Hey ladies

Hope everyone had a good weekend?

Do any of you commute and what has been your experience of people offering seats? I am not visibily pregnant yet admittedly but I do wear a London Underground "Baby on Board" badge which generally isn't noticed and I too am a sardine on packed tubes.

I commute daily Brighton to London on crowded trains and mistakenly believed that when no seats are available in standard class, it was ok for me to take a seat in first-class. However I found out yesterday the unpleasant way that this is not the case as I was threatened with a penalty fare. The conductor then changed attitude and let me sit in first class but it's not allowed on Southern Railway, only in fact on

First Capital Connect
South West Trains
South Eastern

There are priority seats meant for those preggers or infirm but of course they are always occupied and I can't realistically march up and demand that someone sacrifice their seat?

Any tips / advice / similiar stories?

Doodleydoo · 15/02/2010 11:32

isheisnthe - am sure mine was similar last time - I haven't had mine back yet which is quite annoying - 2 weeks ago I had the tests is that normal?

driedapricots · 15/02/2010 11:35

hi ladies
not been on for ages...i'm a bit rubbish as keeping in touch as work is so full on right now and my only real opportunity to natter away! please excuse me if i'm a bit of a fairweather poster...plus i don't have much to say really!!! well, apart from my sickness seems to have reared it's head again - anyone else still suffering at 16 weeks?
isheisnthe - i think that is slightly lower than you'd ideally like, but i wouldn't worry - my midwife said they contact you directly to discuss if the figures are in the dangerously low bracket. i am sure all will be well
ok, will dip in later but gotta get back on with work for now ;-(

Doodleydoo · 15/02/2010 11:35

LCRC - damn well right you can go up and demand someone moves - if you are pregnant and they aren't then that is tough on them - I suggest trying to get a letter from your dr to say this again in case you are challenged again before you start to show! You would give up a place for someone with crutches I assume - many men don't realise quite how totally mindnumbingly exhausting it can be to be preggers!

bouncingblueberries · 15/02/2010 11:51

LCRLCR I'm on the same train route as you but I don't go as far as Brighton. Last time I was pregnant I was shocked how few people offered up their seat for me. I even stood on the tube at 8 months pregnant with my mahoosive bump bashing the newspaper some inconsiderate kn*b was reading while sitting down.

This time round, I'm resigned to the fact that the journey to work in the morning is a standing-up affair. But I catch an early-ish train home so tend to get a seat on the way home, which tbh, is when I really really need it.

No real advice sorry, guess we've just got to grin and bare it . Can you work from home a day a week or something to give you a rest? I found that helped enormously last time and managed to convince work to let me work 2 days from home in the last trimester.

NichyNoo · 15/02/2010 11:53

Hi all

Just had a lovely weekend in Berlin with DH (in the snow!) Discovered the joy of German non-alcoholic beer! Every bar had at least 2 different non-alcoholic beers and most of them were lovely and tasted just like the real thing!!! Yum yum! Also ventured a very small glass of red wine on the Saturday (after a big meal and plenty of fluids). I couldn't finish it all though as felt too guilty..grrr...

isheisnthe - my doctor said that the cut-off point is 1 in 250 (or at least it is in Belgium). She said that she would only phone me if the result was under this (i.e. high risk) and wouldn't tell me the actual result as many women worry if their result is say 1 in 260 which is still classed s low risk if you see what I mean? My GP actually let slip the true figure when I went last week (1 in 7300) but you really shouldn't worry as long a you are over the 1 in 250 mark!!

15+2 today - starting to get a slight tummy and my boobs feel like udders - am getting dry and cracked nipples as well which is minging! Next GP appointment on Friday so am hoping to hear the heartbeat again

isheisnthe · 15/02/2010 12:06

God - Now I am really worried that you are all in the 1000's

drcaroline · 15/02/2010 12:08

Hi LCRLCR

Just sending you my sympathies - I also commute on Southern trains on the Hove-London route and was also commuting three years ago when pregnant with DD1.

In answer to this comment:

"There are priority seats meant for those preggers or infirm but of course they are always occupied and I can't realistically march up and demand that someone sacrifice their seat?

Any tips / advice / similiar stories?"

I think that Southern were running a trial scheme where you could get a Priority Pass if you were pregnant/disabled/elderly etc. I saw some info on posters and their website a couple of months back, but haven't checked if it's still running. Then the theory is that, if you can't get a seat on a busy train, you wave your Pass at someone occupying a priority seat and they should give it up for you.

Last pregnancy, I did sit in first class a couple of times when it was really busy and I had a huge bump and was fed up after walking down several carriages with no one offering their seat. The conductors were OK about it in those circumstances although it's not officially allowed.

Hope that helps.

missced · 15/02/2010 12:22

Another one for the list! I am 41 and 12 1/2 weeks pregnant at the moment - in SE London and due 26 August. This will be my first small bean and at the moment I am trying to deal with the paranoia around the odds against an "older" mum. (1/110 risk of downs, still working out whether or not to go for an amnio). Still, looking on the bright side, at least I have finally got my appetite back!

KayloHalo · 15/02/2010 12:35

Hi ladies, hope you all had a lovely day yesterday.

Thank you for all your replies - I have a mw appointment on Thursday so will discuss baby movements with her then - and hopefully hear the heartbeat as not heard it yet.

RE DOWNS RISK RESULTS - 1 in 610 still a good result, don't worry!!

Me and the kids have been baking for Daddy today Plain scones and shortbread. Smells lovely in here now. And I want to eat them all!!!

Take care all, may pop back later xxx

isheisnthe · 15/02/2010 12:53

Bloody hell - dunno what to do now - just spoke to the scan nurse and now feel worse :-(

She said they would give an amino if I want one - trouble I have is that DH DOES have downs in his family..........

vix206 · 15/02/2010 13:44

In the literature I got form the midwife it says that downs does not run in the family. One of DH's cousins has downs.

KayloHalo · 15/02/2010 13:50

isheisnthe did they do the nuchal scan or just the blood test? What does your dh say?

I'm sorry I don't have any proper advice, I think if I had concerns I would have the amnio but thats just me.

xxxx

OP posts:
neenz · 15/02/2010 13:59

isheisnthe, 1 in 600 is low risk. They only offer you more screening if you are 1 in 200 or lower. You are more likely to have a miscarriage after 12wks (1 in 100 risk) and that is not something we tend to worry about.

Does anyone have a link to that aibu thread about having kids close together? I couldn't find it... I will three kids in 2.3yrs, what would the psychologists think of that?

Is anyone else really hormonal? My DH is going to get stabbed if he is not careful - every little thing just gets me so mad atm!

Doodley, working for DM is very prestigious IMO! The paper is very hated though, for good reason .

isheisnthe · 15/02/2010 14:00

If it doesnt run in famillies why do they ask the question?.....

DH is doing the man thing of researching the internet, we will speak when I get home from work - he is at home with the boys cos of half term.

Thanks all

isheisnthe · 15/02/2010 14:02

Oh, and to answer the question they did the scan and the blood test

Aussieng · 15/02/2010 14:19

Isheisnthe. I know it is easy to say but try not to listen to the results for other people - they are all "normalised" based on different factors such as their age etc. I was very relieved with I got my NT result (decided against having the bloods done at that point) but then did get quite anxious again when I heard some other people's results which were considerably lower risk than mine. Statistics are very difficult when it relates personally to you.

Remember the "average" risk for a 35 year old woman is 1 in 350 so by that standard (I know you are only 33) you are lower than average risk.

I had very definite views before having the nuchal test that I would have an amnio if and only if the results came back as higher risk than 1 in 150 (given the amnio risks) and it helped having resolved that in my mind in advance. A bit too late for you though if you did not already go through that thought process. I know that this is sensitive but have you and your DH resolved what your thoughts are on termination if Downs is present (hypotehtical rather than actual questions since I appreciate that this is a private matter for you)? I know it is hard but bear in mind that there is not really any need to rush this decision too much (ie you can take weeks rather than hours (my calculation is that you are about 12-13 weeks is that right) although I'm sure the being in limbo is stressful in itself.

I'm sorry that this is so stressful for you and hope that you and your DH work things out between you. xx

babyducky · 15/02/2010 14:20

Hi everyone

Again I have been rubbish at catching up

isheisnthe- sorry you are feeling stressed about your result, as others have said 1 in 600 is still low risk so try not to worry too much, easier said than done I know! xx

Hello to the new people!

drcaroline, Im also In hove & have a 3 year old!!

Hope everyone had a good valentines day x

Ah Nichy I heart Berlin - my favourite city (possibly tied with New York) even when we nearly got drowned during the reunification celebrations last year. But seriously - you are in Belgium - talk about great beers!

Hello drcaroline and missced - congratulations and welcome.

gosh today is going slowly - want to get home for 4.55 for the new series of Coach Trip

pamplem0usse · 15/02/2010 15:03

LCRLCR... it's rubbish isn't it?
But actually even the likes of FirstCapitalConnect won't even offer you a seat in first class if the rest is full unless you have a months season ticket. I'm one of the unfortunates who probably travels in 2/3 times a week, allbeit at rush hour... but it doesn't make financial sense for me to have a season ticket. I announced very loudly to my husband how ill I was feeling because of the pregnancy when we were on the train together and you can see people have heard as they make a distinct effort to stick their heads in their newspapers/ look away/ turn their music up.
I've also heard some pretty unpleasant stories about people who've requested a seat because of pregnancy... responses like ' it's not my fault you're pregnant, you should take that up with your husband'. No acknowledgement that (a) he wouldn't be their if his mother had taken that attitude (b) procreation is necessary for the survival of the human race. I have to say by and large the worst culprits are men in suits in their 30s/40s..... grrr

Chulita · 15/02/2010 15:25

Ah, so glad I don't commute anymore, 2 years was enough to last a lifetime.
I've been gearing myself up all day to go swimming tonight and I'm all of a sudden really not wanting to. Just the thought of people seeing my flabby 17 week pregnant self has made me all self-conscious and cowardly. I really want to do something because I believe the fitter you are when you labour the 'easier' it should be. The pool's about 1/2 mile walk from the house so I've got no excuse...give me some courage ladies!

bouncingblueberries · 15/02/2010 15:36

Go on chulita get your butt in that pool! It's so lovely to float around feeling weightless and you'll feel so energised and virtuous afterwards. Wear a maternity swimsuit though - I found it makes the bump appear more bump-like and less flab-like
