It's been AGES since I looked at mumsnet as I've suddenly got really busy with work. I was all for starting to wind down to the summer, but since the weather is now rubbish again I think I'd rather be earning the money! I have to stop at the end of July anyway as DD1 will be on school hols so no work will ever get done.

I see I missed saucy dreams and lots of scans!

I had my 20wk scan a few weeks ago and baby was fine (didn't find out the sex and didn;t get a clue from the scan). However, just as we were leaving the sonographer mentioned casually that I had a low placenta and that I'd need to come back for a scan at 34wks. Cheers for that one! I was so taken aback I didn't really get a chnace to question it.

I've been googling and it looks like a lot of low placentas move up so I have my fingers crossed. I've also seen a lot of stuff on placenta praevia and I REALLY would rather avoid that if at all possible! Not that it's avoidable, but I am trying not to think about it right now!

Good news - my sister announced she is also pregnant and is due 8 wks after me at the end of October! Hooray!

Swordfish - That will be lovely, your sister having a baby so close to you. I had exactly that with my last pregancy, my sisters dd is 7 weeks younger than mine and they are the best of friends. I was glad I was the first due though as she was so jelous when dd was born and her last few weeks still dragged on .
Fingers crossed your placenta moves and you get the bonus of an extra scan without any problems! I know nothing about low placentas apart from the fact you can't have a home birth if it is... but maybe thats not for you anyhow!

I'm thinking of doing an NCT refresher course. Has anyone else done/concidered these?
I did the NCT when I had dc1 and I'm so glad I did. I learnt nothing as I knew it all due to the nature of my job, but I met 5 lovely mums and over 7 years on we still all meet up every week!
I didn't feel the need to do classes when I was expecting dc2 as so were alot of my friends. However this time I know no one and come september both my dc will be in school... so feel a bit like I'm back to square one.

Just adding my location to the list.
Haven't been up to much. Am very relieved that DH and I seem to agree on names so far aand no one we know is expecting/due before us so hopefully we'll be able to use the names we like. We've decided to keep them secret though just in case.
Can't wait until my 22 week scan, haven't really had much contact with midwives or doctor, keep getting locums for various reasons and they never seem to be able to give me any info or answer questions. Still apparently so far everything was fine last time I saw the mw - 3 weeks ago. Just hope that everything is still alright now.
Went shopping with my mum for some baby stuff. Very overwhelming. My mum's great but we both had to have a sit down and a cup of tea half way through.

Hello everyone,

It's been AGES since i last caught up with the thread and it's taken me almost a whole morning of skiving work to catch up! I must admit I've had to stifle a few giggles/blushes about the saucy dreams (of which I've also had a few) and had a few funny looks

It feels like such a long time ago but thanks for all the sympathy re my kidney stones. That all seems to be well behind me now fingers crossed.
Mammy G I'm sorry to hear it's not the same for your Gall Stones - I really feel for you, it's the last thing you need on top of all the other pregnancy aches, pains and worries

It's good to hear so many scans have gone well - I'm surprised though about how many people are not finding out - I couldn't bear the suspense! We are almost definitely having a boy! He was a proper exhibitionist and gave us a delightful view of his backside showing a very clear shot of his little tackle!
It's weird though because, although I wasn't surprised as I'd had a feeling he was a he since about 8wks, it's taken me a while to get my head round as I've always imagined myself with girls. Not out of preference as such but just always the way the images have been in my head
I am pleased though & DH is absolutely over the moon (running through a list of gadgets he will now be able to buy like RC cars etc).
And at least it gives me time to get some boy's names together - I had a huge list of girl's name and not a single boy's name in mind at all!!

The little man is is a right wriggler though and has been waking me up at stupid hours in the morning recently - obviously a sign of things to come, I think we may have a hyperactive one on our hands!

Hi all, just getting back in to Mumsnet for the first time in my second pregnancy, used it loads for my first one a couple of years ago and it was so much fun!

I haven't read through all of this thread yet but I wondered if anyone out there hasn't felt much movement at all yet? I'm 20+4 and I feel the odd bit of action but nothing strong and not for long periods of time. I'm sure I felt more movement by now with my last one, though I do have a more substantial layer of tummy fat this time so maybe that's dulling the movements!!

I have my 20 week scan tomorrow so I guess I'll find out if all is well then, I'm getting really worried that something could be wrong because of the lack of movement.

Hi All

Another recent absentee, work to blame but all good. Trying to get as much done before my boy arrives and also undertaking the obligatory home re-decoration and re-jigging of rooms before I get too big to do anything.

Had my 20 week scan today - all looking great, he's been moving heaps and heaps and we saw his er, 'equipment', this morning so I think we can safely say it's a boy! Got a name we both love which came to us simultaneously while watching a movie, so have avoided a wrangle. (When we didn't know the sex, girls names were proving tricky.)

Glad to hear everyone is well, all the scans are coming thick and fast now! I'm 20+4 and updating the list with gender accordingly:

PS Cress, don't worry too much about the movement, I found it all got properly started at around week 21 or 22, but has been really proper from about this week.

I had my 20wk scan today and everything was fine - even though the poor little mite has inherited dh's feet.

Just to even things up a bit on the boy/girl results, it looks as though this one is going to be a girl. No idea about names yet though.

hi all

feels like i havnt been here for ever! Sorry for my last post, i know it wasn't anything to do with our antenatel natter, but i was so excited about the iPhone app that my DH has developed i got a bit carried away!! - So carried away that i didnt even put on what the app was called!! doh, i wont bother now, unless anyone is intrested!!

So how have we all been? My hip pain has been giving me real jip, i cant seem to sit for very long without being in agony when i stand up...the morning tim eis the worst, i have to siton the side of the bed before standing up, tilli become a bit more mobile, and at night time i am waking up everytime i want to turn over hoping it will go once she has entered this world!

Coppertop-good news about your scan, welcome to the girl gang, i am struggling with names also, i have a list, there is at least 30 names on it, but none that have really 'grabbed' me yet!

I really like the name Meredith, but it apparently reminds my DH of a large spotty, pierced, greasy haired, rocker from his school days....and he just CANT seem to get over it... i am working on it though!! by the way three of your girls names are on my mega list!!

Swordfish - i had a low lying placenta in my last pregnancy. It showed up at my 12 week and 20 week scan, however, i went on to have a further scan ( 26 i think) and as the baby had grown the placenta had moved, so all was well. I believe the chances of it moving are really high, so wait and see before worrying too much with regards to classes, i did NCT the first time round, then stuck with NHS ones for number 2 and 3, mostly becasue i had just moved to the area and wanted to meet new mums, i doubt i will do any sessions this time round, they are normally run when i have all kids, not sure mums to be would like having my 2,3 and 4 yr old running round their ankles!

Happy friday ladies (if it can be with the rather gloomy election results). I'm so glad I went to bed rather than stay up to watch. What a hoo hah it's causing though - I'm afraid I rather like Gordon Brown and can't abide the idea of DC getting in. It was bad enough waking up to hear him smarming on about change on the radio this morning.

Anyway, I digress. Thanks for the reassurances about low placentas. I'm willing mine to move up a bit as I am booked in and dead set on a homebirth and I hate going into hopital for anything. Apparently I am also at risk of a retained placenta as there is an extra lobe (peculiar or what!). I actually had a tiny bit of retained placenta last time (found out 4 weeks after the birth - shan't give you the gruesome details, but finding out was NOT pleassant ) and so I'm grateful it has been flagged up as a possibility.

I reckon this one is a girl. I know I have 2 already so it's easier to think of having another the same, but we really didn't see any indications of a boy on the scan and it seems like it's pretty obvious when it's a boy! (poor mite if it IS a boy and we didn't notice!).

It's DD1's 5th birthday party tomorrow so I've got my fingers crossed that it doesn't rain. I don't need sunshine but just NOT rain. I have to be able to let 18 small children run around the garden rather than the house! We're taking a 2 hour hit from 11am so it should be just about bearable. Wish me luck!

As for classes I don't think I'll bother. I did NCT with DD1 which was amazing and we met some lovely people, some of whom we are still in touch with despite everyone moving. I didn't bother second time round, and now I know loads of people with younger children and babies so it doesn't seem worth it.

Congratulations on the 24 wk mark Jay! Mine is next thursday so I'm really looking forward to that milestone.

Soooooooooo tired today. Why oh why did I stay up last night? Swordfish, I wish I'd done the same as you and just gone to bed at a sensible time! ALso feling grumpy and doom-laden about the results and hoping that whatever weird coalition hung parliament alliance we end up with doesn't end up cutting our Health In Pregnancy grants just before we get to claim them!

Counting down to my 20 week scan on Tuesday. There's been an outbreak of chickenpox round here recently and was feeling a bit panicked but my midwife reckons I'll be fine cos I had it as kid. Still, will feel a lot better when the scan's behind me...and still very impatient to find out if they are boys or girls.

Hello again everyone.

Jaysfourth, I'm having hip pain too, only at night though. In fact mostly towards morning, makes me toss and turn to try and get comfortable, most annoying for DH! But turning over just seems to transfer pain from one hip to the other. Disappears pretty quickly when I get up though. Picked up a maternity pillow today, so hoping that might help. Also getting incredibly sweaty at night time and then really cold because of the sweat! Argh. Yes, poor DH again.

Had loads of movement earlier this week, proper kicks when I was sitting at my desk that were quite low down so making me jump, but now not had any really for a few days. I'm assuming it's just because bubs has moved into a different position. But annoying to have that reassuring movement which was quite happy to feel, and now it's just gone away again!

As my dad (a GP) helpfully said the other day when I was hoping to get some reassurance from him 'pregnancy is a worrying time...'!! Thanks for that...! Roll on scan in just over a week...

Dixiebell and Jaysfourth I too have been suffering from painful/stiff hip and have found that sleeping with a pillow between my legs has been helping a lot. It does make it tricky to turn over sometimes though but does make me feel better in the mornings.

Still not really feeling much movement, counting down the days until my scan.

Hello. I haven't posted for ages and ages, but thought I would just say hello and update my details on the list - we're expecting another girl.

Am starting to think about how to prepare my 22-month old for the arrival. Anyone have any suggestions? We've started talking about it a bit and she came to the scan with us earlier this week, but I really don't know how much she understands at the moment. It could all come as a terrible shock!

I keep losing this threado so have put it on my watch list.
Had my first friend I havent told ask me if I was pregnant this week. Was a bit surprised as I don't feel any bigger at all and can still lie on my stomach without feeling beached. Couldn't do that with dc3 from about 10 weeks.
Am getting loads of movements almost all day long, not just kicking but turning as well, don't like them ones, make me feel a bit icky.

Have got the GTT in a couple of weeks so not looking forward to that at all. After that it is a month before I see the MW again. It is that awful middle stage where you don't see anyone and feel a bit left alone. Still at least I am not being prodded every week

Hi all hope you had a good weekend.
Have a bit of a conundrum that is wrecking my head. I have the opportunity to finish up work this friday. As the prob with my gallbladder is a bit of a ticking time bomb it would be easier on work if I go. We have an awful problem getting subs here so would be easier to just get someone in. Thing is - this is my 3rd pregnancy in 4 yrs and I have missed a lot of days outside of maternity leave. ie sick leave prior to mat leave cause of bladder issues on the last two. 2 weeks in hospital and 2 weeks recovering last year. etc. Anyway all the days I have missed are totally justifiable but when its read out all together is daunting - in fact I nearly went thru the floor. My boss was lovely about it and was just informing me as by next year I will be very close to the threshold. Anyway now Im freaking out. Part of me is exhausted and struggling and wants to just finish up. But another part of me is just saying tough it out and I can finish up without much repercussions in 7 weeks.Im a teacher so my job is physically demanding Im on my feet all day. But its the dizzy and tired that is affecting me the most. I feel a shadow of myself. Yet am terrified that my record is so bad now. What should I do?

Tough call Mammy G. I'm a teacher too and it is not the ideal job, despite what people outside the profession might presume, to be doing whilst pregnant. If I were you I'd try to make it through to half term and then that buys you two weeks thinking time.

It is coming up to the end of the year which will mean (depending on your position) less teaching time or at the very least less pressured teaching time. So as long as you keep in mind that the stressful part of the year is nearly over and take that into account when making up your mind.

Is it possible to ask work to keep you on in a less physically taxing role? e.g. have a cover in for some lessons whilst you plan curriculum/trips/year groupings etc... for following year?
Or would they let you go part-time until the end of the school year?

Whatever you chose to do put yourself first. Schools will keep. Think of what is best for yourself and your family. Best of luck making the decision and I hope you're feeling better soon.

That is tough MammyG. I second what LB says that teaching isn't an ideal job when you're pregnant. I was teaching when pg with ds and it was impossible - had one day a fortnight where I couldn't legally go to the loo between 8.30 and 4.05 because of break duties, a lunch club and six lessons, and the legal obligation not to leave students unattended in a classroom (and no travelling time between lessons). Am one of the only people in my (RL) antenatal group who's found pregnancy so far much easier with a rampaging toddler than it was at work!

I feel for you in your situation - my ds was due at end of August and it was important to tough it out (I didn't have gallbladder problems I should add, just low bp and fainting) so that I didn't lose all of my holiday pay by starting maternity in early July - but I do remember the headmaster kindly saying that it is a feminist issue that you shouldn't feel pushed out of work due to your role as a woman being pregnant and raising a family, and you shouldn't feel ashamed that there is some impingement on your capabilities while you do that. I hope you feel ok and can feel confident that you are just doing your best in all of your roles!

Hmm, tough one MammyG... Is the gallbladder issue pregnancy related or totally separate? I was signed off sick from teaching long months before my due date (back problems) last time and was assured that pregnancy-related sick leave did not count at all towards your sick leave total. I was fortunate that my school/LA at the time did not try to force my maternity leave to start earlier than planned (can't remember when they are allowed to do this if you're off sick - around 36 weeks, maybe?)

I would say, if you can agree to go off on preg-related sick leave(rather than starting maternity leave early), it'll be a huge pressure off you and off the school. I felt realy guilty for being off BUT it was definitely better for school and students that they could get a long term replacement rather than covering on an ad hoc basis.

Im in Ireland - I trained and taught in Britain and its a whole different ball game. Yous system is a bit fairer on the individual. I dont have any option of part time or support with work in the classroom. I dont have a ta or anything. I have had bladder probs with last 2 pregnancies and with threat of gest diabietes - means I am constantly tripping to the loo. I have spoken to my boss and just have to leave the door open to classroom etc as dont have anyone to relieve me to go. My sick cert would read pregnancy related issue but it seems they still count it. The gallbladder issue began separately but is aggravated by pregnancy. TBH today I have felt awful and have zero energy so think I will just have to go ahead and sign off. I dont think its fair on my class to have someone operating at half steam teaching them esp this time of year when its all the fun stuff. I just dont have the energy for school sports days etc. I still feel so incredible guilty. I live ina small area too and teach locally so will have to put up with commentary and literally not leave the house for a while. Its all so crap. I just have wanted to cry all week. Wish I could just motor on like other women seem to do. I know I have to mind my baby but just feel disappointed in myself.

Oh sweetheart, please don't beat yourself up about it, some pregnancies are much easier than others (eg, mine this time has been a breeze compared to my first time) - that's why some women can just motor on. Maybe have a quiet word with your union and find out if it's actually legal in Ireland for them to count preg-related sickness because I'd be surprised if it was - thought the whole EU was covered by that. And if you do decide to take leave, please don't feel like you'll have to stay inside all the time. Going for a gentle stroll, popping to the shops, etc is very different from whole-class teaching day in day out!
