Here we go ladies - I'll C&P the stats in a tick. Don't forget to add the gender on if you find out at your scan

meggy - if you are used to having your bikini waxed then it shouldn't really be a problem - perhaps just a little more sensitive, but if it's something that you're not used to, then prob not to be recommended.

Sleeping bags are optional, but as long as your baby doesn't need swadding to sleep (my dd did, my ds didn't) then they are a very good idea, as you don't have the worry of getting feet to foot spot on and covers covering them in the night.

mampam · 02/02/2010 13:59

meggy I'm glad you've raised the issue of sleeping bags. I've wanted to but have been a little because I'm on baby #3. I know nothing about them. My friend's DS uses them and he's 3 years old. I always think he looks a little odd in it. They are only thin so how do they keep warm in winter?

MrsD I've started keeping a tally of what and how much everything costs for DC's for school. ie clothes, shoes, book bags, after school clubs etc. May be a good reference for future use.

It's hard when lots of DC's friends belong to sports clubs, have music lessons, swimming lessons, riding lessons etc. I can only afford for DC's to do one thing each, actually I can't even afford that and luckily my parents kindly pay for it because exH won't help me out. When it's me saying No to them all the time I'm the one who looks like the big bad wolf.

DC's do have regular check ups with the school dentist but just lately I've been thinking they should go to the proper dentist and have mentioned it to DD who replied "yes daddy said we ought to be going to the dentist". I just thought to myself "well why doesn't he f*cking take them". I doubt he would want to pay for it though because he and wife go to the most expensive dental clinic in the area!!

This is turning out to be a slag the ex off day isn't it!!?

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/02/2010 14:24

justbeme - can you either CAT georgee or contact me on CantSleepWontSleep at gmail dot com so that we can sort out a meetup with you. We have a Wednesday date that georgee, greensnail and I can all make .

mampam - babies can't cool themselves down, so it's important that the sleeping bags aren't too warm. You can get them in 0.5, 1.0 or 2.5 tog, which seems to be warm enough, unless you have an exceptionally cold house?

OP posts:
playftseforme · 02/02/2010 14:32

I didn't want to admit it but I've never had a professional waxing, I've always DIY'd with the wax strips. Tummy expanding at an alarming rate, so if I'm going to have one last ditch attempt at the DIY method, it's going to have to be sooner rather than later
I don't even like swimming that much, what I do for my dd...

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/02/2010 14:35

That's no bad thing to admit playftse - it f*ing hurts!

OP posts:

Baby sleeping bags are fab as there's no chance of them kicking the covers off in the night, or wriggling down underneath them. They're also great when the baby is still having night feeds as they stay all snuggly and warm in the sleeping bag while you're feeding them and its easy to put the baby back down without having to disturb them and tuck them back in.
They come in different tog ratings so you have a warmer one for winter than in the summer. I suppose they don't seem as thick as blankets would but they really do keep them warm - I suppose partly because they are wrapped right up in it rather than just lying underneath.
DD liked to be swaddled for the first few weeks, and after that we moved her to a sleeping bag. If you're using them you don't need any other bedding except a bottom sheet for the mattress, so we've never used the blankets we bought for the cot or the beautiful quilt a friend made for us. We did find moses basket sheets helpful though, so would get these even if you're planning on using sleeping bags.

minimoonumbertwo · 02/02/2010 15:09

meggy i used to have mine waxed regularly but since getting it done with i was pg before have never gone back! it was so painful i had to stop her half way (attractive), started using hair removing cream and have never looked back.

however i have always been a total wuss with waxing so if you are used to the pain of a brazilian i'm sure you'll be fine! or you could just go for a tidy up which will be quicker...

sleeping bags - fantastic invention - although i didn't think you could use them until baby is 6 months? has anyone used one before then? i hope i am wrong as they are brilliant!

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/02/2010 15:14

You can use them from 7lbs (some are a bit heavier, but we use the offical 'grobag' ones from bumpto3), so def from birth unless you have a weeny baby (mine were 9lbs and 8lb4oz, so not an issue here!).

OP posts:
greensnail · 02/02/2010 15:22

Ah, that's a good point i'd forgotten about with sleeping bags. A lot of them say from birth, but the official grobag ones have an extra popper to make the armhole smaller and more secure when the baby is less than 10lb. I was a bit worried about using other ones we'd been given when DD was tiny as it seemed possible she could wriggle inside them (although thinking back, she probably couldn't!) but she was always perfectly secure in the grobag with the extra poppers done up!

minimoonumbertwo · 02/02/2010 15:23

Yay!!! Thank you

herewegrow · 02/02/2010 15:38

I love sleeping bags / grobags. DD is 13 months and they are great esp as she is such a wriggler in the night and often ends up the other way in the cot. She was in blankets from birth as she was tiny but once she was big enough and a bit more wriggly she went into sleeping bags. My SIL swore by them and now I do.

I've got my scan tomo. Feeling both excited and nervous. Will report back with news on Thurs.

mampam · 02/02/2010 15:57

Still not convinced about the sleeping bags. How can a baby be warm in winter in a 2.5 tog when adults sleep with a 10.5 tog quilt or more?

greensnail · 02/02/2010 16:03

Good luck for tomorrow herewegrow

Just in case we're not all fed up with talking about sleeping bags, I'll just say 2 more things on the subject!

Was just looking at the Bumpto3 website and see that they now say they are suitable from 8lb8oz, not 7lb as they used to say. I suspect this is to do with the new safety standards for sleeping bags which have come in. I think DD was probably a bit smaller than that when she went into one and it was fine (she was 7lb9oz at birth) but its worth bearing in mind I suppose.

Secondly, just found this on ebay. Brand new genuine 1tog 0-6 month grobags for 8.99, seems like a good deal to me. Hope someone else finds it useful!

greensnail · 02/02/2010 16:04

mampam I'm not sure, but DD sleeps through in hers so she must be warm enough!

fillybuster · 02/02/2010 16:04

Apologies in advance...this is going to be a lousy catch up...even though I've read everything I have retained very little

DD's 2nd birthday & party on Sunday was fine in the end. Wasn't very fine on Friday afternoon when after the week from hell at work, and having done nothing at all to prepare (but promised myself that i could get all baking, shopping and presents sorted on Saturday while dh looked after the dcs) dh was suddenly told he would have to work all weekend.

Cue filly in full hormonal meltdown...

In the end, dh managed duck out of actual office time and worked from home through the weekend, which meant he could mostly help with childcare whilst i got stuff done. But it was touch and go for a while!!

Teddy bear chocolate cake turned out well - 3 hours of icing on saturday night buggered my sciatica though - will post pictures soon Didn't go too mad apart from that, just made scones, chocolate biscuits and chocolate crunchies with the dcs (all v dc friendly baking, so it kept them occupied too!) and did lots of sandwiches and veg. Party was very good fun...in the end...

CSWS - maybe too late for this year, but we've finally come to the conclusion that party bags involve too much plastic tat which can't be environmentally friendly, so dh has decided we should give books as 'going home' presents, along with cake/raisins/mini chocolate whatever. Best thing about end-January parties is that kids annuals get marked down in the cheap bookstores, so you can pick up thomas/in the night garden/fireman sam type annuals for about £1/each. I got some great little hard page books for the 2 yr olds for 99p each this time, and annuals for the older kids.

Sleeping bags - wonderful things. I swaddled both my dcs until about 8 weeks, then half swaddled a bit longer, but they were both in them by 3 months. Our house is freezing (esp the nursery) but we've only ever had to add a cellular blanket over the top on very very cold nights. I think because the bag is all over, instead of just on top, the body heat gets trapped inside and they stay warmed, iyswim.

Playftse - i like the tankini but I want a proper swimming costume. My previous mat one has collapsed...and mothercare stuff doesn't fit my norks. Did you find any good one pieces on your travels?

Sorry for such a self-centred catch up, hope you're all doing well and will do a proper one soon

MillyMollyMoo · 02/02/2010 18:04

GibberingGinger · 02/02/2010 19:56

Had my scan today so have just updated the list. It's two boys. So looks like I'll have to chuck most of DD's clothes and start again. I'm beginning to think there is very little I can reuse from last time round! I'm still sad that I'm not getting to use my pram again, but really don't think I can squish two into a single carrycot!

Rest of the appointment was fine apart (squeamish alert) from they couldn't get a vein in my arms so had to take blood from the back of my hand. Ugh. And they stuck the needle right through the vein so it bled into my hand and now I have a huge bruised bulge on the back of my hand. double ugh.

Hope everyone is well. Am feeling a lot more relaxed now I know everything is fine with the babies. Hurray for 20 week scans

greensnail · 02/02/2010 20:01

Hooray, great news gibberingginger You might be able to use your pram for a little while. My SIL's twins used to like to be close to each other when they were newborn and used to sleep together in one moses basket. Doubt you'd get to use it for very long though.

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/02/2010 20:01

Ooh lots of boys - very exciting!

filly - we did consider getting books, but wasn't as inspired as usual by selection on bookpeople. Will have to keep an eye out during the year for suitable ones for next year!

chestnut100 · 02/02/2010 20:16

Gibberingginger - so glad to hear you scan went well. It's such a great feeling isn't it!?

Can you all forgive and indulge me if I have a rant?! As you may have read, i had a slight panic after not feeling the baby move for three days (only felt it for first time in the two days proceeding that). Well, i thought what the hell, i pay my taxes I am off to the docs for a bit of reassurance (couldnt get in with midwife). So have just been. The doctor was not particularly reassuring and told me the baby was very small and would be very difficult for her to find to listen to the heartbeat (excuse me, I am 21 wks! another doc picked the heartbeat up immediately when I was 16 weeks!. So after a lot of faffing around and me feeling very guilty for wasting her time, she did find the heartbeat, which has obviously reassured me. I thanked her etc, but her parting shot as I left the room? Obviously, just becuase we heard the heartbeat today doesn't mean something won't go wrong tomorrow...."

As if I don't know that! But statistically, it's hardly likely, and bloody hell she couldn surely tell I needed a bit of reassurance, not something else to worry about!?

So feel a bit pissed off with her personally, i am just 100% happy that baby has obviously just snuggled back into her pre scan position where I couldn't feel her.

There endeth the rant! Hope the rest of you are having a nice evening!
