Morning ladies,

Look at all you ladies buying stuff now, feeling quite jealous as already have a lot for dd so don't need to buy anything yet! (Boo!) If it helps we started with a moses basket as it was in our bedroom and the cot was just ENORMOUS for my dd (she was 6lbs!) and she was in that for a good 4 months I think, also meant could move it around the house - not with her in it though!

We then "inherited" a cot that my sisters kids had used but bought a new mattress - was lovely actually to do as my parents bought for my sister as she had 2 in cots at one time, was from Mothercare so am looking jealously at the sleigh cot! But does the job and felt justified in splashing out on the most expensive mattress!!!!!! (well its going to get use again now so feeling double justified!!) Now dd is in a bed - her choice! - which again is 25th hand but she loves and stays in at the moment.

I was trying to be helpful above but have proabably made a bit of a pigs ear. All I would say is if you have mates who offer to lend you things - lovely as it is to have brand new, somethings are just worth borrowing imo. Moses Basket - fab you can borrow the basket but make it your own with a few sheets and a new mattress - because really you are only going to use it briefly!
(I still think worth having though when they are small!)

we have a Bugaboo Cam, which I love but we also have simple Maclaren too as it is useful if going away, in addition to that I seem to have aquired a Quinny Zapp - I love it but my DH is too tall for it, and a double Urban Mountain Buggy which my sister didn't need anymore - (Maclaren and Urban buggy is my sisters) Sadly would have liked to choose a double buggy of my own but don't feel that we can do that as we have them - would ebay but not sure my sister would be too chuffed!

Ooh I do bang on don't I - sorry ladies am trying to avoid working at all costs!

Doodleydoo · 02/02/2010 10:23

On a tangent - with my heightened sense of smell have really started to notice things in my office - too many people smoke for a start and it is minging (from an ex smoker too!) and the woman opposite me obviously has drinking issue - she absolutely reaks everyday of booze - stale booze and also something to cover it with. Makes my stomach roil!

Love Phoebe as a name, is on my list already - Layla also reminds me of Eric C. Am sure have mentioned it before but Eloise came on the radio the other day and thought that was quite cool.

Alicetheinvisible · 02/02/2010 10:27

I would reccomend getting a swinging crib if at all possible. DD settled so well in it, and if they start stirring in the night, often a slight nudge of the crib helps them drift off again.

Rubena · 02/02/2010 10:32

I read that rare steak is fine as long as it's sealed really week on the outside - except I can't see logic in that myself, but if I find it i'll post it! I wouldn't worry though.

I didn't bother with the travel systems as I used the Bbay Bjorn carrier so much when ds was little since it was just so much easier to take him from car to wearing him as he barely woke during the transition at that age.
I really like my Phil & Teds buggy and will be buying the doubles kit for it soon as ds will be just 19 months when dc2 arrives. I highly recomemend it or something similar which has a soft carry cot which you can slide in and out of the buggy plus tiny one can sleep in it initially and it's so much easier
DriedApricots - funny you said that - my 6 yo niece told me to "have a girl called Laylah please" I loled and asked her dad where that came from and he doesn't know where in Surrey are you?

Rubena · 02/02/2010 10:33

sealed really week??? I meant really well!!! I have looked and can't find anything to support that now but I'd say if you aren't sick now don't worry!

mrsZaC · 02/02/2010 10:34

thanks alice & ducky feeling better now so I just think it's me being paranoid, nothing to worry about on the knicker-checking front so far so I'll probably just leave it...

ducky I LOL at your moses basket, crib and cot! tee hee, was thinking about a moses basket, so will probably go with that.

nichy I wouldn't worry about the steak... it will all be digested now anyways... maybe phone and ask just to put your mind at rest tho.

Alicetheinvisible · 02/02/2010 11:35

I went to bed with a headache last night due to being dyhydrated (most likely) have still got headache today and it won't shift.

Ok, so turns out i am possibly not just dehydrated as i have just covered the bathroom in sick (sorry tmi) and not in a ms kind of way. I am a bit suspicious that i caught something from the hospital (cardiology app) yesterday as they are currently closed to visitors due to a vomiting bug could just be a coincidence of course.... Feeling very sorry for myself now.

bouncingblueberries · 02/02/2010 11:52

Oh alice be very careful sweetie - if you're sick again get someone to come and look after you. A friend of mine caught a vomiting bug while pregnant and although there was no risk to the baby, she became very dehydrated very quickly. Try and drink some fluids and phone your midwife if you're worried.

Sorry - don't want this post to send you into a panic but just be careful and put your health first. As I said, no risk to my friend's baby (didn't affect the pregnancy in any way), but she was very poorly.

Alicetheinvisible · 02/02/2010 12:36

Thanks

Just trying a cup of tea and a piece of bread, see how i get on.

neenz · 02/02/2010 12:37

Alice hope you feel a bit better now. I find water much more appetising when I put a bit of fruit juice in it to sweeten it a bit. Keep your fluids up especially if you are being sick.

Rare steak - I wouldn't worry if it hasn't given you food poisoning, its probably fine. Pregnancy is just one worry after another isn't it.

We had a bedside cot for the twins which has a side which drops right down so you can put the cot right up against your bed for easy access in the night. We never had moses baskets cos of the expense of two but I would use one now if someone offered to lend me one. They are handy for having somewhere for the baby to nap downstairs even if you are not going to use it at night.

I second the thought that you should beg borrow and steal as much stuff as you can - save your cash for after as you'll need it! I bought a lot of my stuff second hand on ebay, furniture at Ikea etc. I know people who spent loads at mama's and papa's on a lovely colour co-ordinated nursery and said afterwards it was such a waste of money cos the baby doesn't care and once you get all the toys etc in there it is not so colour co-ordinated any more!

lovesaruby · 02/02/2010 12:56

Hello ladies - I was on the August bus in the ttc talk but am obviously pretty dense in that Ive only just found this! Recognise some of you, congrats to all! Im due 20th and am still waiting on my 12 wk scan - next tuesday. I think Ive been on the internet too much this time as Im feeling petrified that therell be something wrong at the scan. With my previous two pregnancies I had m/s til at least 16 weeks and by then Id been provided with a reassuring bump so I never worried there was anything amiss. This time my m/s faded away about 2 weeks ago so now I just feel normal again. My dh has been working in Germany the past 3 weeks so havent really wanted to worry him over the phone with my concerns - he just thinks because this pg is different it must mean a boy after our two girls! Helpful! Ive had no pain, no spotting and am weeing for England so why am I feeling so anxious? Has anyone else felt like this only to have a perfect 12 week scan? I should be grateful I dont feel rough anymore but Im not

growingbump2 · 02/02/2010 13:12

Hey lovesaruby! Glad to see you on here, I did wonder where you had got to! We have the same due date, my scan is on Thursday have'nt posted on here much until this week as I was so nervous but feeling much more confident as we reach week 12! I've not had much ms this time, with DS I was sick all the time! Have you got any signs of a bump yet? I can't wait to stop looking fat and bring on the bump!

growingbump2 · 02/02/2010 13:20

Is ther anyone who has any experience of a travelling with a two year old and a baby? We are likely to be moving in a few months and will have to do a fair bit of travelling back and forward by plane or ferry. I don't think a double buggy will be needed as DS will be 2.5 when baby arrives but will need something light which folds away to nothing and also reclines as ferry journey is 4 hours long? Any suggestions?

lovesaruby · 02/02/2010 13:24

Hello growing, nice to see you! Im not sure about a bump (which sounds really daft!) but think it depends on what Im wearing - yesterday someone said I looked pg but today I dont think I can see anything! Its clearly too much cake or water retention (probably cake!). Im glad Im not the only nervous one - youd think by No.3 Id be taking it in my stride! I'll look out for your scan news on Thursday, good luck!

bouncingblueberries · 02/02/2010 13:24

neenz totally agree with borrowing as much as you can. I've just been to Mamas & Papas for a nosey and the cot I had my heart set on I'm actually not so sure about now. It just looks a bit plastic in real life, whereas the ikea one that I had dismissed, actually looks like it's made from wood! Plenty of time to decide I guess.

lovesaruby plenty of paranoid girls on this thread and plenty that have been convinced there's nothing but pies and chocolate in there only to see a wriggling bean at the 12 week scan.

Missus84 · 02/02/2010 13:28

NichyNoo - I've not heard that about freezing meat - but tbh I haven't been too strict about food restrictions. It's all based on worse case scenario. Yes, it is possible that rare meat, pre-packed salad or runny eggs etc will give you food poisoning. But I have never got food poisoning before so I think the chance of getting it now is negligible. Has rare steak ever made you sick before? If not I wouldn't worry.

FloweryBoots · 02/02/2010 13:32

Oh heck, I just can't keep up with this thread. There just isn't time when you have to fall asleep by about 8.30 - 9pm!

Am going to very rudely ignore all previous posts as don't have time to try and catch up on the pages and pages just now, and just drop in to say had my scan yesterday and there really is a baby in there, with arms and legs and a head and a spine and a heart, that I could see beating, and everything! (And phew, it is just one!)

Awkward little thing was sat on it's head so couldn't do the nuchal measurement despite all the best efforts and tricks of the sonogrpaher to make the little thing shift, and about 4 scans! I didn't really want it any way so I'm not fussed but DH was dissapointed. I can have a blood test in a few weeks instead anyway if we want.

Hope everyone else is well. I will try to catch up soon!

ElusiveMoose · 02/02/2010 13:42

Wow, you lot are talking a lot today .

Congrats on the happy scans, it's so nice to see good news. Though I agree with whoever said earlier that once you've had the scan you kind of forget you're pregnant, because you're not so permanently worried any more.

Re cots, I thoroughly recommend the one we got (from M&P). It really was the nicest and best thing we got for DS - really sturdy, and at 28 months it's still plenty big for him. He uses it as a play area as well as a cot - it's big enough for hiding toys and jumping up and down in, etc. Not cheap (and I do confess it was actually ILs who paid, not us) - but I notice it's reduced at the moment [[http://www.mamasandpapas.com/product-sherwood-cot-golden-oak/321697901/type-i/ here].

Would also recommend a Moses basket when they're tiny - easier to have in your room with you, and easier to take to other people's houses when you're visiting. When we moved DS into his own room (at 3 months - very naughty), we put the Moses basket inside the cot for a while, so he could get used to the cot while still having the familiarity of the basket, IYKWIM.

vix206 · 02/02/2010 13:42

lovesaruby I haven't had a scan yet but I do have a home doppler so I know there's a strong heartbeat, and I have felt totally 'normal' for the past 2-3 weeks (Am now 11 weeks). To be fair I haven't been sick once, my main problem was feeling nauseous if I didn't eat copious amounts of carbs, but that really seems to have levelled off now and I am on a more or less normal diet again.

Slightly tender boobs and constant weeing are the only signs for me, my 12 week scan will be done at 14 weeks so a bit of a wait but like I say, doppler picks up very strong heartbeat so that is reassuring enough!

lovesaruby · 02/02/2010 13:52

Hi Vix - thats something I hadnt thought of - perhaps Ill pop off and try and get myself one. I feel a bit annoyed now that the midwife refused to have a listen when I was there for my booking in - she told me its hard to find before 16 weeks so they dont bother! Off to shop....thank you!

Rubena · 02/02/2010 13:53

Agree with what missus said - how often do people get salmonella from a runny egg or ham - not heard of often really, so I don't think people should obsess about it too much... here's an email I was forwarded which should relax us all a little!
(Sorry it's long)

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's !
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking..
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle..
Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.
Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY, no video/dvd films, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.
Only girls had pierced ears! We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...
We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!
RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully's always ruled the playground at school.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL !
And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

NichyNoo · 02/02/2010 14:08

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I have to admit that I didn't phone the GP in the hour she accepts phone calls to ask her.

This is because I looked on the Internet and the risk is very slim (even without freezing).

In Belgium we get blood tests avery month to check for toxoplasmosis and my next one is on 19 Feb. If I have got toxoplasmosis from eating the steak then there is nothing much the doctor can do apart from give me strong antibiotics (which is a risk in itself). If freezing does not kill the bad stuff then the medium/rare steaks I ate in December (before I knew) would have been risky and my blood tests since then have not shown anything nasty.

I might be being irrespionsible to not ask the doctor but I figure it is too late now and if I miscarry because of the steak then it is my own fault and nothing the doctor can do about it now will make any difference. Needless to say I will only eat steks that are burnt to a crisp from now on!

I'm trying to be less stressed then I was in the early stages of pregnancy and this is my attempt to look at things logically, rationally and not panic!

Anyway - glad your scan went well floweryboots I'm hoping my GP will be be able to find a heartbeat with a doppler at my appointment on the 19th - seems like ages since my scan (2 weeks ago!)

DH and I haven't discussed names or cots/prams etc. as we are still too paranoid about jinxing things! I have my 20 week scan on the 23 March so will probably start thinking about things like that then....although it is torture to try and not get too excited already!!!!

Alicetheinvisible · 02/02/2010 14:11

Rubena that is great

Chulita · 02/02/2010 14:11

How dare you say 'Vanilla' is a stupid name?! I think it suits my DS to a tee

Alicetheinvisible · 02/02/2010 14:14

Nichy - a friend of mine had one of her cats tested for toxo when she was pg with dc2 and it came up positive but it never affected her at all.

I may be wrong but i'm sure i read that by the time we become adults most people have been exposed to it and are immune anyway.
