FifiForgot - hello, not sure if this is your first baby, just went back a few pages to see the list but couldnt see it.

But if you are planning a vaginal birth and want to avoid interventions then you should stay at home as long as possible. I would wait until contractions are every 4mins, lasting roughly the same time and coming regular all the time maybe at least an hour ir so and if you are coping, stay longer at home until you can possibly not stay anymore.

You probably know all this but fist babies are usuallu around 12 hours so the longer you are at home the better, you wont get poked around with, monitored and you'll be more comfortable.

As soon as you are there things can quickly be taken out of your hands and as soon as you get on that bed so many people never leave it until the baby is born and thats the last place you want to be as it will slow it down.

Anyway I maybe talking out of my butt because this is your third or you've a planned c-sec or you've been told you will go early etc but just thought i'd tell you in case because so many mums i know said after their first birth, that they wished they had stayed at home longer.

Mama2b5 - hormones alright, I am SO moody and short tempered right now. Feel terrible for my dd's i should be giving them lots of love before my time will be taken up for awhile with baby but i get so irritated with them at the moment. every night i tell myself that i need to make a special effort with them.

i remember being really moody at the end of my last pregnancy.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand breathe!

devotion · 06/01/2010 10:27

FifiForgot - oooops that would only be if you are least 37 weeks, before that you would want to go earlier as the baby would be premature.

Sixmincepiessoontobeseven · 06/01/2010 10:41

Hi all

Just checking in, no baby news to report here and am becoming increasingly fed up. But I'm in Manchester too and so the snow is horrendous. In some ways 'm willing baby to hold on but in others I really am ready to be unpregnant IYKWIM.

Kids off school today (should have been first day back) so no peace and quiet for me, although the two youngest have only just got up (lazy monkeys)

cant I've been following stella as well no news this morning.

Hope anyone who is labouring is ok and anyone still waiting for something to happen is not too fed up

38+4

FifiForgot · 06/01/2010 10:56

devotion this is my second baby and I'm having a planned section (not allowed to go for VBAC due to horrific complications with DD), so really don't want to be in an "emergency" situation. Things have settled down this morning, but I still feel "odd". Have an appointment with my midwife this lunchtime so I'll see what she says. Fortunately DH is at home today, there is no way he could have made it into work, we have had 5inches of snow and its still coming down! Part of me wants this baby out and then another part of me wants the baby to stay put until 25 January as planned, especially as my lovely Consultant is going to deliver this one and I can't be sure that he will be in the unit/on call.

DD was 2 weeks late and I was in hospital waiting to be induced when I went into labour so was actually in the unit from the word go, it all feels faintly sureal this time round!

Hope everyone else is OK and enjoying the snow!

CantThinkofFunnyName · 06/01/2010 11:09

NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH NEWFLASHFraochsmum had a baby girl yesterday (5 Jan) at 07:48, 6lb 2oz (same as my Olivia ). No name chosen as yet.

She had a natural delivery which went well but then had problems with placenta so had to transfer to Glasgow anyway! She hopes to be home later today.

Woohoo - well done Fraochsmum!!

Brasso4 · 06/01/2010 12:29

Well done Fraochsmum! That is really good news...shame you had to go to Glasgow but I am sure it was for the best.

Looking forward to hearing more xxx

quirkychick · 06/01/2010 12:35

Fraochsmum congratulations! I hope the transfer wasn't too bed, especially in the snow.

FifiForgot I have planned section on 12th and I too am hoping not to have an emergency situation! At the moment the snow is not too bad. My parents are coming from abroad on Mon night but if the weather is bad it could all go horribly wrong. We have to be at the hospital at 7am, so finding someone to take dd in the early hours will be fun. Dp is on the case as I type.

crumpette I hope you sort out your feelings and your dp sorts out his too.

CurlyCasper · 06/01/2010 12:49

Fraochsmum delighted with your news, and glad someone spilled on here before I did after finding you yesterday!
You had a girl, on my birthday, who is the same weight I was when I was born! I see from another thread that yours is a July birthday - well, that's when I am due, so perhaps you can share the date to give me a heads up?

well pleased for you mate! Sorry you had to go up the road though. Hope all three of you are happy and well and home soon xxx

Sorry for the intrusion everyone else - I just love hearing about births though! Off to check on stellamel and the mountain rescue team...

somewhathorrified · 06/01/2010 13:20

Great news frao congratulations.

Fifi any more news? fingers crossed for you.

For those hoping for a HB, when I spoke to the supervising MW she told me that when the snow hit feb '09 she cancelled all HB MW's for 2 days. I should say that they snow where I live (Northants/N.Beds) is never all that bad...just thought peeps should be aware that HB option may not be available if the snows are bad where you are.

flyingma · 06/01/2010 14:34

Yay for Fraochsmum... thanks CTOFN for the news and also the exciting link to Stellamel's thread.

We had a bit of excitement this morning as well. Baby decided that this morning it was going to play sleeping policeman. Bearing in mind that this child does not stop moving and normally even if I turn over in the middle of the night, I can feel movement as it re-settles on the new side.

So got up this morning thinking that things had been a bit still. With the carpal tunnel I could not really feel a pulse when usually bubs has a strong heartbeat.

A bottle of OJ, can of coke, cup of sweet tea, chocolate , 2 slices of peanut butter and jam on toast and 1 phone call to the hospital labour ward later, still no sign of life. The pacnicked dad was outside clearing a path through the snow and deicing the car. Mum was prodding away at baby and finding yet more sugar-laden products to consume. Then like 2 hours later the kicks are back. I promise I won't ever moan to DH again about how much the kicks and punches are hurting me.

I bet this morning's events have probably brought on some kind of gestational diabetes. [hmmm] Off to down a big bottle of water to try to flush all that sugar back out!

mistletoekisses · 06/01/2010 14:53

Hi everyone!!

Fraoch - congrats (although have texted that back to you!). Cannot wait to hear the birth story.

I cannot believe this snow! Although I am in a part of surrey that didnt get it too bad. Roads still fine and central London has escaped it too, so made it to my last antenatal appt. Sooo exciting! Had my bloods done, signed the consent form, got my all day parking permit, got the meds they need me to take. Makes it all seem so much more real! Although they are currently predicting heavy snow for Sunday night. If the forecast sticks, plan to stay in a hotel near the hospital on Sunday night. Dont want to risk not being able to get there.

Hope everyone else is ok.

sazlocks · 06/01/2010 14:57

well done Fraochsmum - lovely news and hope all well even thogh you ended up transferring
flyingma glad baby is dancing once again

All good here - got 8 inches of snow and its just starting to come down again. DH dug the car out and is off foraging to Sainsbos for supplies !

Biccy · 06/01/2010 15:01

Just in case you haven't been there and got it, there's news about Stellamel on her thread...

Congrats to you Froach, sorry about your transfer, but hope you are enjoying snuggling now.

Thanks somewhat for the info re homebirth MWs being cancelled in Feb. I did wonder whether that would be the case. Although here the homebirth midwives are the community midwives, and they don't attend hospital births at all, and they all live very locally, so maybe I'd still be ok.

Had my blood test this morning, so should get hb results tomorrow, and hopefully they'll be over 10 and then at least I know, snow permitting, I should be an ok case for a home birth. Somehow I can't see me getting a pool - no doubt even if the hb results are good tomorrow, I'll put off the pool business due to the snow... still, maybe I'll buy one in a box; they seem to sell on for pretty good prices if they are unused.

FifiForgot · 06/01/2010 15:11

Well back from the midwife, baby is back to back, head down and nowhere near engaged. She did say that if I had been planning a VBAC she wouldn't like my chances. DD was exactly the same and didn't engage properly until her cord prolapsed!

The pains I had yesterday seem to have eased off, but I'm still feeling them. However, the roads out of where we live are a bit impassable and the hospital were short of midwives this morning, so all in all I'm hoping that baby stays put at least until the snow has cleared.

quirkychick we haven't got to be at the hospital until 7.30am and Granny is very close by, but its still a bit of a performance!

Congratulations to Fraochsmum on your new arrival.

Having walked to my appointment and back and I am now shattered and feeling very uncomfortable so I'm off to lie on the sofa and let DH wait on me!

sparklycheerymummy · 06/01/2010 15:22

Hi everyone just jumping over from due dec babies thread!! Looking at some lovely baby pics......my ds was born 2 weeks late on 12th dec weighing 10lbs 11oz...... anyone else had or expecting a big baby..... he is fab but got a cold so stuck to mummy most of time. Have fun guys and enjoy all the new mummy attention as it soon wears off!!!!

somewhathorrified · 06/01/2010 15:33

biccy the HB MW's here are also Community MW's...what I was told was that they were cancelled because once they respond to a HB call they take full responsibility for the birth and they couldn't guarentee that they could get to the mum with the weather. Personally I think it was a huge of reaction as the days she was talking about we only had about 3in of snow in the village! I too hoped to grab a cheap birth pool, bit of a laughable concept it seems. I'll just utilize the bath I think.

chickbean · 06/01/2010 15:36

Congratulations to Fraochsmum and to everyone else so far.

I'm hoping that DH will be home in time to pick the DSs up from nursery (car out of action, don't know whether to risk pushchair on road or try backpack and sledge) - DS1 came early after a day of excessive exercise - don't want to be too early. I'm envisaging DH pulling me to the hospital on the sledge.

Good luck to everyone - hope that snow doesn't make things too difficult.

Siochfradha · 06/01/2010 17:18

Hello - back from christmas hols in Ireland. Survived the 600 mile drive, though getting to Stranraer was a bit 'napolean's retreat from moscow'. Ferry turned out to be lot more reliable than another mode of transport though so all ended well. Just figured out how to update list. Due at end of month. Lovely to be on mat leave in the snow...

Latest indignity - on bus having to mop up a sudden nosebleed with the only item with powers of absorbency in handbag - ancient pantyliner. Well, there was equally ancient tampon which would have been IDEAL really, but it may have attracted more attention...

ooh, lol at the idea of stopping a nose bleed with a tampon, on a bus!

crumpette · 06/01/2010 18:17

hellooo! fraochsmum HUGE congratulations, hope you are nearly home by now

so I am

40wks today

and have

no baby!

saw midwife who wants me to be induced at hospital, I'm trying to avoid it.. going Friday... she also advised sex... I said NO CHANCE ! DP still not in good books no way am I doing that!

devotion · 06/01/2010 18:19

Fififorgot - ah now i see you in the list. excuse the long winded message then

i totally understand your worries then.

Fraochsmum - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you officially the first January baby?
That is one of my worst fears to have a retained placenta. So unfair to give birth naturally and then have to have an epidural or whatever they need to do. Hope it was not too stressful and you are home soon all snuggled up in the warmth with your little girl.

Siochfradha - can just imagine it well hopefully it was an absorbent one . I use to get nosebleeds with my 1st pregnancy too. I bet you are happy to be home now and settle yourself for your little ones arrival.

I was thinking about what would happen if the baby wanted to come on a snowy night. I think I would go ahead with my birth anyway and call an ambulance because how would we get there if we could not drive the car and how would they ambulance get to us? They would probably arrive as baby was coming or just after. There are three doctors in my building and a midwife who is in her 70's now so I would send dh for one of them if an emergency.

Hopefully it will be stress free, need to prepare a hospital bag anyway because it might not go how i want so i need to prepare myself for that. If i do have to go in then it will be as the baby is coming out i dont want the hospital to send me into a panic like they did last time. Some midwives dont think about what they say to you, stupid really. They should be trained to only say positive things to a labouring women unless in emergencies.

devotion · 06/01/2010 18:21

crumpette - who needs men

masturbation is also known to get contractions going!!! throw in some nipple stimulation, very hot curry and a power walk... actually snow might make that one tricky.
