vix206 · 05/02/2010 15:06

I run my own business with DH so I'm just taking 6 weeks and then its back to work for me. The upside is I get to (in theory) pick my hours but the downside is there is basically no option for maternity leave because without me the business would fail to function and we'd be left with no income I'm just hoping I have a nice easy birth and a nice easy baby but that's a lot of hoping!!

vix206 · 05/02/2010 15:07

Oh and also planning to work until I literally can't do it anymore, as this is my first pregnancy I have no idea how that will work out.... Its all very worrying but trying not to think about it right now!

ElusiveMoose · 05/02/2010 15:09

Vix, my husband's aunt, who's a bit of a high flier, not only worked right up until the end, but also popped into the office for an hour or two to sort some things out on her way to the delivery suite while in labour .

vix206 · 05/02/2010 15:14

LOL @Elusive I think this will be me except I will be popping in to pack pants and bras (We run a designer lingerie and swimwear website)

Normally I love it but starting to feel deprived now that all the Spring/Summer items are coming in and I can't wear any of them! Well I can, but not for much longer with the tummy I am developing!!

Aussieng · 05/02/2010 16:09

Thinking of you Bigmutha

Maternity pay for me is 13 weeks at full pay then 13 weeks at half pay then 13 weeks on SMP - so pretty decent. It will still be a a shock to the system although I will get a nice tax rebate for the early part of the year which makes this a very well timed baby! Basically I can take about 7-8 months leave resonably easily but will need to think about going back to work after that. Although euromillions is at ?85m tongight....

LCRLCR I'm planning to ask our mortgage company for a one month payment break. I also have a car loan on which I am entitled to one month payment breaks after 6 months of continuous payments. I have just requested one payment break (granted) and am banking the money for the second half of my mat leave and will request a second payment break after 3 months of maternity leave (ie in 9 months time). Do you have any options such as that which you could consider? We also just feel very lucky that DH is now working because when I got pg he was not. On the plus side this had focussed my mind to look into maternity pay and potential payment breaks in advance etc.

KayloHalo · 05/02/2010 16:11

LCR This was definitely my wake up call when I had my first, I only got 26 wks leave and had to return early because of financial worry.

Hopefully won't happen this time as dh in on par for a lovely little promotion - keeping fingers crossed, at the moment I get 15k a year, and he gets 18k. If he gets this promo he'll get 30k + bonus.

So I won't have to work so much.

Not lazy, I just wanna spend more time with my kids and not miss things. With both dd and ds I missed each milestone - first tooth, first word, first step.

Don't wanna miss it this time!!! I'm determined

Dibbydab · 05/02/2010 16:16

I only get stat minimum as well. Am (planning) not taking any of my annual leave until I start maternity approx 2 weeks before due date, then end maternity after 11 months taking 4 weeks annual leave at end of maternity so in theory I get a months pay before I go back to work at the end of month 12. Work have agreed to this - either that or I told them I was going to take all my 6 weeks leave before I started my maternity, which gives them even less time to find a wonderwoman/superman to replace me

Plucking up the courage to tell my boss that I'll be handing my Blackberry in on the day I leave - my maternity leave is me and baby time, not "Sorry to interrupt, have you got a minute? Can you just get me up to speed on the Carter file?"

Nikalah · 05/02/2010 16:54

Bigmutha Thinking of you and really hoping all is well.

Saw midwife today and she did the heartbeat thingy & I heard the heart-beat which is nice as the sickness is starting to wear off (yippee!) and I've not a huge belly (just the usual flubber) so it's a good reassurance - I can see why lots of people have bought their own dobler thingys.

Time seems to be racing by....

Is anyone else sick of hearing other people's HORRIFIC birthing stories? It makes me feel quite queasy!! I've had to ask one person to stop!

Have a great weekend - fingers and toes crossed for you Bigmutha x x

KayloHalo · 05/02/2010 17:01

Off home now girls - have a lovely weekend. I'll try to catch up over the weekend if laptop allows me to...

Love to All xxxxx

bigmuther65 · 05/02/2010 17:18

Well all is well baby still there with heart beat was give many explanations for the bleeding and told it may well carry on intimately cramps may well just be my cervix pushing the blood out,and as for the sickness maybe i am lucky that it is just getting better.Think i am going to just be a bit unlucky and have a pregnancy with lots of drama. Was so convinced it was all over for me,was laid on the bed when they scanned me waiting to absorb the news they were just about to give me started to cry when they turned the screen to show me my liitle bean with the heart beating away my eyes are so sore with all the crying i have done in the last 24 hrs

girlsyearapart · 05/02/2010 17:26

bigmuther that is sad news, but it is early days for listening to the heartbeat.
hope you got good news at the scan. THinking of you.

Dd2 has finally started walking at nearly 17 months! Very glad.

Up for most of the night last night with dd2 coughing and snotting so hoping for a better one tonight.

I stopped working before dd1 was born and will go back once all the dcs are at school or at least nursery. Bearing in mind that all being well we may have a 4th it could be a while yet!!

girlsyearapart · 05/02/2010 17:30

X posted with you bigmuther fab news

Bet you're sooo relieved.

They couldn't find any reason for the bleeding I had either 'just one of those things'

Aww BigMutha that's lovely news.

Put your feet up and have a lovely (tear free) evening.

cakeywakey · 05/02/2010 18:37

Yay Bigmuther! So pleased for you, and for your positive scan Alice. Also pleased to hear that you're back at home Starshaker.

Only a week until my scan now. Am terrified and excited in equal measure . MS has completely gone now and feeling a lot better than I have been. I'm really beginning to show now - must stop eating so much, because I can't blame it on the bean yet really!

Chulita · 05/02/2010 19:27

bigmutha that's fantastic news - I was praying all morning for you, hope you don't mind! Hope you have a chilled out weekend

KayloHalo · 05/02/2010 19:30

Great news Alice and BigMuther!!! So pleased for you both.

Can't stay gonna go cook tea - chicken tikka masala, boiled rice, chips (for dh) and naan breads (plain for me, garlic/coriander for dh)

Making my mouth water just thinking about it!!!

We're a very spicy family

xx

Chulita · 05/02/2010 19:40

DH just made me sausage, mash and gravy while I was getting DD to bed Must be something in the air!

KayloHalo · 05/02/2010 19:43

You see, your dh is a sweetie too - reckon you're right tho they both cooked the same thing

wondering if they're googling or something

OP posts:
Chulita · 05/02/2010 19:50

Maybe it was on ReadySteadyCook or something - or maybe sausages are the only thing DHs actually want to eat! Last time he cooked he made the most amazing Toad-in-the-hole. I'm noticing a pattern

cakeywakey · 05/02/2010 19:58

I've made DH sausages tonight pan fried with onion and apple wedges and then finished off with reduced stock and redcurrant jam sauce. He's not in yet and I couldn't help but snaffle a banger in a sandwich - sooooo tasty .

Doodleydoo · 05/02/2010 21:51

Highly recommend Nigella Express book as v quick! I made pork chops and gnocci with a lot of broccoli and beans! Yummy!
congrats Bigmuther - great news.

Re business premises, yes was once a b and b so registered as business but has been empty for years!

I get smp only which last time was a real bugger as I had a company car and this meant I ended up with less than if I hadn't had a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I know having a company is great BUT I couldn't drive for ages because of the c section and THEN the fing thing broke down so didn't have it for ages...........This time round am on far less as only p/t but where we used to live it was excessively expensive for child care so couldn't afford to go back full time (madness I agree but would have been losing £100 + per week!) am thinking of going back earlier this time and researching my work from home options. For all their sins my co is quite flexible with my hours etc and so i know if there is a problem they will be majorly understanding. (I hope!)

Chulita · 05/02/2010 21:52

Lol cakey he'll never know if you don't tell him. Don't know how you can eat so late, I'm usually starving by 5!
Good night all, happy weekend!
Hope something lovely happens to make it go quick for girlsyearapart - I've been in a similar situation when DH has been on tour for a few months and it's rubbish!

Missus84 · 05/02/2010 21:59

Nikalah - yes, I only want positive stories too! The friend who is giving me her birth pool had a lovely birth at home, 8 hours and only needed gas and air for the last 2.5. It was her first baby too.

My mum is really, really against the idea of me having a homebirth. Unfortunately she had 2 emergency c-sections and one elective which she thinks was due to pelvic disproportion - I'm a very similar shape to her, so she's worried I'll have the same problem. Mentioned it to the midwife though and she was very dismissive

soontobefatnat · 05/02/2010 23:37

bigmutha brilliant news!!

This morning I had my follow up scan after last week's scary one. Whatever problem they thought they saw has disappeared - we had quite a fraught week and the relief is unbelievable! I think we went in expecting the worst, and came out with an armful of amazing scan pictures (including some 3D ones) a perfect looking baby and really low risk of Downs, etc.

Best day ever!
