Here we go ladies - I'll C&P the stats in a tick. Don't forget to add the gender on if you find out at your scan

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
wheredidmyfeetgo · 12/02/2010 16:09

I'm back! Thanks for all the lovely wishes.

All was well, had a very wriggly baby which was good to see. The lady spent some time looking at the spine as that was my main concern (both DS's have large dimples at the base of their spines which have turned out to be nothing)

Anyway I don't know for sure what we are having as I didn't want to find out, so you'll need to ask my DF as he does know! We'll see how long that lasts until he lets it slip. I'm pretty sure it's a boy, but I'll have to wait an see (as long as DF doesn't tell anyone who lets the cat out the bag to me)

Filly Glad everything went well with your scan too.

Monkeymargot The cost of a Doula can vary depending on where you are, but generally it's around £400- £500 for a birth Doula and that include a couple of postnatal visits too. Or you can just hire them as postnatal Doula's at around £25ph I believe.

Nizzynoodles Hope the tests go well. God I wouldn't be able to fat in the morning- I would pass out by 9am!

Marmiteaddict I'm going to come and hang out with you and filly too, if that's ok?

wheredidmyfeetgo · 12/02/2010 16:10

Nizzynoodles That was supposed to be "fast in the morning" not fat???

marmiteaddict · 12/02/2010 16:46

Filly and wheredidmyfeetgo it's good to have you on board I must confess Ive never eaten marmite out of the jar with a spoon, although since being pregnant I have had to buy a toaster for my office because I couldnt make it between breakfast and lunch without a bit of marmite on toast.

I think that I saw my bump move for the first time yesterday (without me doing anything). It was very exciting. Have felt movements for about 3 weeks now but this was the first sighting

fillybuster · 12/02/2010 17:25

Mmm...marmite. Especially when pregnant, for some reason - this is the 3rd time I have mainlined huge quantities of the stuff at this point!

I have a running joke with my dh as I absolutely loathe bananas (fruit of the devil, imo) and he hates marmite.

So I spent the first 2 years of my dcs lives being 'good mummy' and feeding them banana, mashing it etc etc when I can barely stand the smell of the stuff....and he spent all that time taking the piss out of me....like "mmm, mummy have some, yummy...".

Then...when ds1 was nearly 2 I introduced him to marmite on toast. Hahaha...dh has to cope with spreading marmite for the dcs at least 3 days a week Revenge is sweet

Of course these things can rebound on you. We were telling ds and dd how important it is to try foods, even if you think you don't like them. He said (all innocent) "like you with bananas mummy, and dadd with marmite?". I said "exactly" and he then (doh! of course!) said "maybe you've changed your minds too". So dh and I sat down, side by side, me with a banana and him with some marmite toast. Both with tears of laughter streaming down our faces....and on the count of three....

Well, I managed to swallow one bite of banana. Which was a heck of a lot more than dh achieved with his marmite toast .

Monkeymargot, I mistype but the link to the doula site is this one. According to the site, you can get a pre-birth doula from around £200 and then post-natal care is hourly from around £10 but goes up according to experience. Probably depends where you live, too.

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/02/2010 17:48

Can those of you with nannies etc help me with some idea on this thread please?
Can you also tell me what hours your nannies work? I saw an ad yesterday for a nanny in my area to work 7:30-7:30 5 days per weeks for £400 net, which seems so little to me to get paid for so many hours, but is that the norm? I know that the person advertising is not hard up, so I assume that she had researched what to offer.

OP posts:
MillyMollyMoo · 12/02/2010 17:53

I paid my nanny £300 for 5 x 8 hour days, net ooop north, £400 sounds a bit tight but i have come to realise you don't necessarily get what you pay for, interview carefully and they don't start without a CRB.

MrsDmamee · 12/02/2010 18:49

LOL at your marmite n bananas story filly

i dont like the stuff and as for bananas, use to like them, was the only thing i could manage somedays during the horrible MS days of this pg.
But show me a banana now and i run screaming!!

Im enjoying oranges now though which i never normally ever eat ever. Might have one now actually

glad to hear all scans when well, and welcome to those in the "not finding out club".
I dont want to know what baby is but i really want to know at the same time and have been half thinking in my head should i find out. But then i want the surprise too at the birth of its a.......argggghhhhhhh only 19 weeks to go its not that long to wait really.

csws fillybuster thanks for the info on GTT. I've got a 9am appointment so maybe it won't be too bad. I'll definitely do it on a day that the girls are in nursery though!!

MrsC09 · 12/02/2010 21:28

Very excited as just made my first big baby purchase Have taken the plunge and gone for the Miyo baby hammock so hoping that our LO will be one of the ones sleeping through the night at 6 weeks!

A tip if any of you are thinking of getting it as their website is completely sold out & won't be getting more stock until end May so get in there quickly as there are only 3 uk stockists who now have very limited stock!

Have a good weekend everyone.

Barbeasty · 13/02/2010 07:57

Marmiteaddict I'm in Bussage, so not far at all. I also couldn't agree more about the standard of care I've had so far. I think the reputation seems to be deserved- I had a bleed in December and within 3hrs I was at the EPU having an emergency scan. And even in January's snow, they swapped midwives around to make sure appointments could be kept. I'm hoping for the midwife-led unit too.

Greensnail my DH is convinced that the baby and I are ganging up on him- every time he comes near me to try and feel the kicking, all movement stops! And if he tries to prod her and encourage movement once more...

gizmo · 13/02/2010 09:14

Morning everyone - saw your query, cantsleep. I pay £320 net for 5 days a week 8.15-6.00 in Cambridge, where nanny rates are moderate, I would say.

A 60 hour week is a long week, although bear in mind that £400 net is a salary of c.£27,500, which nets up to costs to the employer of £30,200, paid out of post-tax income. Ouch. Well worth the money for the right person and there's no doubt that they will earn it, but realistically there are very few people who can afford that level of expenditure without breaking sweat. I know our nanny is our biggest monthly expenditure - bigger than our mortgage.

Filly hohohoho at your marmite story...watching someone cornered by toddler logic is always hilarious! I rather break the advertising meme for marmite, I'm afraid, since I can take it or leave it. I live in fear that packs of advertising executives will hunt me down and hypnotise me into a more definite position on the Marmite Question.

LittleRobbo · 13/02/2010 09:28

Phew filly i am so pleased everything is fine

I am struggling to keep up with the thread, apologies ladies,i skim read most things because of a lack of patience and end up missing vital information because of it

Welcome all the new ladies and congratulations on all the relieving scans

I bet we are nearing the end of the scans now madamefreckle i think we need some more stats from you

Anyone got any exciting plans for Valentines? Ours will be pretty low key,i got the M&S £20 deal for tonight, its very good and looks delicious. Then Sunday going out for a big family meal as we have 3 birthdays in one week (expensive!) I also have 2 empty vases in the kitchen waiting to be filled,a subtle visual reminder for DH

I am afraid i am where marmite is concerned,as i have never tried it! Maybe i will buy a small jar, will keep you posted on that one

mampam · 13/02/2010 12:07

I'm at boiling point this morning . The zip has broken on the last pair of normal trousers that I can fit into. So I thought that maybe it's time for me to buy some maternity ones. Can I find any......NO!

I have trudged every website, not just looking for trousers but skirts and dresses too and can I find anything....NO!

Anything I do like is too expensive. I have got very chunky legs and do not wear anything above the knee. Low and behold the only skirts or dresses you can get are above the knee.

I only wear wide leg trousers and have got long legs, can I find this combination....NO!(not in my size anyway).

Obviously the fashion designers of today make clothes to fit women with skinny legs. Bugger those of us with FAT chunky legs.

[anger] [anger] [anger]

mampam · 13/02/2010 12:09

Sorry that was meant to be:

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/02/2010 18:08

Thank you milly and gizmo. Cambridge is actually a good comparison for my area I think, and when you gross up the £400 to £27,500 it actually sounds very generous! Is there an internet calculator that can convert the net to gross like that? I've had a quick google but not found anything very helpful. With dh and I not having been employees for such a long time (I was self-employed before becoming a SAHM too) I am probably quite out of touch with PAYE stuff! I'd like to play with some figures until I come up with one which sounds about right for us both as an opening offer.

mampam - I forget what size you are - are you the slender size 8 person?

I can only dream of a baby that sleeps through at 6 weeks MrsC09. I'd be bloody happy if I could get one that would sleep through by 6 months! Congratulations on your purchase!

Our valentines will be spent hosting dd's birthday party. A whole morning of sandwich making - joy!

OP posts:
Woofie · 13/02/2010 20:24

barbeasty Bussage! Lovely! A teenage boyfriend of mine lived there.

Hurray for the positive scans filly and wheredidmyfeetgo

We had a bit of a nasty moment last night - sudden onset of pretty heavy abdominal cramps at about 5 o'clock that were still going strong by 9pm... We ended up going to the labour ward on NHS direct's advice - though baby was still flipping away, they were concerned about early onset of labour After several hours of waiting around and poking by a very nice obstetrician, turns out I have a urinary tract infection (phew), so feeling a bit grim and sore, but very relieved.

It's traditional to be ill at the beginning of a holiday from work I guess. Looking forward to a fun halfterm week w ds, including celebrating my bday (he's choosing my birthday treat, whcih at the moment looks like it will be the NAtional Railway Museum ) and then Paris next weekend, for dh + I to enjoy the last opportunity for any grown-up time before June. Whooo!

Bit of a me-me-me message - hope everyone's enjoying the weekend

mampam · 14/02/2010 11:56

Woofie I'm glad everything turned out to be ok (apart from the UTI), how frightening for you. Hopefully what has happened to you will teach us all to be vigilant.

CSWS hope this helps?

Size 8? I bloody wish!! Try adding a 10 to that and getting fatter!!! Finding that most maternity clothes stop at an 18 but I think I would be more comfortable in a 20 now. I cannot wait to get back to Weight Watchers.

Crisis averted for now as DH ransacked my wardrobe and found 3 stretchy dresses that will keep me going for now

LaTrucha · 14/02/2010 13:29

Mampam - I too hate buying maternity clothes. I had best luck on ebay TBH, but it is random of course.

Sorry for no more. I'm feeling as bad a sI did a few weeks ago with morning sickness ATM.

Really happy about my boy now!

RnB · 14/02/2010 14:36

Hello everyone, not been around much lately. This board is moving so fast now!

Gina words fails me . I'm so so sorry.
Cadmum nice to hear from you. Hope you're ok

Mampam how's the SPD? Mine has been very up and down. I stupidly kicked in a bottom drawer the other day as I was walking past (such an innocent thing to do) but immediately regretted it and felt like a large man had kicked me between the legs with all his might Good god - the pain! Pelvis now feels even more unstable around the front and back. Saw a private physio who was very honest with me - said its pretty much only going to get worse but he will give me acupuncture at 26 weeks (just over 1 week to wait). In his experience this can really help with the pain.

Will need to sort out some sort of mothers help type person too. I used to have au pairs when my boys were toddlers, and as useful as they are I'm so glad to have my house back now. So wold definitely not go for a live-in option again. I have a lady who helps me with the boys, but just for 6 hrs/wk (either babysitting or school collection etc), and they go to after school club 3 days a week. Will poss increase her hours or get someone to help around the house in addition to her. Both DP and I are self-employed so hopefully he can work it to be around alot in those first fews weeks while I'm recovering and getting bf established.

I start my hypnobirthing course at the end of the month - am very excited. Also strongly considering a home water birth. Apparently Brighton & Hove has a large proportion of home births compared to the rest of the counntry and it is actively encouraged.

Woofie how scary, so glad it was just a UTI. Similar thing happened to me on friday - had 5 strong contraction like pains while on the school run. Totally freaked me out and I went to hospital to be monitored. Had no UTI and no more contractions - is a mystery. Really hope this baby stays put!

goodname · 14/02/2010 16:31

Hi everyone,
that sounds terrifying woofie. I had really bad contraction like pains a good few weeks ago in middle of the night and really panicked but it turned out to be a strange bug going round (so the midwife said when I phoned anyway).
I really want to have my baby in the midwife led unit in Ninewells but the consultant is keen on me going to consultant unit for various reasons including past illnesses. Working on it though as I dont think any of the reasons make much sense. I would really like a water birth, although I have a seriously low pain threshold so maybe better off just opting for all the drugs straight away. What is the real difference between the consultant led unit and the midwife one, apart from availability of drugs and water births? Really starting to think about the actual labour now, esp after watching one born every minute. Am getting scared
No plans for valentines, think its a horrible commercial con to be honest. Why do we put up with being told exactly when we must be romantic. Feeling quite guilty just now as husand is pottering around clearing out cupboards and fixing things while i sit and drink coffee and play on the internet. It is Sunday afternoon though.
Congrats on purchasing the hammock Mrsc09
Was considering the amby one but got a little worried about the deaths in america. Decided to just get a moses basket and if I have problems to get a hammock then. Seems like quite a lot of money too. Would be really interested to see how you get on with it though.
Gizmo really glad there seems to be a good explanation for the bright bowel and hope you manage to keep being so positive. I find it easy to get worried by every little thing.
Wee baby is kicking like crazy at most regular intervals these days. DH has felt it very clearly, said it was like he was trying to push his hand of. Am slightly worried that baby will not be needing much sleep when he is born as he seems quite hyperactive.
Cant remember what everyone else has been saying but hope all are well.

goodname · 14/02/2010 16:33

Oh and filly, your sister sounds amazing, would be glad to donate. Its nice to know exactly where money donated is going. And yes we do have it very easy here but its easy to forget that and just get caught up in worrying about lots of trivial stuff all the time. Good to have a reminder.

monthlymayhem · 14/02/2010 16:57

Hello all. Had my scan on Friday, all good and........................it's a little brother for DS :-) Thought I might have felt a tinge of disappointment as I've always imagined having one of each, but when the sonographer told me I was delighted, and it was what I expected. And of course practically speaking we've got all the clothes/toys, etc, etc we're going to need.

I had a waterbirth with g&a last time at the community midwife unit of our local hospital and it was a very good experience, so I'm hoping to do the same again. Because DS's birth weight was on the lower side, I will need to have a growth scan at 28 & 34 weeks though before they sign me off for the cmu unit again.

Hope everyone is having a romantic Valentine's day!

MrsC09 · 14/02/2010 19:25

Woofie good to hear it was just a scare. I was diagnosed with UTI at my wk 24 GP appointment on Friday which really surprised me as haven't felt anything (and i know how awfully painful it can be!!) It seems that my lowered immune system has since lead to sore throat, cold, headache & itchy ears so being a miserable bugger at the moment.

Out of curiosity, what drugs did they give you for the UTI? I'm being ridiculously paranoid about taking pills whilst pregnant & don't particularly like/trust my gp... I was given 500 mg of Amoxicillan (sp?) to take 3 times a day for a whole week which seems like a lot to me? Does anyone know what's normal?
