Here we go ladies - I'll C&P the stats in a tick. Don't forget to add the gender on if you find out at your scan

MillyMollyMoo · 24/02/2010 15:42

The amount of kicking is relative to how easy the baby is I am convinced. DD2 didn't sleep for 3 years and she kicked like a kangaroo - am wondering if it's too late to change my mind
I've ordered the pram because if I didn't get on with it I'd have ended up carrying him in a rucksack and also seem to have two car seats which is daft as we're on such a tight budget but hey ho.
But that's it, I maybe in denial but I've got sleepsuits, vests and that's it, I guess there's plenty of time.

LaTrucha · 24/02/2010 15:49

I have nothing yet, except what I had for DD.

Oh. I dud buy some M+S scratch mits as they have a long cuff and were the only ones DD couln't get off. We have fond memories. And some ickle pickle baby boy blue socks. Going for the really important stuff here, you can see

I have a lot of people saying things like, 'Oh. Wait and see if I'm finished with the PHIL and Teds' and 'Oh, you can have all my baby boy stuff if this one's a girl' etc - which is fab. I do like to sort, fold and hoard though, so I'm finding it difficult to hold my horses!

MillyMollyMoo · 24/02/2010 15:52

I know exactly what you mean LaTrucha we need to move everyone around within the house but swap bedrooms and none of it can be done until I've saved £1500 for a new window so I am trying so hard to be good and not splash out but I would love to see a line of babygrows blowing in the wind and some outfits too.

perkster · 24/02/2010 17:46

Hello all,

I have to say that I do know of a baby called Achilles, though he is Italian (born and lives out there) that said I have been told it's an unusual name for kids out there let alone anywhere else so it will be interesting to see how it pans out!

I have been very lucky and had donations of baby stuff from lots of people resulting in us wondering if we need to buy anything at all, other than boring essentials when Rolfaroo does make an appearance.

A good tip my mate gave me was to make sure you get Sudocream on prescription to cut down on the costs. I realise it depends on how good your doctor is but babies usually have red bottoms at some point! She got a vat of the stuff.

She also said to get Gaviscon on prescription. I haven't suffered too badly yet but saw the doc a few weeks ago and got a small bottle from them just in case

We don't have names settled upon but finding girls names we like is harder than for the boys though we don't know what we are having. This is because the surname will be 'er' at the end and we've realised most girls names have this sound at the end as well - Anna, Matilda, Flora etc etc. I guess we think it may make a baby girl sound a bit 'wet' apologies to anyone whose name is like this!!! I should also point out that I am not expecting any baby girl of ours to necessarily be a tom-boy either.

Right must go, off to preggers yoga tonight

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/02/2010 17:51

I am going to disagree strongly with you perkster - hope you have on a hard hat! Getting stuff on prescription just because you 'can' and not because you 'need' to is unacceptable IMO. It uses scarce NHS resources and where it's not a necessity is born out of pure greed on the part of the person getting the prescription.

Aside from that, sudocreme is rubbish for sore bums. Metanium good if they are sore. Sudocreme more of a prevention thing.

OP posts:
MillyMollyMoo · 24/02/2010 18:09

When I was on income support living on £80 a week for me and DD I couldn't even get calpol for her on prescription so it does vary Dr to Dr.
I'm not sure all babies get a sore bum either, I still have the unopened sample pot from my bounty pack in 2002.

perkster · 24/02/2010 19:09

Cantsleepwontsleep please don't think I am advocating people just getting stuff because they 'can' I have suffered quite a bit from indigestion in the past and heartburn has started to creep up on me. Although I am entitled to take time off for dr appts I don't want to have to keep taking time off so was trying to clear up a few things in one go, that was all.

Thanks for the advice on bottoms and creams I guess I have a lot to learn about all of this sort of thing!

MrsDmamee · 24/02/2010 19:44

hi All.

i seem to be fighting through tiredness today, i dont know what is up with me nearly fell asleep at lunchtime.

ive nothing at all bought for this new dc, ds2 seems to be doing well though. He got a brand new bed today as his cotbed will be needed for the new arrival and we wanted him well settled into a bed before he felt baby was stealing his cot.
And he also needs the next stage of carseat too and as we wont be changing cars it will help with the limited space in back for a teenager and two little ones.
so im feeling quite sorry for dc3, nothing much will be bought for he/she.("Our baby" as DS2 calls my bump)

As for names DH and i have same initials, luckily i seldom use my married surname never changed it offically. But we still have same 1st intial and the girls name we like has also the same initial so we arent sure whether to use or have it as a middle name instead.
and the boys name we like can be used for a girl too so it might be the middle or 1st name if we have DD and 1st name if we have a DS.

MrsDmamee · 24/02/2010 19:48

ps: i also find sudocreme more of a prevention than a cure, and used either bepanthan or morhulin for actual nappy rash breakouts.

And balmex when in US on holidays

MonkeyMargot · 24/02/2010 21:42

I find Bepanthen is the only thing that works on sort bots. It's magical.
DH likes Sudocrem for spots though! He sometimes comes to bed wearing nothing but an Adam Ant-esque streak of the stuff across his nose. (This virtually counts as kinky in the monkey house these days, so tame are our lives!)

First labour - have got lots of friends who had straightforward first labours. Mine was long but it wasn't hellish.

I watched One Born every minute for first time last night. Not sure if it's the team doing the editing or reality, but all the blokes come across as ignorant, unfeeling morons.

NizzyNoodles · 24/02/2010 21:56

Just a quick one - I had a fine first labour and even better second one (so hoping the trend continues!) and I've found that Bepanthen is the one that sorts out bottoms best in our house.

justbeme · 24/02/2010 22:05

Just popping in to say that I really enjoyed my first Mumsnet meet up last night and am very glad I made the effort to go. Food was nice and so was the company! So thanks for that. Hope you all got home ok.

Saw the Midwife today and she was lovely, gave me a kiss and cuddle as I left and she says she has helped many mums with Hypnobirthing and she is happy for a home birth too!! Also heard the heartbeat for the first time and DD2 even got up on the coach and listened to her own tummy noises!!

gizmo · 25/02/2010 08:59

Goodname,

I think the thing about first births is you haven't set your personal benchmark for 'good' . I do know a number of people who have had straightforward and rapid (less than 12 hours) first births, but even for them, I doubt they'd say it was 'easy'...actually experiencing your first labour is always a revelation!

But the basic thing to remember is that the majority of first labours are normal and don't require any dramatic interventions. So odds are that you will be just fine.

gizmo · 25/02/2010 09:06

Perkster, I know what you mean about girls' names. I was once in a queue at a model railway behind 6 excited little girls, all of whose names ended in 'ia' (Olivia, Julia, Sophia etc)!

Dunno where your taste lies in names, but there are some quite pretty options ending in 'ise' eg

Elise
Eloise
etc

Or there's the 'elles' as mentioned below:

Annabel
Isabelle
etc
...ummm

Hahahaha! I've just realised why I never do babyname threads: I can't actually remember more than 4 names at a time and they're not normally the ones I like.

AlwaysHopeful · 25/02/2010 12:43

MonkeyMargot I agree about the bloke on One Born Every Minute this week. He started out to seem OK, but the rant he had at her in the middle of the night was unbelievable!

Also agreeing with the Bepanthen fans out there. My DD seemed to have lots of nappy rashes and it worked way better than Sudocrem. - which is useful for friction burns/saddle-sores if you ever have the joy of experiencing them!

My first labour was only 7 hours but alomost three of them were "pushing" so it wasn't easy at all! That and I have 6 hours of false labour 36 hours before the real one started so I didn't know where I was up to for a while...

I have a tummy bug this week, so my already sore body is feeling even more beaten up. The next person to tell me how big my bump is might get a black eye..

perkster · 25/02/2010 12:45

gizmo many thanks for the suggestions. I find it hard to remember my relatives and work collegues names at the moment so have to write down any girls names I like or all will be lost in the goldfish bowl that is my brain!

justbeme someone at my preggers yoga class is doing hypnobirthing and says it's really made her feel more confident and ready for labour. We are going for a homebirth as well the only conditions they take into consideration are that mum is in good health and didn't live many floors up in a highrise so luckily the Victorian mid-terrace shouldn't cause too many problems

I have a male midwife as my named midwife who is lovely. Anyone else have a man instead of a woman?

herewegrow · 25/02/2010 12:46

long time no post (have been lurking on and off).

Also haven't got a thing for new bubs. Really need to get a double buggy or a tandem but haven't even so much as begun looking yet .

Hoping to borrow my SIL crib again and planning on reusing most of the baby clothes so that will keep the cost down. I do need to get a new car seat though. Better write a wish list.

Just arranged with my boss to take one day off a week as of next week to use up my leave until I go on maternity leave. Will be so nice to only work 4 days but be paid for 5

greensnail · 25/02/2010 14:16

MonkeyMargot My DH gets really irate at the collection of useless men they've had on One born every minute. He's upset it puts all men in a bad light (he was pretty fab when I was in labour )

Another bepanthen fan here. Although agree Metanium can be magic stuff as have used it at work with great results on some horrifically sore adult bottoms, it seems to be the bepanthen that does the trick for DD.

justbeme sounds like you have a really lovely midwife

perkster There's lots of girls names ending in y or ie that you could consider too like, Milly, Molly, Lucy, Peggy, Betty, Libby, Lizzie, Susie, Rosie, Jessie, Bessie, Poppy, Daisy, Maisie....

Just popped into work to give them my MATB1 and tell them that I won't be back after mat leave as I'm moving. Was lovely to see some of my colleagues who I don't really see anymore due to my strange hours and made me feel a bit sad I'll be leaving really.

Oh, and on baby movements - don't panic too much about having a manic baby if you're feeling lots. DD never stopped moving in the womb but she's been a very chilled out baby. I suspect she's going to turn into a nightmare toddler to make up for it though!

LaTrucha · 25/02/2010 14:27

Perkster - lots of lovely traditional ones like Beatrice, Eleanor, Ruth, Elizabeth, Rachel.

gizmo · 25/02/2010 14:29

Beatrice?

Hmmm...that's rather nice.

scribbles note down

LaTrucha · 25/02/2010 14:42

Good strong name. Nearly called dd it.

fillybuster · 25/02/2010 14:48

Well, I'm back from my hols and had to spend an intensive few days catching up at work (came back to discover I have 2 new people in my team, so lots of sudden extra work) which means over a week off MN!!! Eekk!!! So I?m going to attempt a catch up (which might be a bit long) but sorry to anyone I miss?...

Woolley Grange was totally fab and I massively recommend it to all of you who already have dcs in tow for a long weekend away....it manages to be a 'grownup' country house hotel and supremely child friendly all at the same time. Great food, too

No beauty treatments before I left though...the beautician fainted that morning and had to cancel ....so Filly gets to wait a bit longer for her facial and wax

Woofie, your birthday and weekend away both sound totally excellent, so pleased for you

Gizmo - they test for CMV automatically at 10 weeks in Israel...but they test for absolutely everything there...and all my friends were very surprised they don't test in London. Having said that, one of my best friends tested positive during her 2nd preg (and was offered a termination...which like you she would never have considered anyway)...she spent the rest of the pg worried sick and it turned out there was nothing wrong at all. She said she would have much preferred not to have known in the first place....

Chestnut, that tummy bug sounds like hell, no wonder you got scared about the baby?glad you?re both ok now and sounds like a very reassuring hospital experience!

Minimoo - I?ll provide details of castor oil induction nearer the time?believe me, you don?t want to know too much about it right now?..

Welcome perkster As I?m now onto my 3rd, I can say with some certainty that getting sleep is more important than how you sleep, iyswim. Quite frankly, I?d be happy if I could get comfortable in any position!

Meggy, thinking of you and hope you are coping ok?.not much else to add really, so sorry its all so bleak for your friend.

Been thinking of you mampam, sorry to hear the mobility isn?t improving tho Do you live in the Dartmouth/Dittisham area by any chance? We?ve been going there every summer for the last 5 years now and its so beautiful but I can see its not the easiest place to live if you?re not very mobile?.

Sorry things are a bit tough at the moment Madamefreckle - don?t know if it helps, but I come from a family where parental arguments were fairly open and I don?t think it screwed me up?(dh might not agree and comes from a background where everything was always fine on the surface with loads of tension underneath)?but they were also balanced by very public displays of affection ? I thought everyone?s parents snogged in front of them! So I always knew they loved each other, even when things got pretty heated?.does that help? (FWIW, dh?s parents never did this and he is very sold on the open affection stuff?)

LittleRobbo and Madamefreckle, can I join you in the pregnancy-dirt-noticing ocd club please? Its not just the bathroom and kitchen, although they are the worse, but I also find myself getting a bit weird about things like having wet hands after washing them which is very unlike me. At least I know it will pass?.

Justbeme, I?m so sorry, that must be really awful for you and the family. I don?t think that grieving can harm the baby, as long as you are eating, drinking and sleeping properly?.although I imagine that must be easier said than done at the moment

Hope you?re feeling better Greensnail? Exeter/Devon would be really lovely although it will be hard to move?but what a fab bit of the world to be going to!

I?ll set up a London meetup thread today

How long does pregnancy last? Waaaay too long, imho As for sleep??I can?t believe I used to be able to sleep for 12 hours straight through?.staying in the same bed as DH tho, even though we disturb each other all night long ? he would be heartbroken if I suggested he move out (and it is a super king size, so there should be enough room for the 2 of us!)

I?m special needs on the name front, like LaT, except mine has to work in English and Hebrew and be pronounceable/manageable in both. Still pretty stuck this time, as we have used our top boy and girls names already?I hate this bit ? there?s loads of lovely English names out there, but none that work in both languages?.

Classical names that don?t get enough airtime: Medusa, Medea, Priam, Achilles, Nestor, Circe?.(suddenly Filly discovers a use for 8 years studying classics at uni?.) Loving some of the real suggestions?mm, Rafaele?

Sorry if this is the longest post of all time

gizmo · 25/02/2010 14:53

Medea? Actually that's really nice, Filly. As is Circe, now I come to think of it.

Problem with classical names is that you always discover that namesake ate her own son in some terrible greek misunderstanding, the week after the christening.

LaTrucha · 25/02/2010 15:01

It's a pain, isn't it Filly?

Still can't get over the veto of my favourite names the first time round as they meant silly things in Spanish., e.g.

Rebecca- cardigan
Nancy - what Barbies are called in Spanish.
Ella - 'She' in Spanish
Layla - Lelo is 'silly' in Spanish.

Love what we DID end up with though and am trustung that something will turn up for DS (loving writing that now!). ATM short list is Eduardo, Raul and Eder, though I am not in love with any of them.

greensnail · 25/02/2010 15:20

Ooh I like Eduardo LaTrucha. Don't envy you at all though, I find it hard enough to think of names we can both agree on and we only have one language to consider!
