chaos over my otherwise quite orderly life. I like making lists for example, but babies are one of those things you just can't plan for in the same way. So I'm glad I don't know!

It's completely personal - if you want to know then find out! I think there is a wicked part of me that likes it when everyone expects you to find out and they get really disgruntled like it's their right to know before it's born! tough luck I say! Even if I knew there is no way I would tell anyone else. (Jaysfourth - I know you find that a mad concept!)

Swordfishtrombones · 14/05/2010 09:50

Doh!
24+1 - woo hoo!

comixminx · 14/05/2010 10:02

Ha hah Swordfishtrombones - that's pretty much how I feel! In many ways I like the fact I don't know the gender, and I think I might pinch your announcement idea and get DP to tell me whether it's a boy or a girl. I also like it when I upset what people expect, at least a little bit!

To me the gender doesn't matter in principle and it seems to me that a lot of the time that people find out, it's so that they can decide on pink or blue - but I hate that so I certainly wouldn't do it on that basis. It is a bit weird still calling the baby it though, it would be nice to be able to call the baby him or her, but I don't feel strongly enough about it to find out.

24 + 6

SkaterGrrrrl · 14/05/2010 10:32

Thanks everyone, its nice to be back

A friend of mine had her baby a month early -and had nothing ready, which gave me a kick up the backside and I have started mucking out the spare room. We have:

  • A flat pack cot from John Lewis (but cheap - only £69) which SkaterBoy has to assemble (hopefully he will take his shirt off and don a tool belt for this)
  • I'm trying to avoid fancy "changing units" (£400 in Mamas & Papas, anyone?). Have ordered a chest of drawers from Homebase at the right height for baby changing (I measured the fancy changing units on the John Lewis website and ordered cheap drawers of the same height). I intend to turn it into a baby changing unit through the cunning means of putting a changing matt on top.
  • Some stickery things for the wall from here: www.supernice.co.uk/section.php/120/1/kids

Um, that's it! What have you got so far, baby-room wise?

SkaterGrrrrl · 14/05/2010 11:02

Comix I am so with you on the pink and blue thing! One of the reasons we're having a 'surprise' is so my MIL doesnt flood the house in frilly pink dresses and toy ironing boards.

Jaysfourth · 14/05/2010 12:09

bought a few too many nests......

does anyone fancy a fresh cream and raspberry meringue nest? I whisked up the cream myself you know.... now have a whole bowl of it!

Hot choc for later now

aswellasyou · 14/05/2010 13:23

Hello everyone. I'm new here. I'm expecting my first child in September. I had my second scan last week and discovered it's a girl (I'm in the can't wait to find out camp). My twin sister and cousin are pregnant, but apart from them, I have no close relative or friend who's had a child so it's all very new to me. I've added myself to the list below.

LadyRabbit · 14/05/2010 13:27

Must admit to a bit of shopping too, no furniture as yet just bits like changing mat and clothing essentials. Got a Moses basket, but no other big stuff. Have gone ahead and painted the little one's room pale blue (which there is a lot of in our house anyway) after being told 3 times it's a boy. It looks so lovely, and if he does turn out to be a she we can always say we were trying to avoid gender stereotyping... which is a rubbish excuse I know!

Had a meeting in the West End this am and did plan to go to John Lewis for a nosey at prams etc., but my morning sickness is back with a vengeance so I've come home for a lie down. So tedious - I think it's worse than it was a few months ago.

A question - to Bugaboo or not to Bugaboo? Everyone I know raves about them but surely a pram is a pram and they seem jolly expensive. Any veteran mums on list got advice they want to dispense?

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2010 14:14

Loved those wall transfers SkaterGrrrrl will have to work on hubby though I think!

I got a changing unit from Ebay with cupboards and drawers but it had edges so when your little one starts rolling it's a bit safer but otherwise like your cheaper version.

I had a baby bath, which I thought was worth the few pounds it cost. Curtains and perhaps a mobile, but that's about it.

ooosabeauta · 14/05/2010 14:20

To Bugaboo, I say. Not quite fitting the 'veteran' description (although the 'how old is old?' thread is making me think otherwise), but I love my Cameleon, and spread out over the nearly two years that it's been used just about daily, I suppose it's cost us 96p-ish a day. Actually, looking at it like that it still seems quite a lot of money! But it is very comfortable, and my ds is asleep in the top of his in the living room right now, and has been for an hour. I like that it can still face us and recline flat for sleeping like a little cocoon, but I know there are others on the market which do that too now. Am wishing they did a double!

ooosabeauta · 14/05/2010 14:26

Ooh, love that link btw Skatergrrl, thanks! I've been looking for a wallpaper with colourful hot air balloons on it for my ds's room for a while. Does anyone happen to know where I might find one? Otherwise I do quite like those adhesive spots!

comixminx · 14/05/2010 15:22

Those stickers are really ace! Could well end up going for something from there.

No actual shopping done as yet, but I have been given quite a bit from friends who have slightly older DCs / babies. Hmm, changing unit, must think on.

Stickhasgrownup · 14/05/2010 16:59

With my last two I've got a bit carried away with shopping before they are born and then wanted to get bits once there here but really haven't needed anything (especially as you get given lots of presents )
So this time I'm determind not to get too much... mind you not knowing the sex helps me to resist!
Love that link with the stickers... want to do both my current dc rooms with them, but am unsure of how we'll work the rooms once this one is born. Do I put DD and DS in together... or does the baby share with one or other depending on what sex s/he is... so rooms will have to wait for now!
On the to bugaboo question... I've personally never had one, but if you want one I'd say check out ebay as you can often get buggies that are like new as some mums get a bit of a buggy addiction and have loads and hardly use any before moving on to the next! Whatever you buy when they are little you'll probably end up with a maclaren when they grow a bit!

sazziej · 14/05/2010 17:09

SkaterGrrrrl congratulations, what an emotional time you've had! We have the same due date!

As for what I've bought - so far I've bought clothing essentials, disposable nappies for the first few weeks (i'm intending on using washables), ordered cot, wardrobe and dresser from mothercare as they had an offer on,although won't be mucking out and decorating until the Summer, ordered pram and car seat.. going to the Baby show at the NEC next saturday so hoping to pick up some bargains then. We're trying to spread out the cost by buying a bit each month, none of my close friends have children and although I have 2 nephews they are a bit older and my s-i-l had already got rid of all her baby things.

As for finding out the sex of DC, I'm afraid I'm part of the can't wait club. I think having a baby will be surprise enough! Had my 20 week scan a few weeks back but wriggler wasn't in the best position so sonographer could only say 80%, having a 3d scan tomorrow, so hoping they will confirm sex then.

Dixiebell · 14/05/2010 17:46

Hello all. I haven't bought anything yet - got 2nd scan next week, so was planning to wait until after that. Also, am moving house in a few weeks' time (hopefully!). We're moving to a completely new area, so need to sort out new doctor, midwife, hospital etc.....!! Anyone with experience of doing that slap bang in the middle of pregnancy? I imagine it's going to be a bit of a bureaucratic nightmare, and I'll need to go through the whole form-filling detail-taking thing all over again.

Being completely new to this, can I just ask people - are you having bubs in your bedroom to begin with? I assumed that's the done thing for the first few months...in which case not so essential to have a baby's room decorated immediately we move into our new house, although appreciate it might be easier to do it while baby is still in, rather than out, as it were!!

20 + 5

bananastew · 14/05/2010 19:20

Hi all! Long time no post! I've been internetless since we moved 4 weeks ago. Its been sheer hell! Got it back on wednesday & its taken me up until now to catch up on whats been happeneing! I'm so pleased its all good news on the scan front!

24 weeks and alls well here! Babys a real wriggler and I love it. Its quite sad to think this is the last time I'll do this so I'm going to make the most of every moment!

As for buying things I've not bought a thing! As this is DS2 we don't need anything! I am going to buy all new nursery bedding etc just because I don't want him to have hand me down everything!

On that subject I have a matching cot bed and wardrobe from Babies R Us that i'm selling Its cream with a wooden trim. They don't do the range anymore but its very similar to the Henley range they do now. I'm only selling it because we no longer need the wardrobe as the new house has them built in & I figure someone would rather buy a bed & wardrobe set than just the wardrobe. 2 years old and as new if anyones interested. I'm in Lincolnshire!

Anyway. I'm waffling! Nice to be back!

MammyG · 14/05/2010 21:56

Hi all and welcome aswellasyou
All clear on the GTT - thats one less thing to worry about! Back to oranges and chocolate so!
I didnt find out for both my DS and enjoyed the surprise. This time I have a niggling curiousity. I guess I havent been able to enjoy this pregnancy yet and feel knowing the sex would help me bond quicker? Thing is DH does not want to know. (I know if I twisted his arm he would give in but dont want to do that) so I would be keeping this to myself. Would only tell my BF (and you lot) and tell everyone else I didnt find out. Do ye think I could pull this off?
My eldest (4 next week - where does time go!) told my hubbie he wants a baby girl who wears pink tracksuits, because he really likes pink tracksuits!
Havent bought a thing. Really broke at the moment too and not likely to get better until after baby is born so scrimping a bit. Im lucky tho as have enough - need just some kind of changing unit and a high chair later on.
Finished work today!! First friday not having to work. Weird loose end feeling but looking forward to actually taking it easy, as opposed to just saying I will and then scrubbing the house! Have decided I need to abandon stress for a while. This poor bub will be a nervous wreck if I dont unwind a little. Now just hoping the boys will ease up a little and that my small man will sleep past 5 am!!
21+5

Bessie123 · 15/05/2010 01:24

MammyG congratulations on finishing work. I am very , I would love to finish now (and never go back)

I haven't bought anything for the baby yet. But I have a lot of stuff from DD (including a Bugaboo. It's great but heavier than the buggies you can use from 6 months and it's not very big, DD had far outgrown it before she was 2).

Other news - I'm having a boy. I didn't realise how excited I would be about it. I thought I wanted a girl but now I've found out it's a boy I'm over the moon.
