Here we go ladies - I'll C&P the stats in a tick. Don't forget to add the gender on if you find out at your scan

whenwillisleepagain · 11/02/2010 20:32

I just had a quick skim too, as haven't had time to keep up with everyone's news. I'm finding from reading my diary of my last pregnancy that things are happening (on the immune-system-being-crap front) at almost exactly the same times as before - week 23 migraine, which I have never had except when pg, week 24 conjunctivitis, ditto. On a bright note, am so blocked up with cold that I can't taste anything, so am not going for the food with my usual enthusiasm.

Hi to everyone who's joined the thread since I last read it, and commiserations to those of you who've been having worries / a rough time

MonkeyMargot · 11/02/2010 20:33

Evening ladies. Gosh, there's been lots of interesting discussion today (hangs head in shame as recalls writing only of lusting over Phil Spencer, not thought-provoking conversation).

congrats La Trucha on your scan! I'm sure you'll fall head over heels for your little boy as soon as he's here. Boys seem to love their mummies even more than girls (upto a certain age!)

Filly I can understand your frustration with being booked in at 23 weeks. It is an awfully long time between your 15 week appt and scan. Based on your history the odds are everything will be hunkydory - bet you can't wait to get on with it.
Your Doula sounds amazing. I realise you were fortunate in getting a family member, but typically are they as expensive as e.g. a nanny?

Has anyone been watching the Good Wife? I'd forgotten I'd recorded the series, and am just watching the first episode - it's jolly good!

MrsAlwaysRight · 11/02/2010 20:40

Anyone else struggling to keep up with the pace of this thread?! We certainly like to chat

Cadmum thanks for letting us know how you are getting on.

Sunworshipper glad all looked ok on scan.

Welcome to our new members!

Where is everyone hoping to give birth - home, midwife led unit, hospital?

I'm hoping to go to our very small local midwife led unit where I went to when in labour with DD before being transferred to main hospital when BP got too high. That or the new midwife unit at the main hospital so if any problems I can just move floors rather than be transported by ambulance!

Out of interest where in the country/world is everyone based? I understand if you would prefer not to reveal your whereabouts . I'm in Oxfordshire.

MonkeyMargot · 11/02/2010 20:51

MrsAlwaysRight I attempted homebirth with DD but got transferred to hospital (DD was OP). As it's twins this time I will almost certainly be in a highly medicalised environment (not my preferred choice).
I live in West London - are you in rural ox? It's so gorgeous there. We almost moved to Charlbury 18 months ago but I chickened out.

MrsAlwaysRight · 11/02/2010 20:54

MonkeyMargot I grew up in rural Oxfordshire but am now in a small town. I bought my wedding dress from the Bridal shop in Charlbury - it is a lovely area around there.

I've been watching The Good Wife too. Thought "Big" would be in it more though!

MonkeyMargot · 11/02/2010 20:59

It is a lovely part of the world. We are possibly going to move even further out than Oxon now, to Staffs to be near my family (to help out with the DCs).

Yes I was hoping for a bit more Big too. Got to get my cheap kicks from somewhere!

greensnail · 11/02/2010 21:00

MrsAlwaysRight I'm in oxfordshire too! I have to go to the consultant led unit at the JR as I'm under Silver Star. Very much wanted to go to our local midwife led unit to have DD, but it wasn't to be Would definitely still go for that if it was an option for me and have heard that The Spires is lovely too.

Welcome Flossie69 Sounds like you had a difficult time with DS1, really hope things go more smoothly this time for you.

MillyMollyMoo · 11/02/2010 21:09

We're in the North West and am hoping for a home birth, well actually I am having a home birth with my doula but am hoping for a midwife to attend too !

I've had really straight forward births previously so see no good reason to go into hospital.

Is it me or are the weeks flying by now ? Summer soon.

MrsAlwaysRight · 11/02/2010 21:19

Waves to greensnail!

I was on one of the Silver Star wards after having DD. Can't fault the care there. Heard loads of good things about the Spires as well.

Which is your local unit? Mine is Wallingford.

MonkeyMargot Big has definately got something about him!

MillyMollyMoo Love the idea of a homebirth but too scared to go for it. Probably not an option if my BP goes the same way as last time anyway.

greensnail · 11/02/2010 21:25

Mine is Wantage MrsAlwaysRight but we're probably as close to Wallingford as we are to Wantage, so probably not too far from you! Let me know if you fancy meeting for a coffee sometime. Hope your BP doesn't mean we end up bumping into each other at the JR anyway!

MrsAlwaysRight · 11/02/2010 21:28

Greensnail I am in between the two so we are probably fairly close! Will definately have to arrange going for a coffee

greensnail · 11/02/2010 21:42

Sounds good, CAT me if you want to arrange something

MrsAlwaysRight · 11/02/2010 21:46

I'm not signed up to CAT but my email is annaw5531 at hotmail dot com

marmiteaddict · 12/02/2010 10:19

CSWS dont worry marmite is too good to be wasted on non-believers

MrsAlwaysRight Im hoping to give birth in our local midwide led unit. It's got a great reputation and the midwives all seem lovely. I have to say I cant complain at all about the care I've received so far. I was unwell over xmas with a high temperature and I called the midwives to say I was a bit concerned. Later that day I popped in for them to listen to the heartbeat which really put my mind at rest. It seems so variable though depending where you are in the country.

wheredidmyfeetgo · 12/02/2010 10:34

Morning all, godness I can't believe how fast this thread moves. I haven't been on for a week as I was signed off work with nose bleeds and headaches, so I took the oppertunity to rest.

I'm in Swindon and planning a homebirth this time round.

Not too far really from Wallingford and wantage, both lovely places.

I have my 20 week scan this afternoon and am really nervous. For some reason I have a horrible fear that something will be wrong I've said before I think it's because I feel like I'm pushing my luck trying for a 3rd when we already have 2 healthy DS's.
Both DS's were born with very large dimples at the base of their spines, which have turned out to be just that - dimpels, but it still scare me thinking about what it could have been.

Sorry for the me, me, me, I just needed to write it down and clear my head. Hopefully I'll be able to come back on later and say all is well.

georgee · 12/02/2010 11:06

greensnail how's your bump today? Hope it has re-inflated. When I had the norovirus (and was therefore a bit dehydrated) mine went right down - I think we forget how much of it is water rather than baby!

For all the Oxon girls, I used to live in Burford during my teen years. Dad and Mum were there for 12 years altogether. I LOVE Oxon, would move back there in a flash!

gizmo · 12/02/2010 13:08

Alright ladies? Nice to see a few more potential homebirthers Millymollymoo Wheredid I think you have to be a very cool customer not to be nervous before a scan. I was in the waiting room this morning thinking how miserable everyone looked when it dawned on me that they were all probably doing the same as me: silently crossing their fingers and praying.

Nickytwotimes A WEEK?!! Good lord woman, that wasn't a stomach bug, that was mumsnet withdrawal symptoms. Honestly, going cold turkey like that can make your really ill.

Previously...in Gizmo's pregnancy stream of consciousness: the 20 week scan revealed a section of bright/echogenic bowel.

In this morning's exciting episode the appointment with my local Fetal Medicine Centre was inconclusive. I didn't get the outcome I was hoping for (that the bright bowel was a result of the low quality machine the original sonographer had been using) - the bright bowel is definitely there. However the most likely cause is debris in the amniotic fluid caused by a previous bleed, which the baby swallows and which gives a positive result on the scanner. Sure enough, with a very high quality machine and a few hefty pokes in my bump, the sonographer was able to stir up a cloud of crap, basically. Yes, it seems I have dustbunnies in my uterus.

So that's the most likely explanation, but I've also had bloods taken for a full tox screen and a genetic profiling for cystic fibrosis. The Good Thing about that is that DH has to have his bloods done for genetic screening too - at last he gets to play an active part in antenatal testing ! I'll also be going back for a 32 week scan to check if the symptom is stable or progressing.

And then...just 'to be thorough' the sonographer decided to doppler ultrasound the uterine arteries, checking blood flow on my side of the placenta. Which turned up a pretty severe 'notch' in the flow of blood through one artery. Apparently this can often resolve itself by 24 weeks, but if it doesn't it can be associated with higher risks for pre-eclampsia or slow weight gain in the baby. Oh joy. So I'm back for another scan at 24 weeks.

Still calm - actually the numbers in terms of increased risk are not that terrifying, as far as I can make out - and always happy to have extra scans, but there is a sort of weariness creeping in here. Don't like the feeling that the problems are multiplying rather than resolving themselves. Still, there's loads of time for things to get sorted out, so thank heavens for screening, I suppose.

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/02/2010 13:30

Oh it does sound like they were very thorough gizmo, which has got to be a good thing in itself, aside from the fact that they didn't actually see that anything is definitely wrong, so I'll give you a yay for that!

Had my scan this morning too. All fine, although baby was being awkward with its positioning apparently, so it took her a while to get some of the views that she wanted. Still, she saw everything that she needed to in the end, and we (just) managed to resist finding out the sex. Dd wanted the sonographer to just tell her whether it was a girl or not, but sonographer correctly predicted that it wouldn't stay a secret for long if she did!

Worryingly, considering how many pregnant women they must see, the sonographer remembered me from my last pregnancy!

Maybe filly can addd me as a 'surprise' once she's back from her scan, so that we don't have hundreds of list updates in one day .

OP posts:
wheredidmyfeetgo · 12/02/2010 13:40

Gizmo Good news about the "Dustbunnies in your uterus". Fingers crossed the notch will sort itself out.

cantsleep Glad your scan went well and well done for resisting finding out.

DF is desperate to find out again this time but I would really like a surprise- especially as it's hopefully going to be a homebirth. We want him to "catch" and discover what sex the baby is.

I'm sat here trying to work but not achieving much. Only an hour till I leave as my scan is at 3pm.

MrsDmamee · 12/02/2010 14:03

hi ALL.
havent been on all week, its just been one of those weeks busy busy and then my poor ds got sick

went for my 20 wk routine visit with my doc and she was concerned about the pain i was having while she was checking fundus etc...it was actually hurting me while she was pressing down on my abdomen.
so i had to go for a scan, baby is fine my own doc says it could be muscle strain and the doc in hospital said it could be a fibroid. Always something it seems in this pg after having 2 extremely quiet symptom free pgs!!

i think my DH is considering leaving me behind(in hosp and collecting me in june) the next time we have to make trip to hospital

but the nice news for this week is my DH felt baby kick. seems way too early but i can actually feel a wee elbow or knee poking out.

hello to any newbies, and with regard to homebirths i dont think DH would allow me and i had a emc-section last time too. but id love if it was possible just to have baby at home and then just get into my own bed and feel so relaxed.

NizzyNoodles · 12/02/2010 14:14

Just had a letter in the post for a test for gestational diabetes (GTT I think?) - does this mean anything to anyone? I think it's because this time they actually asked me how much I weighed whereas in the last 2 pregnancies no-one has been interested. Doesn't matter to them that I actually started this pregnancy at the lightest weight I've been in the 5 years since I came back from honeymoon....

I'm in Bedfordshire so sort of fall into the Hertfordshire group. Another one for homebirth here too.

Had my 22wk check up with the GP yesterday which was uneventful but heard the heartbeat which was nice. He did another blood test as my thyroid was borderline underactive at the start of this pregnance so will wait until Tuesday for the results of that. Then went and had my swine flu vaccination this morning so have definitely read all the interesting magazines at the doctors now....

Glad that scans are going ok and fingers crossed that any follow ups just show there are no problems.

Have skimmed a lot so I'm bound to have missed something important - things definitely move fast in the June club!!

greensnail · 12/02/2010 14:35

Hooray for your good scan CSWS and good luck for this afternoon wheredidmyfeetgo. Gizmo couldn't help but at the thought of dust bunnies in your uterus. Whenever my bump is being very active I tend to joke that he's busy cleaning up the mess that DD left behind! Poor little thing, I've already tarnished him with DH's obsession for tidying (DD definitely has my messy streak!). Anyway, its good that they were very thorough and haven't shown up anything that sounds too serious at the moment. I think when you're find yourself under the fetal medicine bods you do tend to end up getting tested for all kinds of things, which depending on your frame of mind at the time can either be very worrying or very reassuring. Will be thinking of you, and hope you get some firm reassurances at the end of all this testing.

georgee my bump is back to its usual size at present thanks for asking. I've noticed though that it seems to deflate after I've been more active than usual (yesterday after swimming and today after some vigorous bouncing DD up and down at music group). I'm feeling plenty of movement though so don't think its anything to worry about.

Glad your scan showed all was well too MrsDmamee and lovely that your DH got to feel the baby kick already. Mine seems to stop moving as soon as DH comes near me so he'll need to wait a bit longer to feel.

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/02/2010 14:41

Well I'm the expert in GTTs Nizzy, having had at least 5 of them so far . What do you want to know? For the test itself you need to fast for around 12 hours (but the appts are usually 9am, so it only really means a late breakfast), then you'll have a finger prick test (just to make sure that your blood sugar isn't ridiculous before they start) followed by them taking some blood, then giving you a vile glucose drink and some water to take, and then you have to sit still for 2 hours (so don't take N or I with you!) before having more blood taken.
They test based on a number of risk factors, including BMI, high weight previous babies and family history of diabetes.

Good luck later wheredidmyfeetgo.

OP posts:
fillybuster · 12/02/2010 15:05

hey all, just back from my scan...finally! fillyflump is doing well and got the thumbs up on all fronts, which is a huge relief, as like LaT I had started worrying about absolutely everything. It's a.....

...

...

nope, not going to say

Have decided not to tell anyone at all for now, except possibly my (terminally ill) grandma and my sister who is off in Zambia running a paediatric ward in the middle of nowhere, singlehandedly, for a load of incredibly ill small malnourished children....

It makes me realise how lucky we are here, even when we grumble about the NHS, when she describes how the kids who in the UK would be in an isolation ward are the ones lucky enough to be 6 to a bed She starts her ward rounds at 7am, generally finishes at 11pm, doesn't stop all day and told me that if she spends longer than 10 mins, even with the sort of critically ill children who would have an entire team on call just for them, then she doesn't get to see all the children on the paed unit. And its just her and some local nurses....

...be warned: once I have got some more details from her regarding the hospital charity number and what supplies they need (everything, apparently: i have been posting scissors and biros so far!) I will be setting up a justgiving site and hassling everyone I know (including all of you) to donate...

CSWS Will update now - delighted everything ok with your bump

Gizmo I'm both amused at your dust bunnies and bemused at the total calm with which you are dealing with all of this...

Wheredidmyfeetgo - thinking of you this afternoon, hope everything goes well

Nizzynoodles - I randomly had to have a couple of GTTs last time. Can't remember why, but it wasn't a big deal...just try to get an early morning appointment so you don't have to fast for too long! In fact one MW told me that too many GTTs can actually trigger the diabetes as it makes you go from low sugar to high in such a short space of time...

Nicky - welcome back

Marmiteaddict - welcome to the thread You can come and hang out with me any time, I love the stuff!! In fact, I've been known to eat an entire pot in one sitting, with a spoon or just my finger....

Monkeymargot - must admit, I don't have a clue what doula's cost, and wouldn't have had one if we'd been paying, but I do get the impression that its a lot less than a maternity nurse or nanny because it requires a different level of training and its for less hours a day. There's more information on www dot org dot uk, which is the main site to book through as well.
