Here we go ladies - I'll C&P the stats in a tick. Don't forget to add the gender on if you find out at your scan

fillybuster · 25/02/2010 15:43

Well, let's see now...Medea poisoned her 2 kids and sent their dead bodies as a wedding present to her ex-husband Jason after he ditched her for a better prospect. On the one hand, he was a total dick and dumped her once she got him safely home with the golden fleece, on the other, she turned traitor on her father and her homeland for a pretty face. So they probably deserved each other. Shame Jason seems to have had better PR though...

Circe is pretty dear to my heart...I spent about a year researching the disempowerment through mythographical narrative of near eastern goddesses into classical witches, and she's the coolest by far...she didn't do anything wrong, as such, but she did turn all odysseus' men into pigs and wasn't best pleased when he eventually left her to go home. Waay cooler than Calypso, tho...

gizmo · 25/02/2010 15:44

adds Circe to list

fillybuster · 25/02/2010 15:59

Best defined (only? Penelope hardly qualifies...) feminist in the odyssey. Nonetheless, likely to raise eyebrows now...anyone who does recognise the name just thinks 'witch' and 'pigs'. Shame really...

Penelope, anyone?

mampam · 25/02/2010 16:04

Hi all, hope you are all well?

Sounds like the meet up went well. I'm very at these meet ups as it would just be me, myself and I at a Devon one .

Filly yes I live about 10 miles further along the coast from Dartmouth. I went to school there and my Dad works on one of the ferries going across the Dart. Dittisham is a beautiful place and I have made a promise to myself that this summer I will have a river cruise up to Totnes as I haven't done it since I was a kid.

Got a bit with a MW on the phone on Monday . After my cancelled appointment on Friday I wanted to speak directly to my MW but I don't have a non-emergency number. DH had to phone GP for an appointment so whilst he was on the phone he asked for my MW non-emergency number to be told that my MW no longer worked in the area . but they would get a MW to give me a call. Yet again there were no MW appointments at the Health Centre (in the village) so I would have to make an appointment to go to MW in the local town. By the time the MW gave me a call I was steaming. The poor woman bore the brunt of my frustrations. I just started ranting at how it wasn't on that I had to keep traipsing into the town and could never get a local appointment when I can barely walk. I said how annoyed I was that I hadn't been told that my MW had left and was annoyed with her anyway for not making my Physio referral, leaving me in agony and in limbo for over a month and finally I told her I wanted a non-emergency number because I was fed up of not being able to speak to anyone when it wasn't an emergency.

Poor woman!!

So I saw a different MW today who said that MW services are crap in this area and she feels like in the last year they have gone back 10 years! She wants me to write a letter of complaint to the head of midwifery at the hospital in Plymouth (although I'm having baby in Torquay, MW's here are under Plymouth authority.....confusing!)
Anyway 'baybeeee' (bumps nickname said in stupid gooey voice) is fine and while I'm at the hospital having my sphicter scan MW has arranged for me to have a GTT so I don't have to fanny around here trying to get an appointment! Which seems to be near on impossible at the moment. I have huge babies yet this is the first time I have ever had a GTT .

Had Physio yesterday, well, acupuncture really, not really sure it's doing any good but will keep on with it. Gets me out of the house for a couple of hours

Millymollymoo think it was you who had a theory on how much your bump moved = how well they slept? I found the opposite with mine. DD wriggled like anything and she slept through the night from 7 weeks. DS on the otherhand hardly ever moved inside me and he didn't sleep through until he was a year old! This one's a real wriggler so I'm hoping it'll be like DD!

Sorry for ranting selfish post. Will have a proper read later xx

mampam · 25/02/2010 16:06

filly I know a little girl called Penelope, her parents call her Penny for short.

greensnail · 25/02/2010 16:18

mampam I don't blame you at all for getting angry with the midwife. I couldn't believe it when you said you just turned up to find a note on the door saying your appointment was cancelled. When I had one cancelled I got a phone call telling me, and making sure I was happy to wait another week for another one (otherwise they would have fitted me in somewhere else). On top of everything else you're having to deal with I would have gone crazy!
And I'll be up for a Devon meetup but it won't be for some months yet. I won't know anyone locally so it would be lovely to get our babies together. I know you'll probably be quite far from me (I haven't really got my head around the Devon geography yet) but I don't mind a drive.

I've just noticed what the time is. DD went down for a nap at 1.30, now I'm wondering where the last 3 hours have gone and hoping she's ok. Better go and investigate!

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/02/2010 16:45

I know an ex MNer with a Penny. Lovely name. I also know an MNer with a Nestor. But I know nothing of Greek history and all that, so have no clue of the meanings of any of them.

mampam - your rant at the mw sounds very cathartic. It at least seems to have got her to sort out a few things for you. Do make sure that you write the complaint letter won't you?

at Barbie's being Nancy. Anyone fancy 'Barbie' for a girl?

Glad the holiday was fab filly.

Agree with all re the blokes on 'One Born'. Looking forward to joyless joy's labour next week.

OP posts:
MillyMollyMoo · 25/02/2010 16:57

mampam I prefer your theory to mine, so far if this pregnancy was anything to go by, he'd be a first and only child, so my goodness he needs to be a "good" baby.

Oh by the way I love your taste in clothes so if you want to sell any boys emile et rose, I'd be happy to help you find the girls versions.

LittleRobbo · 25/02/2010 19:31

Evening lovely ladies

Not sure if its across the country or not,but our Mothercare has a sale on, 50% off nursing/maternity bras,i managed to get some really pretty ones that actually fit me (i am a 38E at the moment)

Loving all the names coming up,we've kind of settled on Summer Rae or Summer Florence, but i saw Eliza written somewhere today and i thought, ooh i like

LaTrucha · 25/02/2010 20:21

I still haven't found the name that catches my eye and makes me say, 'Now how can I sneak that one past DH?'

If you want to know how, wait until you've just had the baby, turn to the baby and say, 'That's not xyz, it's [insert chosen name here]' and then pass out. That's what I did.

It did help that we were in the local paper the next day, so we couldn't go back on it.

minimoonumbertwo · 25/02/2010 21:13

Real quickie and prob waaaaay behind but another vote for bepanthen here & also i don't think the calpol the dr gives you on prescription is as good as the real stuff, doesn't have that magic ingredient imo!

my labour with ds was fine, 6 hours officially i think, i found that it wasn't so much painful as i just couldn't get comfortable which got steadily worse. By the time it got to the pushing bit i was kind just in the zone and tbh i don't really remember it so it can't have been that bad!!

filly welcome back, wooleey grange sounds joyous, might have to look out for some special offers! mampam i really feel for you, hope you get some decent advice soon. and i hope your baby theory is right as this bump is super busy.

sorry everyone else, too difficult to keep up!

ds has got conjunctivitis at mo & is totally miserable, am a bit peeved too as had lots of lovely things planned which we've had to cancel, aah well.

madamefreckle · 25/02/2010 23:08

Filly - Medusa??!!

madamefreckle · 25/02/2010 23:28

My mum favours Penelope for a girl - suggesting Nell for short which I quite like... but not so keen on the Penelope bit, heard of Nell short for Ellen too though.

Also like Eliza LittleRobbo - it's on my ever-lengthening short-list.

What do you think of Tara? I just really like the meanings: (Gaelic meaning 'hill', Sanscrit meaning 'star'...also Buddha's wife I think)

Re. labour: My first labour was 32 hours - inc. two sleepless nights. Hoping this time will be a tad quicker! Having said that, time becomes a pretty warped concept during labour anyway!

Been in a bit of a panic today as woke up with an uncomfortable tingling/burning feeling in my right calf. Worried it might be a sign of DVT - my sister was diagnosed with one just after giving birth. Couldn't get through to docs but it seems to have eased off a bit now so hoping it's nothing to worry about. Anyone else had anything like this?

greensnail · 26/02/2010 08:50

Morning all. How's your calf this morning madamefreckle? Does it feel any hotter than the other one when you touch it and does it look any bigger?
Tara is a lovely name, my cousin has a little girl called Tara who is gorgeous. I can never get over the association of a Tara I went to school with who I didn't like, but so long as you don't know her then you're probably safe enough with it!

Boobz · 26/02/2010 08:52

Hi everyone...

...room for one more? I'm due on June 9th and obviously very late to the party. I originally thought I was due August so initially joined that ante natal thread, and then went to my nuchal scan thinking I was just 11 weeks or so, and turned out to be 18!

So I hope I'm not too late... I know it's always mad trying to keep up with everyone on threads like this as they are HUGE, but I'll give it a go! I'm a pretty active poster on the home birth thread in the Child Birth topic (any other home birthers, or hoping to be, on here?) and had my last baby in March last year, so am still on the March post-natal thread! DD will be a grand old 14.5 months when this one comes along (whoops) so looking forward to coping with a newborn and running around after a toddler.... can't be that hard, can it?!

Oh, and DD is called Penelope, so definitely gets my vote fillybuster..

wheredidmyfeetgo · 26/02/2010 10:29

Hi Boobs I have posted a few times on the homebirth thread. I am going for a homebirth this time with DC3. And I'm go on a Doula training course at the end of this month.
I have two DS's and there is just 14 months between them. I found being pregnant with DS2 harder than actually having them both here. I'm hoping it will be the same case this time around as I'm definatley finding it hard work being pregnant and looking after a 3.1yo and a 23month old!

gizmo · 26/02/2010 10:33

Hi Boobz

Nice to see you - bit of a shock for your nuchal, from the sound of things!

Quite a few people here homebirthing or considering it. I'm likely to, if things turn out OK with this pregnancy and so are Justbeme, Nizzy, Millymolly - sorry if I've missed anyone out!

mampam · 26/02/2010 10:49

Boobz you are more than welcome on this thread and you certainly are not too late to join. The more the merrier

You are going to be one busy lady when this little one arrives!! You'll find lots of others on here who when the new arrival comes will have a gazillion DC's under the age of 5 (ok,ok not quite a gazillion just 3 or 4!!).
I consider myself to be the sensible one , my DD is 10 and DS is 6 and then there's this little bump too. It's great because I've got 2 little slaves nappy changers/cuddlers raring to go and best of all in a few years time DD will make the perfect little babysitter (although she might not be so enthusiastic...he he he).

greensnail you'll get your head around the Devon geography sooner or later, although DH is from just outside Preston, Lancashire and I still can't get my head around the geography of that area, no matter how hard I try! [thicko emoticon].
We'll definitely have a Devon meet up when you're all settled in and hopefully by then you'll have your bearings, we'll have had the babies and I'll be all healed

madamefreckle I get a tingling/burning sensation in my right calf from time to time but I've come to the conclusion that I may have a varicose vein under the surface of the skin. It's been there a little while, nature of my job I suppose as I'm on my feet the whole time. It definitely feels worse being PG.
I think if it were DVT it would feel like it were deep down, would be painful and the skin would possibly be red and sore. Keep your eye on it and mention it next time you see MW or GP.

LittleRobbo I'm still in my normal G cups, God help me if my boobies get any bigger not sure I'll find anything to hold these puppies up!! Especially without underwired support!

Millymollymoo Your baby will be an angel I'm sure. I'm a real believer that babies pick up on your temperament. My DD was an angel because I was a very chilled out naive 19/20 year old, nothing phased me and I had no idea what to expect so didn't know what was coming. I truly thought that all babies were like DD and thought that the other women in my post-natal group whose babies didn't sleep/feed etc were doing something wrong.
With DS I was stressed out, depressed, DH (now ex) wasn't interested, was being a shit and told me he didn't want the baby. DS enters into the world and he was huge (10lb 14oz) and fed all the time which meant me up all bloody night long for a year and was as stressed as hell. He was a real bugger up until the age of about 4 but now I'm more relaxed and have DH and he is a great SD to DC's, DS has turned into a lovely little boy.

CSWS yes, I will write the letter. Very cathartic getting it all off my chest although probably not so nice for the MW. Seem to have relaxed into the doing nothing mode now and feel a lot more chilled out about it too.

DD thought it was hilarious and was a little when I told her that there are probably thousands of women in the US with the name Barbie!!

Bought my first baby purchase this week.
This changing bag. Got it on Ebay for £11.40 including P&P

GibberingGinger · 26/02/2010 10:57

CSWS - don't be too hard on Joyless Joy from "one born every minute". So far her experience had been very similar to my time with DD1 and believe me its very frustrating. I was completely cracking up after 36 hours in hospital listening to other ladies in labour whilst I couldn't even get started and the hospital giving you no information whatsoever about anything. Will be interesting to see what happens next week with her.

Hi Boobz, welcome to June, as you predicted its a fairly busy thread now.

Madamfreckle, hope your calf is ok today, I find I get a lot of leg cramp during pregnancy, and even if it doesn't develop into cramp I get tingly muscles a lot.

MrsDmamee · 26/02/2010 11:15

morning Everyone.

mampam i dont blame you for ranting, and maybe they *mw needed to hear it, as you are NOT getting an adequate service for your needs in this PG.
And as another sufferer of SPD its just not fair to be left wondering why no one is referring you and when you are going to get some sort of relief from the constant pain, the last thing anyone needs is to be left hanging with cancelled appoinments and lack of physio.

ok i better stop before i start ranting now, im just so tired past few days.

my DS2 slept through from 5 weeks and was over active inside i use to wonder if he had a bicycle at times non stop....ds1 didnt move much ..if i can remember back that far he is a teenager now and at the moment doesnt get the whole concept of sleeping..thinks sleep is boring but he did sleep as a baby from early on too but lost that ability at about 4/5yo

greensnail · 26/02/2010 11:40

Welcome Boobz nice to have someone to share the due date with and make me feel better about my 17 month age gap!

mampam that's a lovely bag. I'm still searching for my ideal bag, will have another look at ebay today I think.

gibberingginger I did feel very sorry for Joyless Joy and her experience made me feel very grateful for my fast induction, but I'm afraid it didn't stop me finding her totally hilarious!

Sorry if typing's a bit dodgy, I'm feeding DD at the moment. Now I'm wondering if its possible to tandem feed and type.... what are your experiences CSWS?

CantSleepWontSleep · 26/02/2010 14:46

Hmm, don't think I tried tandem and typing at the same time greensnail - might be a touch ambitious as you'll need your hands free to stop the two of them from hair pulling/gouging out each others eyes etc .

I have earned my stripes re waiting around during an induction Ginger, so I feel entitled to find Joy joyless! If you wish to know more, then please have a read of my very very long induction thread from last time, here.

Welcome Boobz. What a lovely small age gap. Should be a doddle and I'm a big fat liar.

Lovely change bag mampam. I like the turquoise version best - is that what you've gone for?

Tara always reminds me of Gone With The Wind! Is quite a nice name though.

marmiteaddict · 26/02/2010 17:25

Hi All,

Just trying to catch up after a busy week at work.

Justbeme I hope you are doing ok, and glad you got to meet up with some of the other ladies.

meggy how is your friend doing?

I havent bought anything for the baby yet and havent sorted out it's room either! Feeling like a terrible mother already and I've not even begun .

MIL has very generously offered to buy us the buggy so planning a shopping trip with her at the beginning of April.

We actually got our first baby presents at Christmas - my parents gave us the cutest little felt booties from Nepal - me and DH got one each for Christmas .

Well Im very excited as Im actually going to see a band tonight! Going out and I might even stay up past 11pm!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.
x

chestnut100 · 26/02/2010 18:00

marmiteaddict - don't leave that buggy shopping too late; I ordered mine a few weeks ago and was shocked to find out the lead in time on some models. Mine was 12 weeks, and the assistant told me that twice in the week already there had been ladies crying after having left it fairly late to order and couldn't get the model they wanted in time! Unbeleivable!

I called in to see the mw today re my concerns about not feeling much movement; she had a listen and all sounded well. Apparently some people never feel very much. I was very reassured.

Anyone got plans for the weekend? Absolutely none here!
